suburb of monterey park remains a mystery. tonight, yet another memorial. a somber side of another mass shooting in america, this one killing 10 people at studio used as a place to celebrate the lunar new year. we have team coverage for you. we will get to tara campbell in a moment. first, we go to nick garcia in fresno who has been in monterey park today with the latest. nick: in the last few hours, monterey park police have reopened this parking lot but the ballroom dance studio behind the remains closed. community members bringing flowers and mourning. monterey park, just a few miles east of downtown los angeles, with a population that is 65% asian american, is known for its lunar new year festivals. this year, the year of the

rabbit which represents longevity and peace, violently interrupted by a lone gunman. saturday night, 72-year-old huu can tran opened fire inside the star ballroom dance studio, killing 10 and wounding 10 others. about 20 minutes later, investigators believe the same man entered a dance studio in nearby alhambra. a group of people wrestled him to the ground and grabbed the gun. the suspect managed to escape but their bravery likely prevented more casualties. the massacre, a stark reminder of the many mass shootings that have left a scar on the nation. >> the status quo is not working so we need to re-examine what we are doing and what may work better. and i hope that this tragedy does not just go on a long list of many others that we don't even talk about until the next one comes up. nick: police say the suspect shot and killed himself inside this white cargo van during an

hours long swat standoff. people in monterey park stunned. >> nothing like this has ever happened. i have been here all my life. nick: monterey park is a tightknit community. crowds gathered to pray on sunday afternoon. >> we are praying for the people as they grapple with the fear and trauma, for the asian american community. even though this does not seem to be racial hate, it still triggers feelings of hate. nick: and the violence will also touch many of the mourners personally. >> i know most of the people will have a friend of a friend. nick: while the city pauses to grieve the victims, a small collection of flowers and candles highlights the unity and resilience of the community. as sheriff luna says, he believes all the victims are in their 50's, 60's and 70's but it is unclear when their names will be released. also, the weapon that was recovered at the alhambra scene

that is the only conversation that people are having. tara: the shooter's motive is still unclear, but hate crime or not, wu says the message must be clear. >> we have been working on a float for the chinese new year parade. the theme is we all belong. tara: and mayor breed says city will be stepping up there police presence at lunar new year's events over the next couple of weeks. they are also stepping up patrols in oakland. j.r.: thanks. it is that safety that is now top of mind for lunar new year celebrations across the bay area. we saw the strength and security today with san francisco police officers and sheriff's deputies patrolling the kickoff celebrations in chinatown. law enforcement was sure to make themselves extra visible. large crowds marking the year of the rabbit. >> we will also make sure we increase our presence during the parade, at any public gathering.

j.r.: the festival at san jose's history part, officers stood watch there. san jose police said there is no known southbay connection to the shooting in monterey park. governor gavin newsom was down in monterey park today, tweeting these photos. he captured them by saying "the strength of this community is incredible. no other country in the world is terrorized by this constant stream of gun violence. we need real gun reform at a national level." president biden issued this statement saying, "while there is still much we don't know about the motive in this senseless attack, we do know that many families are grieving tonight. we are praying that their loved one will recover from their wounds." the president is ordering all flags to fly at half staff through sundown on thursday to honor the victims. to other news and turning to the big game today. the big win, we can say.

look at the weather. hopefully it is drying out. >> the dry days will probably continue for the rest of the month. you can see the strong winds from the north. it is a good thing it is drive because there's a wind advisory in effect. still could be a problem with gusts up to 60 miles per hour in the higher elevations. at sfo, about 29 miles gusts up to 40 miles per hour earlier this evening in oakland. the window will remain strong into tomorrow morning. even 7:00, could see 34 mile-per-hour winds in half moon bay. it should be breezy by the afternoon. if you have been sneezing a lot, you can see the palm trees are blowing this live shot. tree pollen is the culprit. we are seeing elem, juniper, and cedar and that is what is causing some of my sneezing. temperatures in the low 50's to the mid 50's.

dropping into the 40's in some spots like the north bay. and then tomorrow morning when you wake up, the coolest temperatures will be in the mid 30's and some of the spots like lakeport, livermore, morgan hill. we will see low to mid 40's around the bay. not as cold as some of the freezing temperatures we saw a couple nights ago. the highs tomorrow will be near 60 degrees with plenty of sunshine. we will be dry all week long. there is still a coastal flood advisory in effect until 3:00 tomorrow. high tide is around noon and that is the time we will likely see some flooding in the low-lying areas. and then checkup the warming trend in san jose. a little bit above average by the end of the week. you can see that with the accuweather 7-day forecast. sunshine all week long. we will be ramping up the temperatures a few degrees but we will enjoy the sunshine.
