we are at rockaway beach in pacifica. one thing you can get a sense of is how big the waves are this morning. they are up to 20 feet tall. check out how strong the waves are. that is why they set up a high surf warning in effect until 10:00 this morning. no swimming, no surfing because of life-threatening swimming and surf conditions. along the peninsula, sky 7 footage shows a massive sinkhole where the road collapsed, part of highway 92, a main thoroughfare, is shut down indefinitely from highway 35 to main street and half moon bay. flooding, downed out. today, hundreds of meals will be given away to people affected by the floods along the sanat meo coast side. a famed chef hundreds of meals.

[laughter] it feels like you cannot catch your breath. amanda: this business owner described badly weeks of bad weather after years of the pandemic. she wants to make a difference so she is raising money for the santa cruz county disaster fund. it has established a home for those who rely on businesses that were hardest hit. >> a lot of the musicians who

liz: this video came in minutes ago from the north bay, where it has been a busy morning with a lot of storm damage. you can see a tree toppled, taking some power lines down with it. this is in sonoma county. a second downed tree is blocking all lanes. a powerball broken half, taking down more lines. a power crew is on scene but it

will take time for pg&e to take care of the lines. repairs continue after the region was hit with flooding and mass power outages. working to make sure the public is ready. and emergency order has been extended throughout santa clara county to provide necessary resources. es businesses in the county are within the fema special flood hazard area. county official said the circumstances are challenging but they are ready for the worst. >> crews, as you are well aware, or working around the clock to deal with blockages from creeks and streams. liz: county shelters will be open throughout san jose and other parts of santa clara county in case any evacuations are necessary. as officials hope for the best, they are fast to point out the situation is dynamic. you have seen that over the last few weeks as things keep

shifting. you have also seen numerous rescues across the state. people have been stuck in cars and homes and flowing water. we spoke to a local fire battalion chief about what you should and should not do if you find yourself in a car surrounded by water. >> a dramatic rescue that reflects the dangers of raging floodwaters. >> you can see how fast the water is moving. >> as water levels intensified, fire crews and other agencies saved two adults and their vehicle in hollister on tuesday. >> people do not realize how deep water actually is and how strong and powerful water actually is. it does not take much to have the water over your wheel well and the amount of pressure coming. >> with more rain, more incidents of people being trapped in these conditions. on wednesday in sonoma county, a 43-year-old woman was found dead inside her submerged vehicle.

in san luis obispo, people are searching for a five-year-old boy. there car got swept away by floodwaters. oakland battalion chief said the number one tip is to not drive through water. >> it is activating 911 right away. knowing where your location is. always kind of having a good sense of what road you are on. what are you closest to? >> if you cannot see the yellow or white lines, it is not a good idea to drive through standing water. the fire chief recommends staying inside your vehicle to prevent hypothermia unless conditions change. >> if your car become stopped and you start to take water in, you will probably have to do something more aggressive. you might want to your window down and get out and either get on the roof or the hood. you want to try to get on high ground. >> your last option should be to swim out. >> water is unforgiving. it is not just lake water. it is all that other stuff.

think about all the debris that can swept down. >> avoid driving in heavy storm conditions and flooded areas. luz pena, abc 7 news. liz: take a look at this. you are looking at an infrared satellite imagery from san jose ats teorologist and climate science department showing the storm track during the 15 day period from december 27 through january 11, 2023. this time lapse is made from over 600 images. we saw the heavy rain and high wind that cause so much damage across the bay area. it is really interesting and fascinating to see that. the silver lining although it has been a lot, it has made a dent in our drought. frances: finally, after all these storms, we made a big improvement. the bay area is only undercurrent moderate drought. we were under severe drought and

extreme drought. for the state also, it has improved a lot. currently most of the state is under moderate drought. we could use a few more but we could also use a break. i live dopplehow it is looking. you can see the line of the heavy and moderate storms and heavy rain has movedyou can seed the east bay and the south bay at this point. as we check out north, we have had a number of lightning strikes, 15 just south of reading. we could see some thunderstorms and lightning strikes this afternoon with isolated showers. a lot of reports of downed t and flooding and heavy rain in the bay area. luckily, the worst of it is over as it continues to slide east. storm level impact scale 3 until midday. we saw the downpours and

flooding with the gusty winds and dangerous surf conditions. a high surf warning will expire at 10:00. waves up to 20 feet. right now we are seeing big waves up to 16 feet in monterey. even though that expires, a coastal flood advisory is in effect through monday morning due to high tides coming in. minor coastal flooding is expected all around the bay. flooding possible through monday afternoon, with more rain expected through the holiday weekend. the wind advisory in effect with gusts up to 50 miles per hour. here is a live shot of windy conditions in santa cruz. you can see rain moving across the camera lens. those big waves in santa another live shot in san mateo where driving has been difficult. a lot of folks have done a great job staying off the roads. . temperatures in the mid-50's. it will stay that way most of

the day. we will climb up a few degrees by this afternoon. you can see the heavy the red, orange, yellow moving east toward sacramento, stockton, modesto. we will see some clearing by 11:30 in the bay area. still some rain in the north bay. this turns into scattered showers and possible isolated thunderstorms throughout the afternoon. rainfall rates range from over half an inch to 1.5 inches, depending on where the heavy downpours are throughout the day. here are the highs. mainly upper 50's in san francisco and oakland. 57. this means a lot of snow for the sierra until 10:00 monday evening. up to six feet expected with gusts up to 70 miles per hour. it is not a good time to drive until tuesday. lows will be dropping into the 40's because of clear skies.

sure the school building remains a safe space for students. >> it started coming this way. all along the wall. >> we have been trying to stay on top of all the problems and taking preventative actions in terms of placing sandbags and using buckets to contain the water coming in. liz: many of the district's schools have been experiencing smaller problems with custodians working overtime and getting creative. when this classroom was flooded, miguel the custodian dug a mini ditch on the outside to force the water to flow back. we are thankful for all of them and their hard work. we are thankful there is a break on the way in a few days. frances: we are still seeing some heavy rain starting to move east with live doppler 7. check out the numerous lightning strikes between reading and chico. about 17. relief is on the way.
