we begin tonight with the sudden death of lisa marie presley. she was part of american music royalty, the child of one of the most celebrated singers in history, elvis presley. she was born in the spotlight and remained there much of her life, through many highs and a number of lows. lisa marie presley, the only her mother, priscilla, confirming the news. "it is with a heavy heart that i must share the devastating news that my beautiful daughter, lisa marie, has left us." she was rushed to the hospital earlier today after possibly going into cardiac arrest in a los angeles home, accordng to tmz. she was last seen publicly days ago with her mother at the golden globes awards. >> tonight will be a wonderful night for elvis. >> yes, i hope so. >> reporter: lisa marie presley was born in memphis, tennessee in 1968. her parents divorced when she was 4. she was 9 years old when her

family again in 2020 when lisa marie's 27-year-old son, benjamin keough, died by suicide. the latest movie about her father, elvis, won best actor at the golden globes tuesday. austin butler in that role thanking the family in his acceptance speech. >> thank you for opening your hearts, your memories, your home to me. lisa marie, priscilla, i love you forever. >> reporter: abc's chris connelly sitting dune with presley last year ahead of the film's release. lisa marie saying butler was the only person ever to accurately depict her father on screen. >> it's almost as if he channeled him. he puts everything he has, his heart, soul, everything he had, into researching it, reading, watching, learning. he honored him in every way possible. >> reporter: her father's rebellious streak something, she says, she inherited. >> i think it's -- it's in the bloodline.

♪ >> the wild card factor is alive and well in this family, i think, alive and well in me. yes. to the point where my own children are like, "mom, stop, stop, what are you doing? don't say that, you can't say that, you can't do that." >> reporter: her mother, priscilla, saying tonight, "she was the most passionate, strong, and loving woman i have ever known." joining me now is chris connelly. you've covered entertinment for a long time. you know that beat better than any reporter i know. you interviewed lisa marie this past summer at graceland. first, just your reaction to her death? >> i almost can't imagine the words that lisa marie presley is dead. i remember her really like from the moment she was born. she's been a part of american life since the day she was born, in 1968.

almost like american pop royalty, you know, like someone like caroline kennedy, almost, in terms of the way people felt about her and wished the best for her. coming into a life that was enormously challenging as the daughter of the king of rock 'n' roll. and so that this life would end so suddenly after a time when i think she felt some great joy, after a period of deep personal tragedy, is heartbreaking. >> i loved how you phrased that. this daughter of american music royalty. as you said, she lived such a public life with the ups and downs, the suicide death of her son in 2020. and then it seemed that the elvis family was enjoying a renaissance of sorts with the success of the movie. how did she weather those ups and downs over the years of her very public life, do you think? >> well, i think it was challenging. it would have been for anyone in her position. and i think it was challenging for her. i spoke to linda thompson once for "nightline" who was

affiliated closely with elvis for a number of years and she recalled receiving a phone call from 9-year-old lisa marie on the day elvis died saying, "my daddy died, my daddyd you can i must have been like for a young person. and so i would say that lisa marie stayed out of the spotlight a fair amount. we didn't see or hear that much from her. and then we began to hear more about her as her personal life became a bigger topic of conversation. she got married and had children, and she had some high-profile relationships, certainly. but in the last couple of years, we talked about her kind of carrying the mantle of elvis presley. it was really important to her that this new film "elvis" respect elvis' death, the elvis knew he owed to black music. in conversations with baz luhrmann, its director, she insisted on that as a key part of elvis' legacy, that he was fully aware of the debt he owed to the black music he'd grown up

♪ the scene was painfully familiar. a student opening fire in a classroom, allegedly shooting his teacher as she heroically came to the aid of her students, getting them out safely. what rocked the newport news, virginia, community and stunned america is the suspect is 6 years old. newport news, virginia, a navy town where men and women have turned steel and metal into u.s. navy ships and submarines since the 1800s. it's also home to one of the latest and most baffling school

shootings most can remember. >> female victim, she's been shot in the abdomen as well as through and through of the hands. >> this is an unprecedented situation we're dealing with. a 6-year-old. it is unprecedented. this shooting was not accidental. it was intentional. >> reporter: at richneck elementary school on a friday afternoon just before 2:00 p.m., a 6-year-old student allegedly shot and wounded his teacher in their classroom. >> there was no altercation, there was no struggle whatsoever between miss zwerner and this child. she was, in fact, giving instruction, talking. >> reporter: a typical school day that turned out to be anything but. police say the first grader brought his mother's legally purchased 9-millimeter handgun in his backpack, firing one round at his 25-year-older, abigail zwerner. she was instructing the class. >> she raised her hand to deflect it. kind of in a defensive-type posture. the round went into her hand and

then out the back of her hand, then into her chest. >> reporter: despite life-threatening injuries, zwerner evacuated the other students from the classroom. >> her actions that afternoon, last friday, were some of the most heroic things i've ever seen. that teacher, that young lady, stopped, got those kids out of that room, while she had suffered a gunshot wound. >> reporter: the teacher then stumbled into the school's main office, where lawanda sample rusk was picking up her grandchildren. >> she said," call 911, i've been shot." so she ended up sitting down on the floor. she just sat there. then she passed out. >> reporter: the incident left parents stunned. >> it's just really hard to process that this happened to us. i never in a million years thought i would be telling a story about the day i didn't know if my son was shot at school. he said to me on our walk out, "i don't want to come back here, i never want to come back here."

>> as soon as i learned that we had a 6-year-old, i kind of took a step back and i asked, wait, how old -- how old is our suspect? >> reporter: even police chief steve drew, who's been in law enforcement for nearly three decades, was rattled. >> we interviewed the child and his mother, and through that we were able to determine that firearm was taken from the house and put into a book bag. it was brought to school. it was taken out of a book bag and concealed on his person. and after recess, it was pointed and fired. >> reporter: for now, there are more questions than answers. and across the country, different states have different laws when it comes to gun storage. in virginia, leaving a loaded gun where a child under 14 years old can get to it is a crime. but in a puzzling paradox, it has no law requiring guns to be safely locked in homes. >> we will determine through the facts we have, the evidence we're able to lay before him, what the law is that will either support or not support any additional charges or an arrest

or charges against the parents. >> reporter: police still don't know whether the parent of the child will face repercussions in virginia, but in other cases parents have been held accountable for their children's actions. >> three students killed, at least eight others injured, including a teacher. an alleged lone gunman, a 15-year-old student, is in custody at this hour. >> reporter: in 2021, 15-year-old ethan crumbley opened fire inside his michigan high school, killing four, injuring seven. he pled guilty last october and could now face life in prison. but it's not the only one potentially facing jail time. >> today i'm announcing charges against the shooter's parents, jennifer and james crumbley. >> reporter: his parents have been charged with four counts of involuntary manslaughter. both have pled not guilty. defense attorneys for the filing last may, "the crumbleys did not counsel ethan in the commission of the school shooting or act jointly with

ethan in any way. to the contrary, they had no knowledge their son intended to commit multiple homicides." >> since the oxford tragedy, i have spent almost all of my time, both at work and not at work, dedicated to finding out how something like this could happen. >> reporter: karen mcdonnell is one of the prosecutors in the crumbley case and a former teacher and mother of five. >> we just aren't doing enough. and i don't mean as a prosecutor. and i don't even mean as law enforcement. i mean as a community, as a society, we are not doing enough. >> reporter: prosecutors can't comment on specifics of the case because of a gag order, but in court documents, it states the crumbleys' "gross negligence" allowed their son access to the murder weapon. >> in essence, the prosecutors in the ethan crumbley case have said the parents should have known that he was on a dangerous parents, they had an obligation to do something. >> it's our obligation as law

enforcement officials to go where the facts lead us. charging parents for a -- you know, an act committed by a child with a gun should be ttrre should be reserved for very extreme cases. >> reporter: one of these extreme cases is now playing out in highland park, illinois. on july 4th, 2022, robert creamo iii, age 21, allegedly opened fire on an independence day parade, killing seven people, injuring more than 30. soon after, he was charged with 21 counts of murder, three for each of the deceased victims. but robert creamo iii pleading not guilty is not the only one facing criminal charges. prosecutors are holding his father accountable, robert creamo jr., alleging he should have seen the red flags in his son's behavior before sponsoring his application to have a gun

license in 2019. >> you tell people to be responsible with their decisions when it comes to operating their cars, we tell people to be responsible with the decisions they make in all facets of life. and if you are signing an application that says that "my son or daughter can have to weapons" then you will be held responsible if that decision is reckless. >> reporter: creamo jr.'s defense attorney put out a statement describing the charges as baseless and unprecedented, writing, "the decision should alarm every single parent in the united states of america who, according to the lake county state attorney's office, knows exactly what's going on with their 19-year-old adult children and can be held criminally liable for actions taken nearly three years later." >> there are situations where a parent should be held accountable. this just is not one of them. >> reporter: steve greenburg, a highland park attorney

intimately familiar with the case, also maintains the father is in no way responsible for his son's alleged crimes. >> so in your view, has the u.s. justice system gotten too mired in the court of public opinion? >> we have become a society of blame. people have this theory, this belief, which i don't subscribe to, that if we blame somebody, it brings closure to the situation. >> reporter: >> reporter: but even a shred of closure can be fleeting, especially in the face of unimaginable loss. ten years ago, nicole hockley's 6-year-old son, dylan, was one of the 20 children killed in the sandy hook elementary school massacre in connecticut. she's cofounder of "sandy hook promise," a nonprofit that advocates for gun law reform and gun safety education. >> there have been so many mass shootings since that awful day.

does that discourage you? does it give you more focus? >> the day a mass shooting happens, i am devastated. because i know these acts are preventible. so i often feel, we didn't get there in time, there's more we could have done. it's not discouraging, it's unfathomable that we're allowing this to keep happen. >> reporter: she believes in many cases parents should be held responsible. >> critics say this is an effort to criminalize bad parenting. you do you see it? >> i don't see it as criminalizing bad parenting. this isn't, you stole a cupcake from the local bakery. this is around, you killed other people. i think it's enforcing accountability and responsibility. >> reporter: as for the school shooting in newport news, virginia, the priorities now, the teacher's health, a child's well-being, and what, if anything, law enforcement will anything, law enforcement will do about it.
