announcer: now from abc 7 -- live breaking news. >> officers arrived on scene and observed numerous individuals pouring out of the location, screaming. the monterey park police fire department responded and treedtt breaking n hurt after a mass shooting following a lunar new year celebration in southern california. good morning and thank you for joining us on this sunday, january 22. we are following this breaking news out of southern california. just moments ago, we got an update from officials on the shooting. authorities say they are still on the hunt for the gunman who opened fire after the lunar new year celebration in monterey park, a suburb of los angeles.

police say the suspect is an asian man but there are not many other details right now. he started shooting around 10:20 last night in a kind of ballroom dance hall facility in monterey park. authorities say it is too early to say if the attack was targeted or has any connection to the victims. >> there were at least 10 additional victims transported to numerous local hospitals. i do want to start off with saying unfortunately, when the fire department did get into the business, they did pronounced 10 of the victims deceased at the scene. transported to numerous local hospitals. they are lifted in various conditions from stable to critical condition. there is a male sus fled the scene and remains

outstanding as of this moment. our very preliminary has been described as a male, asian, and that is scene here in monterey park. liz: a man who owns a restaurant across the street from where this happened told the los angeles times three people rushed into his business and told him to lock the door. they told him there was a shooter with a machine gun with multiple rounds of ammunition on him. however, that information has not been confirmed by police. the annual today street festival in monterey park is one of the largest lunar new year events in southern california. today's event has been canceled with the suspect still on the loose. monterey park is a city of about 60,000 people according to the u.s. census. about 65% of the population is asian. president joe biden is reacting on twitter saying in part "jill and i are praying for those

killed and injured in last nights deadly mass shooting in monterey park and monitoring the situation closely. i urge the community to follow guidance from local officials and law enforcement in the hours ahead." we are getting reaction from other state officials this morning as the news develops. governor gavin newsom put out a tweet saying monterey park should have had a night of joyful celebration of the lunar new year, instead, they were the victims of a horrific and heartless act of gun violence. our hearts learn -- our hea born as we monitor the situation. san francisco's chinatown is hosting their lunar new year celebration. mayor london breed is expected to attend. no word on whether san francisco police will be beefing up their security. the event is still scheduled as planned. we did send a push alert when news broke about this shooting. you can get the latest news with

cove where it is in the 20's right now, much colder in the sierra nevada and windy. we will be looking at the winds ticking up through early tomorrow. dry conditions and we will talk about how long the dry conditions last and wind -- and when that the winds dial back. liz: at least one firefighter is injured and 25 displaced after a two alarm fire early this morning on hayes street in san francisco. two residential buildings were affected. one fire fire had -- one firefighter had minor injuries. they are expected to be ok. 25 people have been displaced by the fire. the cause is still under investigation. president joe biden is expected to sign a memorandum assuring safe access to abortion pills. this comes on what would have been the 50th anniversary of roe v. wade. vice-president kamala harris will announce that in florida

today. could ask health and human services if there is a way to protect doctors from prosecution if they provide pills across state lines. closer to home, the battle over abortion came to san francisco this weekend. dozens of people gathered for the annual walk for life march. >> if you are 100% pro-life without exception, let me hear from you. liz: antiabortion rights demonstrators gathered for a rally. some became emotional as speakers shared their personal stories. supporters marched into downtown on market street and ended at the embarcadero plaza. the cochair of walk for life west coast said this year's crowd was motivated by last year's referendum ticking abortion in california. >> it is heartening to see. i think people are motivated because of prop one and

motivated to show we are definitely here and we are not going to stop fighting for life. liz: all muni following yesterday's march. across the street, there is a counter protest in support of abortion rights. the san francisco women's march kicked off their rally yesterday. demonstrators gathered to speak on abortion rights. >> the messages abortion rights and rise up for the fundamental rights of women and girls. liz: vice president harris his remarks come after this state imposed a 15 week abortion bands without exceptions for rape or human trafficking. in santa rosa, authorities are stressing the importance of getting the un-housed into supportive housing after a homeless man was killed after he caught on fire and a parking lot. it happened not far from highway 10 1 -- highway 101. police believe the deadly opioid

fentanyl was involved. >> jose is pointing to a homeless man caught fire and died early saturday morning in santa rosa. >> i found it pretty surprising because it happened right in our back yard. >> reports of a parking lot just off of santa rosa avenue began coming in just after midnight. >> when officers arrived on scene, they found the fire was actually one male, roughly 30 to 45 years old. it looked like he accidentally sent himself on fire. -- set himself on fire. >> he says they have been able to piece together some of what happened using surveillance video. >> the individual, who we believe to be homeless, was using some sort of narcotic and using a lighter to light a narcotics and immediately

slumped down in late on the ground. >> based on the men's response, they believe he was likely using fentanyl, the powerful opiate fueling the drug crisis in the bay area and beyond. >> he had some crystalline gels in his backpack used to light up and keep warm. >> and when the man let the drug, they believe the residue of those gels likely caught fire. >> causing the residue to heat up and smolder on his clothing which then turned into a flame while he was a sleep. >> this, as sonoma county clears a homeless encampment, temporarily closing part of it down while the city of santa rosa also works to help the unhoused. >> our goal is to get them into permanent supportive housing so hopefully even if they are using narcotics and something goes wrong, at least they are in a safe environment where these kinds of accidents won't take place. liz: the search continues today

for a five-year-old who was swept away by floodwaters. authorities say he went missing two weeks ago after he was overtaken by waters in the paso robles area. crews will search the salinas rivers today as water levels have dropped. crewn hundredslunteers searched here san miguel and san luis obispo counties. today is lunar new year and the bay area has seen many festivities popular among east asian cultures. given the bay area's large asian community, there have been celebrations everywhere. off in oakland chinatown to welcome the year of the rabbit. >> firecrackers will chase evil spirits and bringing good luck. >> karl chan is president of the oakland chinatown chamber foundation.

several illnesses have been damaged in multiple protesters have been arrested. in the north bay, a woman has died after she crashed her car into a back yard pool. police say she was driving down points and pedro road when she swerved into a fence and into the pool. officers rescued her from the tesla but unfortunately, she did not survive. the reason for the crash is not known at this time. we're working to find out if the car's autopilot feature was engaged. we will bring you more details as we get them. in the east bay, passengers will notice changes when they use bart's 19th street station in oakland. federal leaders join for a ceremony to mark the completion of upgrades. those changes are designed to reduce crowding, save energy and make it more difficult for people to skip paying the fare. for comfort, the station has renovated public restrooms and an additional elevator. there is a redesigned concourse with energy efficient lights and

wind to bring some of the cooler air in from the central valley. when it is summertime, we talk about the drying wins, but right now, it is looking like it is windy in the upper elevations, but 45 in santa cruz, three or four degrees wilder this morning due to those upper level winds. 47 in oakland, 44 in palo alto. milder on the peninsula, but santa clara at 40 with half moon bay at 52. from the golden gate bridge, upper 30's from santa rosa and livermore. low 40's in napa with calm winds at the surface for now. our wind advisory from 1:00 today through 7:00 tomorrow morning for all these locations. north winds, 15 to to play five and they will gust in excess of 45 in the upper elevations. this camera could be blowing around later today. sunny and windy, the dry pattern

with us through the weekend but we could get another system that moves into the sierra nevada allowing for some more wind and colder temperatures before the ridge breaks down. we are looking at warmer days as we get into wednesday. there's a look at the next hour where the wind direction has shifted out of the north and into the evening hours. 30 to 40 mile an hour winds and they continue through the overnight hours into early tomorrow. finally by the afternoon, not quite as windy but we have another hazard to pass along. our beach hazard statement where yesterday we had six foot waves, now up to 12 feet in half moon bay. very dangerous come and not only with the winds arriving at the coast, we have the waves and that flooding going on with the king tides. 11:00, we get a tight over seven feet. low-lying areas and parking garages, the bayshore through

opened fire after a lunar new year celebration killing 10 people. at least 10 people are injured. thank you for joining us on this sunday january 22. this happened in monterey park just east of los angeles. police described the shooter as an asian male. we know five of the victims are male and five are female. police are not commenting on their ages. we know 10 people have been killed. when the los angeles county sheriff was asked if there was a hate crime, here's what he said. >> everything is on the table. we don't know if this is specifically a hate crime defined by law, but who walks into a dance hall and guns down 20 people? the description we have now is of a male, asian, does that matter? i don't know. i can tell you everything is on the table. our detectives are looking at every possibility with our partners. >> it is horrible such a thing

could occur at a time of celebration for so many in the a api community and in the asian community worldwide. this is a time to be with family, to celebrate, and yet, this tore a hole through all of our hearts. but, let me say, i have lived in the city for 37 years. i was on the city council and i was its mayor. and i know how strong monterey park is. monterey park is resilient and what i know about the people here is that we will get through this together. liz: police are looking into what appears now to be a second incident less than 20 minutes after the shooting in an area called alhambra and whether it's related to the monterey park shooting. in the alhambra incident, a male suspect asian walked into a dance hall, people wrestled the

information. we will give you updates as they come in this morning. let's move on now -- let's get a check of the forecast today. lisa: the upper level winds have been building all morning long. by 1:00, a wind advisory for everyone. on top of mount 10 -- mount tam, winds in excess of 40 miles an hour. oakland at 47. with the wind, half moon bay, 52. you can see active on the bay. some whitecaps later on with 44 in santa rosa, 43 in livermore. here are the upper elevation winds. but throughout the afternoon, it is going to get easier and windier. we go in with sunny skies for your sunday. the afternoon, mid and upper 50's. those winds offshore up to 25 miles an hour and gusts will be in excess of 50 miles an hour.

to more fully review the findings of the report and let our oversight bodies act. >> armstrong was placed on leave after reportedly failing to take action on a sergeant who rips the bumper off and neighbors car during a hit and run accident. that sergeant later discharged a gun in an elevator inside police headquarters. >> what people don't understand is under this administration, there will be no different kind of treatment, whether you are the chief or rank-and-file. >> a possible setback for the settlement agreement. federal oversight that has been the place for 20 years following past cases of rotella t and misconduct. >> i knew maybe an hour ahead. >> the mayor said she knew about the chiefs investigation just an hour before it was made public on thursday. >> for a new mayor, this is a heck of a welcome to city hall present. she had no heads up it was coming. it was made public the minute she heard about it and she finds herself in the spotlight and

crosshairs at the same time. >> i was surprised to hear we are putting the police chief we all are trying to work with on administrative paid leave. >> the councilman does not support the move. others are calling for independent oversight during the chiefs investigation. >> we need a group of civilians who have teeth and who can hold the police department accountable. >> going forward, the biggest question remains -- will chief armstrong keep his job? >> until we have the full picture to review, i cannot stand here and tell you there has been a decision made. >> stay tuned. liz: former oakland city council person and the mayor's former opponent is speaking out against her decision to place the police chief on leave. loren taylor released a statement saying in part "after reviewing a 16 page investigative report, i've come to the conclusion the decision

to put chief armstrong on administrative leave was excessive and if i were mayor, i would not have done it." taylor says he feels the does not match the infraction. overnight, more classified documents were found in president biden's home. the fbi found six new documents during their more than 12 hours search on friday. maryalice parks has the details and response from the white house. >> for more than 12 hours friday, department of justice officials conducting a remarkable search of president biden's home. biden's personal lawyer saying federal investigators seized six items, including some documents with classified markings from biden's time as a senator as well as vice president. they also took personal, handwritten notes from the vice presidential years for further review. in a new statement, the president lawyer writing we offered to provide prompt access to his home to allow the doj to conduct a search of the entire premises for potential vice

presidential records and potential classified materials, adding it was a thorough search of all the materials in the presence wilmington home to cover all working, living and storage spaces. the doj confirming the search was planned and consensual. this disclosure, the latest in a series of disclosures that has left the president on the defensive. >> i think you are going to find there is nothing there. i have had no regrets and followed what the lawyers have told me to do. >> lawyers say the fact the president authorized such a search shows how he's cooperating with the justice department on going investigation. >> he's not stonewalling, he offering total cooperation with the justice department as this proceeds and that is because of an important reason -- he takes this seriously. he takes classified information seriously. >> while his legal team was present, neither the president nor first lady were there.

mount st. helena, mount tam, they will be gusting in excess of 45 miles an hour. zephyr cove, nevada, highs in the 20's and very gusty winds in the sierra nevada. sunny and windy, the dry pattern takes us through next weekend and, looking at the warmer days as we get into wednesday, though wind direction out of the north, bringing those cool drainage wins our way and by the afternoon, 27-30 mile an hour gusts so the coast will be the gusty us. very windy from fremont through the delta, up to 36 miles an hour in the overnight hours and that keeps the temperatures from dropping. early morning hours, still those offshore winds and by the afternoon, it will lighten up. we also have a beach hazard statement and these have steadily climbed from six feet yesterday to trophy outside of half moon bay.
