j.r.: new developments. we learned just a short time ago that the search for a gunman in the mass shooting has ended after swat members found the suspects body. thank you for joining us, i am jr stone. let's get to that new information on that shooting. about half an hour ago, the centralist county sheriff robert luna told reporters, the gunman is dead. he identified the suspect as 72-year-old huu tran. he died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound when police approached the van he was in. seven people remain in the hospital after the gunman opened fire inside the dance studio. 's body was found 12 hours after the shooting. the trail of violence covered three cities near los angeles, beginning last night after 10:00. police they tra fire inside a dance studio.

a few hours later police say he showed up in another dance studio in neighboring alhambra. two people disarmed the gunman and he got away. then around 11:00 this morning, police got into a standoff with the suspect in torrance. a reporter from our sister station in los angeles has the latest from monterey park. reporter: it was a horrific scene of carnage as the gunman shot into a group of people killing 10 and injuring 10 others. it has turned the community. it started as a night of celebration for the lunar new year gunman opened fire at the stark ballroom dance studio in the city of monterey park. it was unclear what type of weapon the suspect used, but officials do not believe it was an assault weapon. >> when fire department got into the business, they pronounced 10 of the victims a deceased at the scene that i just described. reporter: the 10 additional victims were transported to numerous local hospitals and

they are listed in various conditions, from stable to critical condition. the suspect identified was this man, huu can tran. he is at 72-year-old male asian. reporter: after the first shooting, the suspect went into a second darren soto in alhambra. police say at that location, people fought with him and they were able to take away his weapon. he then got into a white van and took off. . authorities tracked the van down in torrance where there was a standoff with swat. when sheriffs moved in, he was dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot. >> that closes a portion of a very long day for all of us. the investigation is still ongoing. sheriffs homicide detectives are working around the clock, gathering additional information and working on determining the motive behind this extremely

tragic event. j.r.: the annual lunar new year festival that began in monterey park yesterday is one of the biggest in southern california. monterey park is a city of about 60,000 people located about nine miles east of los angeles. the city has a predominantly asian community. 65% of the population is asian, according to census data. city leaders say monterey park prides itself for being multigenerational, popular for both new immigrants and second and third generation asian americans. here in the bay area, the it api community and city leaders are reacting to the mass shooting with thoughts and prayers for two. now the talk is of public safety and increased police patrols at festivities. abc7news reporter cornell barnard is here with that part of the story. cornell: police across the area

are now increasing security at lunar new year events to help keep the community feeling safe. ♪ cornell: the year of the rabbit was greeted in san francisco's chinatown with a mix of drumbeats and heavy hearts for the victims of the mass shooting monterey park on the eve of the lunar new year celebrations. >> i-110 jake kyman moment of silence for those families and those victims who lost their lives to this tragedy. cornell: mayor london breed called for prayers in the week of the tragedy. there was a large police presence at this police new year -- at this new year kickoff event. san francisco police officers and sheriffs deputies on patrol. law enforcement officials farmers to have a visible presence in the asian community over the next several weeks. >> we will also make sure to increase our presence during the parade. at any public gathering, we will be there. cornell: lunar new year parade officials asking volunteers to be vigilant. >> we also alerted our volunteers, our parade marshals

and our student marshals to be vigilant. and if they spot anything out of the ordinary, to report to the officers. cornell: in the south base san -- in the southbay, san jose police tweeting it is monitoring the event in monroe park. "we do not believe there is a connection to san jose." in oakland, police are also stepping up patrols for events. opd will continue to patrol the city of oakland, providing additional resources and high visibility where necessary, including "within our chinatown community. the safety of our residents, businesses and visitors, is of utmost importance." oakland chinatown chamber foundation president carl chan says after years of reported attacks on aapi seniors, he had hope for 2023. >> there are so many things happening in our aapi community. so we thought with this new year getting started, we thought things would be getting better. cornell: community leaders say that while it is a time of grief and reflection, the lunar new year is about a new beginnings.

>> and, of course, celebrate a bit harder with your community because that is how we will make sure that love conquers hate, and not the other way around. >> there is hope for those experiencing trauma or fear in the wake of the shooting. the coalition for community safety and justice will be offering support services at lunar new year events beginning january 28 in san francisco's bayview neighborhood. i am cornell barnard, abc7 news. j.r.: thank you. governor gavin newsom released a statement in response to the shooting saying on twitter, quote, "monterey park should've had a night of joyful celebration of the lunar new year. instead they were victims of a horrific and heartless act of gun violence. our hearts mourn as we learn more about the devastating acts of last night." the nonprofit "stand with asian americans" said, quote, "we are here to show our solidarity and we are working with people in these communities to find out how we can support them."

since wednesday after mudslides imported the trains. the first on tuesday and the second on wednesday, both happened in niles canyon between fremont encinal in southern alameda county. hundreds of passengers on board were impacted and three were injured. vice president kamala harris marked the 50th anniversary of roe v. wade by urging supporters of reproductive rights to keep up the fight. harris says the cou has meant that many dedicated doctors and nurses have lost the ability to care for their patients. she announced that president joe biden will sign a memorandum aimed at protecting access to medication that is used for abortions. two crashes involving a hit-and-run driver in san francisco left one person dead and a second injured. a car hit a woman around 2:00 this morning in the mission district at 16th and cap street. the driver left. paramedics took the woman to hospital, she is expected to survive.

shortly after, the same car was involved in a crash with a second vehicle at 16th and potrero street. the victim died at the hospital while the suspected driver was injured and taken to police custody. a house fire in san francisco injured a firefighter, and left 25 people in need of a new place to stay. the fire started around 2:00 this morning at an apartment building on hays and street. flames spread to a second home. the firefighter is expected to be ok. no word just yet on what caused the fire. the new dharma treasury temple in san francisco's sunset district is celebrating the new year with an exhibit of buddhist relics. ♪ there was a lion dance, and a special chanting ceremony for guests who came to see the collection of 10,000 relics. it includes sacred teeth and finger bones that are nearly

year of the rabbit. i am joined right now by meteorologist frances dinglasan. if they were out celebrating, they might have been hit by the wind. frances: oh, yeah. . you can feel eat out there right now. i want to stay you. image looping over the last few hours, you can see the winds from the north. that has brought us clear skies, but boy, it is gusty right now. in oakland right now gusting up to 40 miles per hour. 33 miles per hour in san francisco. these winds will continue through tomorrow morning with the wind advisory in effect until 7:00 a.m.. wind gusts up to 45 miles per hour. even up to 60 miles per hour in our higher mountaintops. . this could make for dangerous conditions for trees and also powerlines. so be careful especially if you are driving across the bridges with the winds coming from the north. winds will continue to be strong overnight enter tomorrow morning, and eventually drop down to bruise your conditions by tomorrow afternoon. here is a live look outside.

you can see the camera shaking of the bit. this is at the san jose airport. 50 in san francisco. oakland, 56. santa clara is cooler, 52 degrees. from sutra, we are looking at the bright lights in san francisco. low 50's in santa rosa, napa, fairfield. concord at 51 degrees right now. in addition to the wind advisory, there is a coastal flood advisory. we are expecting minor coastal flooding possible during high tide tomorrow around noon, for the low-lying areas around the bay. be careful, you know where the usual spots are. lows tonight will be in the mid 30's and 40's. it will be chilly. but the winds will prevent us from dropping below the mid-30s. then tomorrow we will see some 60's in the forecast with some sunshine. mid-60s in parts of the north bay like santa rosa, 64. san francisco, 59. after the winds died down, high pressure builds, and we have a
