after a horrific act of violence. 10 people killed at a popular dance all in southern california in the middle of winter new year celebrations. the motive is still a mystery but we are learning about the heroic actions of one person. jobina: yes, survivors say that they were inside of the dance hall saturday night in monterey park when the government started shooting. 10 people died, 10 more were hurt. law enforcement searched the shooters home about 80 miles away from where the shooting took place and after the shooting at the dance hall the shooter then went to another dance hall these images are of the fight for the gun. one of the men that you see here disarmed of the suspect and is being credited as a hero preventing further tragedy. >> it was the sound o

object clinking together. they were rubbing and i turned around and saw that there was an asian man holding a gun. my first thought was i was going to die here. jobina: there are still plenty of questions in the case. the ages of the victims range from 50 to about 70. their names have not been released yet our sister station identified one of the victims as a well-known dance instructor loved by the community who reportedly tried to save others during the shooting. reggie? reggie: thank you. of course local lunar new year celebrations are taking on a different feel in the wake of the shooting. gloria? gloria: community leaders are reacting to the mass shooting with thoughts and prayers for those killed. this was the day to celebrate the start of the lunar new year but now there is talk of public safety and increased police patrols. greeted in chinatown with a mix

of drumbeats and heavy hearts. for the victims of the mass shooting in monterey park on the eve of lunar new year celebrations. from dumpling making to dancing, determined to ring in the year of the rabbit. the mayor in chinatown for a moment of silence for the families and victims lost their lives to the tragedy. >> we should be coming together as one to celebrate and a lot of families are not able to do that on this day. it's been a tough time. >> sad to hear about it. we feel sorry for them but we still celebrate the chinese new year. this is a part of our culture. there was a large police presence at the lunar new year kickoff event. sheriff's deputies and police officers were on patrol. they promised to have a visible presence in the asian community

kumasi: landslides onto the track and parts of niles king disrupted service twice last week, forcing officials to stop all trains through the weekend. lena howland is in pleasanton this morning as writers load up for the morning commute. no longer derailed for passengers who rely on this train to get to work every morning in the south they. we have seen the first train come through at the pleasanton station. even though it was only a couple of minutes late, everything is pretty much on schedule as usual this morning. as we have been reporting, the closure came after two back-to-back mudslides hit in the niles canyon area and after the wednesday incident left three people injured with hundreds stranded on the track for three hours, that is when ace decided to stop train service for the week. a spokesperson for the train

reggie: a small plane crashed on the highway near houston. the pilot said the plane lost power and he had no other choice but to try to landed on the road. well he almost made it to the road but first he made contact with the top of an 18 wheeler. the plane clipped of the barrier on the road, marked fire. the pilot escaped without major injuries. new at 6:00, alec baldwin will return for the lead role in "rust," despite two involuntary manslaughter charges against him. the lawyer for the company has returned that baldwin --

confirmed baldwin is returning. there will be no live ammunition used during filming. the incident happened in 2021 in new mexico, resulting in the death of the cinematographer. kumasi: the naacp is planning to address a controversy surrounding the oakland police chief leronne armstrong who was placed on administrative leave last week after a report of police misconduct. armstrong was accused of failing to take action on a sergeant who ripped a bumper off of a neighbor's car. the same sergeant reportedly fired a gun inside lee's headquarters. oakland's new mayor, sheng thao placed armstrong on leave for dereliction of duty. she said that her goal is not to be punitive but to have an opportunity to fully review the situation. reggie: pete buttigieg, u.s. secretary of transportation, coming to san francisco to highlight $400 million in federal money that will be used

their normal schedule after multiple mudslides impacted service, hundreds of passengers, leaving three people hurt last week. lena howland's live in pleasanton with the details. lena: finally as usual for this commuter train which so many super commuters rely on to get to work in the san jose area. h train service has been shut down since mid-wednesday morning because of two back-to-back mudslides hitting the train in the niles canyon area tuesday and wednesday morning. wednesday's incident left three injured and hundreds stranded on the track for about three hours. that is when ace decided to stop train service for the week. theyol that passenger safety is their number one priority and they said they would not resume operations until they could be sure the

yesterday law enforcement survey search warrant at the suspect's home. neighbors say he was a dance instructor who lived alone. the l.a. county sheriff has identified the suspect as 72-year-old he had an automatic pistol that was illegal in california. the shooting happened at a monterey park dance studio can seven minutes later he moved to a dance studio in alhambra, where we are told the people wrestled away the gun before he got away in a white van. the sheriff says they are not looking for any other suspects. the motive for the attack has been unclear but authorities say domestic violence may be possible. >> california has some of the strictest gun laws in the country but look at what we just
