[ crowd chanting ] >> reporter: this morning, fallout at the memphis police department. five officers fired involved in a traffic stop that turned deadly. 29-year-old tyre nichols suffering critical injuries dying three days later. the stop for alleged reckless driving. police saying he ran off after a confrontation then another confrontation occurred when they did he tated. his family saying police beat him so severely he was unrecognizable. ben crump speaking with "gma" overnight. >> they took photographs of him in the hospital that showed him with huge contusions and abrasions on his face and head that they believe was part of the reason why tyre is dead today. that brutal encounter with the police. >> reporter: an internal police investigation concluding the officers violated department policies including excessive use

of force, duty to intervene and duty to render aid. >> their being fired means that they did something horribly wrong on that video. >> reporter: the body camera and surveillance videos are expected to be shown to nichols' family monday morning. and the video of that incident is expected to be released to the public after the nichols family takes a look at it. now, the fbi and the justice department are also conducting a civil rights investigation. eva? >> elwyn lopez for us, thank you. the department of justice launching a criminal investigation into abbott laboratory's infant formula plant in sturgis, michigan. that plant at the center of the formula shortage after contamination issues led to a shutdown and parents finding shelves empty for months. abbott says the company is cooperating fully. turning now to a "gma" health alert and the scare for

tory spelling's daughter stella. the actress sharing her 14-year-old's diagnosis after two er visits opening up on sirius xm to jeff lewis live. take a look. >> so her left arm went completely numb. she couldn't lift it. and then half of her throat and then her mouth. it was really scary. i thought she had a stroke. she's 14. i'm like how does a 14-year-old have a stroke? sounds super scary. so stella was diagnosed with a rare form of migraine called hemiplegic migraine. the "90210" star said she wasn't aware of the condition before and now stella's seeing a neurologist to continue treatment and joining us to discuss this diagnosis is neurologist dr. leah croll. thank you so much for being with us. what are symptoms of a hemiplegic migraine and what makes it different from a regular migraine? i never even heard of this before. >> thanks for having me this morning. so your typical migraine will manifest with headache, light sensitivity, maybe some visual

changes but a hemiplegic migraine can be much scarier because it actually mimics a stroke. so the main symptom that these patients get is weakness on one side of the face and body and that weakness may last for hours to days before it resolves. >> wow, and so not only are those incredibly scary symptoms but the hemiplegic migraines often onset in teens from ages 12 to 17. what should parents know if they start to see some of these symptoms? >> this is such an important question. i'm glad you asked. parents should know while migraine headaches are very common, hemiplegic migraines are quite rare. they're also more common in women than men and frequently they're genetic. so families make yourself aware of any family history of this. everyone, parent or not, needs to know that if they see someone having weakness on one side of their body, they need to get that person to the hospital right away because as we said before, hemiplegic migraine can look just like a stroke and

that's absolutely something you would not want to miss. >> absolutely and that, of course, means at any age you want to get someone to the hospital right away. what does the treatment look like for a hemiplegic migraine? >> we have a number of medications that we can use to stop a migraine attack in its tracks and we also have medications that we can use as a preventive measure in the hopes of reducing the frequency of migraine attacks. so these patients end up working very closely with their neurologist to figure out which treatment methods work best for them. >> dr. leah croll, thanks for being with us to help us learn a little more about all of this. we appreciate you. eva? well, coming up in our "gma morning menu," a new documentary about brooke shields premiering at sundance. the latest on "pretty baby" and its debut. also ahead, tiktok tax tips. we'll show you how to maximize your refund and minimize the stress of this tax season. plus, winter is here and we've called in the experts. dr. whitney bowe joins us with tips on adjusting your skin care

reporter," i did not know if or when or if at all i was ever going to bring this up. it has taken me many years of therapy to even be able to talk about it. i definitely have worked very hard through it and i've learned to process it. >> i think audiences will learn a lot about brooke shields. audiences will learn a lot about this incredibly iconic woman and will see everything they didn't know. generations who aren't aware of brook shields will still gain such insight into who brooke shields is as a person and appreciation for what she has gone through. >> reporter: shields also discussing the complex relationship with her mother saying, she's always been a very controversial figure and telling our own lara spencer in 2014 -- >> i lived with an alcoholic parent and i was an only child with her. that shaped me and so it actually became the larger character in our life even in our lives together and it even superseded hollywood or all of the sort of pitfalls of that. >> and this was the first sundance red carpet since 2019 so lots of excitement there.

of course, it's a very stressful time for a lot of people trying to get their documents in order. we know every year there are changes. so what are the big changes from 2022 that people need to know about? >> yeah, nice to see you this morning. so the biggest thing is that the standard deduction this year has gone up a couple hundred dollars. so it's now $12,950 for single filers and $25,900 for married couples. if you don't have itemized deductions more than that, just take the standard deduction. >> that's good advice. >> i was going to say the other thing is that taxable income brackets have moved slightly up so you might qualify for a lower tax rate. now you don't really have to do anything to get that lower tax rate. the tax software and your cpa should know as well. so that's a nice little benefit of last year. >> like that. we'll take the good news. what about some unexpected tax breaks this year. >> yeah. so some unexpected tax breaks

that you might not know about is something like mortgage interest. you can get -- you can deduct mortgage interest off of your tax return and so that will reduce your taxable income and there are some other things you can deduct as well such as, you know, property taxes or some medical and dental expenses as well. >> a lot of talk about the child tax credit. what do people need to know there? >> yeah, so in 2021 with the american rescue act, i believe it was called, the tax credit temporarily went up to $3,600 per child. but this tax year, 2022 it returns back to $2,000. so that's back to the 2019 level. now there are some methods if you missed out on the $3,600 tax credit of 2021. you may still be able to get that if you file an amended return. >> so that's -- okay, just to be clear, if you think you got it and you're entitled to it, you need to file that amended return. about doing that?u have to go - >> you get three years following

the date of your original return to amend the return and so that means if you forgot to get the child tax credit for 2021 or you tink you missed out on it you have three years to amend it. >> what about overall, are there some ways that we can still reduce our taxable income from last year? >> yeah, so i think the biggest one is that if you haven't contributed to an i.r.a., you have until tax day this year so april 18th, 2023 to contribute for the previous year. so that means if you're under the age of 50 you can contribute up to $6,000 to your i.r.a. for 2022. over the age of 50 you can contribute up to $7,000 to reduce your taxable income by that amount and that's actually a pretty big tax deduction that will also serve you for retirement if you're interested in that. >> all right. thank you so much. humphrey yang, we always appreciate the tips. good luck, everybody. we're just the messengers.

actually a five-night cycle and it's a really good place to start if you're new to skin cycling. >> walk us through the steps. >> night one is exfoliation night. what you want to do, cleanse, then you want to apply a leave-on exfoliating product. so ideally you want one that's going to -- here, you want to feel it. you want it to feel hydrating on the skin and be clinically tested on sensitive skin. that's really important during the winter. it's got acids in it. they are actually more gentle than the scrubs, right, but you never want the acid to burn. so you want to look for like, for example, this one has 2% salicylic acid. that's excellent for oilier acne prone skin. this one has a 12% blend of glycolic acid and will not only unclog the pores but helps brighten dark spots. it helps firm up the skin for fine lines and wrinkles over time. so you pick one, only use one. >> just one. don't do too many at the same

time. >> wait for a couple minutes to absorb then you apply a lightweight moisturizer on top, and that's it. very simple. less is more. >> step two. >> so step two, night two is retinoid night. they include over the counter ingredients like retinol but prescription strength retinol. if you can tolerate it multiple nights a week during the winter and you're not getting any dryness or irritation, then you do you. most of my patients struggle with using one during the winter. here's a pro tip. do a retinoid sandwich. first apply a lightweight, thin layer of a moisturizer, then you want to put on your retinoid and then you go back and put on another layer of your moisturizer and create a sandwich and that first layer buffers the retinoid. gets you through the winter. >> then the next nights are about recovery. >> recovery night, the classic four-night cycling is two push

nights followed by two recovery nights. during the winter you may want to add extra recovery nights because that really gives your skin barrier extra love. so first you cleanse, then you apply a moisturizer. so with the moisturizer want to look for one that has squalene, ceramides, hyaluronic acid, one clinically proven to repair the skin barrier. so put that on. during the summer that's all you need. during the winter you may want to add an extra step on top to seal in the moisture. >> that's why you have this vaseline here. >> slugging, so slugging is adding a layer of petroleum jelly on top of your moisturizer. great for recovery nights if you have dry skin, not so great if you're acne prone. if you're acne prone, then i recommend looking for a recovery balm which actually is very similar. it goes on top of the moisturizer but not so heavy and doesn't break you out but seals in that extra moisture. >> and you know what for someone like me who always has acne problems this is the way to go, but you can still do this.
