solutions. this is abc 7 news. reggie: now from the coast. a message from the national weather service this morning about kumasi: dangerous conditions. kumasi:homeowners evacuated from the mudslide evacuating people from the peninsula. reggie: how may land size the state has seen because of the storms. kumasi: brain is moving out in the next few hours. when we will finally see some sunshine. reggie: good morning. welcome to monday, january 16. drew: today you've got rain. reggie: but is it tomorrow? drew: we are on the tail end of some heavy rain early this morning around midnight to 2 a.m. with very heavy showers. light in nature, but look at what's happening. at our highest peaks, you see live doppler 7 -- live doppler 7 showing you this purple, which

is snow. cold air is moving in. a flood advisory is in effect for most of us until 5:45 this morning. a lot of standing water on the roads, so be aware of that first thing this morning. the light showers are tapering over the next several hours. showers are on their way out. gusty winds are weakening, but watch out for water on the roadways. here's future weather. by 7:30, most of us are bring out. later today, a mostly cloudy day. one more storm to get through this week before we enter a dry, sunny stretch. we will show you that, coming up in just a few minutes. jobina: as rain continues to come down in the bay area, it is to making a mess in the east bay. residents of a complex had to evacuate because of flooding. in holland is live with the damage there. lena: good morning. we are live right outside of the fox creek complex, or we are

seeing serious letting going across the roadways. over my left hand shoulder, if you take a look here, this is the serious flooding that is completely blocking the roadway. that is what had to evacuate some of the folks living at this apartment complex overnight, although we are still working to get more information on the folks in the complex and have any people had to leave. thing is for certain, if you can see amount of water out here, this is just not safe for anyone to pass. now to look at some of t damage we saw over the weekend. we knew that flooding in this area would be a possibility after a collapse on saturday night. the water running off into kirk kerkorian. -- cooker creek. this was so strong it pushed down a 10 foot fence. >> if we have a really heavy rainfall, the creek will back up even more. there are some properties that may be affected.

we are going to be monitoring that. lena: that was a city engineer sharing his concerns with us over the weekend, with plans to keep a very close eye on this problem area as the rain picked up there at the weekend and into monday morning. back here live outside of the fox creek apartments, you are taking a live look at some of the flooding we are seeing passing across the roadway right now. this route is completely closed off, as you can see here. it is just not safe for anybody to pass through. this is something that we talk about all the time on the morning show. when you see standing water like this, do not drive through. you don't know how deep it might be. luckily, it is taped off right now to any drivers in this area. we are going to continue to stay out here and monitor this condition, giving a live look in the next half-hour. the national weather service is warning you to stay away from the water. on the coast during the storming

weather, a coastal flood advisory is an effective 9:00 this morning. the warning for dangerous surf and debris covers beaches in san francisco, the north bay, and the peninsula. reggie: on the peninsula, all the rain has calmed down, the wind and flooding poses safety threats to drivers and residents. this massive tree took down power lines and blocked one homes driveway. in this neighborhood, wessel came across a number of branches leaning across power lines. neighbor say they don't mind the rain, but they are ready for the stormy weather to stop. >> i'm looking forward to clearer rather. i've got a lot of shoes that are soaking wet. [laughter] reggie: the rain still coming down and roadways continue to expense issues as well. in timoteo, the driver of this mustang lost control on highway 101 and ended up in a ditch. if you do have somewhere to drive, please be careful, because the roads are slick and that could cause hydroplaning. jobina: the postal service has confirmed that one of its trucks

toppled over on the golden gate bridge. the tractor-trailer was heading south over the bridge when it was blown onto its side on saturday. the bridge was shut down in both directions for more than an hour as crews worked to remove the truck. a postal service spokesperson says the trailer was nearly empty, only holding a few cages of mail, and the driver thankfully wasn't hurt and no mail was lost. reggie: a falling tree branch killed a woman in golden gate park. a jogger found the woman just after 5 p.m. on saturday. she was lying on the sidewalk near a large tree branch. emergency services tried to revive her, but she did not respond. the victim was a san francisco resident. jobina: crews have risen -- have resumed the search for a five-year-old boy who was swept away as his mom's suv was overtaken by floodwaters one week ago. kyle's mother told authorities his last words to her before being swept away were, "mom,

it's ok, just be calm." the search is taking place and what the sheriff's office describes as extremely challenging conditions of high water levels. they will continue to search on a day-to-day basis. reggie: a town near belmont has blocked one boulevard, forcing homeowners to evacuate. the homeowners are hoping to return to rescue some items once the area has been secured. neighbor say a family with young children are now out of the home. >> we are not directly affected. i feel very bad for them. it's horrifying. it really brings it home. it's good to get to know your neighbors, know where they are, know how to reach them. reggie: the mom police say a block is closed indefinitely. jobina: just to paint a picture of the damage left behind from this onslaught of storms, take a look at this map from the california geological survey. it shows a number of landslides this month.

since december 30, there have been northern 400 landslides across the state. you can see that they are happening a lot in the bay area in santa cruz county. reggie: one of those landslides is in the east bay, niles canyon road. it remains closed in both directions. it was shut down saturday morning and there is no estimated time for reopening. jobina: another landslide brought down a large tree in oakland. you can see crews clearing the debris from the lanes of highway 13. the landslide shut down both lanes of traffic just before 11:00 last night. the chp has reopened the northbound lanes, but the southbound lanes remain closed right now. there is no estimated time to win those will be open, and at last check, no injuries have been reported. we have been posting information on road closures and other alerts on our website. it's on the front page, with a list of live updates. you can check on that on abc7news.com. drew: 5:07 a.m. live doppler 7 shows heavy rain move through here early this

morning, around 1 a.m. or 2 a.m. many of us picked up up to one inch of rain and heavy snow in the sierra. at the tail end of the showers this morning, most of today is mostly cloudy. a break in the rain tomorrow, then here comes our next storm. this one arrives on wednesday, bringing another round of showers. live doppler 7 right now. light showers and high elevation snow. here's the back edge of the storm system. it will be pushing up by about 9 a.m. this morning. clouds will linger for much of the day. on the exclusive abc 7 storm impact scale, this is a level one light storm for the next few hours. showers are exiting, gusty winds are weakening, but please watch for water on roads. his standing out there. when's right now at about 25 mph in our strongest areas, bringing in some cold air. temperatures back in the 40's. it has been quite sometime since we had chilling air. you will feel that first thing this morning. outside, a little look at sutro tower.

it's a mostly cloudy day, with temperatures only in the low to mid-50's. the three-day forecast shows we do get a break tomorrow, but by wednesday, we have another storm that moves in here. wednesday storm is the final one and what has been a parade of storms this past month. we will talk about the drug power setting up after that in the next few minutes, but first let's check in with sue. sue: good morning, everyone. it is busy on the roads. it is wet, a lot of standing water. we have discussion for you, with flooding, hydroplaning possible, standing water. please, the best advice is extra time and extra distance between yourself and the other guys on the road. a high wind advisory. if you look closely, you can see the rain blowing across the san mateo bridge. at one point this morning, we had an incident on the high-rise in the westbound direction and the flat section in the eastbound direction. it does look to be cleared, but slow traffic remains. light traffic on the golden great, but the caltrans signs

least 60 people are dead and four others are still missing after an airlines passenger plane crashed in nepal. the twin-engine plane flying from kathmandu was trying to land when it crashed yesterday. search and rescue crews are now working to find the four missing people. officials have found the plane's black box. they are calling this nepal's worst airplane crash in 30 years. jobina: back here in the u.s., federal authorities are investigating how two planes nearly collided on the runway educate airport in new york. one expert says it could've been the worst aviation disaster in american history. this morning, we are hearing the moment when air traffic controllers prevented the catastrophe. reporter: the passengers involved in a near t-bone collision at new york's jfk airport say they are still shaken by the close call. >> i will never not wear my seatbelt on a plane. reporter: a panicked air traffic

controller noticed an american airlines plane on the same runway as a delta plane. >> cancel takeoff plans. reporter: the two planes missed each other by just 1000 feet, the delta pilot slamming on the brakes at 115 mph. brian was on the delta flight. >> everyone was just thrust forward. i am just thankful for the judgment calls traffic controllers made were the right ones. reporter: is now being investigated. but the air traffic controller is telling the american pilot they did not have permission to be on the runway. >> human mistakes were made. the important thing now is to find out by whom and to put procedures in place to make sure it never happens again. reporter: american airlines has not commented on the near miss. in a statement, delta said, "the safety of our customers and crew

are the number one priority." experts say the air traffic controller who alerted the pilot should get credit for averting a catastrophe. >> this could've been the worst aviation disaster in u.s. history. that guy saved the day. kudos to him. reggie: i am fully shook by that story. jobina: completely. reggie: the house congressional oversight committee is now investigating california's unemployment insurance system. according to "the chronicle," a letter was sent about questions about pandemic insurance scams. it may have paid out up to $30 billion in fraudulent claims during the pandemic. new york and pennsylvania, two largely democratic states, also received letters from the committee. jobina: after more than a decade, oakland chinatown is bringing back its lunar new year parade. the newly formed oakland chinatown improvement council is hoping to "refresh oakland's

a growing number of bottlenose dolphins are being spotted at several locations. they are the dolphins often used at shows in water parks. it has happened over decades and for the first time in a new study, there is expansion across california. a study found there were 84 dolphin sightings in the bay area between 2007 and 2018. reggie: fashion and technology are blending together for a two and one piece. they are earrings and earbuds. they are made with real pull real pearls and precious metals. they feature two speakers, which use directional sound to transmit audio up to the ears. the earbuds are not meant to be noise canceling. only the person wearing them can hear the sound. they cost about $750. jobina: well, there's the catch, because those are key. what's old is new again among gen z. first, it was disposable cameras, then low rise jeans.

times to help the person over the last few weeks, but nothing seemed to help. this weekend, religious and community leaders called for him to apologize for what he did. they also say everyone in san francisco needs to do a better job of getting people off the street and into housing. >> i don't think any of us believe we should just usher people off the street to nowhere. but instead, we should be making sure that they have a place to go and that they receive the treatment that they need. >> i am deeply apologetic and poured up when i watch that video. i completely broke. i am not equipped or trained to deal with a long-term citywide problem like this. i'm committed to making amends and helping others. reporter: district attorney jenkins went on to say her office weighing to do a better job referring people to programs that suit their needs. she says previous da offices did not do that properly.

homeless advocates still say they are plenty of other methods to use to help homeless in the city, instead of reverting to harmful actions. in the newsroom, ryan curry, abc 7 news. reggie: thank you. on storm watch again this morning. overnight, people living in the fox creek apartments in pittsburgh had to evacuate because of floodwaters. lena howland is live in pittsburgh. what's happening there now? lena: we are live in pittsbu right next to the fox creek apartments, or some folks do need to be evacuated because of serious flooding in this area. take a look right behind me. you can see where harbor street is blocked off because of serious flooding moving across the roadway and rushing onto's newman avenue. -- onto stoneman avenue. we are keeping a close sound this to keep us safe as well. the water is coming from the

creek only one street down from stoneman avenue. that is why some folks needed to be evacuated overnight, because this just is not safe to be living right next to. we knew that flooding in this area would be a possibility after a sinkhole collapse on saturday night just outside of church, the good shepherd catholic church. this is a look at some of the flood damage we saw over the weekend. the water was so strong, even pushing down a 10 foot fence after it started to rise. >> on wednesday morning, a sinkhole appeared over this pipe. we believe, from photos we have seen in the evaluation of the facility, that the top of the pipe has failed in soil from above has partially filled this storm drain line. lena: that was a city manager you just heard from. he warned that if we did get a heavy rainfall, the creek would back up even more, threatening properties nearby. that's exactly what we are

seeing happen live this morning. back here live outside the fox creek apartments, looking at where harbor street is closed off, we are still working to get more information on how many people needed to be evacuated. but if you do have to be out on the roads this morning, this is one area you will want to avoid, here at harbor street and stoneman avenue, because of that serious flooding of the across the roadways. we are keeping a very close ionic as it continues to fill up this roadway and move a bit closer to us in these apartments next door. for now, reporting live in pittsburgh, lena howland, abc 7 news. jobina: we now move to the north bay, where the buildup of rain is leading to serious problems on roads. this road collapsed. the moran county fire department says the road is closed indefinitely. in nevada, one highway remains close due to flooding. there are six water pumps

working to move out all the floodwater from the highway. officials say with the storms where seeing, it's taking a toll on the roots. >> we are pumping the water, but it is difficult to get ahead of the game. too much rain, too much water coming in all at once. jobina: officials say the pumps are doing a good job of getting the floodwater out of the roadway, but with the rain coming in this morning, caltrans expects the highway to stay closed. this morning, more than 6500 customers are without power. as of 4:30 am, the most affected areas are the east bay southbay. reggie: in the cr, snow has been making it difficult to travel. the national weather service says the heaviest snowfall is expected this morning and afternoon. over the weekend, drivers dealt with white out conditions so bad that stretches of interstate 80 were shut down. chains are required on both 80 and highway 50. the uc berkeley central area

snow lab says and just of past week, it has measured more than 7.5 feet of snow. throughout these stormy days, we've been keeping you informed through our abc 7 news app. you can get alerts right to your phone. download the app now and make sure you enable push alerts. jobina: san francisco police are investigating a robbery involving a woman who was sitting in her car. this video shows a woman driving a van out of a parking lot at a supermarket, along an avenue. you can see the suspect exit the vehicle and then they go to look into the passengers side. then, he walks around the van to the driver side window while the driver is still inside. you can see his body going into the vehicle. there is a brief struggle, then the man climbs almost all the way through. the woman tells abc 7 news, her purse was stolen and she won't be going to work for a wall because of the trauma. police have not made any arrests and are asking if you have any information, please come forward.

reggie: new developments this morning, as house republicans are promising for more investigations into president bynum, after classified documents were found in his home and private office. this comes after a special counsel for the matter was appointed. meanwhile, house judiciary committee launched a second investigation into how the doj handled the biden documents case. comparisons are being drawn to the fbi's search of former president trump's mar-a-lago home. >> we will have a role in overseeing what's transpiring here. what's really concerning to me is how justice is applied and if it is applied equally. reggie: abc news reports the white house will cooperate fully with the special counsel investigation. however, it is unclear right now how they will respond to the house judiciary committee. jobina: today, several places will be closed in observance of dr. martin luther king jr. day. the dmv, city offices, banks, and public libraries will be closed.

westbound from golden gate fields through berkeley and emeryville, on into the bay bridge toll plaza, no delays here. it is wet and there is a wind advisory, but no delays so far. good coming into san francisco. overall, the same road closures we have had. we have had this flooding on 880. this is right near dixon landing road. lanes are blocked and it's backing up toward 237. give yourself extra time. chp says they have tried and cannot get that flooding out of lanes. it's not a drain issue. you will just have to slow down. drew says that will probably be after 9:00 this morning.
