rains every day. drew: is this how normal winters are now? kumasi: not since i've been here. people told it was like this, but i thought no. drew: you can hold off until about 9 a.m. to travel, you will be in so much better shape. it is rainy and windy out there. it is raining everywhere, with scattered downpours as well. it is gusty, winds coming in between 18 mph and 20 mph. we have seen gusts of 40 mph. there is a level three strong storm until 9 a.m. today. that's the worst rain and wind. the flood threat is still with us, also some possible wind damage. more trees coming down overnight, likely a few more this morning. we do have a lot of water on the roadways. hour-by-hour on future weather, timing out the storm. we will have that in a few minutes. kumasi: a new video into the

newsroom of a rockslide. this is along bear creek road, along highway 35 overnight. they want to make sure drivers are aware of this. reggie: there's also a rockslide in north bay this morning. it happened on pine flat road. you can see that large boulder and several small rocks are blocking the road. kumasi: on the peninsula, a tree has fallen on the road outside of a home in san bruno. were you seeing right now? reporter: we d here in san bruno only a few moments ago. if you take a look right behind me, this is the damage we are seeing, a massive tree fell on a home and car. it does appear as though a lot of the damages on top of the garage of the home, although it is not clear how much damage this home is really experiencing, although it is completely taped off at this

moment. we do know this was first reported right after 3:00 this morning, so just about three hours ago, when this massive cree fell, -- massive tree fell. we do not have word on any injuries just yet. as you can see, the house has already been taped off with caution tape. it was a similar story in castro valley over the weekend. a giant eucalyptus tree fell onto a home in castro valley, pinning a man underneath. firefighters spent almost an hour trying to rescue can. his wife and four children were able to get out safely. >> if he hadn't been on the couch right where he was, or if the whole family had been there, it could have been a lot worse. reporter: another pleasanton says they are lucky to be alive after the same thing happened to them. a tree more than 100 feet tall falling right onto their home. the branches broke through the

windows and the roof. the owner says the right side of his house was totaled and they were told to evacuate right away. we checked in with local tree services back here live in san bruno and they say the ground is incredibly saturated right now, so roots are not holding. with more rain like this expected today and more to come throughout the week, they expect it to only get worse, with more trees like this expected to come down throughout the week. again, we are live here in san bruno, monitoring the situation. this is our first look at some pretty severe damage this morning. reporting live in san bruno, lena howland, abc 7 news. reggie: you definitely feel for those people. and those without power today. pg&e's online map shows trouble spots. right now, about 16,000 customers in the dark. progress is being made across the area to get lights back on. more than half of the adages are in the north bay and on the peninsula. the utility is bracing for this

next major storm, which could bring even more outages. kumasi: several neighborhoods facing flooding threats this week. the sonoma county sheriff's office says the river in kernville will crest sometime tomorrow morning. residents in niles canyon could be inundated by the creek. coyote creek poses a threat. in the san lorenzo river could be in flood stage. alerts have been set out to some people living in parts of the south bay near the guadalupe river. minor flooding is forecasted throughout the day, including across the expressway. reggie: officials and others continue to respond to downed trees and car crashes. parts of the area have had unreliable power for the past several days. our abc 7 crew was there as the top of a light pole was not only sparking, but had a small flame. fire and pg&e crews were able to get the fire out, but work is still being done. >> comcast has been out,

cellular service has been out for four days. that's a big concern for folks on the coast, particularly because there is no cell service, so if your internet is out, you are sick and can't call an ambulance, so it's a big problem. reggie: comcast says its technicians are working with pg&e and local agencies to repair the damage from this record-setting winter storm. kumasi: at least five public schools will be closed because of power outages. fort ross elementary and montgomery elementary. the others are in durham bill. -- kernville. reggie: the white house approves governor newsom's request to declare a of emergency. that includes napa, san mateo, sonoma, and santa cruz counties. their quest comes the same day storms battered the sacramento area. some powerful winds were as strong as 70 mph.

residents who live along the river are being urged to evacuate immediately in anticipation of the river flooding over. the same area was slammed by at last weekends atmospheric river, which led to multiple levee failures. at one point, more than 300,000 customers were without power in sacramento county. some people in castro valley are waiting for relief from a giant eucalyptus tree. it fell on a home and pinned a man underneath it. firefighters spent about an hour trying to rescue him. his wife and four kids were able to get out safely. if he hadn't been on the couch right where he was or if the whole family had been there, it could have been a lot worse. this tree fell st house and onto the street. they can get the power back on once the street is clear, which will happen sometime this morning. residents have complained to the city about this massive tree and several trees along the creek

drew: we are watching rivers and creeks closely for flooding. this is the guadalupe a lever -- waterloo bay river. we are expecting minor flooding today. it will crest at 9.6 feet, just above flood stage. moderate flooding along the alameda creek. flood stage here is nine feet. this afternoon, it will crest at 11.4 feet, so expect moderate flooding there. we are watching rivers, strings, and creeks this morning. we are watching for heavy rain and gusty winds. here's future whether paid by 9:00 a.m., scattered downpours moving out. by lunchtime, this storm system is out of here for most of us. it is a kolmar afternoon and evening. our next storm arrives overnight tonight. morning rain and wind, upper 50's deliver 60's, but tomorrow, a level to moderate storm is moving in here. our by our for this storm and a

winter storm coming in later. let's see how traffic is doing. kristen: there are over -- jobina: there are over 70 incidents reported by chp right now. we don't have time to go through all of those, so let's focus on larger problems. a mudslide in saratoga before skyline. all lanes are now blocked in that area. in piedmont, that purple line on the map is all southbound lanes are shut down. that is because of a tree down in that area. also, a sig alert. this is right between the summit and scotts valley at redwood estates due to a tree that came down. there is no estimated time as to when all those lanes will reopen. we have an overturned vehicle on northbound 880 past davis street. you'll run into a big slowdown in this area. also, roadway flooding in san lorenzo on 880. we will wrap up with a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza. kumasi: coming up, aggressive

reggie: this morning, president biden is waking up in mexico city, head of a meeting with mexican leaders. they are set to talk about the border and supply chain this is his first visit to the border since taking office. jobina: el paso is one of the areas who has seen one of the biggest surge of emigrants turned across the border. greg abbott handed the president a letter outlining his plans to address the situation. mr. biden then that with border patrol guards and toured a migrant processing center. he made no public comments, but the public homeland security secretary is putting pressure. >> we want individuals who qualify for relief under our lost to come to the united states in a safe and orderly way. jobina: earlier this month, president biden did announce new policies to cut down on illegal

crossings into the u.s.. they include expanding a program to allow more migrants to apply for a program. reggie: glances -- classes have been canceled after a six-year-old boy intentionally shot his teacher. that shooting happened friday in a first grade class at richneck elementary school. police say the student, who has not been identified because of his age, shut the teacher after some sort of altercation. she suffered life-threatening injuries. she is not reportedly stable and improving at a local hospital. officials are now investigating how that boy was able to get the gun. in massachusetts, a man is due in court today in connection with his wife's disappearance she has not been seen since new year's day. brian is accused of misleadi the investigation for the search of his wife. his suv has been impounded for additional information. the woman was seen in the home of the early morning hours of

new year's day. she was post to take a rideshare to the airport for an early flight, but she never got on the flight. >> that's one of the investigative leads we are tracking down. 2021o t autigatorsl said this is not related to the case. before the arrest, search the family home, including draining the backyard pool and clearing debris to search for clues. today, still no sign of the wife. the 49ers now know who they are going to play when the playoffs start next week. it is their division rival, the seattle seahawks. kickoff is 1:30 at levi's stadium. they were beat for the 10th straight win yesterday. the last goal is winning the super bowl. >> i feel like we still haven't played tower full potential yet. we look at it as a challenge, but we are also excited.

reggie: really good news. drew: love that. ok, it's wet out there. this is a live look at walnut creek. it is wet out there this morning. it is also windy and spots as well. a flood watch in effect for the entire region through tomorrow afternoon, meaning everyone is fair game for new areas of flooding, as we see this storm moved through and another one tomorrow. here is live doppler seven. everybody is seeing ring right now. scattered downpours as well, pthwilow visibility out there s morning because of this storm moving through. the rain falling is bringing visibility down to two miles in some spots. on the exclusive abc 7 storm impact scale, it is a level three strong storm. after 9 a.m., things will really calm down. the afternoon and evening is a lot drier and quieter when it comes to the winds.

i just want to give you an idea of what is occurring. this one is near gilroy. they are reporting very deep water and both lanes are flooded. that is what we are encountering this morning as this level three strong storm on the exclusive storm impact scale moves through. it is until 9 a.m. if you can hold off on until after 9:00 today, your deck she will be in better shape. we have seen wind gusts upward of 30 to 40 mph p at we will go hour-by-hour on future weather, show you the storm's exit and another that quickly moves in on its heels. we will show you all that in a few minutes. reggie: new video into the newsroom of flooding across the north bay. in a bodega, a large sinkhole on seamen creek road. that was discovered early on saturday morning. that is now washed out. it is unclear, and people might be cut off because of it. speaking of damage across the

bay area, just this morning, we saw a tree fall on top of a house in san bruno. that is where lena howland arrived. she got there about a half-hour ago. what does it look like up close? lena: hey, they are. we are in a residential neighborhood here in san bruno. you can see right behind me here, a massive tree fell on a home and a vehicle. it is quite a bit of damage and quite a sight to see. this has also knocked out power for all of the homes on the side of the street here on pacific heights boulevard and surrounding neighborhoods. according to the pg&e outage map, this is impacting at least 500 neighbors across this area. take a look at this video taken shortly after that tree fell. it was first reported falling after 3:00 this morning, crunching a blue sedan and the garage of the home. that is where we have seen the most damage. no word on any injuries just yet, but the house has already

federal assistance due to the storms flooding and mudslides that started y. governor gavin newsom says there have been mobilized resources to respond to flooding, power outages and disaster. they are urging you to use common sense and avoid putting yourself in dangerous situations. >> just a foot of water and your car is floating. half a foot of water and you are off your feet. half a foot of water, you are losing control of your vehicle. we are seeing people go around these detours because they don't see any obstacles. they think everything is fine, but they are putting their lives at risk and putting first responders's lives at risk. gloria: the california national guard has mobilized troops and has four rescue helicopters on standby, including one in the bay area. ambulance strike teams have also been activated around this -- around the state.

they will help the hardest areas. robbers are being asked to postpone travel if possible. at 1:00 today, the department of water resources is having a news conference to discuss the latest on flooding concerns in parts of california, as well as current forecasts for rivers and the status of state reservoirs and storage. reggie: thank you so much. in the north bay, many are cleaning up and drying out after the last round of storms, which brought thunder, lightning, and chaos to the region. the sheriff's office now says the river at kernville will crest sometime tomorrow morning. but it won't be as bad as what we saw in 2019. it will only flood low-lying areas around the river. our reporter is in it for still with that. >> two or three feet of water in the garage. reporter: this was the flooding inside the apartment in forest will, after a storm blew through

thursday night. it >> happened so fast. >>i can see water rushing down the hillside. we were concerned. 10 minutes later and there is already a foot of water outside my door. reporter: grace said she grabbed what she could and move to higher ground, but sadly she mows that she lost most of her belongings. >> i was worried about my close. but as it got higher in a matter of minutes, i realized i needed to get out my birth certificate, my money, my computer. reporter: lightning lit up the sky, bringing thunder and heavy rain. winds blew down this carport on snyder lane, damaging the cars beneath it. in healdsburg, a possible lightning strike split this power pole in half, cutting power to a neighborhood, and countless big trees fell, like this one, which closed westside road in forest hill. not far from that, a mudslide closed parts of the same road. in santa rosa, one person was injured after this tree fell on the car they were working on.

check out this flooding on mark west station road and windsor. drivers plow through, cyclists included. >> on the one hand, it's really good. we really need the rain and water. on the other hand, it's extreme. it such a big extreme from droughts and fires to this. it's a lot to handle. reporter: firefighter say there is good news for the rushing river. it could be lower than first thought, but all that remains in flux. >> the forecasted river levels of the flood stages continues to change because these are dynamic storms. river levels continue to fluctuate and we are continuing to monitor that. reporter: back at grace's apartment, few things can be salvaged. she is looking for a new home, but offers this advice to others. >> if you are anywhere near where flooding happens, i would recommend packing a bag. flooding happened so fast. reporter: this area is closed

because of the nearby river. officials are asking everyone near flood prone areas to be ready to leave because more storms are on the way. kumasi: b, urgent landslide is threatening homes in richmond. crews stabilized it yesterday, although an evacuation order is still in effect until further notice. a crack was discovered in a hillside early last week. 15 homes had to be evacuated. the area was secured with tarps, but they blew off last night because of the high winds. crews have now resecured them with sandbags. reggie: now to the sierra and a lid look from our lake tahoe area. a winter storm warning is in effect there through wednesday morning. here's a look at video from palisades tahoe ski resort. 18 inches expected there tomorrow night. waves reaching for feet on lake tahoe. kumasi: you can always track the

relief among students and parents now that an arrest has been made, but the school is still promising new security measures, including officers on campus and patrols in nearby neighborhoods. there's is a different feeling among students just 30 minutes away at washington state university. they are stunned, remembering the classmate who is now under arrest for the brutal murders. they told a local newspaper that the criminology student often spoke up during classroom discussions of murder investigations. but when the topic of the idaho slayings came up, one student said, " he was completely silent." according to investigators, the 20 to suspect was on their radar as early as november 29, 16 days after the students were bird -- were brutally stabbed to death. according to the affidavit, one of the surviving roommates was awake at the time of the murders, telling the police the murderer came within feet of her bedroom door as he exited the house. no one called 911 for another

feet. this is near big tree, near felton as well. at that level, we defined major flooding in the felton grove neighborhood. also, we will find several feet of deep water inundating the covered bridge. we're going to experience flooding here. there is a flash flood warning in effect. that's the most severe flood warning you can get. the water is rising rapidly. if you know anybody in this region, you want to alert them that that river is rising very quickly. we are keeping an eye on that all morning long because of a level three strong storm overhead. it is just a wet morning out there. in fact, low visibility as well. it is tough to see at times. here's the exclusive abc 7 storm impact scale. it is a level three strong storm. thank fully, just two hours left, bringing heavy rain and a flood threat, and possible wind damage. this afternoon, much lighter out there, but the winds pick up
