critical matchups. good morning, america. we begin with that breaking news overnight, sadly another mass shooting to report to you. this time just outside of los angeles. >> a gunman opening fire after celebrations at a lunar new year festival n monterey park. >> the shooting reportedly taking place at a business nearby. there are reports of multiple fatalities. abc's matt rivers is in monterey park with more. matt, good morning. >> reporter: this is very much an evolving situation here. officials say at least ten people have been killed and at least ten have been injured at this shooting. many of them injured in critical condition. this as the suspect remains on the loose. this morning, at least ten people dead and another ten injured in a mass shooting in california near the site of a large celebration for the lunar new year. >> approximately ten deceased.

-- >> reporter: now we know that president biden has been briefed on this. the fbi is also here assisting local law enforcement in this investigation. so far though, no word on a mote -- motive behind this shooting. >> we'll be following that all day long. matt rivers there, thank you so much. now we want to get to more breaking news overnight. fbi conducting a voluntary search of the president's delaware home. the justice department saying investigators found six more items including documents with classified markings. abc white house correspondent maryalice parks is at the white house with more. maryalice, good morning to you. more documents. >> reporter: janai, just an extraordinary development. a sitting president offering up his home to be searched, the biden team saying that investigators were given free rein to look at files going back decades. for more than 12 hours friday, department of justice officials conducting a remarkable search of president biden's home.

biden's personal lawyer saying federal investigators seized six items including some documents with classified markings from biden's time as senator as well as vice president. they took personal handwritten notes from the vice presidential years for further review. in a new statement, the president's lawyer writing, we offered to provide prompt access to his home to allow doj to conduct a search of the entire premises for potential vice presidential records and potential classified materials. adding, it was a thorough search of all the materials in the president's wilmington home. and covered all working, living and storage spaces. doj confirming the search was, quote, planned. and consensual. this disclosure the latest in a series of disclosures that have left the president on the defensive. >> i think you'll find there's nothing there. i have no regrets. following what the lawyers told me they want me to do.

>> reporter: the white house arguing that the fact authorized such a search friday shows how he's cooperating fully with the justice department's ongoing investigation. >> he's not resisting an investigation. he's not stonewalling. he's offering total cooperation with the justice department as this proceeds. and that's because of an important reason -- he takes this seriously. he takes classified information seriously. >> reporter: while biden's legal team was present for the search, neither the president nor the first lady were there. the white house punting when asked. >> i'd refer you to the white house counsel office. >> reporter: now, the president's personal lawyer said in his statement that the doj asked that the search not be made public in advance and they agreed. the white house has faced such intense criticism for not disclosing more about these documents sooner but they're trying to balance cooperating with investigators with transparency with the public. janai. >> lot of questions about that transparency. maryalice, there's another big

story from the white house this morning. a major change in the west wing. >> that's right. we know now from the sources that the current white house chief of staff ron klain plans to steps down in the coming weeks. the white house at this point is declining to comment. the shakeup is coming. the exact timing is not yet known. while the president is facing this tough situation with the documents investigation and the special counsel appointed i will say that the timing isn't surprising. the white house just met its two--year mark, halfway point in this presidency. through the midterms and everyone is expecting in the next few days and weeks, the president will make his final decision and announcement whether he'll seek re-election. janai. >> we'll be watching that shakeup for when it does happen. now we want to bring in abc's martha raddatz who will be hosting "this week" later this morning. this was an unprecedented move by the president to essentially give over free rein for

investigators to search his home. before that, a new poll out this morning, done before those developments overnight, what does that new poll say about the public opinion about the biden's handling of these classified documents? >> well, it's not good. 34% believe it's appropriate. 64% believe it's inappropriate. more think what donald trump did was inappropriate but this is not a good look for joe biden. >> not at all. 64%. then obviously since then giving over that unprecedented access to his home, but give us an idea of how people are feeling about former president trump's handling of classified papers. do they think it's the same, one worse than the other? >> they think it's worse for president trump, search warrant, fbi officials descended on mar-a-lago. president biden gave his permission for these doj investigators to go into this

house, but this is all may be blurred with the public. not legally, politically it's a mess. remember, president biden just on thursday said there's no there there. also, those documents have been there a lot longer than donald trump had them. >> to learn about that new search overnight. all right, more that, thank you so much. we'll tune in later this morning to "this week." martha raddatz will interview representative michael mccaul and senator chris coons about the latest military aid to ukraine. and the debate in congress over raising the debt ceiling. the city of memphis now bracing for reaction from release of police body camera footage of a traffic stop. the man arrested, dying later in a hospital. his family members expected to view the footage tomorrow. abc's ike ejiochi is here with more.

ike, good morning. >> reporter: this traffic stop has rocked the city of memphis. now that the five police officers have been fired, people want to know exactly what happened that night that 29-year-old was pulled over. now the family just a day away from watching those body camera and surveillance videos. this all started two weeks ago when officers pulled tyre nichols over for reckless driving. that's when investigators said two confrontations took place. people say nichols complained of having shortness of breath. the 29-year-old died in the hospital just three days later. memphis police department's investigation found that the officers involved violated multiple department policies. including excessive use of force, duty to intervene. as well as duty to render aid. now a cause of death hasn't been released. video of the incident they're expected to be released to the public as soon as the family review it. now to the violent night in atlanta. the protests over the fatal

police shooting of an activist erupting into chaos. abc's elwyn lopez is in atlanta with the latest. >> reporter: overnight, chaos erupting in downtown atlanta. firecrackers set ablaze. >> this police car in flames. police arresting six people. the protest against a new police training center and the killing of an environmental activist started peacefully but took a turn when some rioters smashed windows and set a cruiser on fire. >> a group inside that crowd decided to start committing illegal acts which included 6 breaking windows and attacking police cruisers that were in the area. >> reporter: at least three businesses damaged before authorities restored order. this just days after officers shot and killed a protester in the forest where the training center will be built.

demonstrators had okay pid occupied it for months. authorities say that protester shot first but fellow environmental activists claim it was peaceful and unfairly attacked. >> we continue to protect the right of peacefully protest. we won't tolerate violence or property destruction. >> reporter: no officers or citizens were injured. the atlanta mayor saying that several of those arrested were from out of state. the governor here saying that those crimes won't be tolerated and will be fully prosecuted. turning overseas now to the war in ukraine. u.s. officials revealing the staggering number of casualties among russian forces as kyiv is renewing its calls to the west to send tanks. abc's matt gutman is in ukraine with the latest this morning. matt, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, janai. behind me you can see this memorial for ukrainian soldiers. now neither side listing their number of casualties, but u.s. officials now saying there have

48 cents. postal officials say that we can expect a price increase twice a year moving forward. we start this half hour with a look at a high-profile murder trial getting under way tomorrow. jury selection slated to start in south carolina for alex murdaugh, once a prominent lawyer, now accused of double murder. this week, disgraced south carolina attorney alex murdaugh will go to trial accused in the brutal murders of his wife and son. >> there are still a lot of unanswered questions. >> reporter: this morning, a glimpse of what's to come in the trial. prosecutors adding google and snapchat representatives to their witness list. murdaugh's son paul reportedly sent a snapchat video to his friends just hours before his murder. meanwhile, the defense filing a motion to block blood spatter evidence from the trial. >> the prosecution expert didn't find blood spatter on the shirt.

but he says he then did a different kind of testing and was able to find it. >> reporter: it was june of 2021 when alex murdaugh made a 911 call claiming he found his wife and their 22-year-old son shot to death outside the family hunting lodge. >> my name is alex murdaugh. please hurry.a soutcaliand ju t murders. at his indictment hearing murdaugh pleading not guilty. prosecutors said that murdaugh murdered his family to try to gain sympathy to distract from financial crimes. he's accused of stealing more than $8.5 million from more a dozen victims. friends, family and clients of his family law firm. >> they're going to have to have specific evidence linking him to that scene. proof beyond a reasonable doubt not that he was up to no good but that he actually murdered his wife and son. >> and jury selections start monday, with opening arguments to follow this later week.

they're seeking life without parole if he's convicted. >> murdaugh was a prominent attorney in the area, how difficult will it be to seat a jury? >> he comes from a very well-known family in that area. pretty much everyone knows who his family is. this is the jury questionnaire. it's 40-plus questions in it. it asks questions about your connection to law enforcement to how you come to your own personal beliefs. that will play a big role in how they seat this jury. >> so interesting. thank you. now to a disturbing update about the teacher that was allegedly shot by her 6-year-old student. word there that there may have been missed warning signs about athool safety, plus, we're ith classroom. abc's mona kosar abdi is here

with more. >> reporter: that substitute teacher said she was assigned to the same class where the incident allegedly took place. because of her experience she decided she would not return to that school again. this morning only on "gma," a substitute teacher who filled in for first grade teacher abigail zwerner is now speaking it out. >> i knew it was abby. when they said a first grade teacher was shot. oh, my gosh, that was the class i was in. >> reporter: she taught in september, in the same classroom where the police say the 6-year-old took his mother's ir 25-year-old teacher. holliday remembers being overwhelmed by the chaos of the classroom. >> i got to the point where i couldn't teach. they were screaming, they were fighting.

>> reporter: multiple sources telling abc news that zwerner had been trying to get help with student behavior in this classroom for a while but that it fell on deaf ears. "the washington post" also reporting that officials downplayed educators' warnings. including dismissing his threat to light a teacher on fire and watch her die. >> this is an unprecedented situation that we're dealing with. a 6-year-old. this shooting was not accidental, it was intentional. >> reporter: school officials say on the day of shooting they received a tip that led them to search the 6-year-old's backpack but no gun was found. the superintendent sent out a letter to parents this week that they're purchasing 90 metal detectors and clear backpacks to hand out to students.or to you guys, most of the kids are underyears old. >> such a disturbing case. 0 all right, let's go back sam champion and get another check of the weather. he's down there in miami and
