>> i want this anybody out there guys. this has been painful. sheriff makes a pledge for justice after a horrific mass shooting near los angeles, and the government on the run. thank you for joining us this evening. i am jr stone. let's get to the developing news on the shooting. the trail of violence covers three cities near los angeles, and beginning last night just after 10:00. police say a man fired at a dance studio. 10 people died, 10 others were injured. 10 minutes later, a gunman showed up at a dance studio in neighboring alhambra. the sheriff says a group of people managed to disarm the gunman and he got away. the nearly 12 hours later at 11:00 this morning, police got into a standoff with the suspect in we have team coverage of the shooting and the impact here in the bay area beginning with abc

news reporter tim pulliam live in monterey park with the latest on the investigation. tim: jr, d gunman shot 20 people, at 10 of them dead. we are awaiting a press conference where we hope to learn his motive,. and his identity. . . look at this aerial view showing the moment police surround the white man in a standoff with the possible mass shooting suspect. once tactical teams moved in, please tell abc news they found a man inside believed to be dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. it's unclear whether he is the suspect in shooter. >> could he be our suspect? possibly, but at this point if we are doing our jobs we are not only looking at the situation or scenario, but we are making sure that we are looking at any and every possibility. tim: today authorities releasing the murder suspect's image, but not his name.

overnight, 10 people killed and at least 10 injured in the mass shooting near los angeles. >> approximately 10 deceased. tim: crews were shipped to t scene outside this dance studio, treating victims in the parking lot. survivors rushed to the parking lot. authorities say their conditions range from critical to stable. witnesses described the terror. >> sounded like a heavy artillery weapon. tim: the shooter going on a rampage inside this dance studio. >> i am scared. >> we feel so safe. but how come? what happened? tim: performance before the deadly attack, people in this predominantly asian community celebrating the lunar new year nearby. authorities say they are investigating whether a second incident at another ballroom in a neighboring suburb is tied to the shooting. >> as we are looking for the suspect, we will not forget the victims and survivors. tim: so far,tim: investigators not saying if the attack was a racial hate crime. the fbi is now involved. and again, we are waiting for the press conference which is

just moments away. we are hoping to learn if the suspect knew any of the victims. day two of this lunar festival is canceled. in los angeles, tim pulliam, abc7 news. will any other events be canceled? tim: jr, so far, no ot events have been canceled. the sheriff came forward and said he discourages people from doing that. he even attended one of them earlier, even providing some extra security to provide some hope and safety for folks. j.r.: tim pulliam, thank you so much. the annual lunar new festival that began in monterey park yesterday is one of the biggest in southern california. monterey park is a city of about 60,000 people located nine miles east of los angeles. the city has a predominantly asian community. 65% of the population is asian,

according to census data. city leaders say monterey park prides itself for being multigenerational, popular for both new immigrants and second and third generation asian americans. here in the bay area, the api community and city leaders are reacting to the mass shooting with thoughts and prayers for two. this was. a day to celebrate the lunar new year permit but now, the talk is of public safety and increased police patrols at westerlies. reporter cornell barnard is here with that part of the story. cornell: police across the area say they plan to increase security around events to help the community feel safe. ♪ cornell: the year of the rabbit was greeted in san francisco's chinatown with a mix of drumbeats and heavy hearts for the victims of the mass shooting monterey park on the eve of the lunar new year celebrations. >> i want to take a moment of silence for those families and those victims who lost their

lives to this tragedy. cornell: mayor london breed called for prayers in the week of thegedy. there was a large police presence at this police ne new year event. law enforcement officials promised to have a visible presence in the asian community over the next several weeks. >> we will also make sure we increase our presence during the parade. at any public gathering, we will be there. cornell: lunar new year parade officials asking volunteers to be vigilant. >> our volunteers, our marshals to be vigilant. if they spot anything out of the ordinary, to report to the officers. cornell: in the south base san jose police tweeting it is monitoring the event in monroe park. "we do not believe there is a connection to san jose." oakland police also stepping up patrols. opd will continue to patrol the city of oakland, providing additional resources and high

visibility were necessary, including within our chinatown community. "the safety of our residents, businesses and visitors, is of utmost importance." president carl chan of the foundation says after years of attacks on aapi seniors, he had hope for >> there are so many things happening in our api community, so we thought with this new year getting started, without things would be getting better. cornell: community leaders say that while it is a time of grief and reflection, the lunar new year is about a new beginnings. >> and of course celebrate a bit harder with your community because that is how we will make sure that love conquers hate, and not the other way around. cornell: groups like the coalition for community safety and justice will be offering support services for those experiencing fear or trauma in the wake of the monterey park shooting. outreach workers will be available at lunar new year event getting january 28 in san francisco's bayview

the car hit a woman around 2:00 this morning in the mission district at 16th and cap street. the driver left. paramedics took the woman to hospital, she is expected to survive. shortly after, the same car was involved in a crash with a second vehicle at 16th and potrero street. the victim died at the hospital while the suspected driver was injured and taken to police custody. the treasury temple in san francisco's sunset district is celebrating the new year with an exhibit of buddhist relics. ♪ special chanting ceremony for guests who came to see the collection of 10,000 relics. it includes sacred teeth and bones that are nearly 3000 years old. everyone is welcome to receive blessings, and meditate in the presence of the relics. >> the energy from the relic will actually enter their body and give them a lot of benefits, a lot of blessings.

of traditional asian folk music entertained a massive crowd at the lunar new year celebration at bishop branch in san ramon. lively performances violated the unique music of the asian diaspora. as you can see, it was a full house. the crowd was full of local families out to celebrate the year of the rabbit. nights are a little brighter in the north bay as napa celebrated its light art festival. the event kicked off last lighted art festival is this liberation of creative arts and technology and lights. it's a free, walkable outdoor experience that features 10 lighted sculptures and projected artwork on three iconic downtown buildings. it runs through february 19. i am joined now by the meteorologist. that would be great to see. if you are going out, bring your hat, right? >> definitely hang onto your hat if you are going outside especially tonight. the winds will be picking up

overnight. it is a look at the satellite radar image. the crowds are moving from the north and those are the strong winds we are seeing right now, they are gusting up to 32 miles per hour in oakland. 25 in san mateo and hayward. even san jose, gusting up to 21 miles per hour. . there is a wind advisory in effect until tomorrow this is especially hazardous for trees and power lines. wind gusts could reach up to 45 miles per hour, up to 60 miles per hour in the higher elevations. that will show you the forecast for the guests, notice they pick up a bin at 9:00, 40 miles per hour possible in half moon bay. . they remain strong during the afternoon hours into tomorrow morning. here is it the live view from emeryville as we look at west towards the gorgeous sunset right now with the blue sky. in san francisco it is 57. san jose, 57. half moon bay, . live shot in san jose of the airport, notice how the camera is moving around, gives you an idea how windy it is.

enforcement partners were able to confirm the identity of the male inside the white cargo van as the suspect in the mass shooting that we had in monterey park. based on the previous information relayed by homicide investigators regarding the white van involved and seen leaving the scene of the incident in the city of alhambra, the torrance police department was notified and -- am sorry, torrance police officers located the white van matching the description near the area of support and hawthorne boulevard. as torrance officers pulled behind the vehicle, the white van entered a shopping center parking lot. when officers exited their patrol vehicle to contact the occupant, they heard one gunshot coming from within the van.

officers retreated and requested several tactical teams to respond to -- to respond. two armored vehicles responded and were able to restrict the van's movement. 12:52 p.m., our sheriff's swat team approached and cleared the van and determined the suspect sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene. investigators conducted a search of the vehicle and determined the male inside the van was the mass shooting suspect. during the search, several pieces of evidence were found inside the van linking the suspect to both locations in monterey park and in alhambra. in addition, a handgun was discovered inside the van. the suspect has been identified as hu kan

the way that is spelled is huu can last name, trang. he is a 72-year-old male asian. i can confirm that there are no outstanding suspects from the mass shooting incident that occurred in the city of monterey park. and although that closes a portion of a very long day for all of us, the investigation is still ongoing. sheriffs homicide detectives are working around-the-clock, gathering additional information and working on determining the motive behind this extremely tragic event. i would like to thank chief weiss and the monterey

police department, the federal bureau of investigation, the alcohol tobacco and firearms, california's service of emergency offices, the u.s. to probative justice, the torrance police department attorney's office, supervisor of the sublease has been here with us for the previous and the surrounding southbay law enforcement agencies. initially we are giving thanks to the monterey park fire department for their lifesaving measures. i was informed before coming out here that we still have seven victims who are hospitalized, and i am sure that the work of our firefighters and police officers contributed to saving at least those lives.

as i stand proud, really, of all of us, the community, all of you in the media. i could say we did this together. we really did. where there is tragedy, we have to lean on each other, and that is what we did. but before i turn it over to the next speaker, when i got here and i saw -- and i told her this morning -- the look in the eyes of the homicide investigators and all of their staff, you could just tell they were going to get this guy. and although i could not talk in detail about that earlier today, i am very proud of captain andy meyer and the whole entire homicide bureau who not only got us to this point, but there was a lot of work and investigation to be done.

and really quickly, before i turn it over to the next speaker, you have been asking me the motive. we still are not clear of the motive. the investigation continues, and that is something that we are all -- we want to know. we want to know how something like this, something this awful can happen. also in regards to the weapons, there was a handgun that was discovered in the van with the suspect. the weapon that was recovered from the alhambra location in which, remember, the suspect went to the alhambra location after he conducted the shooting and he was disarmed by two community members who i consider heroes because they saved lives. this could have been much worse. the weapon that we recovered at
