person in custody. but i'm still locking my bedroom door. >> reporter: but the fear that has gripped this college town is still with them after a horrific crime that left the community terrified. >> this is a story that has captivated the nation. >> reporter: on november 13th, police were dispatched to this off-campus home. there they find four college students murdered. >> the four were stabbed with a knife, but no weapon has been located at this time. >> no one could understand, why would anyone want to kill these four students? >> reporter: tonight, the story of those young victims from the ones who knew them best. >> just the worst news you could ever possibly imagine. you know, i just kind of went numb for about 30 minutes. >> we were texting kaylee. seeing if she was okay.

she obviously didn't ever respond. >> reporter: and the six-week-long hunt for the suspect. >> locals whispering, maybe it will go cold, maybe they'll never find the person or the people who did this. >> reporter: and new details about the man accused of the murders. >> hi, my name's bryan, would you be able to give me a haircut tomorrow by any chance? >> it's crazy to find out, i interacted with this person, i touched this person's hair, i made this person look and feel good about themselves. >> reporter: kaylee gonsalves, manny mogen, xana kernodle and their roommates had a tight bond. boyfriend ethan chapin was often at the house with them. >> these girls posted their whole lives to social media. in those videos you can see how much they love each other. ♪

>> kaylee is the definition of sunshine. >> to know kaylee was to love kaylee. >> reporter: kaylee and maddie had been best friends since sixth grade. >> they did everything together. first dates, first boyfriends, graduated high school. >> they had their first heartbreaks together. kaylee was 12, 13 years old. they're blasting taylor swift in the basement. you know, comforting each other. >> if i have one or two words to describe maddie may, it would be just -- an angel. she just made me proud. >> reporter: xana kernodle was in the same sorority as maddie, dating ethan, a freshman and a triplet whose siblings attend the same university. >> first impression of ethan, this huge dude you wouldn't really approach. as soon as you got to know him, you realize he's one big teddy

bear. >> reporter: 2:00 a.m., four students and roommates are back home, settling in after a night out on the town. >> everything was so normal in that home on king road. nobody could have imagined it was about to become a house of horror. >> reporter: just before noon on sunday, police receive a 911 call. >> three police cars went screaming up the street with lights and sirens. they never use lights and sirens, what the hell is going on now? >> when the lead sergeant goes into the house, he later told people how the high smell of blood rose up in his nostrils, and it took him back. >> this is a brutal crime scene. these victims were not shot, they were stabbed to death. >> unfortunately, one of the victims is my very best friend. that there had been a homicide - on campus on king road, i called

her three times, she didn't answer. i texted her four times, she didn't answer. >> reporter: after the murders, weeks went by with no arrests. >> we ask anyone with any information related to what happened, to get that information to us. even if you don't believe it is relevant. >> now the chief has asked for help. so there's a gas station not far from the house where the murders took place. and one of the attendants at the gas station takes it upon herself to start reviewing old videos. she finds just at the time that the murders possibly occurred, she finds a white car zipping down the road. and she sends this in to the police. >> reporter: on december 7th, police announce they're looking for a white hyundai elantra. >> the entire community of moscow, idaho, has been holding its collective breath, waiting for some answers or some resolution. >> just before new year's eve,

the police have finally broken their silence. there's news, and it's big. >> the big story tonight is a major break in the murder of four idaho college students. >> the arrest of a 28-year-old man in connection with the brutal murders of four university of idaho students. >> reporter: the suspect, 28-year-old bryan kohberger, ph.d. student in criminology at washington state university just ten miles from moscow. >> what police were keeping from the public is november 29th, a washington state university officer had discovered the white elantra parked in a student apartment parking lot. >> reporter: several weeks after the murders, kohberger drove cross-country with his father for the winter break. >> on december 13th, the vehicle they were driving was captured by a license plate reader in loma, colorado. two days later, in indiana, police body camera footage shows

bryan kohberger being pulled over for following too close to another vehicle. >> hello, how y'all doing today? good, good. take a look at your driver's license real quick if i could? >> reporter: once kohberger is back in pennsylvania, state police are keeping him under surveillance. they're watching everything he does. they're creating a picture that this could be our suspect. >> at about 2:00 a.m. on december 30th, 2,500 miles away from the scene of the murder, s.w.a.t. teams are breaking into a house in eastern pennsylvania to make an arrest. >> reporter: he was then extradited to idaho to face murder charges. >> state of idaho versus bryan c. kohberger -- >> i think it's important to understand, he's presumed innocent till proven otherwise. >> there's been a lot of talk about him studying criminology. but if he's the guy and the authorities are right, he wasn't actually a very good criminal at

all. >> reporter: authorities in idaho unsealed an explosive 18-page affidavit laying out the evidence used to arrest kohberger, including cell phone data showing his cell phone in the area. a description from the victim's roommate who authorities claim came face-to-face with him. the dna left at the scene. >> the affidavit essentially lays out what we call critical mass, where eventually all of the clues start stacking up. the video surveillance cameras. the cell phone pings. the physical description. all of it starts to come together. >> reporter: according to the affidavit, kohberger's dna was found on a military-style knife sheath left at the scene. >> it's incredibly significant that police find the sheath, a cover to a knife in the bed next to maddie. >> reporter: police linking the dna to kohberger by collecting his father's dna from trash outside the family's home. >> once they get bryan in

custody, they do the cheek swab taken directly from the primary suspect, and that definitively tells the police they've got their guy. >> reporter: bryan kohberger, who's not entered a plea, remains in jail without bail. his preliminary hearing is expected to begin in the last week of june. >> the real question for me is going to be, what's his defense? >> bryan specifically said he's eager to be exonerated, implicitly meaning that he's innocent of the crime. after reading the affidavit and probable cause, i do believe there are obviously holes in the prosecution case at this time. >> if it's not bryan kohberger, who is it? >> reporter: in a statement, kohberger's family saying, first and foremost, we care deeply for the four families who have lost their precious children. we will continue to let the legal process unfold. and as a family, we will love and support our son and brother. resolution in this case is likely years away. for now, so many questions still remain.

covid, kind of where we are up until, you know, six months ago, i think. and falling in love. it's about falling in love, renewing my faith in men when i was in a period in my life where i just thought all men are just not -- are idiots. >> oh, thank you. >> well, yeah, no offense. yeah, falling in love. and then also having that relationship end and remaining open-hearted and open-minded is a revolution for me. because i was never really thinking that i was that kind of relationship type. i'm pretty independent. to find out that i'm open to that was a big, nice surprise. >> you smile when you say that. i can see the smile in your eyes. >> thinking about all the love there is out in the world. >> we're going to take a look at a clip and talk to the back side of it. >> okay. >> but after the last two and a half, three years of watching everybody stuck inside their houses with their spouses? shouldn't go, especially after the chris rock/will smith incident at the oscars. how do you walk that fine line? >> i think this night is about really keeping the energy and the high vibes up. i've been to therapy, so i'm not going after people. people are safer now with me around. so -- but i think there's a lot of people complaining about what you can and can't say. this kind of culture that we're in. i just don't think that's a reasonable argument. i feel like putting parameters in place so that you're less discriminatory -- basically, you can't be sexist, you can't be racist. that's not such a tall order. if you can't figure out jokes that work around that, maybe you have to become a little bit more clever. >> you're filling in at "the daily show" for recently departed host trevor noah. what is it about hosting a daily comedy show that appeals to you? >> i love the news, i love pop culture, i love being able to combine the two and take it in and regurgitate it back out. i like social commentary. i like acting and reacting to what's happening in our politics, in our pop culture,

human interest stories, all of it. >> would you want the job permanently, full-time? >> i will be open to discussing that after i host my week, see how much i love being there, you know what i mean? it's new york city, i live in l.a., so i've got to have a great experience. if i have a great experience, i'm sure we'll have further conversations. >> that was spoken like a -- that's the diplomatic, professional answer. >> i'm just the master of diplomacy, right here. that's what everyone knows me for. >> all right, so what's next for you? >> what's next? i think i'm going to go back out on tour, because i've really fallen in love withstandup again. i took a six-year break before "evolution." i'm hosting the critics' choice, hosting "the daily show" february 6th. i think you'll be seeing a lot of me. i'm in the mood to work. this year will be the year to do that. >> this is a question i don't think i've asked an entertainer. i'll ask it of you. what is the one thing in life you know for sure for which you
