effect for the entire region for the threat of new flooding as these new storms move-in. a weekend storm ranks a level 2. kumasi: as you wake up this morning, here is what you need to know about the storm the devastated so much of our area. reggie: thousands of bay area residents are still without power but there is a big improvement in the numbers. some school districts and sonoma county are still closed. a complete list is available right now on abc7news.com. some of the most severe damage came along the santa cruz county coastline. piers suffered significant damage. a california highway patrol officer was hurt when a tree fell on him in the south bay. . he is expected to be ok. the north bay is bracing for flooding across the russian river. people are busy filling sandbags -- sandbags.

lena howland is lena: we actually just got to guernsey villa few minutes ago. speaking of the sandbags, we have seen quite a few lining businesses along main street, where we just checked the pg&e website and power has been restored to most of these businesses. a lot of the homeowners outside of the main street area are still without power as they have been since late wednesday night. the biggest piece of information folks here need to know is this river is not expected to reach flood stage at 32 feet until sunday. an evacuation morning is still in effect for this area. neighbors are encouraged to get out now while they still can while the rain continues to come down. people were busy yesterday preparing and bracing for the worst, piling up sandbags in

front of businesses. some folks already deciding to evacuate as many have been without power since wednesday night. a landscape supply store said it has been filling sandbags by the hundreds. that is where we met outlaw barber owner, grabbing as many sandbags as a could, ready to protect his business from the rising russian river. >> drugstores will close. basic necessities will close down. the fire department will be busy doing rescues. you are kind of on your own. lena: sonoma county officials leaving the evacuation morning in place for folks living along the russian river over fear of flood history repeating itself. just shy of four years ago, most of the area was underwater the last time the russian river flooded.

it was so serious, there was no way in or out of the city except by watercraft. because the river is not expected to reach flood stage until sunday, we have learned moderate flooding will not begin until late monday into tuesday. that is something everyone will need to keep an eye on. that is something sonoma county officials are watching closely. kumasi: this morning, several beaches along the coast are closed after some of the worst flooding wethe damage is everywhere from businesses to hotels and focus is on cleanup n more rain is on the way. amanda: it is not unusual to crowds in capitola coming to capture the area's beauty.

thursday evening, any photo taken showed a powerful story. a complex of colorful houses took a blow. >> there are eight-foot logs that went through the doors of these houses and tour the houses apart inside. there is a lot of damage. they may lose five or six of those. unless they rebuild. amanda: a longtime resident was in the crowd of curious onlookers. many noting the worst came with high tide 8:30 thursday morning. >> what we saw was water coming out of the banks of socal creek and inundating homes and businesses. amanda: by thursday night, businesses on the ocean side of the village showed significant damage. drone video showing what is left of the once expensive outdoor patio. in the distance, the capital the peer split by high surf.

>> yesterday evening, we got the actual evacuation notice. that is when employees locked up and left. amanda: good news, the hotel has been green tagged. bad news, without power and utilities, there is still a long way until guests can return and visits can resume. >> the restaurants across from us were not as fortunate. a lot of those are red tagged or yellow tagged. it will be a lot of work and time for those businesses to come back. amanda: capitola was not the only area devastated. damage shut down part of the santa cruz were. the world famous cement ship that has been sunk into the sea ground for decades, the majority of the pier that once led up to it, gone. >> the big waves, the king tide, the wind, the rain, everything,

it was just a perfect storm. reggie: happening now. some people are still waking up in the dark this morning. things are improving fast in the bay area. you are seeing pg&e's map of current outages. there are 18,000 customers with no power. at the storm's peak, there were more than 100,000 customers without power. pg&e had 3000 technicians in the field yesterday. kumasi: we are learning more about the two-year-old boy killed after a tree fell on his home. the toddler has been identified by his family. authorities say a redwood tree fell on a double wide mobile home wednesday morning as a storm pummeled occidental and the rest of the state. according to a gofundme sinner by the family, he loved to dance, glove music. he was kind, gentle and had a loving spirit.

kumasi: welcome back, everyone. the most contentious fight to become house speaker in 164 years is entering its fourth day. there have been 11 failed votes so far and a 12 is set when the house reconvenes at 9:00 a.m. jobina: sources tell abc news kevin mccarthy is getting closer to a deal to gain support of at least 12 more republicans but that is not enough for him to win. he still has six holdouts and he can only afford to lose f votes.

kevin mccarthy has been working to make deals, even agreeing to change house rose to allow a single member to force a vote to remove the speaker. it has not been enough. despite the struggle to gain any new votes, kevin mccarthy said this stand up for go on as long as it takes for him to win. >> i think we have some progress going on. it is not how you start, it is how you finish. jobina: this is really impacting the ability for the house to do work. without a speaker, no new members can be sworn in, no legislation can be passed and some members say their security clearances have lapsed. to show you how unprecedented this is, the last time a speaker race went beyond five ballots was 1859. reggie: storms are having an impact in more ways than one. the torrential downpour's and winds were hitting local

restaurants and businesses hard. gloria rodríguez is life with the impact. gloria: good morning. we are live at the pier in pacifica. the national weather service extended a high surf morning until 9:00 this morning. the waves are pretty intense today. we have seen waves crashing over the pier, even going onto a sidewalk. they put out flonbeus the waterl getting onto the road. as far as businesses in the bay area, they are feeling the financial impact after days of heavy rain and back to back powerful storms. it has kept some diners away. lori joined many other businesses in closing down her restaurant early. she said she wanted to keep her staff and her customers safe. people cap canceling

chances with the potential of the russian river flooding. this tour has sandbags lined up to protect this business in front of their front door to keep water out in the event of flooding across river road. sonoma county issued an evacuation warning for people living near the russian river late wednesday night as the river continues to rise. because so many people across the area lost power on wednesday night, just two days ago, combined with the looming threat of flooding, some residents have already evacuated. others were busy stacking up with sandbags in case history does repeat itself. a landscape supply company told us it had been feeling sandbags by the hundreds over the past few days. that is where we met outlaw barber and beauty owner berlin fisher stocking up after learning the hard way in 2019.

officer is recovering after a tree at least 40 feet tall fell on him in san jose. this happened yesterday morning as an officer was responding to a minor crash on highway 17 near interstate 280. >> we understand we are stepping into a potentially dangerous situation. our officers are highly trained, very safe and take precautions. but occasionally things happen. kumasi: we are told the officer had some injuries but they are not life-threatening. crews were able to clear the tree from the road a short time later. reggie: work to clean up from the storm in san francisco could take weeks. crews have been working around-the-clock the clock to clear hundreds of trees that came down wednesday. one ended up trapping a family in the car. crews are taking down trees that are unstable because of saturated soil. >> there are trees behind you

that are now undermined with soil saturation and actively filing. we are just taking advantage of the lines being deenergized to make this area safe as possible. reggie: public works said you will likely see branches on the sidewalk for the next few weeks. kumasi: a storm is brewing after san francisco officials said the national weather service did not adequately warn them about the significance of the new year's eve storm. this is what the mayor said on tuesday. >> we were under the impression and notified by our national weather service that we could anticipate not even one inch of rain. in fact, what we saw over a 24 hour period was 5.5 inches of rain. although the information we had was not sufficient to help us prepare in the capacity we needed to address the issue. kumasi: the national weather service responded, saying officials were warned days ahead of time.

we spoke with our partners about trying to get answers on abc 7. >> we took the mayor and city official's claims to the national weather service and they share they communicated the situation 10 days before it happened. they told the public a significant rain event that would bring high-impacts and hazardous conditions was coming. in the week leading up to the storm, they also emailed officials daily briefings and presented at the planning meeting on december 28. that was three days before came. the intel was there, what they showed us. reggie: in the east bay, there are concerns about mudslides and evacuations. we spoke with one man who lives in the neighborhood. he said he is already dealing with road closures because of the rain and mud. >> i have never seen the hill do this type of damage. they are usually very prepared

and say we are not going to let this be. the mirror of who we are in san francisco. kumasi: the community district said it is planning to hold a town meeting to talk about community safety. reggie: new developments in walgreens' claimed that rampant shoplifting letter to the closing of five san francisco stores. unbelievable video of a thief grabbing things on a bike and rolling out of the store. cnbc reports walgreens chief financial officer said on an earnings call the shoplifting claim might have been a little exaggerated and they might have "cried too much." 3.5%. now it is around 2%. in accounts for merchandise that is usually stolen and also damaged, lost merchandise and merchandise taken by employees.

we reached out to walgreens for comment and have not heard back. kumasi: today marks the second anniversary of the january 6 capitol insurrection. there is a new lawsuit stemming from the death of an officer who defended the capitol. jobina is at the live desk with the latest. jobina: officer brian sicknick died from injuries he suffered during the capitol . his long-time partner has filed a wrongful death suit against former president trump and two others in the crowd. officer stroke. the lawsuit states -- million that says officer brian sicknick's death was a consequence of the defendants' unlawful actions. a response that president trump clearly and unequivocally said american should pick peacefully

kumasi: the nfl has canceled the bills-bengals game that was postponed monday night after buffalo bills player damar hamlin suffered cardiac arrest on the field. this morning there are some promising signs about hanlon's recovery. he is considered to be critically ill but he has shown improvements. he is on a ventilator but is able to write messages and hold hands with family members. doctors say their goal is to get him breathing on his own before discharging him from the hospital. reggie: companies are poised to slash hundreds of jobs. cisco systems is set to cut 165 employees. san francisco-based stitch fix is cutting about 340 jobs, 20% of its salaried workforce. the cuts come after salesforce announced it is slashing at hundred jobs.

peloton has agreed to pay a $19 million fine for failing to properly report hazards. the fine is one of the biggest in history. it is because the cpsc said peloton was selling products with a lethal defect. peloton recalled 25,000 treadmills following the death of a six euro child. now we take a live look at the new york stock exchange as trading gets underway. we are up about 113 points. the stocks reacting to the new jobs report. . the u.s. economy added more than 200,000 new jobs. we kumasi: delta airlines will begin to offer free wi-fi on its light starting next month. about 80% of its domestic fleet will be equipped by february 1.
