through the freeze warning which is about to expire. a storm track is to the north and the wind has been light allowing for some cold numbers. the golden gate bridge and a bit of a breeze. 42, oakland. below freezing in santa clara. looking at more sunshine and a bit below average with temperatures at about 7:00 -- seven to nine degrees below average. 40, napa. a good recovery with concord and livermore. seven degrees colder in livermore. it is going to be a gorgeous day, still a little cooler. we will still get to 60's later in the week. increasing wind tomorrow and when the rain does return. liz: this morning we are expecting to hear from -- expected to hear from oakland mayor's to talk about the paris

-- about the police chief. he has been put on administrative leave after failing to take action on a sergeant who ripped the bumper off of a neighbor's car. sergeant later fired a gun in the elevator at police headquarters. the city council president released a statement on the mayor's handling of the issue writing in part "i support her leadership to ensure the safety of our community and to build trust and confidence between the oakland police department and the public." abc 7 will be streaming the mayor's comments on the streaming apps. in berkeley, a jewish nonprof group says that two of their billboards have been defaced. the berkeley police department is investigating this is a hate crime. as tim johns reports this comes as documented reports of harassment and violence are the highest on record. tim: drive along the streets of berkeley and you might see billboards like this one in hot

pink with messages designed to grab attention in a bid to fight back against anti-semitism. >> we have jewish resources and education for people who just want to know more. j.r.: she is -- tim: she is a cofounder of jew along. two billboards were after the phrase free palestine was a part -- was scrawled a product -- across them. >> i believe in human rights for israelis and palestinians and for peace. tim: the police department has been investigating them as a police crime -- as h they will t cameras and things like that. tim: putting the billboards aside the data from the anti-defamation league shows that harassment and violence against jews are the highest on record. antisemitic liars have popped up

in san francisco, and palo alto. but they remain undetermined -- undeterred and plan on putting up billboards here and around the country. >> i am not going to go away who are -- because of bullies painting over our billboards. we will put them up again and come back and be strong. tim: in san francisco, tim johns -- tim johns. liz: the board of directors will consider censuring one of the mend -- one of the members. he called something "cotton picking inspirational." the director made those comments during a rake will at -- a racial equity presentation and they will consider whether to remove him from committees he is serving on. the board will discuss ways to remedy the budget shortfall. low ridership since the pandemic has severely impacted services which rely on fair revenue. -- fare revenue.

their lives and save their lives. >> nearly 107,000 americans died of a drug overdose in 2021. 625 of those deaths were in san francisco. the majority caused by fentanyl. >> in 2022, the dea and its law enforcement partners deceived 60 point -- 60 million fentanyl sake prescription pills and that is double the amount of 2021. >> the dea seized 10,000 pounds of fentanyl powder. >> these seizures represent more than 379 million deadly doses of fentanyl. that much fentanyl could kill every single american. >> the numbers show a similar situation and san francisco. in the last two years 12 times the amount of fentanyl has been

free screening yesterday at a health clinic at 24th and cap street. students and families can walk in from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. and they will also be available the next two saturdays after that. officials at with -- at richmond high school will be back on monday after the school shut down because of a bad smell. an electrical burning sent a strong smell to the main campus focusing -- forcing everyone out. maintenance crews will look for the cause of the smell. fremont police are holding a gun buyback event for every handgun, rifle, and shotgun and $200 for any shotgun or ghost gun. it is limited to $600 total per person. they should not be loaded. officers will come by and take them from the trunk of your car. it runs from 10:00 until 3:00. let us get a check outside on this chilly saturday morning. lisa: it really is.

constitution right to an abortion after the supreme court overturned roe v. wade. people on both sides of the debate are planning protests. >> it is clear that virginians want fewer abortions, not more. >> they overwhelmingly support roe and legal access to abortion. liz: vice president kamala harris plans to speak in florida about the issue and she will focus her remarks on the fight for reproductive rights on the state level. there are demonstrations happening for each side at home as well. abortion rights activists will march starting at 11:30 this morning on the federal burton federal building until the civic certain -- until the civic center. those participants will start at the civil -- the second -- the civic center and then walked to embarcadero plaza. it will be a beautiful weekend but think twice before heading

down to big sur. a large portion of the beaches, hiking trails and highway one is shut down. this is from monterey county all the way down to san simeon and south of the town and most of the sites are off-limits. several areas also remain closed until cleanup and repairs are complete including stinson beach . the golden gate national recreation area showed the photos of the damage. you can find the full list of closures on the national parks website. ford polar dashboard point remains closed. they are working to repair the storm after the latest storm. they hope to have it open next week. the bay area is revving up for more football. 49ers take on the dallas cowboys and kickoff is at 3:30. the 49ers and cowboys have one

candlestick park and they lost that game, and they lost the nfc championship game at candlestick. ryan: fast forward 10 years and everything changed with the catch. they saw the 49ers turn into the top team. >> when clark made the catch the place erupted. everybody was going crazy, the game was almost over and we are ahead. >> it is time for these two to witness the next chapter in the cowboys saga. this time with a new young quarterback leading them. >> i am convinced we are going to win because we have a better team. liz: lisa as we talked about the game we can also talk about the weather. dry and pretty nice, just bring a jacket. lisa: the second half will be dark and we are looking at these temperatures dropping off. for the game, in the upper 50's. 3:30 and high clouds and then temperatures drop off through the afternoon.

it looks like a gorgeous day tomorrow. a week storm system passes to the east of us with some breezy wind. today we have been seeing high pressure in control deflecting the storm track. except up towards washington and seattle with some rain. here is another look at the bridge. 44 downtown and 42, oakland. 40, san jose. very chilly, santa clara. santa cruz was in the now we are beginning to see the temperatures in the low 40's. 39, novato with 40 napa and fairfield with upper 30's. a gorgeous view of the cove and all of the snow. a busy weekend in tahoe. any new snow we see coming to the beginning of february, so we have at least seven dry days may be eking that out to nine or 10.

chilly baying and cool. the dry pattern will it last -- the dry pattern will last weekend and a return to some 60's. the coastal flood advisory continues as the king tides are back. 7.16 feet is what we can expect. the high tides are creating some flooding around bill valley, the parking lots and the marshes. here is a look at the sunny day with the clouds tonight, a few high clouds for tonight and a sunny day on monday. 10 to 15 mile an hour wind. overnight they get pretty gusty along the coast and that leads to a breezy gusty afternoon. 11:00 we are looking at wind gusts over 20 to 30 miles an hour and then as we look at the beach hazard statement this takes us through tomorrow afternoon and the wave heights are already coming up to over seven feet.

and california is the first state in the nation to make it an official holiday. chinatown has been busy with shoppers getting ready for the vicinities. one of the go to shops is a bakery that has been around a century. karina nova has the story. karina: it is hard to imagine that a business that has been for around 98 years would have secrets, but eastern bakery has a chair. there is a secret recipe behind the coffee crunch cake, or the other secret recipe for the famous moon cakes. but there is another secret that is not so secret if you listen to the owner greet visitors. that is right, orlando, the owner of the oldest chinatown bakery speaks perfect spanish. >> thank you. karina: he was born in peru and

emigrated when he was in his 20's. >> i am here now. karina: besides spanish he speaks english and chinese. >> i speak two dialects in cantonese. karina: it is an immigrant success story adding to the mystique of chinatown. they opened cold and gate bakery that makes such delicious egg custard tarts that have such erratic hours of operation that fans created a facebook page just to let the public know when it is open. eastern bakery also has its own cult following. after a 1996 speech bill clinton popped in for a moon cake. >> they are looking for the moon cake and we had it for him and he ate it. good, and loved it. the most powerful man in the whole world came to visit you, and ate the best of the best moon cake. karina: the moon cakes are what make eastern bakery standout.

they are traditionally eaten during the mid autumn festival, kind of a chinese thanksgiving. >> when you go to china you do not get this quality of moon cake. we have the lotus shape, and we have a secret recipe. >> the baker has the recipe and when he starts mixing the filling he kicks everyone out and he only has one assistant with him because he does not want anyone to know the process. karina: in the 1960's david work at eastern bakery for the original owner and he remembers lines of workers making moon cakes. >> we had about 30 people around a big table. one part of the production is to make a ball out of the filling. and then the next apartment made the -- next to department made the dough and you put the and then you stuff the whole thing into the mold, bang, bang and

then it comes out round with the printing on top. karina: moon cakes are one attraction and then the coffee crunch cake. it is full of flavor and nostalgia. >> my father and i would come out here and have the coffee crunch cake. the sugar and the crunch in the coffee taste, it is a nice memory. >> it is a secret recipe. it is crispy and good and there is candy on the outside. karina: he has owned eastern bakery for 37 years and has not reopened the inside of the store since the pandemic began. instead he greets customers from a table at the door. after 98 years he does not want to think about what will happen he calls equates. >> when is ok, i am trying my best to stay here as long as possible. karina: here is next to his

>> building a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions, this is abc 7 news. liz: now chief controversy continues. today zhang tao will give -- sheng tao will give her first comments on chief armstrong being placed on administrative leave. we will get to that story in a moment but first let us get a quick look at the weather and the freeze warning. we are seeing issues of black ice and people need to be careful. lisa: that expired a few minutes ago and temperatures are recovering. the coldest temperatures arrive after sunrise at 725 so about an hour ago. right now with 44, san francisco that is warmer than it has been.

at 52, half moon bay. 42, palo alto. you are down to around freezing and another look outside from the city where you have mid 30's santa rosa and in the inland east bay where it wrought -- where it was frosty. six to 11 degrees colder with high clouds clearing out through the morning. that will be replaced with plenty of sun and low 50's arriving. we are also going to be talking about the coastal flood advisory along the bayshore because we have that and some very high waves to speak of throughout the weekend. we will detail that in a few minutes. liz: oakland mayor sheng tao will make her first comments on the decision to play -- to place chief armstrong on leave. armstrong is off the job for " dereliction of duty" after he failed to take action on a sergeant who ripped the bumper off of a neighbor's car.

that sergeant later fired a gun in an elevator at police headquarters. the former police chief ann kirkpatrick calls this a setback. she was fired in 2020 for reporting this conduct and she disputed her termination and won. >> one of the biggest cancers in law enforcement is the issue that officers will not come forward and report misconduct. i come forward and report misconduct and i am fired for it. you talk about undermining reform. liz: the police department remains under federal oversight which has been going on 20 years because of past cases of misconduct and police brutality. we will be streaming her remarks at around 10:15. police in oakland are looking for a suspect connected to an attempted rape. this is the man, and the victim tells officers that they were cornered at the store where they work on international boulevard. the victim fought back and got

away unharmed. police described the victim -- the suspect as a black man with medium length hair. we are learning new details about the san francisco state student who disappeared your specific up -- near pacifica. police have identified him. he has a sophomore and as part of the university's wrestling team. two of his friends saw a large breaker sweep him out to sea thursday morning. the investigation is ongoing. as storm cleanup continues a home is a total loss after a landslide. the force of that ripped the house from the base and sent it sliding down a hill. a building inspector deems the home unsafe so the family was not there when the slide happened. a home next door has been yellow tagged and neighbors are staying alert. temporary traffic controls are in place along westcliff drive

so that crews can assess the damage caused by the storms. they will cleave -- they will complete an emergency stabilization plan. drivers can expect detours and one-way traffic between columbia street and woodrow avenue. after multiple mudslides and two road closures niles canyon road is back open. various mudslides have popped up including two at niles canyon. one of those stopped service on and a strain. caltrans writers should look out for debris on the road. edd says it is working on improving communications to better prevent fraud and this comes after a father says he is paying the price of the agency's mistake. ronald wong after his employer said he filed for an unemployment claim in his name when he never did. he never heard back in without a

warning they confiscated their tax return last year. the agency also paid the scammer $15,000 even after ronald reported the fraud. >> they used my name, my social security, but they use their address. >> it has been hard for a single-family income with three kids. we have a nine-year-old and 24-year-old twins and kids require a lot of money. liz: they told him the fraud report was lost in transition after it upgraded the computer system. they finally did return the money. thousands of bay area residents are losing their jobs as massive layoffs in the tech industry continue. alphabet announced cutting nearly 12,000 jobs effective immediately in the u.s., 6% of its workforce. intel is laying off workers, 545 jobs. 100 are at the santa clara campus.

nearly 34,000 have been eliminated according to our abc 7 layoff tracker. dustin dorsey spoke with the tech experts about the impact on silicon valley. just -- dustin: one sitting atop of the financial mountain, tech companies are feeling the effects of a return to normalcy, the bottom line for meta, microsoft and google are forcing employees to feel the heat. >> the revenue is not justifying the numbers which is why you heard in that 2022 use talks about we have to work hard and evaluate people. it is an indication that the company is looking very carefully at the bottom line and trying to cut costs. dustin: this professor says that those cuts start with employees. >> a lot of friends work at google so i am worried about them. i am afraid to call them. dustin: 12,000 employees from alphabet joins the tens of thousands recently cut from companies across silicon valley

as they way budget decisions. just a matter of months removed from the tech sector hiring 2000 plus employees, double the previous decade. >> during the pandemic google increase the number of employees by 30%. what they are doing is what i call the great reset where they will go back to the 2019 era. even with the cuts that we have we are not close to that. dustin: these cuts have a trickle-down effect because thousands of employees have less money to spend leading to cuts in other industries but this is not permanent. employers are being hired in other tech companies or roles so this might be a temporary downswing but this is not 2000 date or the.com era and it will not slow down the prominence. >> we have hundreds of companies and silicon valley has never been defined by one company. it is defined by the product and innovation.

liz: and despite all of the layoffs data shows that san francisco and santa clara county's unemployment rates fell to 2%. jobs went up by 4500 compared to the previous month. professional and business services saw the biggest growth gaining more jobs in the tech sector loss. industries also include trade transportation, utilities, finances, private education and health services. liz: the city of san francisco is hosting a job fair. employers like the fire department, shares office and apartment t -- and the apartment of homeless and civil housing is there. two more scheduled for the next saturdays. still ahead, a revival for the gaming world. >> just spectators, people that come to watch their favorite players and personalities and it is nice to see every year that it gets bigger and bigger. liz: how genesis nine is giving

lisa: here is a gorgeous life view from the sutro tower -- sutro tower camera. a gorgeous view over the city and the bay. liz: the university of california plans to extend outreach to the community colleges after a joint task force between the uc and community college system recommended that uc increase the number of transfer students who apply. campuses are expected to spend $2.5 million for the student academic preparation partnership to enroll at one california community college transfer for every two california resident freshman.

san francisco businesses will need to pay a fee to keep their part lets, but many are choosing to close our outdoor spaces. the owner of portofino opened his restaurant a month before the pandemic and he says it gave them 30 extra seats to help them say open. >> that is my -- that is my lifeline and it is a convenience for us and the customer. and it is a nice little traction and it looks more european. liz: starting april the city will charge $3000 to license a parking space in 1500 for any additional space and $2000 per spot. although there are waivers for some, a decline in applications shows that some businesses will not take on the costs. really pretty outside. lisa: it is, but do you want to guess how cold it is? 14. going for a high today of 36. maybe next weekend some snow,

there is a look at the coast of flood advisory with coal still tied through monday very low tide this afternoon at about 5:15. and occurring in the next 30 minutes or so with a high tide at 7.16 feet. all of these areas with low letting flooding. a heads up for that and a look at the clear sky today. tonight we get clouds with a weak system that thins over the day on sunday with more son into monday. the wind will shift and allow for some pretty gusty wind along the coast as soon as late tonight. early tomorrow is when we have the strongest wind. 30 to 34 miles an hour and then the rest of the bay area gets breezy as well. this is 11:00 with 26 mile an hour wind from oakland to fremont and bedded that out by the delta and they keep breeze, the afternoon will keep it
