>> building a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions. this is abc7news. dan: good evening and thank you for joining us. ama: a jewish nonprofit group says its board -- billboards have been defaced. dan: the police department is investigating this as a hate crime. tim johns has the story. reporter: you might see billboards like this one. created in hot pink with messages designed to grab people's attention in a bid to fight back against anti-semitism. >> we have jewish resources and education for people who want to know a little bit more. reporter: the cofounder of jew

along. two billboards were vandalized this week after someone spray-painted phrases like free palestine on them. >> i believe in human rights for palestinians and israelis and peace. reporter: the group has been in contact with the berkeley police department which is investigating the incident as a hate crime. >> it's ongoing. they are going to try to figure out, they will be looking at cameras and things like that. reporter: most recent data shows that documented reports of harassment and violence against jews are the highest on record. anti-semitic flyers have popped up in cities like san francisco and danville. do belong say they remain determined. they will continue putting up billboards around the country. >> i will not go away because they are bullies painting over our billboards.

we will put them up again and come back and be strong. reporter: abc7news. ama: bart's board of directors will consider censuring one of its members over a racist and insensitive comment. the director used the term during a racial equity initiative presentation. the board will consider whether to remove him from committees. next week, bart's board will discuss ways to remedy the agency's budget shortfall. low ridership has severely impacted bart's services which rely on fair revenue. some suggestions to cut cost include closing stations and mass layoffs. dan: oakland mayor zhang tao will make her first public comments on the decision to place chief leronne armstrong on paid leave. armstrong is off the job as cheese of belief --

police after he failed to take action off of a sergeant who ripped the bumper off of a neighbor's car. the former oakland police chief calls it a setback she was fired in 2020 for reporting alleged misconduct. she filed a lawsuit disputing her termination. >> one of the biggest cancers in law enforcement is the idea that officers won't come forward. and report misconduct. i come forward and report misconduct and i'm fired for it. talk about undermining. dan: the police department remains under federal oversight which has been going on for 20 years following past cases of brutality and misconduct. there have been 10 police chiefs in oakland in the past 10 years. howard jordon took over for anthony batson 2011. jordan stepped down citing medical reasons. he was replaced by anthony starita he who lasted just two

days. the federal overseer was reportedly about to oust both jordan and to reveal but both resigned first. shawn wins took over for the next three years until a sex scandal rocked the department in a series of chiefs who lasted just days. six months. andrew patrick was chief from january 20 and 17 to february of 2020. he was fired successfully sued for wrongful termination. darren allison was asking -- acting chief for less than two months. he's the acting police chief once more. susan manheim are held the office for less than a year. she was replaced by leronne armstrong who is now on administrative leave. ama: police are looking for a suspect connected to an attempted rape. take a look at the man police are looking for. the victim tells officers they

were cornered by him at the store where they work on international boulevard. the victim fought back and got away unharmed. the suspect is a black man, about six foot medium length hair covering his ears. if you recognize this person, call police. ama: a call from -- dan: a call from the u.s. attorney general. merrick garland is pleading with local officials to keep pouring in effort. as tara campbell explains, more help is on the way. >> each of you understands better than most the human toll of this crisis. reporter: merrick garland making the fentanyl crisis of focus friday at the conference of mayors and d.c. >> you have witnessed for has a -- first-hand the devastation wrought by fentanyl poisonings and overdoses. reporter: london breed announcing this week a push to establish privately funded safe consumption sites and the district attorney describing an

all hands on deck approach. >> we are trying to intervene on every level. we have to cut supply but we want to decrease demand because that's what's going to cut off supply but also help individuals change their lives. reporter: 107,000 americans die of a drug overdose in 2021 according to the cdc. 625 of those deaths were in san francisco, the majority caused by fentanyl. >> in 2022, the dea asked law-enforcement partner seized more than 50.6 million fentanyl laced fake prescription pills. that's more than double the amount seized in 2021. reporter: the dea seized more than 10,000 pounds of fentanyl powder. >> together, these seizures represent more than 370 million deadly doses of fentanyl.

that much retinal -- fentanyl could kill every single american. reporter: the number shows a similar situation in san francisco. in the last two years, 12 times the amount of fentanyl has been seized from the streets of the tenderloin. >> it's enough liesel overdose to kill every adult in california. reporter: the doj poured more than one -- $330 million into helping communities combat the crisis. garland says more will be coming down the pike along with continued effort to crack down on cartels. >> the department of justice is using every tool at its disposal to save american lives. reporter: abc7news. dan: for more on the battle against the drug overdose crisis, watch taras abc 7 original documentary called injecting hope, streaming now on our abc 7 bay area news app and on our website. ama: the cities

force is offering free lead testing for students at buena vista horace mann school. last year, elevated levels of lead were discovered in the soil in the courtyard and multiple faucets. free screenings started today students and families could walk in tomorrow from 9:00 to 4:00. the screenings will be available next week -- the next two saturdays after that. in the east bay, officials at richmond high school are hoping classes will be back in session monday after shutting down early because of a bad smell. an electrical burning sent a strong smell. they will spend the weekend looking for the cause of the smell. dan: storm cleanup continues around the bay area. one home is a total loss after a landslide. the force ripped the house from its base and sent it sliding down a hill. a county building inspector deemed the home unsafe on

wednesday so the family was not there when the site happened yesterday. the home next door has been yellow tagged and neighbors say they are staying very alert. in santa cruz, traffic controls in place along westcliff drive. construction crews can assess the damage to the street and walkway caused by this months storms. they will complete an emergency stabilization plan starting monday. drivers can expect detours and one-way traffic between columbia street and woodrow avenue. ama: silicon valley plays host to gamers from across the country this weekend. many excited to be back together since the pandemic. >> you have to get out and experience it. it's the future of competition. dan: a much-needed boost to business. spencer: effect for tonight. sunny days ahead. the accuweather forecast in just a moment when abc7news at 11:00 continues to get daca continues.

the lunar new year gets underway tomorrow across the globe and california has become the first state in the nation to make it an official holiday. this lunar new year celebrates the year of the rabbit. the westlake shopping center in daly city kicked off the festive rabbit lucky celebration. they enjoyed live music, photos with the rabbit mascot, and red banners to hang up for good luck and good fortune. the parade and special dragon dance performance also took place during today's festivities. ama: we should have good weekends--- for the celebrations. dan: and the 49ers game. spencer: it's our good fortune to have good weather for this week. let's start with a live view right now here in san francisco, looking out over the city. it is currently 46 degrees in san francisco. 39 in oakland. 37 in palo alto.

really chilly and most of the inland areas. 37 at santa clara as well. the view looking westward across the bay. mid to upper 30's from san araz at uno votto. one more live you from a rooftop camera looking toward the bay bridge. sunny days and cold nights will be with us this weekend. dry pattern continues for the next seven to 10 days. warming trend begins the nettle of -- middle of next week. we have a freeze warning in effect from 1:00 to 9:00 tomorrow. that's for all the bay area except for communities around the bay shoreline. temperatures down to 30 degrees and the coldest spots. here's a look at some of our projected lows. 31 at santa rosa. low 30's in just about every inland location. low 30's in many bayshore locations. sunny skies in the mid-50's. let's take a look at some of the things we need to be cautious about.

coastal flood advisory in effect until 3:00 monday because of king tides, unusually large high tides. the highest ones of the year. minor coastal flooding is likely. we also have a beach hazard statement in effect through sunday afternoon because of high tides. dangerous surf conditions. increased with -- risk of strong rip currents. unexpected waves running onto the beach and they can be dangerous. here's a look at the accuweather 7-day forecast. seven sunny days coming our way. it will start to warm up around the middle of next week. daytime highs up to the mid-50's. low 60's on wednesday, thursday, friday. 49ers game on sunday at levi's stadium. playoff divisional game starts at 3:30. it will be a sunny afternoon with a temperature around 58 degrees. it will get cooler going into the early evening hours but not below 49. dan: coincidentally.

the hype is real. the 49ers and cowboys have one of the greatest rivalries in the league's history. ama: ryan curry spoke with two long time 49ers fans who are looking back on some of those great moments. reporter: we are sitting in these iconic red seats at the place where it all started. john ferris and larry tom and can't help but think, here we go again. >> it's been a never -- never-ending saga of wanting to beat the cowboys and reveling when we can stick it to them. >> people that i know who go to the games are nervous right now. reporter: these fans have seen it all but one matchup was always personal, the dallas cowboys. >> when the cowboys came my house just started bubbling, getting ready to go to these games. reporter: if you asked those fans the history between the cowboys and the 49ers started here at keys are stadium. before they embarked on their journey to candlestick park,

we started with the 82 game and we showed them the 92 game, the 94 game just to see all that history so everyone has an idea with the dallas and niners mean to people. we started with our game last year which was 2021 to show them that they are a part of it. some of the film changes but it's all really the same. it was cool to watch and see the differences and to know that they are in that moment right now. larry: dallas beat a bad tampa bay team to advance the division round. this franchise last played 27 years ago. a ton of pressure on the cowboys who come in as four underdogs. >> we are going in there to expect to win. no bones about that. i understand they have a job to do. we know the type of environment we are getting ready to go into. it will be a great environment, a huge challenge. we are hoping the dallas cowboy fans show up. we are playing a tremendous football team.
