and windy tomorrow with another level 2 storm. we still have thunderstorms firing up in the northern part of our viewing area. as we get you in closer, fort ross road getting underscore activity. we will tracking lightning strikes, 10 so far in this area. as we tracked this for you, heading into windsor at 620 a short time later. toward the south bay, it is lighter showers between morgan hill and san martin on highway 101 as we look at street-level radar. it has been an active day with strong thunderstorms, wind, hail . that system has brought sierra snowfall, and they are going to continue to see more. 7:00, it is still going to be in the northern part of our viewing area, continuing at 9:00 p.m. late tonight it starts to wind down, but there is a flood watch for solano county that has been extended through tomorrow afternoon as another storm is

coming our way. our current storm on the impact scale is a level 1. gusty winds with a flooding threat and downed trees continuing. when discussing up to 30 miles per hour now at sfo. -- winds gusting up to 30 miles per hour now at sfo. dan: we saw extreme weather hit san francisco this afternoon, but the entire bay area was affected. we have live team coverage for you, including leslie brinkley in the east bay, zach fuentes in the south bay. first, let's hear from leanne melendez, live in the city. lyanne: dan, it was like watching the sky fall this afternoon. we witnessed the most unusual weather event in san francisco in years if not, i would say, ever. it started with rain and then we saw that black, sort of biblical cloud that covered san francisco.

there is what happened next. one needed to see it to believe it, a muni bus crushed in downtown san francisco. for sam, the owner of this black suv, it was a terrifying moment. the tree also took down power lines while he was still inside the car. >> everything started getting dark. i heard wrenches hitting the car. i saw sparks everywhere around. cornell: but the power lines were active. >> and is still active until now. that is why we can't go back to the car. lyanne: no one inside the bus was injured. shortly after, the national weather service issued a flash flood warning for san francisco, daly city, and south san francisco. five and its later, a hailstorm covered the city. with it came lightning, dozens of strikes across the city, including on the iconic sutro tower, captured from far away and up close. the heavy downpour because more flooding's around the city,

making it dangerous for cars to be on city streets. within minutes of us being there , public works managed to clear the blocked storm drain. there is some of the debris they collected all morning. but the fallen trees continued to be the city's main issue. since christmas eve, public works has responded to about 1000 downed trees and ranches. today alone, 14. >> we have been hustling all day long, mainly dealing with downed trees as well as localized flooding. lyanne: this morning, crews worked quickly on removing this black wood acacia which fell in a car. the owner was not inside at the time. >> round is so wet. it is a low-lying area and water is pooling up. trees are heavy. it is going to fall over. lyanne: drew has worked for public works for years and says this is as bad as he's seen it get. >>-three webster winters -- i

have been through wetter winters so far, but so far it is one of the worst i have seen. lyanne: i have been here nearly 29 years and have to agree with him. another tree fell on this car. we have been here pretty much all afternoon, and so has the owner, waiting for crews to remove this tree so he can finally go home to his family. they may or may not come to remove this tree anytime soon. we will have to see. it just shows you how overwhelmed the department of public works is. more to come. live in san francisco, leanne melendez, abc7news. ama: thank you so much. dan: two people were rescued after a power line came down on their car in san francisco this afternoon. that can be dangerous. at been on fulton street between 19th and 20th avenues -- it happened on fulton street between 19th and 20th avenues.

two people were inside one of the cars. >> if you have an electrical wire on top of the car and it is hot, you will not know that. it can still be hot. s thing to do, call for the fire department or emergency services. dan: people stayed inside the car until crews turned off power to the live wire. staying in the vehicle most likely saved their lives. ama: this tree withstood the midday storm, but part of it split apart hours later in san francisco's north beach area, took down a street traffic light which continued to change from red to green biologist on the ground. traffic around broadway and columbus was a mess well crews cleared the tree and prepared the traffic lights. dan: the east bay got hail, rain, and a lot of damage from the wind. leslie is live in bowman creek with a look at the damage. leslie: some bad damage here, dan, that has caused mayhem all day in walnut creek is the

closure of eastbound ygnacio valley road. that is a major thoroughfare. behind me, you can see the pg&e crews trying to fix these linebreaks. they are advising people to avoid rose -- roads near downtown walnut creek and to avoid eastbound ygn civic to tampico, i believe. westbound is open. traffic. around 2:00 a.m. tuesday morning, strong winds and soaking rains took down a big eucalyptus tree at oak grove and ygnacio valley road and fell a huge pine tree at marsh banks and ygnacio valley road, forcing the closure of this major affair to all eastbound traffic, which

had far-reaching implications to not only walnut creek, but concord and beyond. >> you can imagine polls and weight of the tree brings the top half of the pole. we cannot put the power lines back on that, so they have to replace those poles. my understanding, three to four have been impacted. leslie: nearby residents lost power, as did nearby doctors offices, many of which were forced to cancel appointments. one hospital relied on emergency generators until power was restored. >> we did not have to divert any ambulance traffic. ambulances are still getting through. we did not have to divert trauma cases either. the biggest impact was just a little bit of delay for some of our first surgeries of the morning. leslie: john yours emergency --

through another wild weather day out here. in the east bay, i'm leslie brinkley, abc7news. dan: came through there today. it was a real mess. ama: storms have caused major damage to power and for structure, which has left businesses and homes in the dark for four days. we are live in san jose with the latest. zach? zach: impacted since 2:00 in the morning. crews have been working on the powerlines that have been damaged. times heavy bouts of rain have been going off all day long. pg&e telling us the south bay has been one of the areas hit hardest by power outages, with up to thousands without power at one time, but this area in particular has seen the most physical damage, something that has been a hassle to the people who live and work around here, also frightening.

it is an image shocking the people who know this area best, a huge transmission tower, part of their everyday view, toppled and crumbled. >> i saw this was knocked down. never seen something like this. >> kind of surprised of the magnitude of a tower of that size going down. zach: business is unable to taken customers. >> is crazy how it fell down. zach: anthony owns an auto center along lincoln avenue in san jose, right in the middle of the most expensive damage, the transmission tower that collapsed just behind his building, and next door the restaurant that now has a power line buried in its roof. he knew the power was out at his business, but he did not expect to see what he found. >> i did not think it was that severe, but when i got in, i knew it was going to take more thanda to fi axn this. zach: pg&e leaders on scene spoke about the extent of the damage and the cause. ttneha weight of that tower brt

down two more power poles. zach: pg&e says they have been able to wrap electricity to the majority of customers whose power relies on that transmission tower, but bringing back the distribution lines that get power to these homes and businesses could take days. the impact will be severe. >> i had nine appointments today, had to cancel all of them. just let them know the situation. zach: pg&e says crews will continue working throughout the night. >> this is a historic storm, and we are responding with historic effort, and we are hoping better days are ahead. zach: we are all hoping for better days. right now the focus is on getting those distribution lines back up and running to get these homes and businesses power back running. anthony told us his insurance company says they will be able to help him make up some of the damage he is facing. others are just looking forward

dan: thousands of californians suddenly have storm damage to their homes and businesses and need repairs. ama: contractors are overwhelmed , and fraudsters are always looking. dan: michael finney has advised to deal all of this. michael: to con me storms. you have been seeing the damage across the bay area. -- the you have been seeing the damage across the bay area. but slow down before making big repairs. >> we have two to three feet of water in the garage. michael: for homeowners, waiting out the storm is just the beginning. >> in a tree falls in someone's house, my heart goes to the poor homeowner. hope we get a contract to get them back in their house. michael: michael: the next challenge, how to fix major damage.

>> to your research and avoid rushing into repairs, no matter how badly they are needed. michael: many folks eager to fix the damage, they could fall into a trap. >> get at least three bids and avoid hiring the first contractor, especially if they go door to door. michael: they often target victims and disaster zones, going door-to-door offering repairs. some may be legit, others may be unlicensed or unscrupulous. >> might say, i have leftover materials from another job, do you want me to fix your driveway, and they do a shoddy job. >> if they don't have a website or a name on your truck, your eyebrows need to go up a little bit. you could give someone money and your job is not done, and then chasing them down is a scary place. michael: consumer advocates say find a licensed contractor for the type of work you need.

let's get to the weather. dan: what a day we have had. sandhya patel is joining us with more that is coming. sandhya: we have another level two storm on the way, but for now we have a 1 on our impact scale. still some active weather in the north bay. you will notice a cluster of thunderstorms from fort ross road, heading out towards healdsburg avenue across highway 101. tracking other cells off the coast, going into sea ranchettes 6:26 p.m. toward the south bay, we are still looking at showers around butterfield boulevard, highway 101. this is a live view from zephyr cove, where they are seeing snow. i want to were new, i-80 is close from colfax to the state line due to white out conditions. this year's have seen over a foot of snow so far, and it is still snowing. several feet of snow expected

tomorrow, especially over the highest passes. gusty winds will make for difficult to impossible conditions. they already have chain controls for many roads. a high surf warning in effect until 2:00 a.m. tomorrow. wave heights of 14 to 19 feet. breakers, 20 to 25 feet, careful if you are going to look at those waves. 40's and 50's on the temperatures right now. we take a look at a live picture from our emeryville camera. it is still gusty. and a lot of wind gusts have come down. they were in the 50 to 70 mile-per-hour ranger early this morning if you were woken up. another level two storm arrives tomorrow and our wet pattern continues into next week. the current storm is a 1 on our impact scale. through the evening, expect isolated showers, gusty winds. flood threat continues.

with the thunderstorms, we are still seeing downpours. could lead to more flooding and down trees. focus will remain in the north bay tonight from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., and tomorrow morning that commute gets underway, 5:00 a.m., the first line of wet weather with windy conditions brings as the -- begins as the commute begins. 4:00 p.m., it is starting to lift to the north, and then it is out of here late tomorrow night. this storm will not be quite as intense as what we saw go through today. rainfall projections through tomorrow night will range from anywhere from about a 10th of an inch in the southern viewing area to three quarters of an inch for most parts. in the north bay locations, one to two inches of rain, and the hills will pick up close to three inches of rain. gusty winds expected tomorrow, over 40 miles per hour in the

weather is on the way. ama: the storm follows today's weather whiplash. sudden rounds of rain, hail, and lightning followed by several moments of calm. the cycle only to repeat. dan: powerful downpours washed over the bay area from here in san rafael to santa cruz county, where the weather and rescues in felton after the san lorenzo creek breached its banks. we've got so much rain san francisco and parts of northern san mateo county were on a flood watch this afternoon. during this series of storms, crews have been working round-the-clock trying to keep people safe and cleaning up the debris. ama: today liz kreutz spoke to a nevada resident who escaped injury after a tree fell on her home. liz: it has been an on an on and off day in the north bay. here in san rafael, a downed tree and another tree that fell

on a home in novato. it was a dramatic search in the morning for residence on fairway drive in no votto. -- novato. >> 5:00 in the morning, i felt a crash. liz: the large tree in front of gabriela's home collapsed, falling on her neighbor's home. >> my tree had fallen onto their garage and damaged their car. >> thank god everybody is safe. liz: tatyana lives across the street. >> we did not hear the sound, but there were police, firefighters. liz: crews spent the morning clearing it up, a tow truck coming to take away the damage to bmw. nobody was left hurt, but were left rattled. >> we got a lot of brief, fast-moving weather events along with thunder and lightning. liz: the marin county office of emergency management says the county is dealing with a number of downed trees and flooding.

one issue, flooding at the lucas valley road underpass at highway 101. even with the road blocked off, we saw one driver ignoring the signs and driving through. >> that keeps happening. weather service has a slogan, turn around, don't drown. liz: throughout the day, he was on and off rain, moments of sunshine, followed by gray skies and storms, including a mix of hail. that heavy rain and strong winds leading to spinouts and other issues like this collapsed eucalyptus tree which fell at dominican university in san rafael. arborists are working overtime to deal with issues like that. here at dominican university, it is mostly cleared up, but the tree that really came up from its roots, breaking through the ground. the board of supervisors has just ratified a state of emergency that should provide the county with more resources to deal with issues like this, especially with more rain on the way. in san rafael, liz kreutz, abc 7 news. ama: crews have been busy

responding to downed power lines and trees falling into homes. luz pena shows you the damage. >> in the middle of the night, the larsson family's home in redwood city trembled, what they thought was just the wind turned into moments of panic. >> next thing we know, it is a giant crash, the whole building shakes. it felt like an earthquake. we could hear glass shattering and water pouring. >> inside their home, one of the tree branches can be seen piercing through the ceiling in their room. their dog was right below it. how close was the tree to your bedroom? >> 10 feet, and our bed is next to windows. my fear was it was going to come into our window at some point. luz: crews have been responding to downed trees and power lines. we witnessed it as we drove out of the kings mountain area. pg&e just came and moved the power line. some of the strongest gusts

reached almost 70 miles per hour in the peninsula. >> i thought it was scaffolding. luz: at 2:00 a.m., winds ripped this off the roof of the apartment complex in san francisco. >> the roof decking material had come to test -- come detached from the building. it was hanging in front. went inside, make sure the residents were safe. luz: no injuries were reported. the national weather service placed multiple peninsula cities under a flash flood warning. how secure is this specific area from a flash flood? >> we have had many storms come through in the last 10 days, and are streams and creeks are pretty high. we have not had a lot of excessive rain. luz: as for the larssons are counting their blessings. >> often times we fall asleep on the couch where the roof came in. but this time, for some reason, we just went to bed early and i don't know how that happened,

but it was a miracle. luz: in redwood city, luz pena, abc 7 news. ama: for a list of storm resources, go to abc7news.com /takeaction. dan: the town of felton has been pummeled with rain over the last week and a half, with two major floods in the area. yesterday was definitely the worst. dustin dorsey is in felton. dustin: from one day to the next, a town underwater became a town under mud. the felton grove neighborhood now a swampy mess after a flash flood ripped through early monday morning. >> sheriff's office came in knocking on our door, saying it is about the flood, you need to leave. within two hours, it was three feet high. it is unbelievable how fast it comes up. dustin: about as fast as it went up, it went down, leaving a water stain reminder of how bad

this flooding was area 1982 was the worst storm these residents have seen, and they said 2017 brought a major flood as well, but yesterday stands as the second-highest the san lorenzo river has ever risen. >> it is great living on the river, not in the river. we were expecting a flood, but not like this. dustin: next for these neighbors, the cleanup. most of these homes are raised, leaving damage to many residents' garages and lower levels. >> lost a few things but it as much as we could, put stuff in totes and raised it up a few feet. comparatively a was not bad. dustin: the neighbors healthy bad weather will reside soon enough. it has been almost constant rain since 2023 began. residents had to evacuate twice from major flooding. >> we will wait until the rain stops. supposedly it is going to stop before 2024, but i am not convinced yet. dustin: jokes aside, the people

showers or storms, you are going to see down words or more hail. looking at other of storm reports, we saw dozens of them, hail, rainfall totals. the wettest is spots picking up over an inch of rain, 1.33 in santa rosa, 1.21 in san francisco, over an inch and oakland. even concord picking up over an inch of rain. tomorrow, it is a level two o our scale, light to moderate rain expected, maybe briefly heavy. gusty winds, rough surf. the concern for flooding and downed trees is still there, because now that the ground is saturated, it does not take a whole lot of rain to cause issues. tomorrow morning, as the commute it's underway, so does the storm. moderate rainfall in the lunch i never, briefly heavy going until 4:00 p.m., shifting to the north bay, and winding down later tonight. tomorrow afternoon, you will need the rain gear.
