>> now from abc7, breaking news. >> flood stage hit the fear is a could swamp roads entered parts of the county into an island. good evening. i am ama daetz. dan: i am dan ashley. some roads are already surrounded by river. the fear is it will cut off the peninsula. red x's on the map s that are in danger. something similar happened in 1995. abc news reporter amanda del castillo joins us live. what are you seeing their? amanda:are being wallfind.

if wtaka looike onuthat is o it would be impossible to see the river behind me, especially as it continues to rise. you can imagine the danger for drivers on the roads and residents living nearby. monitoring creeks and the river. fields remained underwater and parts of the county. they encountered this scene over the afternoon. >> i think we'll forget how dangerous this river could be. amanda: a population of 600 plus. authorities are worried about this part of the river. >> concerns are for anyon does not consider the evacuation

warnings. we have concerns for those flood waters reaching areas we are not expecting. amanda: a resident says that her and her family went to stay. >> we we think the house is high enough off the ground. amanda: conditions are constantly changing. >> it depends on where you're at but there are floodwaters within a lot of the fields. it depends on where it is at. amanda: message boards warned drivers of several closures. there was a sizable set up with calfire posting and alert that possible floodwaters could cut off areas with slides impacting highway one near big sur. mpox between the salinas valley

and the peninsula remain a concern. highway one leading into the valley and highway 68. the power of the rising water should not be underestimated. >> it could dip at times and this will not occur at the same time. amanda: officials say that potential for flood activity is expected through 9:00 on sunday. with that, we are only getting a glimpse of the river tonight. we know it is expected to cause quite a mess. live in the county, i am amanda del castillo, abc7 news. dan: this is video from our archives. the salinas river crested and topped 30 feet. major road closures.

numerous communities along the river flooded. ama: our meteorologist, sandhya patel is keeping an eye on this. dan: she is also attracting more rain. sandhya: let's take a look at the river. it is above flood stage which is 23 feet. expect it to rise further tomorrow. the flooding will continue. flood warning is in effect until sunday afternoon. looking at the next incoming storm, it is a moderate strength. we are already seeing the rain in northern california. moisture is getting picked up in the clouds. hour-by-hour, the morning commute will begin with showers. they begin to pick up in intensity for afternoon hours. on our storm impact scale, this is a level two. thunder and flooding chance

tomorrow with gusty wind and dangerous surf expected. i will be back with a closer look at that timeline, coming up. ama: thank you. >> dope. ama: take a look at this. a final spotted off the coast earlier this week. the person who shot it was out with a hike with a friend at the time. since it is overwater, it is a waterspout and they tend to be weaker than tornadoes which move over land. new details tonight unto men found dead inside a home at c ranch. investigators say it appears they died from common monoxide -- carbon monoxide poisoning. the men were found by several workers who were hired to remove a tree. dan:

flood -- mudslide. ama: power outages. we know at least one of the customers is a 49ers tight end. he took to twitter and told pg&e had -- he has not had power for days. new at 11:00, one piece of news to come out of severe weather from the past several weeks. it is making a big dent in the extreme drought. reservoirs are filling up and while things have vastly improved, it is too soon to say the drought is over. our reporter, tim, checked out some of the reservoirs this afternoon and breaks out -- break some of the numbers. tim: the rain has been coming down hard and without some much-needed relief for the drought. >> the exceptional and extreme

drought has completely almost shrunk. tim: most of the state is an moderate or severe stages, big change from where we were months ago. this comes on the heel of encouraging news from the snowpack in the sierra. i sat down with our news meteorologist sandhya patel who says while the numbers are encouraging, we have a while to go. sandhya: it took years to make, we cannot just eliminate it with a few days or months of rain. tim: many areas have seen benefits. this behind me is a reservoir. after nearly two weeks of consistent storms, its water level has risen substantially. is not the only one in the bay area. in east bay and southbay, reservoir levels have risen. all seven of the reservoirs are currently at or near capacity. >>

reservoirs were full was in 2019. it has been a while since we have seen them where they are at. tim: statewide, other reservoirs are still below or at levels. our meteorologist says it will be a while before they are at a key role. sandhya: we have seen this before where we will be drive for months and then we are back to where we were. dan: all the rain has left bay area roads full of potholes and hundreds of unlucky drivers are hitting them. it can be costly but there is something you can do if your car is damaged. ama: we are not the being hit with severe weather. deadly rain in the southeast. dan: next.

in cardiac arrest. her mother put out a statement saying her daughter had been rushed to the hospital. lisa marie presley was also a singer and songwriter. she is survived by her three children. at least 70 were dead after a tornado ripped through the southeast. you can see some of the damage left in the wake. six were killed in alabama and another person died after a tree fell on top of a car during a severe storm in georgia. >> a tornado. a tornado in selma. this is to the east. looking back coming at the west. dan: rescue efforts are continuing as the search for survivors continues. ama: back on the portion is closed after a sinkhole opened. the highway is closed and the westbound direction through the

creek road. the road was closed wednesday after a 12 inch dip was on the verge of collapsing. it is unclear when it will open. chp is advising nearby residents use alternate routes. the wet weather has caused massive pothole problems across the roadways in just about every city and county. tonight, we spoke with caltrans and residents who are now having to dish out hundreds of dollars to fix thears. abc7news reporter j.r. stone following the story. want to see when you get out of the card >> i saw it when i got out. j.r: she saw it in route.

>> i heard a pop. the pothole was big. j.r: she made it home but you can see that was not the case for these individuals. more than two dozen drivers hit that same pothole near san jose avenue and mission street. caltrans tells us there are working 12 hour shifts to meet the demand. the county received of potholes in the entire month of january. in the first 12 days of 2023, caltrans has received 300 91 reports of potholes and more rain is on the way. >> we are doing the best can to make sure that the transportation system is operating safely. j.r: when we spoke with carrie, she was at the repair shop getting a new tire.

down to moderate for most of the bay area. is making a difference. on our storm impact scale, this is a level two. it will be gusty with some dangerous surf coming our way. a strong storm with heavy rain at times. potential for wind damage as we look at the view. certainly getting windy out there in the hills. 27 in the north. a wind advisory until tomorrow, covering almost the entire bay area. it could not down tree limbs and cause outages. the wind and the storm is kicking up the surf. wave heights around 16 feet-20. expect 25 foot dangerous breakers. they could be as high as 30 feet.

any rain falling on top of this ground could cause more flooding. a flood warning in effect until monday for the entire bay area. a flood warning by the river expected to exceed flood stage. keep an eye on that river if you are nearby. 50's and 60's under temperatures. the highs are in the los to upper 60's. you will notice through during the commute. there could be pockets of moderate showers carrying on into the evening before the next storm arrives. this is saturday morning. widespread rain with downpours around 10:00 a.m.. it will wind down quickly. in terms of rainfall totals for tomorrow and saturday, most of you will end up in the 1-2 inch category.

the hills will pick up three inches or more. winter storm warning tomorrow afternoon until 10:00 p.m. monday. 3-6 of snow. it will be tough to get up there. 40's and 50's with the temperatures in the morning. do not need -- do not leave home without your umbrella. 50's and 60's with gusty wind. when the 49ers take on the seahawks, it is looking like showers. the heaviest should be out of there with that picking up later in the afternoon. a level two tomorrow, at th on saturday with scattered showers on sunday. and then, we dry out. ama:
