a soggy saturday in the bay area brings another round of damage, we have seen roads collapse and more trees come down taking out power lines. and we aren't done with the rain just yet. good evening thank you for joining us. you are watching abc seven news at 11. let's get to spencer tracking the rain, how does the rest of the weekend look? >> have got the answer are saturday is about to get less soggy here is a look at live doppler 7, we have still got scattered showers mainly light to moderate one little area of fairly steady heading out to tracy right now but generally

what is falling as light right now the storm is ranking only level one on the storm impact scale, overnight we will see more of scattered showers with periods of isolated downturn and totals of less than 10th of an inch. here is an animation starting at midnight. not much going on until about 6 a.m. another wave will come in and some of these can be pretty heavy and steady and then they will sweep through giving way to a dry day until late afternoon and early evening when the next storm be current -- begins to come in. i will have another look in a few minutes. >> lanes on the golden gate bridge have reopened after strong winds caused a semi-neutral -- topple over. planes were shut down in both directions as crews worked to remove the truck, luckily no one an elderly woman died in san francisco's golden gate park tonight when a tree branch fell on her, it happened near 30th ave her body was found by a jogger.

the storm packed a punch in the north bay toppling trees and triggering mud and rock slides while causing flooding and power outages. abc7news reporter cornell barnard with a look at some damage. >> the house shook a little bit and there was a big explosion from the live wires hitting and a flash. >> that is what gail heard and saw saturday the moment her 150 foot cypress tree fell over highway one closing the road and knocking out power to a wide swath of west marin. >> is your power out? >> yes it will be out for a while. >> most of the station was in the dark for hours but this bakery found a way to stay open. >> we brought a generator from home for our window lights and the registers so we have that going. >> the storm was fierce with heavy wind and rain. check out the intersection of

highway 12 and 121, it was closed after runoff from a nearby creek transformed it into a raging river. a calfire crew came upon this rock slide on dear rock road and this mudslide cleared portions of stage gulch road near petaluma, chp telling drivers slow down. in flooded, this person got stuck trying to drive through. >> my car got so wet it stopped. the motor quit running and i could not restart it. >> big trees came down and sonoma county blocking roads around sebastopol and occidental, this tree fell in mill valley closing marion avenue, after the rain stops flooding and mudslide issues may continue. >> all the runoff is going to increase water flow so that is a concern within 24 hours after a

significant storm. storms, plenty of waterfalls and a few rainbows. that rainbow chp says if you are out and about take it slow there is loss of flooding on the roadways including highway 10 one, in marin county cornell barnard abc7news. >> over in the east bay heavy rainfall caused a large tree to topple onto highway 13 in oakland. initially the tree was blocking all lanes heading in both directions there were some delays but that tree has been cleared. over in berkeley part of claremont avenue near tanglewood was shut down due to downed power lines. you can see this enormous tree created a mess and knocked out power to nearly 700 customers. pg&e has restored power. along the peninsula the rain continues to pound the coast,

line come down near campus and crushed a car. >> from pacifica to pittsburgh there have been power outages, clog storm drains, lightning and flooding. >> i'm sure you're aware of all the flooding, if you need to get out -- >> in pittsburgh police went door-to-door to warn residents of a sinkhole that opened up a storm drain dumping on more than a foot of water onto residential streets and flooding this neighborhood. city officials warn if the nearby creek floods could damage homes. >> at first i was worried about it because i don't swim. but now i am in my house relaxing and trying to get it out of my mind. >> along the peninsula flooding continues to impact residents since the start of the new year. >> it has been crazy on and off a lot of landslides, our road is closed. >> michael works in construction, his big concern is highway 92 which is still closed due to a sinkhole. he says alternative routes add up to an hour to his commute but

more than the inconvenience he is worried about his family. >> we are kinda stuck, i hope it gets fixed soon because for emergency exits that is the only one. >> the chp does not know when 92 will reopen. in pacifico i am hassan abc7news. >> l this afternoon the san lorenzo river briefly edged above major flood stages and big trees in the santa cruz mountains. according to the national weather service river hit 21.8 feet at noontime that river then quickly receded below it by the next reading 15 minutes later. it is currently below the moderate flood stage no word yet on any damage. cruz county has i mandatory evacuation for areas surrounding the bohart river as water continues to rise from intense rainfall. alterable mandatory evacuation orders have been reduced to

evacuation warnings in the southern parts of santa cruz county. residents can seek shelter at cabrillo college in santa cruz county fairgrounds. in the meantime president biden did approve a disaster declaration for california. that means residence in hard-hit santa cruz county as well as merced and sacramento counties can get federal aid. this can include temporary housing and home repairs and other programs to help people recover from the storms. to our other big story of 49ers opened up the playoffs today at levi's stadium against the seattle seahawks joining us now is chris for a look. we were a little nervous. >> when you're down by one at the half and momentum seem to be swinging seattle's way but what makes the nf -- the playoffs so compelling is if you don't bring your best your season could end in a hurry. it george kittle bringing the energy is always just before kickoff, i love george.

>> my husband heard a big crash and it looks like the tile that used to hold the mud up on the side of the hill crashed into my house. >> fire officials told the couple they had to remove their belongings and evacuate because another mudslide could happen. >> happening now the national weather service is advising people to avoid heading up to tahoe, these are current road conditions to the sierra mountains and you can see a lot of snow has fallen and even more is expected through the holiday weekend. and these white out conditions seen on interstate 80 because in low visibility and spinouts, drivers were forced to wait out the storm or returned around due to dangerous driving conditions. caltrans was out in full force clearing the roads for families eager to hit the slopes. >> were here for kids skiing tomorrow hopefully we will still be able to go and do that. >> we are so excited because

in most locations here is the forecast animation starting at midnight notice things are pretty quiet between 1:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. within this wave of showers comes in at 6 a.m. and they could produce some heavy downpours it won't last long and then we get a bit of clearing or drying out much of the day tomorrow and then another wave comes in another storm that will continue into monday so that will be our next storm. we have flood watch still in effect until 4 p.m. on monday for the entire bay area as you now know our soils are saturated, the coastal flood advisory is in effect, wave heights are elevated with large breaking waves crashing on shore. this is in effect until 9 a.m. monday at those waves can literally pull you out to see. they can produce beach erosion and localized flooding as well, back to the sierra where we were a moment ago. until 10 p.m. monday thi storm warning is in effect, heavy snow possible, likely with accumulations to up to 6 feet of

roads have opened back up in monterey county after flooding earlier this week. the salinas river reached flood stage on thursday and peaked friday morning. that river has since dropped which decreases the chance of it flooding over the bridge. earlier this week the sheriff's office issued evacuation orders in some areas. crews are still cleaning up major damage.

now the series of storms we have experienced our atmospheric rivers which are notoriously tricky weather systems to forecast. to help military airplanes that fly into hurricanes have been on assignment here in northern california. our reporter takes us aboard the hurricane hunters over the pacific. >> loaded. locked. the hurricane hunter plane it makes a drop scientists on dry land get more data over the pacific. >> cutting across the atmospheric river right now. >> and atmospheric river it moves 25 times as much water as the mississippi but streaming through the air out of the ocean. a of millions of people on the west coast. people who are already soaked california it started the year

with rain that turned deadly, floods from broken levees widespread wind damage. that is what greeted the 53rd reconnaissance squadron when it arrived in sacramento with four hurricane hunter aircraft. usually based in mississippi these are special cargo planes tricked out to gather and submit data. we were part of a small group of journalists allowed on board. up in the cockpit the starting his eighth year flying for this unit. >> just about the second or third year it is a relatively new mission for us. >> just like the name implies we are used to seeing hurricane hunters over the atlantic, they give us stunning visuals flying into the eyes of hurricanes. >> even in this river environment we tried to keep a distance from thunderstorms. >> but the mission is similar when it comes to weather data the pacific can be a big blue-black box. >> our job is to collect data from these atmospheric river

systems on the west coast. >> they do that using these, drop zones which they shoot out of the bottom of the plane. >> once they shoot the drop zones out of this tube deploys a parachute it will take 12 minutes to fall all the way to the ocean sending data back to the plane the whole way. >> dropping 25 to 30 zones. >> once that data comes on board it is sent to the plane to the world and within 10 seconds it is already in the weather models to be used by forecasters and scientists like anna wilson who studies atmospheric rivers. >> they are new -- only in the past two decades we have been able to spot them. there is a lot of research on going to understand how atmospheric rivers may change. >> a lot of us out west grew up hearing about atmospheric rivers but by a different name, the

pineapple express because of where they come from. >> we are basically halfway to hawaii. >> they can happen all over the world that they are forecasted landfall -- can be off by two to 300 miles. it is also hard to predict the amount of rain and when it is going to fall all crucial information to keep reservoirs from flooding. part of the trouble, the atmospheric river is around 10,000 feet and higher clouds can block satellite images. but these can punch through measuring more information and study show that data helps. >> we can have as much as 20 percent improvement in the precipitation intensity forecast in the pacific northwest. >> i've been on a mission it has been 12 hours but we would do anything less than 10 i will tell you that. >> hurricane hunters are used to long flights, they will pass the time with push-ups over the pacific for the least -- at least the next couple months. in sacramento i am brandon

ruderman. >> in the last few weeks we have seen numerous rescues across the state. people stuck in cars, homes and flowing water. abc seven news reporter spoke to an oakland fire battalion chief about what you should and should not do if you find yourself in a car surrounded by water. >> it is a dramatic rescue that reflects the dangers of raging floodwaters. >> you can see how fast water is moving. >> as water levels intensify fire crews and seven other agencies saved to adults from being submerged along with their vehicle in hollister on tuesday. >> i think people don't realize how deep water actually is and how strong and powerful water is it does not take much to have the water go over your wheel well and the amount of pressure coming from these flows. >> with more rain, also more incidents of people being trapped in these conditions. on wednesday in sonoma county a 43-year-old woman was found in dead her submerged vehicle.

in san luis obispo authorities are still searching for a five-year-old boy. his mom says they were on their way to school when their car got swept away by floodwaters. oakland battalion chief says the number one tip is don't drive through water but if it happens -- >> activate 911 right away, know where your location is. have a good sense of what road you are on, what are you closest to. >> here is a practical tip if you can see the yellow -- you cannot see the yellow or white lines and do not drive through water. >> the fire chief recommend staying inside your vehicle to prevent hypothermia unless conditions change. >> if your car become stopped and you start to take water and then you will have to do something more aggressive to where you might want to roll your window down, roll your window down and get out and get on the roof or get on the hood. you want to get on to higher ground. >> your last option should be to swim. >> water is very unforgiving it is not just lake water is all
