>> building a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions. this is abc 7 news. liz: now at 6:00, thunderstorms overnight. the next system making its presence known across the bay area. a live look outside right now at the golden gate bridge. more rain on the way. good morning, everybody. it is sunday, january 8 it i am liz kreutz along with lisa argen. it is dry right now, but we had a busy night last night. lisa: yeah, and we had thunderstorms in the that have since lifted off in the valley. you can see the lightning strikes, at least a dozen. look at highway 80 out toward vacaville. you can see that spread right there, and as you take it further to the south and west, it is raining in napa, and you notice down to the street level,

121, old sonoma road and further to the saud -- south, east into the valley, some pretty good rain. but as we go further to the north, you can see some spotty showers. here's a look at the next couple of hours, with the heavier rain, the wind gusts, and then by about 7:00, it is pretty much out of here. the winds dial back. we still have the wind advisory into 1:00, though, with gus to 50 miles an hour god -- gusts up to 50 miles an hour. we are getting into a level 3 storm late tonight, once again, the overnight hours, a very early monday with moderate to heavy rain, the possible flood threat as they are with possible mudslides and wind damage. there's a look at the next couple of hours, 9:00, light rain end through the afternoon, upper 50's to near 60 with a mostly cloudy day, and then that level 3 system coming in tonight.

we are going to talk about rain totals and the timing of this system, the multiple systems behind it, in a few minutes. liz? liz: thank you, lisa. in san francisco, crews are still cleani lastashi storm coms in.k ago, a storm swamped parts of the c streets and ings areust g gse. abc 7 news reporter tara campbell spoke to restaurant owners in the city yesterday to see how they are preparing. tara: juan gallardo is readying his restaurant for another round of heavy rains. recent storms hit san francisco's mission district hard. juan: at least four inches of water on the sidewalk. and we do not have the sandbags. our customers opened the door, and all the water comes in. tara: sand bags lining the surrounding blocks, public works barricading businesses and homes in hopes of holding off the runoff. downtown, the emergency operations center is fully

activated, crews working around the clock to clean up from recent storms while preparing for the next. >> our sewer system has been able to successfully drain most of the in city flooding we have seen, and our tree crews have been doing an amazing job. tara: officials urging people to be prepared, warning power outages are likely. >> we are asking people to stay home if they can, just to ride out the storm the best way possible. tara: as for juan, he has done the prep work and is hopeful of these sandbags are enough. juan: dpw, they called me and we were able to pick up a couple bags of sand. i think that is plenty for now. tara: tara campbell, abc 7 news. francisco public works is opening its operations yard at 8:00 this morning. it will stay open until 2:00.

strong winds and heavy rain caused some sparks to fly in concord last night. trees were seen blowing into high-voltage wires, leaving many pg&e customers in the dark. this happened on concord boulevard. police quickly closed off concord boulevard. more than half a half a million people across california are without power right now. more than 20,000 of those outages are in the bay area, according to pg&e's outage map. the utilities online map shows many other trouble spots, and the green and orange spots are indicating where there are outages in the north bay. as of 4:00 this morning, more than 13,000 customers are in the dark. on the peninsula, more than 9000 without power. wind is picking up in many communities, too. in the north bay, specifically guerneville, we have been getting calls from viewers about flooding there this morning. one man called and said, when he looked out his window, he could see water covering more than

half of his neighbor's home. we will have more on that in our next half hour. in the meantime, the santa rosa fire department says several trees and power lines are down around the city. they tweeted a video of a tree that fell on a car while it was being repaired. one person was injured and taken to the hospital. no word on their condition. sonoma county fire fighters saw this fallen tree on river road, just west of susser road. crews quickly cleaned up the scene using chainsaws and cleaned up the debris. it is a similar scene outside sacramento as well in elk world, where people are getting ready for more rain. down trees and outages there. some are even looking to disaster workers. the red cross in elk grove says it is offering much-needed relief. it is not just people needing a place to stay but anyone needing a break.

they say some people coming in are still processing the last storm as they wait for the next one. >> one client just came in and was expressing, since she has lived here, she has never seen anything to this extent. she was feeling very frustrated about that, and she is not sure where to even start for her recovery. >> i think that, you know, weo o eihomes, sthere' ofto depression, anxiety, we have the outreach they need. liz: sad to hear that. volunteers are encouraging them to grab a meal and check out their disaster relief resources. new details on the threat of a landslide in richmond. 15 homes were evacuated last week. this was after a crack was discovered tuesday on a hillside in the sea cliff neighborhood. the city manager says that evacuation order will remain in effect until further notice. there is no need to evacuate additional homes. richmond is providing accommodations through at least tomorrow for those who have evacuated. you can always track the rain

liz: welcome back. here is a live look from our exploratorium camera, looking over the san francisco timeline. news, virginia, where elementary school teacher was shot by a six-year-old boy. if the teacher is in stable condition to the six-year-old boy allegedly opened fire during an altercation friday with the teacher. authorities say the shooting was not accidental. thankfully, no students were injured. the unusual attack has people wondering how a child this young could do this to a teacher. >> it is shocking that a six-year-old child would be

sophisticated enough, number one, to know how to possess a gun, conceal it, carry it to school, and then, with discipline, fire one round at his teacher after an altercation. liz: very disturbing and sad. the police chief in newport news met with the teacher and her family on saturday. he urged the community to keep the teacher in its prayers and thoughts. happening today, president biden will make his first visit to the u.s.-mexico border since becoming president. his trip comes after announcing a plan to fix the migration crisis at the border. alexis christoforous reports. alexis: president biden will travel to el paso, texas today amid growing pressure from congressional republicans on how to handle the growing immigration crisis at the southern border.

ahead of today's trip, president biden announced a new plan aimed to slow the arrival of the 200,000 migrants at the border each month. pres. biden: i know it is a complicated issue. i don't want to say there is anything easy about it. alexis: biden saying this to people who attempt to cross the border illegally, seeking asylum from cuba, haiti, nicaragua, and venezuela. pres. biden: do not, do not just show up at the border. stay where you are and apply legally from there. alexis: the president also announcing up to 30,000 people from those countries will be allowed to apply for asylum each month. they would have to meet strict criteria, including naming a sponsor in the u.s. president biden also calling on republicans to provide more funding to tackle the crisis. pres. biden: now they have a choice. they can keep using immigration to score political points or try to solve the problem. alexis: the aclu responding saying this plan further ties his immigration policies to the trump era. the republican governor of texas calling the plan nothing more than a band-aid. alexis christoforous, abc 7 news , new york. liz: after visiting texas, president biden will travel to mexico city to meet with

mexico's president and canadian prime minister justin trudeau for the north american leaders summit. the state of colorado said it will stop busing migrants to chicago and new york. today, the last bus will arrive in new york. colorado's governor made the decision after having a productive conversation with the mayors of chicago and new york. those two mayors urged colorado to stop busting asylum city seekers to their city because they are overcapacity. they said they would work to pressure for a national solution. nearly 36,000 asylum seekers entered new york's emergency intake system. chicago has received more than 3800 people from texas and other states, including colorado. coming up on "this week," the homeland security secretary sits down for a one-on-one interview with abc 7 news anchor george stephanopoulos to talk with immigration crisis. it is the president's first visit since taking office. you can watch the full interview

at 8:00 this morning, right here on abc7. all right, after california congressman kevin mccarthy's historic win on capitol hill, becoming the speaker, other lawmakers are weighing in. at least one lawmaker thinks the contentious voting process is a sign of what is ahead for congress. democratic california congressman spoke with abc 7 news shortly after kevin mccarthy won the speakership after the 15th vote. >> if the rest of the acts are anything like the first act, it is not going to be very pleasant. but, hopefully, now that we have passed this, things will get better. having said that, our next action, after getting sworn in, will be to accept a rules package, as to what governs us over the next two years, and that, i think, unfortunately, along with what has happened the last few days, portends a fairly rocky, unfortunately, couple of years. liz: he says he hopes mccarthy will reach across the aisle and be willing to work with

democrats to find a compromise. ok, a flying boat and an ai exoskeleton are just two of innovations getting a lot of buzz at this year's ces convention. the exoskeleton looks similar to a backpack to it it is designed for workers in physically demanding jobs. the company behind the technology says it is primarily used in logistics and warehousing but is expanding into health care and construction work. >> it keeps people healthy when they lift. so when i lift a heavy load, the exoskeleton is now helping me to move upwards. and that way, it helps to keep my lower back healthy. liz: also getting a lot of attention at the tradeshow is this candela c8 flying boat. the creators say it is the first long speed and electric flying boat. it reduces energy consumption by 80% compared to other

liz: mayor breed thanked congresswoman nancy pelosi for steering millions to the project. after a long night into see, that speakership vote, pelosi -- in d.c., that speakership vote, pelosi said she had to be here. speaker pelosi: we were in session until very late last night, get on the plane, come here, and said this is a family affair for us. >> ♪ back, back, way back ♪ liz: the project has $1.9 billion over budget by original estimates. construction started over a decade ago and ran late. but it is done. street repair crews in san francisco started working on erosion control on the great highway. this is south of swope boulevard on ocean beach. this work is not new for city crews. the upper great highway has long been impacted by sand filled up. abc 7 reporter suzanne phan is looking at what is being done to make sure service stays on track.

suzanne: if you take b.a.r.t., give yourself more time, about 20 minutes or so, for trains to arrive. more trains are out for repair, and more trains will be operating slower, given the exceptionally rainy conditions. b.a.r.t. authorities say train cars need to get wheels repaired every year when the wheels get wet. >> during slippery rail, what happens is that the wheels are not able to spin as normal. what they will do is they will lock up a bit at times or they are not just spinning correctly, and that dragging motion, that grinding motion, creates a flat spot. suzanne: right now, about 100 of b.a.r.t.'s 862 cars are having their wheels reshaped. bart says it is working around the clock to make meat needs repairs, so riders should expected see shorter trains for the next couple of days, even weeks. b.a.r.t. also has crews on standby. >> we clean all the drains out in advance. we check our pumps, because

pumps are important if we see flooding at our stations. we keep chainsaws nearby, because trees and tree limbs will come at some point, fall on tracks. >> the 80-foot eucalyptus tree that fell across the tracks. suzanne: caltrain had to deal with a downed tree this week. it shut down service for about 12 hours between hillsdale and mills break. >> we have an arborist inspecting the rest of the trees, trying to determine if there are other risks. suzanne: in san francisco, suzanne phan, abc7 news. liz: back in november, mta admitted it used red party cups , solo cups as drain pipes. it went viral. according to muni authorities, those cups were removed two days later. water intrusion in persistent weeks have been a problem for the system. lisa, it might continue to be a problem, as we are getting more and more rain as we start 2023. lisa: that is right, and the trend continues over the overnight and monday night.

probably woke you up. this morning, some thunder exiting the north bay and the central valley. so live doppler 7 up on all the activity throughout california, and look it is offshore, multiple rounds of rain, an unstable atmosphere as we get behind this system, and the next one queuing up even stronger. here is a look right now at where the thunderstorm activity is lifting off to the north and east, i-80 around vacaville, and taking it down toward fairfield, a little wet weather, things are lightning up around highway 29, st. helena, and right here, the bridge over into richmond and san pablo, looking at some light showers per the rest of the bay area has been dry or continue to be dry throughout the day today, but notice we are still looking at that snow in the sierra nevada, temperatures anywhere from the upper 20's to low 30's. the next system bringing in

southerly winds. the snow level will be rising into monday. gusty winds exiting without rain, but sfo still at 25 miles an hour. upper le for our wind advisory to stay with us until 1:00. so 30 to maybe 32, 35 miles ane. 50 in santa rosa, and as that system and the leftover showers exit early this morning, we are left with a lot of cloud cover and a nice, dry slot not only through the afternoon but through the evening hours. . it is not until about 8:00, 6:00, 7:00, some might shower to become a bait :00, we are getting into the rain. heaviest rain happens after midnight. strong storms bring heavy downpours on possibility of some hail, and the flooding concerns renewed again. there's our break into early monday, monday afternoon, and once again, into early tuesday,

you can see why the flood threat is with us through tuesday, and then behind this, we are still looking at rain here here's a look at late tuesday where we still have some downpours. it looks wysms behindhi but it stillosryets wei thd week of january. rainfall amounts through 10:00 on tuesday, anywhere from 1.5 inches to 2.5 inches in the north bay. the bulk of this will continue to shift from the south, from santa cruz mountains, big sur, where we have had all sorts of problems. if you see that three inches, that could be upwards of five and six inches around been moment. the forecast highlights -- around been loman. the forecast highlights stronger level 3 system tonight, then more rain. our winter storm warning expanded into wednesday, lake tahoe area, through late tuesday, anywhere from two feet to three feet after we get those

rising snow levels a little lower and that level 2 system out of here, level three tonight into monday with that elevated flood threat, gusty winds again, and then after tuesday, you can see we still have some showers around, a little too far to pinpoint the amount and intensity, but at this point, they do not look as strong as last night. liz: it looks like a conveyor belt. lisa: exactly. that is so hard to predict, atmosphere of -- atmospheric rivers, and when we get into the system itself, we will rely on radar and satellite and, yeah, how quickly things can move committee changes. liz: we will certainly cpa lisa, thank you. just ahead, staying safe during this next system.

and tiburon, east bay in san pablo, hercules, looking at just a few light showers. the wind going with the rain, and if it all ends and exits out of here, it is a quiet day, but we still have that wind advisory with winds up to 20 and 30 miles an hour if you are in a heavier shower throughout about 1:00. the flood threat continues through tuesday could we will have more heavy rain tonight with an even stronger system could it is a level three in our exclusive abc 7 storm impact scale from late tonight into early monday, moderate to heavy rain. the flood threat with us, the possibility shall things ending an ut wds and a few renegades showers ending early. we will look at when the rain starts and add up the justice sunday, monday, tuesday, there is more after that. liz? liz: ok, lisa, thank you.

tense moments in c valley, as firefighters tried to rescue a man pinned under a massive tree that fell on his home. authorities say the tree ways -- weighs close to 200 tons. neighbors who watched the rescue say the man is lucky to be alive. we do want to warn you, some of the images you are about to see will be disturbing. abc 7 news reporter anser hassan was there and when this the dramatic rescue. -- witnessed the dramatic rescue. anser: this is the moment first responders were able to carry out this father, who was trapped under a eucalyptus tree that fell on his roof. michelle: there was a very loud explosion, a rubble. -- rumble. my first thought was an earthquake, then the power went out. anser: michelle austin lives nearby. she tried to comfort the man'sms

covered with stuff on the couch, and the tree was being supported by parts of walls of the home and part of the couch, so they were being very careful about securing the surrounding environment.ba. chie carlin: fit company arrived on scene, found a house cut in half by a large eucalyptus. anser: kent carlin is the battalion chief for the alameda county fire department says the tree probably weighs between 150 and almost an hour to free the man. batt. chief carlin: we were able to do a lift with equipment. we were able to pull him out. we had two cranes on scene. luckily we did not have to use them. anser: some residents say they have complained to the city about these massive trees that run along the creek behind the home and the threat of them falling. jason rogers grew up on this street. he and his father came out to see the damage. jason: the house is split in half. it is shocking.

there are so many eucalyptus trees behind these homes, they are so tall, they just sway. it was only a matter of time before, i guess, this happened. anser: as neighbors watched the rescue, austin says his family got lucky. michelle: if he had not been on the couch right where he was, or if the whole family had been there, it could have been a whole lot worse. anser: anser hassan, abc 7 news. liz: ugh, such a scary situation. the man had damage to his legs. the battalion chief says the wife and four kids were able to get out safely. the father did suffer injuries to his legs, but the battalion chief says they do not know the extent of the injuries. county official said a storm caused significant damage throughout the coming and along the coast. look up santa cruz is making funds available. we are seeing more damage in santa cruz right now, the pathway at mitchell cove was

washed away after the warning. -- after the storm. this was chaired by justin mulvaney, who took this video. the cove sits just northwest of the boardwalk. in the north bay, the next round of storms is bringing flooding to some communities along the russian river. fire departments across the region are on standby right now, ready for possible water rescues and evacuations. abc 7 news reporter cornell barnard has the latest from sonoma county, where first responders are getting the first look at river levels from the air. . cornell: check out new video of a waterlogged sonoma county russian river, shot by sonoma one. the county's fire district's chopper. saturday's reconnaissance mission showed swollen creeks and lagoons, the russian river now reaching the top of the banks. with more storms on the way, his impressions were sobering. -- abc7 news was there when sonoma

county fire district chief mark heine landed after surveying the rising water and with more storms on the way, his impressions were sobering. chief heine: i think the flooding we're going to see will reach disaster proportions, getting into businesses, residences and cutting off access roads. cornell: many folks in guerneville have been getting ready this week for flooding and possible evacuations, stacking sandbags around shops and homes. danniel: right now, we don't have power. we haven't had power since wednesday afternoon. cornell: danniel falcon-schneider lives in cazadero, where toppled trees are everywhere. what did the highway look like thursday morning. danniel: like a tornado went through. you couldn't see the asphalt, just all the branches. cornell: he worries flood water from the river could leave him stranded. danniel: my biggest fear for me is being stuck on that side of guerneville, so the west side. cornell: the russian river isn't the only area first responders are concerned about, many are watching flood-prone santa rosa creek. and firefighters are getting ready for possible water rescues. swift water rescue teams, like this one in santa rosa, have been doing

last-minute training on the russian river and santa rosa creek, ready to respond to emergencies in real time. marshal lowenthal: they've been busy not only training but also pre-surveying our creeks and streams finding problem spots so we are doing just everything we can to be prepared. cornell: firefighters urge folks living near creeks and rivers to be ready to leave their homes if water starts to rise. chief heine: have a plan b and have a go-bag packed, where you are going to go, how you'll connect with your family, and how you will communicate, especially if it is at night and if you lose power. cornell: in sonoma county, cornell barnard, abc 7 news. liz: this morning, they will be handing out more sandbags to city residents. yesterday, people got up to 10 sandbags per house or business at the operations yard at kansas and marin street. last week, more than 14,000 sandbags had been distributed. the operations yard will be got today from 8:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. as you prepare for more rain, just know that we do have a list of storm resources for you. it includes sandbag locations, warming centers, and shelters. go to abc7news.com/takeaction.

to a lot of touching tributes for damar hamlin in jacksonville. they held a prayer circle, and hamlin's jersey was displayed on the media mesh wall outside of the stadium in las vegas on saturday. the chiefs and raiders players all wearing love for damar shirts and logos. the bills shared an encouraging update on hamlin, who facetimed with the team. >> the thing that makes me laugh is he did this to the guys right away. >> to see that boy's face, see him smile, see him go like this in the camera, it was everything. >> he has just got some staple things that they know him for in -- and that he does, and he made the heart symbol probably more than anything. he said "i love you, boys," and , of course, i think i got the guys. chris: hamlin even tweeted on saturday and said putting love into the world comes back three times as much. thankful for everyone who has reached out and prayed. this will make me stronger on the road to recovery. keep praying for me.
