this wednesday, january 11. kumasi: looking at live doppler 7, a lot going on, drew. what's the timeline? here we go again. drew: luckily thunderstorms are not in the forecast. right now we see light showers for the morning commute which will intensify as the day goes on. here's live doppler 7, showing more showers. more rain's overhead and we are at the start of the storm. it's a level two on the storm impact scale, moderate storm with steadiest rain and strongest winds occurring 11:00 a.m. and five clock p.m.. that's the six hour window. we have the possibility of new pockets of flooding and gusting winds will lightly bring trees down. outside, the exploratorium camera, the city, we have rain on the camera. light showers right now but later today into the early afternoon, that is when the rain is strongest and the winds are gusty. a wind advisory in effect and flood watch is in effect eerie we will show you those in a few minutes. reggie: updating you on breaking news now that we were tracking throat the

departures for domestic flights. gloria rodriguez is live at as a foe. gloria. gloria: good morning. we do have breaking news on this. the faa lifted the ground to on domestic flights. flight operations are resuming at this time. a few passengers said been impacted. one passenger showed me a text they got from their line saying her flight was delayed until 7:00 and it was because of a technology issue. the faa ordered a nationwide pause on all domestic departures until 6:00 our time. this after a computer failure impacting flights around the country. the system affected sent out flight hazards and real-time restrictions to pilots. the white house press secretary tweeted there is no evidence of

kumasi: we are still on storm watch as more heavy rain and high winds are said to hit the bay area. here are the updates. 17 californians lost their lives due to the storms. this is information from governor newsom, adding the death toll is likely to grow. the irs says storm victims will likely have more time to file their taxes. may 15 is the new deadline for business and personal taxes. an uptick in carbon monoxide poisoning's linked to the strong storms the bay area has been seeing. 11 patients have been treated for carbon monoxide poisoning, about half the total they see in a year. damage from the storms is adding up. santa cruz county officials say the price tag to pass $100 million and a bit north it, san jose, power outages are a bigger issue. i want to show you the current pg&e outage map. the last update was 11:00 last night and showed 22,000 people did not have power in the bay area. if you look in the map, the bulk

of the outages on the peninsula and in the lena howland is live on the damage there. >> this is where strong winds took down a massive eucalyptus tree which also took down a transmission tower, almost 140 feet tall. take a look. some of the damage still left behind from this mass. it also knocked down a couple power poles with it which took out power to this neighborhood, still waking up in the dark because of this today. the downed tower and damage it has caused left businesses unable take -- unable to take in customers. alvin auto center in the middle of the most extensive damage, the transmission tower collapsed behind the building. next door, the restaurant now has a powerful buried in its roof. he says he knew before coming to

work the power was out at his business but he did not expect to see the scene he found which forced him to cancel his appointments that day. >> i did not think it was that severe but i got in and it was going to take more than an hour, definitely more than a couple days to fix this. lena: pg&e leaders on scene said the tree that fell was next to the river, and once it fell, it created a domino effect, first taking down the transmission tower and the tower took down two more power poles. i just checked the pg&e outage map and it appears the power is still out in this area for more than 300 customers. they say this was caused this equipment and according to that map, they estimate power will not be restored to this area until after 11:00 tonight. live in san jose, lena howland, abc7news. reggie: on the peninsula, dozens

of people were out of the apartment complex and waking up someplace else after the rain and wind ripped part of their roof off. it happened early yesterday morning on susie way in south san francisco just as we were seeing intense rain and wind. most people in the building had extensive damage to the units and belongings because of a recent storm. -- the recent storm. >> we heard a loud bang, felt the building shake, and thing you know, it is water pouring from everywhere. reggie: water is still seeping from their ceilings, destroying carpets and flooring. authorities deemed the entire building uninhabitable. that leaves residents with thousands of dollars in potential lost property and without a place to stay. they set up a gofundme as they figure out their next move. kumasi: many residents are cleaning up a muddy mess. parts of a town were underwater when the san lorenzo swelled to nearly 25 feet high. that is eight feet over the flood stage. it nearly matched a record set

reggie: we are tracking developing news out of paris. police are on alert after a man attacked people with a knife at a busy train station this morning. we know at least six people were hurt, one of the victims in critical condition. jobina: we are also learning the suspect is in critical condition after he was shot by several police officers. that happened at the north central railway station in paris. paris police a the suspect started attacking people around 645 time a.m. local time after six people were stabbed. officers shot the suspect, several passengers and a police officer were among the people her. authorities say the suspect was stopped within one minute of attacking the first victim. they have not determined a motive for the attack but say the suspect made the weapon himself. kumasi: thank you. a travel nightmare finally over for hundreds of amtrak passengers. they were stuck on a train for more than a day after it got

stranded. authorities say the delay was caused by a freight to rail men in south carolina. csx says the freight train collided with any unoccupied vehicle on the tracks. no one was injured by drivers in the area said it also caused major problems with traffic. >> it took me an extra 30 minutes to get here because i had to go the long way. the traffic is ridiculous. when i came in, it was like three to four 18 wheelers packed up. kumasi: passengers finally made it to florida from virginia this morning. before the trip resumed, passengers were apparently calling 911. the conductor had to tell crews they were not holding them hostage. amtrak said they gave meals and beverages during the detour. reggie: a new study from economists at a new york university linked early retirement to accelerated cognitive decline in the elderly. examining data from china, researchers found access to early retirement plans affected cognitive performance.

departures after a major computer outage overnight but we are learning there are major issues at airports across the country. abc7news reporter gloria rodriguez live at sfo with details about what is going on now. gloria? gloria: good morning, kumasi. the breaking news, the faa lifted the ground stop on domestic flights here in the u.s. after an overnight outage. the faa says flight operations are resuming gradually. however, we know that may not be the end of the issues and that is because some airports are dealing with ground stops because of congestion on the ramps. after changes were made to flight schedules. that is happening in atlanta and a few passengers at sfo tell us there flights were impacted. the faa issued a nationwide pause on all domestic departures until 6:00 our time. this after a computer failure impacting fights around the country. the faa saying it was validating the integrity of flight and safety information.

to make sure your flight was not impacted because we could see a ripple effect from this. live at sfo, gloria rodriguez, abc7news. reggie: thank you. our storm watch coverage, today is a level two on our scale, meaning more rain, more wind, arriving in the bay area as we speak. pg&e is trying to catch up for thousands of customers in the dark. we learned 60,000 customers are without power right now. that's down a bit from last night so good news there. lena howland is live at san jose where people are still trying to clean up. hi, lena. >> this is a serious mass in the willow glen neighborhood. take a look at the aftermath of the storm yesterday. this is the aftermath of a transmission tower nearly 140 feet tall being not down because of strong winds which also took down multiple power poles and powerlines with it, knocking out power to this area. san jose clearly was not alone

with severe storm damage. senators county officials say the price tag of their damage for the past several days could surpass $100 million. governor gavin newsom touring tuesday for an up close look at the extensive damage and he says he has been in touch with president biden who declared a federal emergency declaration in at least 31 california counties. >> these conditions are serious and deadly, which is why it is so important people take care of themselves and use, in closing, common sense, as a relates to what they choose to do over the next coming days on the others to this. lena: thousands across the state are still without power. pg&e says they have more than 5000 personnel ready to get the power restored and they claim this is the biggest response to

any storm in pg&e's history. they also added it would be several days until this tower could be replaced and, at last check on the pg&e outage map, this has caused more than 300 people across this area to be without power and, for them, it may not be restored until after 11:00 tonight. live in san jose, lena howland, abc7news. reggie: two people were rescued from a car crushed by a tree in san francisco. there are power lines on top of the car, at fulton street and 19th avenue. the fire department tweeted photos on the scene and crews say the sunroof was blown out but there was any additional electrical wiring on the driver side. the couple stayed in the car, waited to be rescued, and that may have saved their lives. kumasi: on the peninsula many other places, it has been scary for some people. crews have been responding to downed power lines and trees responding to homes. some of the strongest wind gusts reach 70 miles per hour. as the winds picked up, the

national weather service place multiple cities under a flash flood warning. one man told us in the middle of the night his family thought they only heard the wind and it termed out to be much worse. >> next thing we know it is a drying crash and the whole building shakes. it felt like an earthquake. we could hear glass shattering and water pouring. kumasi: abc 7 walked inside of their home where one of the tree branches were. you can see it through the ceiling into the living room. think no one was hurt. reggie: in the north bay, emergency crews have been addressing flooding entries that came down in the latest round of storms. in novato, abc 7 spoke to a woman that said it was a dramatic start to the morning yesterday. look at this large tree that collapsed in front of her house and crashed into her neighbor's home. >> at 5:00 in the morning or a little after, i heard like a crash. my tree had fallen onto their

garage and damaged their car. reggie: the san rafael board of supervisors ratified a local state of emergency yesterday. officials and residents hope move will give the county more resources to deal with this cleanup. kumasi: thunderstorms are something we rarely have in the bay area, so many of you sent videos and pictures of what it looks like. with the recent systems, we've seen a lot of extreme weather including lightning strikes. heading the transamerica pyramid, sutro tower in san francisco, and the thunder. >> i think, as a california girl, we are used to earthquakes and we are use to the ground. when the rumbling comes from the sky, it catches you off guard. kumasi: strong winds are concern for people everywhere. those winds sent this tree into a unity bus, near union square. a witness people on board were really scared but they were able to get out ok and then the winds

also sent a massive tree onto a car in san jose. you can always track t the abc 7 bay area news app, the latest forecasts and live doppler 7. that bay area ab is available in roku, apple fire tv, fire tv, and android tv. reggie: newly released surveillance video shows a chain reaction crash from thanksgiving caused by a tesla. the san francisco attorney told chp he was driving his 2021 tesla model s self-driving mode when the brakes went out inexplicably. that crash involved eight cars and injured nine people including a two-year-old child. this video was first obtained under the california public records act by the intercept media organization. hours before the crash, tesla's ceo, elon musk, announced the launch of the full self-driving beta version he called a major milestone. kumasi: in the east bay, the

city of oakland did not get a key piece of funding for the howard terminal development. the federal dot rejected oakland's request for more than 182 million dollars of funding for the terminal. a grant money could have been put toward waterfront upgrades regardless of the future plans. this is a critical blow to the terminal development. the d.o.t.'s mega program is supposed to help secure funding for large projects with national benefits that are difficult to fund otherwise. reggie: today, the metropolitan transportation committee will talk about the replacement of the light on the bay bridge. they need to raise $11 million to replace the current lights with new energy-efficient led bulbs. according to the chronicle, the current lights have breakage and are too extensive to maintain. the lights are expected to be removed in march. 's could be installed in september if they can raise the money. the bay area toll authority would continue to pay to

another storm set to hit us over the weekend and the seven-day forecast in nine minutes. let's check in with jobina and see how we are doing with traffic. jobina: we have a new crash reported on the bay bridge so expect delays in this area. there is also a wind advisory for the bridge, it is very slick, and i personally drove over it. the breeze will move your car a bit. we have a commuter alert, a power issue near balboa park. it is weather-related so there will be modified service today and most trains will have one car, except for the end. let's get to the impacts on the santa cruz mountains, power lines down. northbound and southbound nine at granville road are all closed so from belton to santa cruz, that will be shut down. we also have roadway flooding reported on northbound to southbound 121 between silver creek bridge and ca 12, which will be in big bend, essentially in sonoma county. in san francisco, this will be

reggie: president biden is speaking about the discovery of classified documents found at a private office in washington, d.c. last fall. the president says he is surprised the records were there. jobina: president biden spoke about the documents while in mexico for the north american leaders summit. he suggested the documents were brought to his former office
