joining us. you are watching abc seven news at 11. a homeless man is dead tonight after catching fire in a santa rosa parking lot. it all happened along santa rosa avenue not far from highway 101. as abc seven news reporter reports police believe the deadly opioid fentanyl was involved. >> josé pacheco is pointing to where a homeless man caught fire and died early saturday morning in santa rosa. he sighed this dumpster. >> i found it pretty surprising

because it happened right in our backyard right here out of nowhere you know? >> reports of a fire in this parking off of santa rosa avenue began coming in after midnight. >> when officers arrid theye fi, roughly 35 to 40 years old. it looks like he had accidentally set himself on fire. >> this sergeant is the spokesperson it for the santa rosa police department and says they have been able to piece together some of what happened using surveillance video. >> the individual we believe to be homeless was using a narcotic and used a lighter, immediately slumped down and laid on the ground. >> based on the man's response he was likely using fentanyl, the powerful opioid fueling the bay area -- drug crisis in the bay area. >> he had some crystal gels in his backpack that are used

keep warm. >> and when the man lit the drug they believe the residue of those caught fire. >> that residue probably heated up and smoldered on his clothing and turned into a flame while he was asleep. >> this as sonoma county clears a homeless encampment, temporarily closing part of this trail down. while the city of santa rosa works to help the on housed. >> our goal regularly with the downtown enforcement team is to get them into permanent supportive housing so that hopefully even if they are using narcotics and something goes wrong they are in a safe environment and these accidents will take place. >> tara campbell abc 7 news. >> in the north bay a woman died after she crashed her tesla into a backyard pool in san rafael this morning. police say she was driving down a point san pedro wrote it when she swerved through a fence into the pool. officers rescued her from her

vehicle but she did not survive, the reason for the crash is still not known at this time, we are working to find out if the car's autopilot feature was engaged. we will bring you more details as we get them. for the first time we are hearing from oakland's new mayor about the decision to place a police chief on administrative leave. the mayor said she learned about the investigation into the chief's alleged error election of duty moments before it was released to the public. abc seven news reporter cornell barnard was that the news conference today and tells us what could be next for the chief. >> i have heard rumors like people saying this is going to be the end of chief leronne armstrong. >> oakland's new mayor began by separating fact from fiction speaking for the first time about the decision to place the police chief on paid administrative leave for alleged dereliction of duty. >> our goal here is not to be punitive this is not a disciplinary action this is an opportunity to more fully review

women's march kicked off their rally in san francisco this morning. demonstrators also abortion rights and rise up for the fundamental rights of women and girls. >> the rally comes just a day before the 50th anniversary of roe v. wade which was overturned by the supreme court in june of last year. passengers will notice some changes when they use parts 19th st station in oakland. federal and local leaders joined transit officials today for a ceremony to mark the completion of station upgrades. those changes are designed to expand capacity, reduce crowding, save energy and make it more difficult for people to

skip paying the fare. on the comfort side the station has also renovated public restrooms and an additional elevator. there is also a redesigned concourse with energy efficient led lights and public art installations. lawmakers at today's event say there is also one huge benefit for writers. >> also increases opportunity on average a household can save approximately $10,000 annually by taking public transit. >> additionally, our transit is essential to deal with the existential problem of the climate crisis. >> the renovation process started back in 2014 with the bulk of the construction completed late last year. moving on to developing news, a massive search today took place near san miguel in san luis obispo county for a boy who was swept away by floodwaters. five-year-old kyle doan has been missing for nearly two weeks in the sheriff's office today

in 2021i reported on their first wrap which was their way to speak out against the attacks on asian americans. these sassy seniors are back just in time for the lunar new year with a new song called that lunar cheer. a group of women made up of women in their 60's through their 80's teamed up with the nonprofit aarp and rapper adjacent shoe on the project. celebrating hip hop's 50th anniversary and empowering those of any age. i just want to be as cool as they are when i am they are age. >> we should make her own wrap in 10 or 20 years. right now we are tracking a system that's moving, it's going to be heading through our area and all it's going to do is bring us increasing winds and cloud cover. you can see it here with the satellite radar looping over the last few hours so this extra cloud cover is going to keep temperatures a little more mild overnight and it will still be chilly but not quite as cold. right now under mostly cloudy conditions but it is dry out

there. it will be dry for quite some time, a live view as we look out from the east bay hills. you can see some of the city lights their sparkling in san francisco and sparkling, oak loaf -- oakland 44 palo alto in the human santa clara are in the upper 40's. this time we are checking out the san jose airport with more temperatures for you, you can see it's going to be cool and santa rosa also down to 39 right now. we will find low 40's through novato napa concord and livermore at 40°. as we show you a live shot you can notice the cameras bouncing a bit because of the wind you can see the bay bridge, traffic was such a mess in san francisco today and tomorrow will be very busy. a chilly overnight but tomorrow is going to be another beautiful sunny day but windy especially in the afternoon as the winds pick up from the north. we are going to see a dry pattern over the next seven days but with the sunshine, high-pressure building and temperatures will be warming up during the middle of next week.

just slightly above average you might even see some mid 60's. there is a coastal flood advisory all the way through monday afternoon, so for the low lying areas we could see some minor coastal flooding around the bay and at the beaches in usual spots especially during high tide which is near midday on sunday and monday. beach hazards also in effect and it's a little dangerous for surfing conditions with the increased risk of bigger waves and strong rip currents. also a long run up for northwest facing beaches. winds will pick up and that's why there is a wind advisory from 1:00 all the way till monday morning at seven, so gusts up to 45 miles per hour and at the peaks we could even see gusts reaching 50 to 60 miles per hour. this is a little hazardous for trees once again and power lines, you can see the wind forecast and the offshore flows mainly coming from the north generally 20 even 30 miles an

hour. at half moon bay at around 37 miles per hour tomorrow night in those conditions will stay windy overnight through monday morning. tonight our those will be into the 30's tonight and low 40's, just not quite as cold. tomorrow with sunshine and windy conditions, temperatures will be generally in the upper 50's, 58 in san francisco and oakland and even in san jose. if you are headed to the game it will be 58 and sunny and calling down to near 50 by the time the game ends. here is the accuweather 7-day forecast, lots of celebrations for the lunar new year tomorrow it's going to be gorgeous. it starts off cold but it will be windy and the winds will continue through monday. check out some mid 60's around thursday it will be the warmest day of the week. inland areas and even 60's at the beaches and around the bay. >> while i still can't get used to it we have been so used to rain. >> there are so many people out today just ready to be outdoors and tired from all the rain. >> enjoy it while you can.

>> more classified documents have been found in president biden's home in delaware and a search by the department of justice. fbi agent spent more than 12 hours yesterday looking through the home and according to mr. biden's personal lawyer, some of the items date back to when he served in the senate and when he was vice president. agents also took handwritten notes, a special counsel has been appointed to handle the investigation. the memphis police department has fired five officers after a traffic stop turn deadly. this announcement comes days after the family of tyree is expected to view body cam footage of the incident. here is abc news reporter

community in morning after tyree nichols died following a confrontation with memphis police. >> everywhere there is justice there is always the possibility of injustice. that is an justice is supposed to mean righteousness. but even for the best of us there's the worst of us. >> 29-year-old nichols suffered critical injuries and died january 10. three days after he was stopped for alleged reckless driving, police say he ran off after a confrontation with officers and then a second confrontation took place when they detained him. nichols family and attorneys say he was unrecognizable. >> they took photographs of him in the hospital. that showed him with contusions and abrasions on his face and head. that they believe was part of the reason why he is dead today.

that brutal encounter with police. >> an internal investigation states they officers violated department policies including excessive use of force, duty to intervene and duty to render aid. in a statement the memphis police department says it is committed to protecting and defending every rights of every sitting in our city. the egregious incident is not a reflection of the good worker officers perform with integrity every day. on monday morning nichols family is expected to be shown body camera and surveillance video of the incident. nichols cause of death has not been released the fbi and justice department has opened a civil rights investigation. the tennessee bureau of investigation also conducting its own probe. abc 7 news atlanta. >> developing news now out of atlanta were protests over plans to build a police training center after violent -- a police car was set on fire and people have been setting breaks and

setting off fireworks. several businesses have been damaged in the chaos and a number of protesters have been arrested. tensions have been high since a protester was shot and killed at a proposed training center site earlier this week. new details on the snowplow accident that seriously injured actor jeremy renner today he said it resulted in 30 broken bones. the avengers star posted a photo on instagram showing him undergoing physical therapy, he turned 52 in the hospital and is finally home after undergoing two surgeries and spending two weeks in the intensive care unit. investigators say he was crushed under a large snow cat near his home when he attempted to get back into the vehicle after it started to roll away. we turned out to that lucky escape for one lucky pup. aia oflerks ta homele g samaritan and an apple air tag he is now home safe.

>> one-year-old australian shepherd pup found wet and frightened at the bottom of the san bernardino storm drain after being swept away by floodwaters monday. the dog's owner emily quickly calling 911. >> i don't see him anymore. >> tell me what happened. >> there is a hole in the fence along the bike path, he got away from me in the water was going so fast all it took was one paul in the water and he was gone. >> gone but not lost, the dogs apple air tag's emily and her husband tracked the dog's location and then a good samaritan who was living in a nearby tent spotting the dog in the water and flagging down a passing fire truck. >> he goes i started running and lost visual and then heard him barking. he made his way from the river into that tube somehow. >> firefighters rescuing the dog from the drain after a quick ride in the truck and a joyful reunion.
