of sunshine a heavy burst of rain overwhelmed storm drains in san francisco which obviously kept street crews very busy. good evening thank you for joining us i am dan ashley. >> i'm ama daetz we've been tracking the storm all day but the thunder, lightning and hail have made waited for blue skies this is a live look outside. >> that is nice to see if the latest on the conditions and the rain that remains in the forecast go to our meteorologist sandy patel more coming? collects absolutely we are not done with the storms let's take a look at live doppler 7 right now while some of you may be seeing blue skies we are still tracking thunderstorms as a matter of fact a strong thunderstorm is moving through sonoma right now as we get you into the steep street level radar you will notice highway 101 we are thinking -- seeing the thunderstorms, heading towards mark west springs careful out there because with

the thunderstorms we are going to see those downpours continuing and hail as well. as we look at the east bay around vasco road you are seeing some moderate rainfall right now widening out the picture and you will notice that thunderstorms have been firing up all morning and afternoon we have seen gusty winds as high as 60 or 70 miles an hour earlier this morning and we go our by our 6:00 tonight the focus is in the north bay as we head towards 8:00 p.m. still some scattered showers and thunderstorms by 11 p.m. it starts to wind down the next round comes in and that has prompted the national weather service to extend flood watch through tomorrow afternoon for solano county i would not be surprised if this gets extended for the entire bay area for tomorrow as we are expecting another storm. this evening it is now a level one on our exclusive storm impact scale, scattered showers still a thunder chance and gusty winds although not quite as strong as earlier today flood right continues especially under those thunderstorms where you get caught under a downpour the

ground is saturated so any rain that falls is going to exacerbate existing problems and were going to see the continuation of downed trees. right now the winds are gusting to about 30 at sfo, i will be back with a closer look at the timeline of our next storm which is a level two. >> lightning struck the top of the 48th st transamerica pyramid, the wind heavy rain and hail caused trees to topple in more flooding throughout san francisco abc seven news reporter was out in the elements and joins us live, leeann. >> do we refer to this as once in a blue moon? i would say no how about this one hell froze over today because i don't ever remember being in san francisco and witnessing something like what we saw today. this is what i mean. one needed to see it to believe it a muni bus crushed by a tree on sutter near stockton in downtown san francisco, for sam

the owner of this suv it was a terrifying moment when the tree also took down powerlines while he was still inside the car. >> everything started getting dark i heard branches hitting the car, i looked around and saw sparks everywhere around me. >> the powerlines were active? >> they were active, they still were until now that is why we can't go back to the car. >> no one inside the bus was injured shortly after the national weather service issued a flash flood warning for san francisco, daly city in south san francisco. five minutes later a hailstorm covered the city, with it came lightning, dozens of strikes across the city including on the iconic sutro tower. captured it from far away and up close. the heavy downpour caused more flooding's around the city making it dangerous for cars to be on city streets. within minutes of us being there public works managed to clear the blocked storm drain. here is some of the debris they

collected all morning. but the fallen trees continued to be the city's main issue, since new year's eve public works has responded to about 1000 downed trees and branches, today alone 14. >> we have been out hustling all day long since predawn mainly dealing with downed trees that is the big issue right now as well as localized flooding. >> this morning crews worked quickly on removing this black would acacia which fell on a car, the owner was not inside >> the ground is so wet it is a low-lying area and water is pulling up tree is heavy and is going to fall over. >> he has worked for public works for years and says this is as bad as it gets. >> i would say this is the worst winter i have seen in the short amount of time. i have been through wetter winters but this is stacking up to be as far as tree failures one of the worst winters i've ever seen. >> i have to agree with him this is davis street, here on davison

broadway it is closed here and the embarcadero because yet another fallen tree, this one fell on a car. a little damage they the owner is still waiting for the department of public works to come. they told me that this car and the tree is very high in the queue but it tells you what they are dealing with. they are overwhelmed. >> obviously they are doing the best they can can you tell us a little more about how hard they are working to get this cleanup done? >> let me tell you i have spoken all day to cruise, we were following one particular crew and they are exhausted. like we all are. they are working 12, 14, 16 hour days. it is one after the other. not a single break for them. they will be so elate of the stops, they know they have about one more week may be a little longer before the rain stops but they need a break.

>> sounds like we all do at this point, thank you. >> two people were rescued from their electrified vehicle after a large tree fell on top of the car in san francisco this afternoon it happened on fulton street between 19th and 20th high winds push the tree into some powerlines and onto two vehicles saturated soil has weakened it so many trees as you are hearing, one of those cars was occupied the people stayed inside until crews turned off the power to the line that was on top of the vehicle if they had tried to get out it would have been very dangerous. good tips stay in your car until help arrives. >> in the santa cruz mountains the town of felton has been pummeled with rain over the last week and a half this is incredible video of the widespread flooding just yesterday. now abc seven news reporter dustin dorsey joins us from felton with the latest on the recovery and cleanup. >> what a difference a day makes, this is the felton grove neighborhood that is the covered bridge county park and yesterday

it was completely covered by floodwaters. when the san lorenzo river swelled up to a near record 24 and a half feet. yesterday it was a town underwater today a town under mud. you can see just how floodwaters rose up to around 3 feet high along some of the homes. neighbors are now busy cleaning up after the latest storm they say it is too hard to say when things will get back to normal. with all this rain and flooding they haven't been really home since the new year began. >> we have been in and out in the past week and a half we were evacuated and then came home and then evacuated again. it has been fine. kind of stressful not knowing what is happening to the house but like i said we are ready to get back home and cleanup. >> that cleanup is expected to last week's according to neighbors they joked it's nice to live at the river, it's not as great living in the river. thankfully residents we spoke with are staying positive saying the entire neighborhood is really coming together during

this cleanup. in felton dustin dorsey abc7news. >> governor newsom is in santa cruz county for a close-up look at the storm damage, the governor toward capitola village where there has been an incredible community effort to clean up all of the debris from the big waves, high tides and rain swollen creek >> it's remarkable walking through the businesses, how many of the business men and women and owners of these businesses how many people showed up and said they just needed one thing which was gloves and then took it upon themselves to help clear out the debris and get this community back on its feet and that's the spirit that marks these moments. >> the governor says he is in touch with president biden who has approved a federal declaration in a total of 31 california counties. >> lots of power outages tonight take a look at the locations indicated on this outage map tonight the south bay is the hardest hit area with more than

51 1000 customers without power as of about a half-hour ago san mateo county is also experiencing a high number of outages with about 13,000 500 customers affected. >> on the peninsula crews have been busy responding to downed power lines and trees falling into houses, our abc news reporter has been covering that part of the bay area and has the latest. >> in the middle of the night the larsson family home in brentwood city trembled. they thought it was just the wind turned into moments of panic. >> the next thing we know it is a giant crash the whole building shakes it felt like an earthquake the dog came running and we can hear glass shattering and water pouring the. >> inside their home tree bear inches can be seen in the ceiling through their living room there dog was right below it. >> how close was the tree to your bedroom? >> 10 feet. our bet is next to a window. my fear was that it was going to come through her window at some point. >> throughout the peninsula crews have been responding to

downed trees and power lines we witnessed it as we drove out of the kings mountain area. >> pg&e just came and moved the powerlines. >> some of the strongest wind gust reached almost 70 miles per hour in the peninsula. >> i thought it was scaffolding. >> at 2 a.m. those winds ripped off the roof of this apartment complex in south san francisco displacing at least 10 residents. >> the roof deck material come detached from the building and was hanging in front of the building we had to go inside to make sure residents were safe. >> miraculously no injuries were reported as the storm continues the national weather service placed multiple cities under a flash flood warning. how at risk is this area from a flash flood? >> we have had many storms come through in the last 10 days and our streams and rivers and creeks are pretty high, the good thing is we had a day here where we haven't had a lot of excessive raining. >> as for the larson's they are counting their blessings.

called the police there must be 25 calls on record spent two days at a homeless shelter, two days in jail and then they drop them back on the street. >> monday when she said she refused to move and resisted help he sprayed her down as a last resort. >> this woman, it is a that very sad situation and she is psychotic. >> this is not the first time we have seen methods to deter congregated, this church installed sprinklers as a way to prevent people from sleeping in doorways, also the installation of boulders to keep people away. multiple people -- describe this woman as a nuisance. there are better ways to deal with these situations. >> you can call 311 to get assistance or looking up different mental health services that are in san francisco, some

toward sea ranch and 5:47 a few lighter showers around highway 101 in the south bay around monterey road between coyote and morgan hill waves are up a high surf warning until 2 a.m. tomorrow but is high surf advisory for the northern coast a large breakers talking 20 to 25 feet currently bodega bay is reporting 15 foot waves careful if you're going to go check out the waves. temperatures in the 40's and 50's, a live look from our walnut creek camera and you will notice some blue sky so you may be thinking it's done but it's not quite done showers and possible thunder storms through this evening another thunderstorm arrives tomorrow in the wet pattern continues into next week on our exclusive storm impact scale this is a light level one this evening we are expecting scattered showers with the isolated under still gusty although not as strong as earlier in the morning flood threat and downed trees still continue so definitely don't let your guards down as we look at 6:00 the focus is on the north bay still in that same general vicinity at 8 p.m. but now that the ground is so so any rain is

just going to aggravate problems as we look at 5:00 a.m.. here is your next storm the commute begins in the rainfall intensity will pick up as we head towards noontime some moderate to brief heavy rainfall although this is not going to be a repeat of today's storm we are still going to see some pockets of moderate rain going into tomorrow afternoon. how rainfall totals will range anywhere from a 10th of the inch two over 2 inches in the far northern end of our viewing area. the windsor many gusty but the increase as we head towards tomorrow morning and tomorrow afternoon gusts over 40 miles 48 miles an hour at the gusty winds will continue tomorrow night. in the mountains this is a winter storm warning until 4 a.m. tomorrow we are talking about additional several feet of snow especially of the highest passes gusty winds will make for difficult conditions as far as driving. 40's and 50's under temperatures windy and wet tomorrow morning keep your umbrella sandy it is

the state in san luis obispo county the search continues for a five-year-old boy swept away by the raging water, aerial cruise and dive teams searched for the boy today and bystanders were able to save the mother when her vehicle got stuck in a creek near paso robles however the boy was swept away. in montecito which is home to many celebrities including ellen degeneres and evacuation order is in effect creeks are swollen and roadways have turned into rivers. >> the creeks next to our house never flows and it's probably about 9 feet up we were forced to evacuate. we need to be nicer to mother nature. >> ellen degeneres there as you see and a massive sinkhole swallowed two cars yesterday firefighters rescued two victims from this 15 foot sinkhole and suffered minor injuries. >> insane. we have much more news ahead.
