are expected right now. how people are preparing for more rain and the recovery in some of the hardest hit cities. good morning, it is saturday, january 14. i'm liz kreutz. thank you for joining us. as this morning's storm moves in, we have team coverage for you. report your gloria rodriguez is live in pacifica where flood and wind advisories are in effect but first let's get to meteorologist francis and the weather center. francis: good morning. the heaviest rain is moving through and we have downpours, you can see here with live doppler 7, looping over the past few hours. this will stick around through the morning and check out how the heaviest rain is moving through the areas in orange and red and also even yellow. those are the downpours. as we zoom in, you will notice near the san mateo bridge the precipitation rate has decreased, .32 inches right now. this heavy rain is starting to move through the east bay and will hit union city in about

6:04 in the next five minutes and pleasanton at 6:30. a live shot on the san mateo bridge shows how difficult driving will be, so if you can stay home, that is your best bet. here's a live shot of 880 near the coliseum. it is a storm level 3 on our exclusive storm impact scale. this strong storm with downpours will cause flooding. we will see gusty winds up to 50 miles an hour, thunderstorms are possible during the morning hours and evening in the afternoon. it is about a 10% to 20% chance and dangerous surf expected with warnings in place. and a flood watch in place through monday afternoon. flooding is possible for the entire bay area. the gusts will reach up to 50 miles per hour this morning so be extra careful if you are driving and to look out for some spots. now we have more wet weather in the accuweather 7-day forecast but we also have some dry days to look forward to coming up ahead. liz: thank you.

happening now, the rain is pounding the peninsula. people are bracing for a morning of heavy rain and strong wind. gloria rodriguez is live for us in pacifica as flood, wind, and surf advisories are in place. good morning. gloria: good morning. it is very windy out here, rainy as well. the waves are intense, 20 to 25 feet tall. they have issued a high surf warning here meaning no going in the water, no swimming, no surfing, because of life-threatening conditions. along the peninsula, a massive sinkhole is causing a major headache for thousands of residents living along the san mateo county coast. part of highway 92 was shut down from highway 35 to main street in half moon bay. the san mateo coast was affected

with flooding and downed trees by community members are coming together to help each other. today, hundreds of meals will be given away to people affected by the floods along the san mateo co. site -- coast site. world central kitchen nonprofit is passing out meals to farmworkers and residents whose mobile home were flooded. >> it has been such a hard time for us here. we've seen so many suffering because flood came into their homes, especially in our farm immunity. appliances have been displaced, are not working, they can't cook, we lost electricity. there are so many in hotels and across the area in flooded areas that we gotta get food to them, warm food is making a difference. >> and blankets to storm victims for the past few days and will continue that today as well. i have spent time in pacifica last week as well and some

residents here, down the street from where we are, say they got flooded so they are undoubtedly on edge because of today's storm. gloria rodriguez, abc7news. liz: thank you for that update. we will check in with you soon. in the north bay, nor with will open at 10 a clock and because of the storm. this will give staff time to walk through park to make sure it is open. the park may open later in the day depending on the weather. the north bay is getting soaked and the rain is seeing multiple mudslides. two force people to evacuate from their apartment buildings. tim johns was on a marin county where they are preparing for what could be a -- a rough weekend ahead. tim: the destruction from the parade of storms heading the bay area continued friday at this building in fairfax, in mudslides crashed in from an adjacent hill, displacing 19 residents along with pets. >> i was woken

by a loud knock on the door, it was the fire department saying the whole hill was coming down. tim: another slide happened down the road where one family was left to clean up the mess in their backyard. while friday was a busy day for first responders around the county here, fire officials tell me they are gearing up for what is to come this weekend. >> at the marin county fire station in woodacre -- >>'s is one of the teams we will have on a pre-position tonight. tim: the battalion chief showed us some of the rescue equipment t and his team are getting ready for the coming days. >> we will see trees down, power lines down, people will be without power. i think it comes down to where the storm impacts the bay area. tim: he tells me there will be several teams on standby ready to respond within a moment's notice. >> we have had multiple deployment of our urban search and rescue team and water team in preparation for the storm events. tim: he says he thinks everyone is ready for a little break.

>> i think we are ready for the sun to come out and things to dry out a little bit. tim: in marin county, tim johns, abc7news. liz: on the peninsula, a sinkhole is causing headaches for thousands of people along the san mateo county coast. part of highway 92 is a shutdown from highway 35 through main street and half moon bay. as storms pose a threat, it could take an hour for people to reach the nearest hospital. >> if there are multiple patients or transports needed, we either have to rely on helicopters to bring patients out or they are going to have to wait longer periods of time foreground evidences. liz: san mateo county says life flight will remain on standby. but they will deploy with first responders. cruise produced a stretch of highway one to a single lane. the southbound lane started to buckle south of pescadero road and parts of the highway dropped as low as three feet, making it

extremely dangerous for drivers. now to santa cruz county where the focus is on recovery and opening of businesses. many in the hardest hit coastal towns or asking visitors to come shop and support if they can. -- support. amanda del castillo he has the story from cap attila village. ♪ amanda: lyrics village hope soon ring true. while fewer were in town friday night, this was a welcome sight after recent storms tore through oceanside businesses and left others in the dark. >> it feels like whiplash. [laughter] feels like you can't catch your breath. amanda: the owner kathy bentley, , describing weeks of that -- of bad weather after the pandemic. she is raising money for the santa cruz disaster fund and has established a home for those who relied on businesses who were hardest hit. >> this is going to make me cry. a lot of the musicians that play

here play over there, so i feel a sense of responsibility to help and provide a venue where people can come. amanda: the overall goal, get people to come. many feel there was a misconception the villages was shut down after seeing waterfront properties with severe damage. this posted sign reads loud and clear, cap attila village is open. >> we had a meeting with business owners and that was touching to touch base and make sure everyone is ok and where do we go from here. >> as a business owner, you don't see this too often. a lot of times you might be an covert or very spread out. this village is tightknit. we are all friends here and it is incredible the relationships we build here. amanda: friday, they grabbed a mic and karaoke machine making her way through the village visiting shops that have since reopened. over here, recovery is an effort being taken on in part by friends of santa cruz state

parks. they launched a fund focused on the long-term support of this iconic sea cliff state beach. >> the storms keep coming so it is early days are now in terms of knowing what the price tag will be to fix this park, but we want to be there to give the community a way to support that over time. tim: the did -- amanda: the determination from those who have suffered so much across santa cruz county only highlights the community's unwavering resilience. >> i have seen people truly come together who are experiencing their own devastation and tragedy through this storm. even still through covid and come up to other people, "hey, amanda: amanda del castillo, abc7news. liz: and the river there were fears flooding could cut off the monterey peninsula and turn it into an island. that has not happened about a

neighboring county, the health department says 300,000 gallons of sewage were released onto the river monday. the health department says the sewage had been treated before overflowing into the river. 6:10, what is it looking like? francis: wet, soggy, downpours coming through parts of the san mateo bridge and the east bay. here's a live shot of the 10 retail bridge. we are in a storm level 3 for the next few hours. this strong storm will bring areas -- some areas over an inch of rain and i will let you know what you can expect for your neighborhood. liz: thank you. also ahead, emergency order extended. how santa clara county officials are trying to get additional resources as flooding concerns arise. plus schools adjust to the storms. what some custodians are doing in a prevent water from pouring into classrooms.

liz: taking a look at live doppler 7, the rain is moving through the bay area as we speak and it is wet and soggy. the careful on the roads. east contra costa county, it's only rank is now closed. the owner of paradise skate parks is the building had six inches of water surrounding it. they say it will take a while to replace the rank maplewood floor. they estimate repairs will be he $400,000. is hoping there will be federal or state relief funds. in the meantime, he set up a gofundme if you want to help. cleanup and repairs continue after the region was hit with mass power outages. officials are preparing for the next round of storms and making sure the public is ready. an emergency order has been extended through santa clara county to provide necessary resources.

the county chair says some homes are within the fema special area. the circumstances are challenging they are ready for the worst. >> cruise, as you are well aware, are working around the clock the past few weeks to remove debris and blockages from those portions of creeks and streams throughout santa clara county. liz: county shelters will be open throughout san jose and other parts of santa clara county, in case any other evacuations are necessary. as officials hope for the best, they are fast to point out the situation is dynamic. which we have certainly learned over the past few weeks. also over the past few weeks, we have seen numerous rescues across the state. people have been stuck in cars, homes, and flowing water. abc7news reporter luz pena spoke to a fire battalion chief about what you should do and not do if you are in a car surrounded by water. luz: it is a rescue that reflects the dangers of

floodwaters. >> take your time. >> you can see how fast that water is moving. luz: oakland fire crews and several other agencies stage two adults from being submerged along with their vehicle in hollister on tuesday. >> i think people don't realize how deep water is and how strong and powerful water is. it doesn't take much to have the water go over your wheel well and the amount of pressure from these flows. luz: sadly, with with more rain, more incidents of people being trapped in these conditions. on wednesday in sonoma county, a 43-year-old woman was found dead su authoritchg for a fiveeaold boway to schoolr swept away by oodwaters. oakland battalion chief james byron says the number one tip is to not drive through water, but if it happens -- >> it is activating 911 right away, knowing where your location is, always having a good sense of what road you are

on, what are you closest to? luz: here's a practical tip, if you can see the yellow or white lines, it is not a good idea to drive through standing water -- can't see the yellow or white lines, it is not a good idea to drive through the standing water. the fire chief recommends staying inside your vehicle to prevent hypothermia. >> if you start to take water in, you have to do something more aggressive where you may want to pull your window down and get out. you either get on the roof or get on the hood. you want to try to get onto the high ground. luz: your last option should be to swim out. >> water is very unforgiving. the thing about it, it is not just like water, it is all the other stuff. think about all the debris that gets swept down. luz: overall, avoid driving in heavy storm conditions and flooded areas. in san francisco, luz pena. abc7news. liz: the heavy rain is also having an impact on our public schools. many buildings that have flooding and lakes. i mckinley elementary school in san francisco, mikell is the

veteran custodian making sure floods and leaks are dressed before students arrive. at lunchtime he discovered another leak in this cafeteria. >> the water start coming this way, like that. or along the wall. >> we have been trying to stay on top of the problems and taking preventative action as far as putting sandbags, buckets, just to contain the water that is coming in. liz: many of schools experienced similar problems with custodians working overtime. when this flood of water came through the door, he created a meaning that -- many ditch to make the water flow back into the ground. appreciate the work he is doing. federal officials are warning californians to not be complacent with more rain on the way. feed my administrator dan criswellmathe st has theurs it r responding to those impacted by there are no barris and weg sure

d't let buaucracy get in the way, and that we can move resources as quickly as possible. luz: he says -- liz: they say fema has received governor newsom's request for a disaster declaration and will review it as soon as possible. a major disaster declaration recognizes the state suffered damage that requires resources beyond what most local governments can provide. it also recognize it is crucial for sending federal disaster aid. damage assessments are expected to surpass $1 billion. francis, let's get a longer check in the forecast. the day we are excited about is the 17th, maybe that is when we get dry weather. francis: tuesday after the mark luther king junior holiday is when we finally dry. this morning, we have had impressive rain totals, already areas in novato and san rafael have gotten over half an inch just this morning. san francisco almost a quarter inch and redwood city. look at live doppler 7, you can

see the orange there, yellows, that is a heavy downpour. movi bay area and will continue to do so over the next few hours. we have very heavy rain moving through parts of the east bay. if you check out the precipitation rain, .4r for tha through the east bay and the valley. then heavier rain in red and orange is expected to move through the peninsula into the east bay hitting san mateo around 7:07, fremont around 7:30. there is also reports of heavy rain, highway 17 has a mudslide near highway 17 and pine hill road. here is a live jose. those headlines -- headlights are northbound 280. a lot of folks are staying home and that is a great idea because , on our exclusive storm level impact scale, it is a level three, a strong storm this morning. we see downpours, we are expecting flooding, gusty winds, and thunderstorms are possible

today. even into this afternoon. dangerous surf conditions as gloria rodriguez reported from pacifica. check out the gusty winds, strongest at half moon bay and oakland, have bay 36 miles per hour. the winds are to 37 miles per hour in oakland. here's a live shot of the richmond-san rafael bridge. he wind there with the rain pushing through from the south so it is a tough drive. flood watch in effect all the way through monday because we have several more days of rain. flooding is possible for the entire bay area. a wind advisory in effect this morning, gusts to 50 miles per hour, so be careful there. of course dangerous conditions, high surf warning until 10:00 this morning with waves up to 30 feet. in addition to that, because of the high tides, there is a coastal flood advisory through monday morning. so the next couple hours, 7:00,

you notice heavy rain still in the bay area, starting to move east. by 9:00, we got clearing. 9:30, it continues to move east but heavy strain is expected right now before it turns into scattered showers this afternoon and into this evening. genly ywhere from hach t overnch and we get a little more in the afternoon. highs today will be mainly upper 50's for everybody. and great news for the 49er game, just showers for the most part. upper 50's to mid-50's throughout the game. and it will be a tough drive to the sierra with the winter storm warning on the way through monday. three to six feet of additional snow with gusts up to 70 miles per hour. here is the accuweather 7-day forecast. today is the toughest day all week with a stormy star, level 3. scattered showers into sunday and monday for the holiday. finally, a break on tuesday and we have dry weather and even the

liz: welcome back. here's a live shot from 101. slick roads and the heaviest of the rain is happening now through the next few hours. dozens of californians suddenly have storm damage to their homes or businesses and need repairs but contractors may overwhelm to. fraudsters may be lurking. 7 on your side's michael finney. michael: -- >> we got two to three feet of water. >> that's not good.

michael: for homeowners waiting out the storm, this is just the beginning. >> when a tree falls on someone's house, my heart goes out to that homeowner and i hope they get a good contractor. to get towac bmink t to fix major damage to your -- to their homes. >> just always do your research and avoid rushing into repairs. no matter how badly they are needed. michael: contractors licensing board, or csl be, says many folks may be so eager to fix the damage they could fall into a trap. >> get at least three bids and avoid hiring the first contractor who comes along, especially if they are going door to door. michael: predators target victims in disaster zones, going door to door, offering us with repairs. some may be legit, others may be unqualified, unlicensed, or unscrupulous. >> they often say i had leftover materials from another job adjusted, do you want me to fix your driveway? and they do a completely shoddy job. >> if they don't have a name on

announcer: building a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions, this is abc 7 news. liz: now at 6:30, rain is battering the bay area. we are waking up to a level three on our storm impact scale. how people are preparing and when to expect a break in the rain. that is the question everybody wants to know. good morning, everyone. as the storm moves in, we had team coverage. abc 7 is live in pacific about let's get back over to francis with the forecast.

good morning. francis: yeah, we have lots of what weather, especially right now is where we see the heaviest downpours. let me show you live doppler 7 and you can see the areas in red and orange, moving to the north bay and heading toward the peninsula right now. check out the rain rate over an inch, 1.2 inches per hour through the heavy areas. you can see or get an idea of how heavy the rain is and here is a live look as we zoom in a little closer. some of this heavy rain will head toward san rafael where they already had .91 inches this morning and this is moving towards san francisco and the peninsula coast. the area of orange there will head san mateo around 655 time and will be in hey where 7:20 this morning. a live shot of san rafael shows you this strong wind and heavy rain moving through. lots of folks have been staying home and it is a great idea if you do the same.

here is a live shot in san jose where the roads are inundated, headlights are north 280 and highway 17. it is a level 3 on our storm impact scale. this is a strong one, downpours and flooding, gusty gusty winds, thunderstorms possible, and dangerous surf conditions. check out the winds gusting to 37 miles per hour in oakland, 36 miles per hour in half moon bay, and these will be strong, up to 50 miles even over the next couple hours. a live shot of the richman san rafael bridge shows you more rain and windy conditions and i will let you know when we finally get a break. liz: thank you. the storm is whipping up waves flooding the area towns and opening a massive single in san mateo county. abc 7 news reporter gloria rodriguez is live with a look at conditions and it is just getting rougher and rougher. good morning. gloria: i know. good morning. that is why i'm kind of turning to the side because it is so

windy out here and it is one of the mornings where the rain is falling sideways. we are also seeing intense winds and waves in pacifica. we are expecting the waves to hit 30 feet tall so they have issued a high surf warning meaning no going in the ocean, no swimming or surfing because of life-threatening conditions. we have footage we want to show you. the san mateo coastline has been greatly affected by the storms with flooding and downed trees, a massive sinkhole causing a major headache for residents out here. we know part of highway 92, a main thoroughfare, is shutdown from highway 35 through main street and half moon bay. that has residents concerned about the impacts to the 911 response times along the county bayside and coast side regions. >> it could take as long as three hours. this is a dire situation. >> if a transport is needed, you

are probably looking at double or triple the amount of transport type vehicles to get the patient to the emergency room. gloria: many residents along the coast lost power and some several times during the storms. i have seen it next-door a lot of residents say they have no internet after several days. here in pacifica where we are, right down the street, there have been residents i have talked to that say they experienced flooding last week so they are undoubtedly on edge with today's storm. as you can see, the wind is continuing, the rain is very intense this morning. live in pacifica, gloria rodriguez, abc 7 news. liz: thank you for braving it for us for this report. we appreciate it. let's get to the south bay now. again, there are new evacuation warnings for cena clara county. some areas include the yuba's reservoir, the pass river basin and highway 101. heavy flooding, mudslides, high

wind, and other storm dangers are expected. evacuation warnings are not orders meaning people are not required to leave but should be ready to go. also in santa clara county, part of mines road is collapsed and closed to the alameda county line near del potro and san antonio valley. this is a vital route to get to the tri-valley and interstate 680 or to i-5. then in the sierra, trucks are being turned around on eastbound interstate 80 and applique due to multiple car spinouts over donner summit. caltrans says all other traffic is held at nyack and is unknown when the highway will reopen. travel is not advised. i know it is a holiday and a lot of people want to go up there but travel is not advised as the wintry conditions pick up into the weekend. drivers can expect icy roads, chain controls, and delays. >> it's not a joke to be cruising around. everybody who comes up in their

two wheel over the road. you have to know what you are doing this know or have a plan. liz: if you must drive, fill up your gas tank, bring extra food, clothes, and water. take a look at this snow in soda springs. this is what one woman saw during her drive home thursday. you can see there are walls of snow lining the roadways. that is a scary situation. in less than two weeks, the snow labs is more than six feet of snow piled in soda springs. you can track the rain, wind, and flooding forecast on our abc 7 bay area streaming app. we have the latest outlook and live doppler 7, the av seven bay area app is available on roku, apple tv, fire tv, and google tv devices. after floodwaters poured into a gym in san francisco's castro neighborhood, neighbors stepped up in a big way and there was another surprised the athletic retailer lululemon pitched in to raise funds for the gym's

recovery. suzanne phan has a look at what a difference that made. damage flooding did to this gym in the castro district after a storm pummeled the bay area. >> when we were standing here, basically the entire wall exploded with water. suzanne: the co-owner says a pipe burst in one of the gym walls. >> we estimate the cost to fix the wall, the cost the landlord will be about $20,000. then we have more cleanup costs, several thousand dollars, lost wages. every day we are close we lose about $8,000. suzanne: he says his gym weathered the pandemic but had to shut down right when they were expecting a bunch of new clients with new year's resolutions. >> we thought we were coming out the other side and then the mother nature slapped us across the face and said we are not done with you and have our gym close down because of flooding was such a punch in the got. suzanne: a gym across the street

stepped up to help them in a big way, setting up a gofundme campaign. on friday, another major surprise. >> lululemon found out about it and they said we want to do a fundraiser for you to support the gofundme. suzanne: all the money raised on this one day by lululemon's pop-up shop goes to help mx three. >> we have the go -- gofundme link tear, we are asking for a $30 donation. this is a screen printed with a design from a local artist. suzanne: the gofundme, started by the competitor gym, raised $8,000 in less than a week. remarkably, lululemon helped raise another $5,000 in less than four hours. that was on a rainy day. core movement and lululemon say they are happy to help. >> we are absolutely gob smacked. if there's ever a chance to use that where this is at. i cannot thank core movement and lulu for setting up this gofundme.

week long. ryan curry shows us how the program is working. ryan: it is not about -- not ideal situation but it is that her than what jon stewart would hav endured if he were in his vehicle. instead, he is sitting on a dry bed in a dry room. >> we wake up around 7:30-8:00 when breakfast is served. some of us go out and brave the elements. others stay here. lunch is served at noon. ryan: he is one of 20 people who utilized the services of christ episcopal church. normally, the church is open three nights a week for people to get off the street. due to the large amount of rain, church officials extended their hours to help people. >> it is really hard. tents that are now sitting in standing people are literally getting flooded out.

my colleague is in the storm. our photographer said driving on the bay bridge it is the worst he has ever seen it. be careful driving in these conditions. let's get a check of the forecast. at least we have a date inside when we might hit dry weather. francis: tuesday, that is when we get a dry day. moving through, live doppler 7, ares and orange, red, yellow. the precipitation rate around 1.5 -- 1.7 inches per hour in the student -- storm is moving quickly. you can see more rates over half an hour along the san mateo coastline and that will be moving through the san mateo area, san mateo peninsula area into the east bay. you can see heavy rain. half moon bay moving through san francisco and the bay bridge. in fact it will hit foster city around 7:00 this morning. a live shot of the golden gate bridge shows you some rain moving through, not too many

slides east a little more, 9:30, we get a break in parts of the north bay and on the peninsula. 10:30, we get to dry out, it moves these, and this afternoon we deal with scattered showers. still the threat of thunderstorms exists. many areas over an inch, san mateo possibly over an inch and a half in san ramon and the north bay too. this is a widespread, heavy rain event and the gusts will keep in the next hour, again up to 50 and more at half bay, 54 miles per hour. it will be breezy this afternoon as the winds shift coming from the west. highs will be upper 50's under cloudy conditions and scattered showers still possible and this means a ton of snow in the sierra, up to six feet with gusts to 70 miles per hour. you do not want be driving to and from until monday night. lowes tonight will be cooler with cleaver conditions,
