this morning we ask pectin to hear from oakland's newly elected mayor. she will hold a news conference to talk about the city's police chief, put on administrative leave after reportedly failing to take action on a sergeant who ripped the bumper off of a neighbor's car during a hit-and-run accident. the sergeant fired a gun in an elevator at police headquarters. abc 7 news will stream the mayor's comments around 10:15 on our abc streaming apps and we will have more on this controversy coming up in our next half-hour. in berkeley, a jewish nonprofit group says two of their billboards have been defaced in a couple days. the berkeley police department is investigating it as a k -- a hate crime. this comes as documented reports of documented violence against jews are at an all-time high. tim: driver berkeley and you might see billboards like this one in hot pink with messages designed to grab people's

attention and fight back against anti-semitism. >> we have jewish resources and education for people who just want to know a little bit more. tim: she is the cofounder of jew belong. she says two of the billboards they have were vandalized after people sprayed free palestine across them. >> i believe in human rights for palestinians and israelis and for peace. tim: the group has been in contact with the police department investigating the incidents as a hate crime. >> it's ongoing and they will try to figure out -- i think they will look at cameras and things like that. tim: putting billboards aside, the most recent data from the anti-defamation league shows documented reports of violence against jews are the highest on record. in the bay area, anti-semitic flyers popped up in cities like san francisco, palo alto, and danville. but jew belong says they are

undeterred and continue to put a billboards in the bay area and around the country. >> i'm not going to go away because there are bullies painting over our billboards. we are going to put them up again and come back and be strong. tim: in san francisco, tim johns, kcra 3 news. liz: bart's board of directors will soon consider censoring one of its members over what art is calling a racist and insensitive comment. he calls something "cotton picking inspirational." the director made those comments during racial equity initiative representation. the board will also consider whether or not to remove him from committees he's currently serving on. bart's board will discuss ways to remedy their budget shortfall. some suggestions to cut costs include closing select stations, cutting wee layoffs. in san francisco, any active shooter workshop will be held

announcing this week a push to establish rival he funded safe consumption sites and the district attorney describing an all hands on deck approach. >> we are trying to intervene on every level. we have to cut supply but we also want to decrease demand because that is what will cut off supply but also help individuals change their lives, save their lives. >> nearly 107,000 americans dive a drug overdose -- died of a drug overdose in 2021 according to the cdc and 600 of those were in san francisco, the majority caused by fentanyl. >> in 2022, the dea and its law enforcement partners seized more than 50.6 million fentanyl-laced fake prescription pills. that is more than double the amount seized in 2021. >> the dea also seized more than 10,000 pounds of fentanyl powder. >> together, these seizures

bay area app and our website, kcra.com. new developments out of san francisco, the city's latino taskforces offering free lead testing for students at bonavista school. during a construction project last year, elevated levels of lead were discovered in the soil in a courtyard and multiple faucets. three screenings started yesterday at a health clinic at 24th and cap street. students and families can walk in today from 9:00 a.m. to forgot p.m.. the free screenings will be available the next two saturdays after that. in the east bay, officials at richmond high school are hoping classes will be back in session monday. schools are shut on friday because of a bad smell, an electrical burning sent a strong smell through the campus, forcing everyone out. school maintenance crews say they will spend the weekend for the cause of the smell. lisa argen, 6:08. let's get a check outside. lisa: we have enjoyed the sunshine the past couple days. more is on the way today, tomorrow, internet sweep.

embarcadero plaza. the bay is revving up for football playoffs tomorrow. the 49ers take on the cowboys at levi's stadium, kick off at 3:30. the hype is real with one of the game. they have one of the greatest rivalries in the league's history. ryan curry spoke with fans looking back on great moments. ryan: we are sitting in these iconic red seats where it all started. john faires and larry tallman can't help but think here we go again. >> it's been a never-ending saga of wanting to beat the cowboys. and reveling when we can stick it to them. >> people i know they go to the games are nervous as hell. ryan: these fans have seen it all but one matchup was always personal, the dallas cowboys. >> when the cowboys came around, whether a playoff or season, my house started bubbling, getting ready to go to these games. ryan: if you ask those 49ers

attractions are shut down. highway one, then main path in and out of the area remains closed from monterey county all the way through san simeon. it is closed south of town and most of big sur natural sites are off-limits. in the bay area, several areas remain closed until cleanup and requires are complete. the golden gate national recreation area shared these photos and the damage after a recent storm. you can find the fullest of closers on the national park website. in san francisco will remain for shut down over the weekend. point crews are working to repair the road outside the site after it was damage from the storms. officials hope to have it open next week. bear creek stables needs more water supply for their 70 horses. they have had to run on emergency water supplies since the start of the storms, for weeks, because fallen trees broke the main pipe that brings in their water. each horse drinks around 10 gallons a day.

>> we have a couple 20 gallons totes of water and those will be emptied soon and it is just people bringing it from home more bucketing it from the stream and us carrying buckets of water from the stream to each individual water trough. liz: they are usually able to make the difficult trip to the pipe to fix issues but there are so many downed trees they cannot get to it. mid-peninsula regional open space district owns the land bear creek stables operates on and they say they are trucking in thousands of gallons of water while the pipeline awaits repairs. and lisa argen, you can see how much damage there was. the facsimile parks are so closed and it is good to know because people might try to take advantage of this good weather. lisa: that's right. they say give it another week or so. we picked up 10 and 20 inches of rain from december 26 to january 17. over 30 inches in santa cruz mountains. for many locations over 50% of

pattern the next seven to 10 days. into february, looking at colder storms headed our way, not looking at a parade of atmospheric rivers, just looking at rain returning and the warming trend hopefully we will see that into about wednesday where after an highs will make it to the low 60's. we have been talking about the flooding with the king tied coming back, some parking lots, marshes along the low-lying areas and in the highlighted areas until monday, so you may run into that. so be careful headed out early this 20. a few high clouds from time to time but overall a mostly sunny day. clouds increase tonight and then they will thin out again for sunday afternoon, also into monday. several days to enjoy the sun. today the winds will be light. we notice right after the afternoon, maybe about 15 to 20 miles per hour. but a system dropping over san francisco, the bay area, to the

liz: lunar new year is tomorrow and california is the first day in the nation to make it an official holiday. chinatown has been busy with shoppers getting ready, and one of the go to shops is a bakery that's been around nearly a century. abc news anchor karina nova has the story. karina: it's hard to imagine a business that has been around for 98 years would have many secrets, but eastern bakery has its share. there's the secret recipe behind its sought-after coffee crunch cake, or its other secret recipe for moon cakes. >> do you want some?

secret that, well, is not so secret, if you listen to the owner -- great visitors. orlando quan, the oldest -- the owner of the oldest chinatown bakery speaks perfect vanish. there's a reason for the -- spanish. there's a reason for that. he was born in peru and emigrated when he was in his 20's. besides spanish, he speaks english and chinese. >> i speak two chinese styles. both are cantonese. karina: it is an immigrant success story, one that added to the mystique of chinatown, his family owning golden gate bakery. that's a bakery that makes tarts that has such erratic hours of operations that fans created a facebook page to let the public know when it's open. eastern bakery has its cult following after a 1996 speech in san francisco. then-president bill clinton popped in for a moon cake. >> looking for a moon cake, the love this we had to cut it for one. him.

one part of production is to make a ball out of the filling. then the next apartment, they make the dough and they put the filling in and you stuff the whole thing into the mold, bang bang. then it comes out round with the printing on top. karina: moon cakes are one attraction. another is the coffee crunch cake. for regulars like winston fong, it is full of flavor and nostalgia. >> my father and i would come out here and have the coffee crunch cake. the sugar, crunch, and coffee taste. those are nice memories. >> it's a secret recipe. it's chris become a very good. and on the outside, high-quality cake. karina: he's owned the bakery for 37 years and has not reopened the inside since the pandemic. instead, he greets customers from a small table at the door. after 98 years, he doesn't want

happening today, the new oakland mayor will address comments on the decision to place the police chief on leave. according to sources, armstrong is off the job for "dereliction of duty," after failing to take action on a sergeant who ripped the bumper off of a neighbors car during a hit-and-run incident and the sergeant later fired a gun in an elevator at police headquarters. former police chief ann or patrick calls a day -- an ki rkpatrick calls it a setback she filed a lawsuit disputing her termination and won. >> one of the biggest cancers is that law enforcement officers won't come forward and report misconduct. i come forward and in fired so talk about undermining the report. liz: the police department remains over federal insight which has been ongoing for 20 years following past cases of brutality and misconduct. we will be streaming the press conference later this morning around 10:00 15 a.m. and you could watch on the abc7news at.

police in oakland are looking for a suspect connected to an attempted rape, this the man police are looking for p the victim tells officers they were cornered by him at the store where they work on international boulevard. the victim fought back and got away unharmed. police described the suspect as a black man standing about 62 inches with medium length hair covering his ears. this morning, learning new details about the san francisco state student who disappeared up the coast near safeco. part of the university wrestling team. according to the chronicle, two of his friends saw a large breaker, swept him out to sea, they say this happened tuesday morning there and police say the investigation is ongoing. as storm cleanup continues around the bay area, a home it's a total loss after a landslide. the force of that ripped the house from its base and sent it sliding down a hill.

a county building inspector deemed a home unsafe wednesday so the family was not there when the slide happened. a home next door has been yellow tagged and neighbors say they are staying alert. in santa cruz, temporary traffic controls are in place along westcliff drive so crews can assess the damage to the street walkway caused by this month's storms. they will complete on emergency -- an emergency stabilization plan monday at 6:00 a.m. drivers can expect detours and one-way traffic between columbia street and woodrow avenue. after multiple mudslides and two road closures, niles canyon road is finally back open. the area mudslides have popped up across the bay area, including two at niles canyon. one of those stops service on an a strain. caltrans says drivers should be cautious and look out for debris on the road. the edd is working to improve communications to prevent fraud, after a bay area father says he he is paying the price of the agency mistake.

in 2020, ronald wong filed a fraud report with the edd after his employer said he filed for an unemployment claim in his name when he never did that. he never heard back. then without a warning, the edd confiscated the tax refund last year. the agency also paid the scammer more than $15,000 even after ronald reported the fraud. >> they used my name, my social security, but they used their address. >> it has been hard, we are a single family income with three kids. >> i got a nine-year-old and two for your old twins so kids require a lot of money. liz: ronald said the edd told them the fraud report was lost -- told him the fraud report was lost in transition after upgrading the computers. they finally did return the money. thousands of bay area residents are losing their jobs as massive layoffs in the tech industry continue. friday, yesterday, alphabet, google's parent company, announced it is cutting nearly 12,000 jobs effective immediately.

that is 6% of its workforce in the u.s.. intel is lying off workers as well. 545 jobs slashed. 200 of them are on the santa clara campus. nearly 34,000 tech jobs have been eliminated recently, according to our abc7news layout tracker -- layoff tracker. dustin dorsey spoke with a tax expert about the impact on silicon valley. dustin: once sitting atop the financial mountain during the pandemic, tech companies are feeling the effects of a return to normalcy. the bottom line for giants like meta, microsoft, and now google is forcing employees to feel the heat. >> revenue is not justifying the numbers we have. this is why you heard in 2020 two, and of 2022, this talk about how we have to work hard, evaluate people. this is an indication the company is looking very careful at the bottom line and trying to cut costs. dustin: and

and tech expert, he says those cuts start with employees. >> a lot of friends work at google so i'm worried. dustin: 12,000 employees from alphabet joined tends of thousands of employees cut as they await budget decisions for 2023. just a matter of months removed from the tech sector, hiring 200,000 plus employees, more than double the previous decade. >> during the pandemic, google increased employees by 30%. what they are doing is they are doing what i call the great reset, where they go back to the 2019 era. and even with the cuts we have, we are not even close to that and we are still above that level. dustin: he says the cuts have a trickle-down effect because thousands of employees now have less money to spend, leading to cuts in other industries. this is not permanent. employees are being hired back at other tech companies or in tech roles so this may be a temporary downswing, but this is -- but he says this is not 2008
