announcer: building a better bay area -- moving forward, finding solutions. this is abc7news. liz: efforts intensify. flood watches are in effect for millions of californians. the cleanup underway after yesterday's storm. and crash clear -- the golden gate ridge open after a big rig overturned, closing off to dozens of drivers. good morning and thank you for joining us. i'm liz kreutz. let's start with a look at the weather with frances dinglasan. more rain on the way? frances: we are seeing it in the form of scattered showers. we've got some light to moderate rain moving through parts of the east bay and south bay. we have a few storm reports -- you can see the number of reports, flooding reports around the bay area at this time.

our next storm gets a little heavier. a moderate level two on the storm impact scale. it moves and through tomorrow, brief downpours, isolated thunderstorms are possible. i want to show you the animation. until about 3:00 is a good time to get out and do anything you need to do because around 3:00, we will see the light rain move in and the heaviest rain will be closer to midnight and early morning hours. tomorrow morning, the commute will be a mess. hopefully a lot of folks have it off tomorrow but then we finally start to dry out. rainfall estimates by tomorrow afternoon will generally be an inch to an inch and a half and then more dry days to tell you about in the seven-day forecast. liz: happening in the north bay, fishel say both directions of highway 37 from atherton avenue to u.s. 101 are closed due severe flooding. the california highway patrol took these pictures.

you can see cruise trying to pump out floodwater. no word on when the highway will reopen. this is highway 37 in the north bay. along the peninsula, the rain is not as much a concern compared to yesterday but the aftermath remains an issue. high rains, heavy wind and flooding has led to power outages and roadblocks. sinkholes are another big issue. anser hassan checks in with people around the bay area. >> the afternoon rain pound the bay area. but for surfers, the weather was almost perfect. >> it is higher tides and lots of really good waves, lots of good barrels. bigger serve, but for people who are experienced, there's not any issue. >> but those offshore winds combined with heavy downpours continue to wreak havoc on land. a short instance away, the road collapsed. it is this type of impact on

infrastructure that worries pacifico residents jen bunko. >> there have been big waves, we've had trees down, the high school my daughter attends had a power line come down near campus and crush a car. >> from pacifica to pescadero to pittsburgh, there have been clogged stored drains, -- storm drains and flooding. >> if you need to get out, we can escort you up the street. >> in pittsburgh, police went door to door to warn residents of a sinkholes that opened up, flooding this neighborhood. city officials warn if the nearby creek floods, it could damage homes. >> at first i was kind of worried about it because i don't swim. but now i'm just in my house relaxing, trying to get it out of my mind. >> along the peninsula, flooding continues to impact residents since the start of the new year. >> it's been crazy.

a lot of landslides. i live on hills, the road is closed. >> his big concern is highway 92 which is still closed due to a sinkhole. he says alternative routes at up to an hour to his commute. but more than the inconvenience, he's worried about his family. >> i hope it gets fixed soon because for emergency exits, 92 is the only one. >> chp does not know when 92 will reopen. liz: this morning, we learning an elderly woman died in san francisco's golden gate park after a tree branch fell on her. this happened near 30th avenue and jfk drive. her body was found by a jogger. authorities did conduct an on scene investigation. all lanes on the golden gate bridge are open after strong winds because this semitruck to topple over. the bridge which shut down in both directions for over an hour as crews worked to remove the

truck. luckily, no one was hurt. caltrans has a warning for drivers -- a high wind advisory is in effect at the oakland bay bridge and travel is not recommended. taking a live look at the golden gate bridge this morning -- a much different picture than last night. if you are planning to cycle on the golden gate today, you should know to avoid this sidewalk. the west sidewalk is closed. the golden gate bridge highway and transit district reports a shack has blown over and is blocking access to the sidewalk. cyclists looking to ride across the bridge should use the east sidewalk until it has been cleared. in the east bay, heavy rainfall caused a large tree to topple in oakland. the tree was initially blocking all lanes heading in both directions. there were some delays but the tree has been cleared. a mudslide crashed into an oakland home yesterday. fire officials responded to the call of the tree intruding into

this home. the homeowners were home when it happened and described the moment to abc 7. >> my husband heard a big crash and it looks like the pile that used to hold the mud on the hillside crashed into my house. >> fire officials told the couple they had to move their belongings and evacuate because another mudslide could happen. the state of california will receive more funding as communities continue recovery efforts. president joe biden approved a disaster declaration and that means residents in hard-hit areas like santa cruz and merced can get federal aid. this can include temporary housing, home repairs and other programs to help people recover. 49ers stands enjoyed dry day at levi's stadium yesterday. on top of the win over the seattle seahawks, many loaded up on raingear expected -- expecting to get soaked.

ryan curry was there and chatted with fans who dodged raindrops after the game ended. >> a mad -- of people wearing jackets and ponchos as fans leave following the 49ers victory. >> i was prepared and the weather turned out very nice. >> fans who left the stadium said they didn't have to wear their raingear during the game. >> if it rains, it rains. we have no control over it, so it all worked out. the whole day worked out. it was perfect. >> you can call them lucky because as the game ended, there were downpours as people went to their cars. it still did not dampen their spirits. >> i came with a poncho and puff coat and with the mindset it's going to rain, so have fun. >> he says he was nervous for the rain at first but says he was fortunate to not have to endure it during the game. >> it came down a little heavier and after that, it stopped and it was mellow. we got a little son, but

liz: abc news anchor john carl spoke with adam schiff. he spoke on the investigation into classified documents easily uncovered at president biden's home and private office. he agrees appointing a special counsel to investigate the situation is the right move, however he thinks republicans request is hypocritical given how they reacted to documents found at mar-a-lago. >> i think congress has to handle both situations the same way, that is to get a briefing from the intelligence community about any potential risk to national security about where those documents were and what they contain. congress needs to be consistent and take the same approach. i don't think we ought to be doing things that are willfully

intended to interfere with the justice department's work. liz: when pressed by john carl, adam schiff also said classified documents and bidens possession could have implications for national security, but that more facts are needed. developing news at the u.s.-mexico border. the democratic mayor of new york is visiting the border as he asks the federal government for more help as migrants are being shipped north. this as the city of new york has seen a recent surge of migrants in that city. >> mayor eric adams touring the southern border asking the federal government for emergency funding for new york city. the mayor speaking with power jam radio. >> i believe it's irres we have not had a national response to what's happening at our border. >> new york city is not alone --

denver, chicago and washington dc asking for help. governors from texas, arizona and colorado have been busting migrants out of their states. adam says he can no longer afford to shelter more migrants. 40,000 coming to new york city since the spring, a record 800 and one day, 3100 last week alone. shelters in new york city are at their limits. this 1300 room luxury hotel is being used to house migrants. some are seeking asylum. adams says more is needed to house, feed and educate migrants. he says it will cost the city between $1.5 billion in $2 billion and he's only received 10 billy -- $10 million in federal aid. >> the strain on our infrastructure is immense. >> president biden visiting border meeting with el paso's mayor. across the country as well. liz: faith and community

from the naacp will address the water spray attack on an un-house person. this happened last week outside a san francisco art gallery. the person who sprayed the man is the owner of the gallery. in honor of martin luther king day tomorrow, they will be asking what would dr. king have done? leaders say they want an apology and investigators from the city and an investigation into the crisis. in about 45 minutes, the says if you had an -- had a reservation, it will be canceled and refunded. they say your ticket will not work to get you into the park later today. the series of storms we experienced are from atmospheric rivers, which are tricky to predict and forecast. the same military airplanes that fly into hurricanes have been on assignment here in northern california. brandon reutimann takes us aboard the hurricane hunters over the pacific. >> loaded, locked, and

this crew makes a scientists on dry land get more data over the pacific. >> we are going across the atmospheric river right now. >> and atmospheric river moves 25 times as much water as the mississippi river, streaming over the pacific ocean. a firehose pointed toward tens of millions of people on the west coast. people who are already soaked. california started the year with rain that turned deadly. floods from rogan levees, widespread wind damage, that is what greeted the weather reconnaissance squadron when it arrived in san francisco with four hurricane hunter aircraft. usually based in mississippi, these are special cargo planes tricked out to gather and transmit weather data.

we were part of a small of jonastallowed on board. cockpit, the pilot is starting his eighth year flying for this unit. the second doing the atmospheric river. >> like the name implies, we are used to seeing hurricane hunters over the atlantic. they give us stunning visuals, flying into the eyewall's of hurricanes. we are not going to do that this flight. >> we try to keep our distance from thunderstorms. >> but the mission is similar. the pacific can be a big, blue black box. >> these systems approaching the west coast. >> they use these drop zones which they shoot out of the bottom of the plane. once they shoot the drop zone out of this tube and deploy the parachute, it will take 12 minutes to fall all the way down to the ocean, sending data back to the plane all the way.

>> or 30 along the route. >> once data comes on board, it is sent from the plane to the world via satellite. within 10 seconds, it's in the weather models to be used by forecasters and scientists like anna wilson who study atmospheric rivers. >> they aren't new boat only in the past few decades have we been able to spot them with satellite. there's a lot of research on going to understand how atmospheric rivers may change climate change. >> a lot of us in the southwest heard about southwest rivers but it was known by a different name -- the pineapple express, because of where they come from. atmospheric rivers could happen all over the world but there forecast could be off by 200 or 300 miles. it is hard to predict the amount of rain and when it is going to fall, all crucial information to

keep reservoirs from flooding. part of the trouble is the atmospheric river is around 10,000 feet and higher clouds can block satellite images. but they can punch right through. measuring even more information and, studies show the data helps. >> we can have as much as 20% improvements in the intensity forecast in the pacific northwest. >> i have been on a mission, 12 hours. >> hurricane hunters are used too long flights. they will pass the time with push-ups over the pacific for at least the next couple of months. liz: fascinating. let's get a check on the forecast now. more rain on the way but hope in sight. frances: we see some dry days, full dry days ahead. we will get a little bit of a break this afternoon. our next system arrives as a storm level two.

you can see with live doppler 7 over the past few hours, as we posit where it is right now, we see some showers moving through the east bay and parts of the south bay. here's a live look at san jose, san francisco, 52, san jose, 53. half moon bay, 54 degrees. you can see lots of raindrops with our live camera shot at 680 in walnut creek. at santa rosa, upper 40's napa currently at 50. concord at 50. livermore at 49 degrees. this next storm is a level moderate storm on our storm impact scale. we could see brief downpours during the late-night hours into early morning hours and isolated thunderstorms are possible. more likely toured the monterey coast because the system is starting to track a little farther south. a flood watch in effect through

tomorrow afternoon and we will get another inch or inch and a half of rain through tomorrow. a coastal flood advisory in effect do to high tides. we are expecting minor coastal flooding along the coast and bay for low-lying areas with a beach hazard statement in effect until 9 a.m.. storm debris could be on the beaches and waters, so it is dangerous to head out there and surf with waves up to 15 feet. highs today will be in the mid-50's for the most part. cooler temperatures and parts of the north bay, but san francisco, 55. oakland and san jose at 56. check out the wet weather overnight into tomorrow morning. temperatures in the low to mid 40's. ve shotweave in tahoe, expecting one or two feet of snow with a winter storm warning in effect until tomorrow night. if you can hold off traveling until after the holiday weekend, that would be a better time to

place eastbound at highway 35. there will be some closures as crews continue to make repairs. take a look at this -- large chunks of asphalt shifted until nearly half the road slid down a hill. this was in pescadero yesterday. the worst of the weekend storm is over but the damage is still requiring a lot of cleanup around the bay. the storm packed a punch in the north bay, toppling trees and triggering rock slides while causing power outages. cornell barnard has a look at some of the damage. >> house shook a little bit and there was a pretty big explosion from the live wires hitting and a flash. >> that is what gail heard and saw saturday morning the moment a 150 foot cypress tree fell over highway one, closing the road and knocking out power to a wide swath. >> is your power out? >> iut for a while.

i'm going to town to get some ice. >> a bakery found a way to stay open. >> my coworker brought his generator from home for our window lights and register, so we have the registry going. >> the storm was fierce with heavy wind and rain. check out the intersection of highway 12 and 121 in sonoma -- it was closed after runoff from a nearby creek transformed it into a raging river. a cal fire crew came upon this rock slide on deer park road in napa county and the mudslide closed pettit -- portions of stagecoach road near petaluma. chp telling drivers to get out. armstrong avenue was flooded. one person was stuck trying to drive through. >> the car just got so wet that it stopped. the motor quit running and i could not restart it. >> big trees came down in sonoma

county, blocking roads around sebastopol and occidental. this large tree fell in mill valley. first responders say after the rain stops, flooding and mudslide issues may continue. >> all the runoff is going to continue to increase and that's always a concern 24 hours after a significant rain shower event. >> the upside of all the january storms, plenty of waterfalls and few rainbows. the rainbow did not stick around long. chp says if you are out and about, take it slow. there is lots of flooding on the roadways, including highway 101. cornell barnard, abc7news. liz: river, briefly edged above major flood stage yesterday. this is in the santa cruz mountains. the river hit anyone .8 feet at

noon. the river quickly receded below by the next rating 15 minutes later and is currently below the moderate flood stage. no word on any dage. roadacin monterey county after flooding earlier this week. the salinas river reached flood stage thursday and pete friday morning. the river has since dropped. this decreases the chance of it flooding over the bridge. earlier this week, the sheriff's office issued evacuation orders major damage.. governor gavin newsom is reminding the state to be vigilant as we are faced with jessica harrington talks to people who have been forced out of their homes in merced county waiting for repairs. >> the whole house had to go. >> he and a handful of friends and family numbers were hard at work at his families in plan outou of. his parents had been on vacation in mexico this week, so he and his siblings rushed to the home

when they heard about flooding earlier this week. dirt and grass show just how high the water got inside. for been working around the clock to clean it up. a few streets away, the martinez family was preparing for more rain and potential flooding. earlier this week, water got inside their home and on the carpet. late saturday night, president biden declared a major disaster in california, opening the door to federal aid for those hit the hardest. the governor explained prior to the announcement how the declaration could help people and businesses impacted. >> the direct relief, the sba loans and other things present themselves. that's what we are trying to work on and provide to the extent we can save lives in the counties affected. >> mind are the kids out of school because of flood damage. >> we did make the plea he

provides some flex ability with the department of education to make sure kids get some instruction over the coming weeks. >> the governor reminded people to stay vigilant and listen to warnings from officials until the storms had passed. >> let's get through this, we will get through this and come out the other side more resilient. liz: the governor suggested people start totaling up the damage from the storm and keep any receipts so you will be ready for the process. governor newsom is calling for all resources to help with cleanup. inmates who have been fully trained as firefighters have been working for days to clean up bree in the sacramento area. crews are cutting down trees and helping calfire. still ahead on abc seven mornings -- beware at the beach -- the national weather service issuing other beach hazard statement until tomorrow morning. here is a live look from the santa cruz camera. we will check in with friends is we get back.

liz: here is a lie look at the san mateo camera. quite a few cars on the road this sunday morning. still very gray and dreary out there. helping news overnight -- at least 68 people are dead after a yeti airlines passenger plane crash in nepal. the flight carrying 72 people was on its way from the capital to a resort town. according to flight radar.com, the aircraft had an old transponder with unreliable data. all of the air carriers are banned in the european union because of safety concerns. the crash was nepal's deadliest since 1992. the national weather service issued a beach hazard statement through 9:00 tomorrow morning for the entire california coastline north of santa rosa south to big sur. this is what it looked like in pacifica. one couple said they have been
