this system off the northern coast of california. those rain rates are moving through. as we check out the storm report, we have some rain falling through south bay. they're showing heavy rain through scotts valley and there is the debris slide south of state route 17 at divine hill. .4 inches right now. some of the heaviest precipitation's, .56 inches per hour. that is the orange, this is moving towards daly city. it will be there around 5:16, in san francisco around 5:24. storm level 3 three on our impact scale. expected downpours and flooding, dangerous surf, even a chance of thunder. gusty winds and wind damage. a live shot in san jose shows difficult conditions outside and

the winds are picking up from the south dusting to 32 miles per hour in half moon bay. we have numerous watches and advisories out there. there is a flood watch in effect until monday and there is flooding possible in the bay area. strong winds with gusts up to 50 miles per hour. the grounds are already saturated so we could see more down to trees and power outages. we will be keeping track of this all day. liz: thank you. north bay has been getting soaked and the rain is -- is resulting in multiple mudslides. someone in fairfax. tim johns was in marin county where they are preparing for what could be a rough weekend. reporter: the destruction from

the storms continued on. a building crashed from -- displacing in that residence with their pets. >> i got woken up by a loud knock on the door. it was the fire department saying the whole hill was coming down. reporter: another slide happened in lagunita's where one family was left to clean up the mess in their backyard. while freddy was a busy day, fire officials, they are gearing up for what is to come this weekend. at the fire station in woodacre -- >> this is one of the teams we will have. reporter: he and his team are getting ready for the coming days. we will see trees down -- >> we will see trees down, power lines down, people will be without power. it comes down to where the storm impact the bay area. reporter: there will be several teams on standby ready to

respond within a moment's notice. >> we have had multiple deployments of our flood watch team. reporter: he says he thinks everyone is ready for a little break. >> i think we are ready for the sun to come out and things to try out. reporter: tim johns, abc7news. liz: on the peninsula, a sinkhole is causing headaches for thousands of people along the san mateo county coast. part of highway 92 is a shutdown from highway 35 through main street and half moon bay. he could take an hour for people to reach the nearest hospital. >> if there are multiple patients or transports needed, we either have to rely on helicopters or wait longer periods of time foreground evidences. liz: san mateo county says life flight will remain on

liz: which will open late because of the storm coming in. this will give staff time to walk through the park to make sure it is safe to open. the park may open later or close earlier today. the salinas river crested yesterday after hitting flood stage thursday night. there were fears of the flooding could cut off the monterey peninsula and turn it into an island. that has not happened. neighboring and south of sanders polk county -- thousands of gallons of sewage were released into the river. the sewage had been treated before overflowing into the river. a lot of concerns up and down the state. right now, it is raining in parts of the bay. francis: we have a line of strong to moderate rain moving north to south and hitting the north bay. there is a live look. flooding is possible and i will let you know how much rain you

contra costa county's roller rink is closed after damage. the owner set the building had six inches of water surrounding it. they say it will take a while to replace the maplewood floor. repairs will cost up to 4 -- up to $400,000. he is hoping there will be federal or state relief funds. as we continue to go back storm coverage, cleanup and repairs continue after the region was hit with mass power outages. officials are preparing for the next round of storms and making sure the public is ready. an emergency order has been extended to provide necessary resources. john furner lola fresh the county -- they county chair says some homes are within the fema special area. the circumstances are challenging they are ready for the worst. >> crews are working around the

clock to remove debris and blockages from those portions of creeks and streams. liz: county shelters will be open throughout san jose and other parts of santa clara county in case other evacuations are necessary. as officials hope for the best, they point out this situation is very dynamic. in the last few weeks we have seen it numerous rescues across the peop inars,lu pena spoke to a fe battalion chief about what you should do and not do if you are in a car surrounded by water. reporter: it is a rescue that reflects the dangers of floodwaters. >> you can see how fast that water is moving. reporter: oakland fire crews and several other agencies stage two adults from being submerged along with their vehicle in

hollister. >> people don't realize how deep water is and how strong and powerful water is. it doesn't take much to have the water go over your wheel well and the amount of pressure from these flows. reporter: with more rain, more incidents of people being trapped in these conditions. on wednesday in sonoma county, a 43-year-old woman was found dead submerged in her vehicle. authorities are still searching for a five-year-old boy. his mom says they were on their way to school when their car got swept away by floodwaters. james byron says the number one tip is to not drive through water. >> activate 911 right away, know where your location is, always have a good sense of what road you are on. what are you closest to? reporter: 't see the yellow or white finds, is not a good idea to drive through standing water.

that is the snow in the higher elevations. check out the orange probably between south san francisco and san francisco. this is a precipitation rate of one point into one inches. you can expect this -- 1.81 inches. you can expect this to move faster. on our storm impact scale is a three out of five. expect downpours, flooding, dangerous serve. there is also a chance of thunder and gusty winds with the damage expected. winds are gusting anywhere between 10 to 33 miles per hour and they will pick up in the next couple of hours. a flood watch in effect for the entire bay area through monday afternoon at 4:00. there is a wind advisory for almost the entire bay area with gusts up to 15 miles per hour. i am expecting more trees down

and more power outages. a high surf warning until 10:00 this morning. be careful if you are near the coastline. we could see breakers up to even 30 feet. this is life-threatening conditions at the beaches and a coastal flood advisory through monday morning. minor coastal flooding is expected. here is a forecast animation. the next couple of hours are going to the toughest. some very heavy rain all throughout the bay area. then some downpours through the north bay. you can see the pockets of red around 7:00. 8:00, still very heavy. 9:00, this is a fast-moving level through system. by this afternoon, it turns into scattered showers. rainfall amounts are heavy, ranging anywhere from half an inch to 1.5 inches. we will get .75 inches -- .25

liz: here is a live look outside right now. raining here in san francisco. raining in so much of the bay area. please drive safe. the heavy rain has had its impact on our public schools. many of the buildings have had flooding and leaks. in san francisco, mcgill quelled is the very custodian making sure the lakes -- he discovered another leak in the school cafeteria. >> when i started coming this way, inside that room, all along the wall. >> we have been trying to stay on top of the problems and taking preventative action as far as putting setbacks, buckets to continue water coming in. liz: many districts have been

facing similar problems with custodians working overtime and getting creative. when this classroom was the custodian dug a ditch outside to force the standing water back into the ground. thousands of californians have damage to their homes or businesses and they need repairs. contractors may be overwhelmed and fraudsters may be looking. michael finney is here with advice. >> we have two to three feet of water in the garage. reporter: for homeowners, weeding out the storm is just the beginning. >> when a tree falls on someone's house, my heart goes out to that homeowner and i hope they get a good contractor. reporter: the next challenge, how to fix major damage to your homes. >> to research and avoid rushing into repairs. reporter: contractors licensing

board says many folks may be so eager to fix the damage and they could fall into a trap. >> get at least three bids and avoid hiring the first contractor who comes along, especially if they are going door to door. reporter: predators target victims in disaster zones, going door to door offering us with repairs. some may be legit, some may be a licensed or unscrupulous. >> they say i have left over materials from a job i just did, do you want me to fix your driveway? they do a shoddy job. reporter: if they don't have a name on their truck, your eyebrows need to go up. chasing them down is a very scary place. reporter: consumer advocates say find a licensed contractor for the tap of job you need. the cslb those in your area. get contract terms in writing

moving forward, finding solutions, this is abc 7 news. liz: now at 5:3 battering the bay area. we are making up to a level three on our storm impact scale. how people are preparing and when to expect a break in the rain. we have team coverage this morning, starting with meteorologist fr look at what is going on outside. frances: we have downpours moving through the bay area. laptop the seven. you see the areas of orange and red, that is where we had heavy rain moving to the north bay and clearlake and the pink and white is snow falling in higher elevations. here is heavy rain moving through the east bay toward berkeley and oakland. that point area is a precipitation rate of .65 inches per hour and it is moving to the east bay. here is a live shot of the san rafael bridge.

he get a better look at what this looks like right now. if you can stay home, that would be your best option. on our impact scale, level 3 strong storm, downpours and flooded especially -- expected. inches of thunder with christie -- gusty winds and more power outages. the strongest gust is in the half moon bay, 33 miles per hour. that will pick up in the next couple of hours. temperatures are generally added to mid 50's and we are not going to climb a much higher. we will be in the upper this afternoon. with all of this rain and flood watch in effect all the way through monday, flooding is possible for the entire bay area and a wind advisory in effect this morning with gusts up to 50 miles per hour. we have set really grants heavy downpours coming in the next few hours and strong winds picking up.

we will be keeping an eye on all the storm reports where we can see more downed trees and power outages. liz: the rain is battering the peninsula. people are bracing for a morning of heavy rain and strong winds. gloria rodriguez is live in pacifica right now and that is where authorities are telling people to stay away from the water and the roads if they can. gloria, thank you for braving this rain for us. how are you doing out there? gloria: is really windy out here. the waves here are expected to get to 20 to 25 feet tall. there's also a high surf warning in effect until 10:00. that means no going in the water today. no swimming, no surfing because of life-threatening conditions. a lot of people out here on the san mateo coast have been

impacted by these storms. there has been flooding and in some areas, downed trees. highway 92, the man wrote in and out of half moon bay and the coastal communities is closed indefinitely. a sinkhole forming two days ago and shut down a portion of 92. this has some worried about impacts and 911 response times along the coast side regions. >> it could take as long as three hours. this is a dire situation. >> if transport is needed, you're looking at double triple the amount of time a patient could receive care. gloria: many residents have los power. residents have been on next door saying some people are without internet after several days.

i was out here a few days last week and chatted with residents who said they experienced flooding so they undoubtedly are on alert because of this storm. live in pacifica, gloria rodriguez, abc7 news. liz: we will check in with you next half hour. in the south bay, there are evacuation warnings for santa clara county. some include hebrew basin and highway 101 near balsa road. heavy raining, flooding, high winds andy dickerson storms are expected. evacuation warnings are not orders. people are not required to leave but they should be ready. in santa clara county, part of my throat has collapsed near del potro and senatorial valley. for those who live in the area, this is a vital route to get to the valley and interstate 80 4i-5.

in the sierra, trucks are being turned around on i-80 due to multiple spinouts over donner summit. caltrans says all other traffic is being held at nyack and is unknown when the highway will reopen. travel is not advised as winter conditions pickup. drivers can expect icy roads, chain controls, and delays. >> it is not a joke to be cruising around. everybody who comes up in their two wheeled tribes sliding all over the road, you have to know what you are doing in the snow. liz: if you mus your gas tank, bring extra food, clothes, and water. this is what one woman saw during her tribe on thursday. there are walls of snow along the work -- lining the road was. you can always check the rain, wind, and flooding forecast on

breakfast is served. some of us go out and brave the elements. others stay here. lunch is served at noon. reporter: he is one of 20 people who utilized the services of christ episcopal church. normally the church is open three nights a week for people to get off the street. due to the rain, church officials extended their hours to help people. >> it is hard. tents that are now sitting in standing water and leaking and people are getting literally flooded out. it is miserable. reporter: the pastor says they have had to rely heavily on volunteers to put in more work to. meet the increased need they have to -- they also had to utilize emergency funds to pay for food and resources. it is money they are happy to use. >> it has been painful to see so
