5:00 pm
>> kg abc 7, live breaking news. >> breaking news in half paint -- half moon bay, people are a dead end in critical condition after shepherd shootings. the sheriff's office told us the suspect is in custody. >> this is video of the man being taken into custody. this happened a short time ago. we are not sure if this is the person. they have not identified the person who is in custody. one of the locations of the shootings is a mushroom farm on san mateo road. one person is dead and three people are in critical condition there. >> south of downtown half moon bay on highway 1, there are
5:01 pm
three people dead at the second scene at rice instructing at sawyer farm. we spoke with david cannot but a short time ago. >> this is really a tragedy, in light of what is happening. this is an incident that we are all shocked about, and really, to be quite frank with you, do think could happen. >> this is a live look from sky 7. earlier we were told that the holy family children's center was put on lockdown. that is about 3:20. officials there said authorities told them they were searching for a man in a red suv. >> j.r. stone is at a staging area. he was there a few minutes ago when the suspect was taken into custody. jr? j.r.: dan, very tense chris: out here in half moon bay. i can tell you that suspect who was taken into custody does match the description of the man they were looking for in connection to those other
5:02 pm
shootings, but we have not yet gotten confirmed that that is the man they were looking for, but he does match the description, and the vehicle he was in matches the description of the car. what a tense 15 minutes it has been. we were set up and we were the only station set up outside of the police department, the substation from san mateo sheriff's department, waiting for a possible press conference at 5:00 or 5:30. i walked through the community center, walked back, and i heard officers yelling, get your hands up in the air, get out of the car, get down on the ground. i want to step out of the way, so you can see what it looks like out here, because when you look off into the distance, you can see those officers near some of those vehicles. now, from where they are standing right now, we were set up around 10 feet to 15 feet from that location. my photographer actually shot video as they had their guns drawn, and they were ordering the man down to the ground.
5:03 pm
even when he was down on the ground, he looked as if he was trying to get up. they had a couple of them keeping him down on the ground in that position. you can imagine, i walked back around the bush, and i could hear them just shouting. the next thing you know, within a matter of 30 seconds, use all dozens of officers and vehicles making their way out here, helping out with the scene. since that time, they have roped off this area with yellow crime scene tape, as it is an active investigation, and they took that gentleman into custody. so really we are out here, waiting to get updated on this situated. -- situation initially, they were going to update us with possible subsequent -- suspect descriptions i told my photographer, keep your eyes open for a maroon suv, and it was a maroon suv that the suspect was taken out of when all of this went down. dan, ama, back to you in the studio. dan: jr, a remarkable video. you guys were in the right place at the right time. how long did that process take?
5:04 pm
can you walk us through a little bit of what we saw before and after that video we show? j.r.: i came around the corner, i could hear shouting from where my photographer was located. i would say somewhere in the neighborhood of a couple of minutes, but the suspect did not initially get out of that vehicle. there was shouting. i do not know is the windows were up or down at that point. i was instantly looking to see not only where the officers were but where my photographer edward was, and if he was ok in all of this. he was taking a knee. he was behind those officers who had their guns drawn. eventually, that man came out. he would not go straight to the ground, so it took one of those officers to taken down to the ground. it was, again, a process that happened, two, three minutes, but, wow, what a few minutes it was. dan: just remarkable, intense. thank you, jr. ama: let's get to gloria
5:05 pm
rodriguez she is live at the scene at mount mushroom farm. gloria, what is the scene? gloria: it has been intense out here as well. we saw some law enforcement officials take off in their vehicles with their sirens blaring. just a little bit ago, right behind us on state route 92, we saw more vehicles with their sirens blaring, heading toward 280, so we do not know exactly what was happening. we have heard a lot of police activity. we know a suspect is in custody, but we don't have all the details right now. there is some crime tape up here, so you can see they had picked off this area. these are the spanish town shops and the mushroom farm is out here as well could for those of you who know this area, this is off of state route 92 or san mateo road, so pretty much the same thing. the other thing we have seen well we have been out here, the corner isn't -- coror
5:06 pm
on the scene could we have seen the sheriff arrive. obviously they are not letting us get very close, so we are working to get more from nation. sky 7 captured video of police bringing a person to the police station in handcuffs, but it is not clear if it is connected to the case we want to give you an update on what we know for sure so far. sources tell us one person is dead and three people are in critical condition. where we are, this is the mountain mushroom farm on san mateo road, again, also known as state right now due to -- state route 92 by locals here. south of half moon bay at highway 1, there is a second scene at rice trucking, and the holy family children center has been on lockdown since about 3:20 this afternoon. back your live, you can see the workers that are out here, and i can tell you they just looked terrified out here. we have not been able to talk to
5:07 pm
an event, because we are getting -- being kept at a distance. we have an update that i suspect is now in custody. lived in half moon bay, gloria rodriguez, abc 7 news. ama:, gloria, can you talk to us a little bit more about this area and the mushroom farm? we heard possibly there was a marijuana grow. there are some palms forms that families can go to, kids can go to. -- some farms that families can go to, kids can go to pit what can you tell us about this? gloria: i live in the area, so i was getting a lot of texts that there was something going on out here. people were seeing police activity, helicopters out here, and it is a small community, so people know each other. people have been hearing about a shooter, people were terrified. i did talk to somebody here who tells me the mushroom farm's are behind this way. we don't have to many details,
5:08 pm
because we really cannot see too much from where we are right now, because that is blocked off, obviously, and there are no signs of the mushroom farm's, but i am told that they are behind there. we have been told by people here that there are some marijuana growing facilities here, but again, we are working to get more information on that and if there's is any connection on that at all. you saw a lot of the workers behind us. it appears they are farmers, and justly looks on their faces, they look so terrified out here. dan: understandable. all right, thank you, gloria. abc 7 news dustin dorsey is live at stanford medical center. that is where victims were taken. dustin? purdy we understand there were -- dus we understandtin: there were three victims when we showed up. that is when we saw a chp helicopter come in, land on top of the hospital here, the helipad, and then take off a short while later. it is unclear at this time how
5:09 pm
many victims were in that. have been sitting here ever since, waiting to see if there's any other helicopter or police activity. at this time, we have not seen that yet. things are calm right now the outskirts of campus. we can only imagine what is going on right now in that hospital that is just over my shoulder in the building behind here at stanford. of course one of the most well renowned hospitals in the area, so, you know, hopefully the injured will be in good condition here. we are about 35 minutes from where the shootings happened half moon bay along highway 92, so we have reached out to stanford. we have yet to hear back any information about how many people are here, what the latest on their status, but we will continue to push onto that and get that information as soon as we can get it. ama: dustin, thank you. we assume we will get more information when the news conference happens hopefully they can update us. dustin, thank you. dan: obviously at this moment, police are trying to secure the situation, and the suspect has been taken into custody, people being treated. there's a lot of work to do, but
5:10 pm
to recap, four people have been killed, three others are in critical condition after a shooting at two separate locations. ama: yes, and one was mountain mushroom farm on san mateo road. that is where one person is dead, and three people were in critical condition. and then south of downtown half moon bay on highway 1, 3 people dead at the second scene, which is rice trucking-soil farm. as we saw, that dramatic video from jr and edgar of that person being taken into custody. again, awaiting a news conference at we are continuing to follow this come and we will get you more after the break. dan: we will, and this is a live picture from sky 7. they were looking for a maroon suv. this is live video of the maroon suv. i suspect was taken into custody near the shooting scenes. our j.r. stone along with his photographer, edgar, got really dramatic, a close video of the person being taken into custody, thrown on the ground in the parking lot, the asphalt, and

5:13 pm
ama: all right, we are going to take another live look from sky 7 hd above the scene in half moon bay as we continue to follow breaking news. two shootings, two separate locations, one person taken into custody, but four people have died in these two shootings. three people in critical condition, taken to stanford for medical care. we do not have any updated information. last we heard, they were in critical condition, but we are continuing to monitor the situation, and hopefully we will have a news conference coming up to hear from authorities. obviously they have been busy, trying to secure these two scenes and trying to get the victims to get medical care, but again, we are taking a live look from sky 7. one location was a mountain
5:14 pm
mushroom farm on san mateo road, and the other was just south of downtown half moon bay on highway one, and that was at rice trucking. those of the two shooting locations that police are trying to make sure that they have all the evidence on the scene from the shootings. dan: again, we saw moments ago someone being taken into custody. amanda del castillo is li one of the locations near one of the shooting scenes with the very latest there. amanda? amanda: we are standing outside of rice trucking, just over my right shoulder appeared when we arrive, they were family members frantically calling other family members, trying to get any information that they possibly could come a lot of them with tears in their eyes. in speaking with them, i asked what they were looking for, what they had heard, and they said they are looking for their uncle who work at this mushroom farm just on the road from me. we have seen sheriff's
5:15 pm
cars coming in and out of this road right here. that family member told me their uncle has worked there for decades at the mushroom all they know is that they got a call in the afternoon, someone telling them something awful happened at the scene. they have been trying their uncle for about an hour now, have not been able to get in touch with him. obviously very concerned about what that might signal for that family. they say that the mushroom farm where their uncle worked at is very much buried behind, off the main road, so it would be difficult for anyone to know that it is back there unless you actually knew that it was back there, so, for that reason, the family is wondering what could have, you know, caused someone to really drive down this road and just cause such a mass casualty event. people are coming here to the scene, trying to ask questions, but that family trying to frantically get in touch with
5:16 pm
their uncle right now. we are trying to still figure out which of the scenes this is happening at, because we know that there was some talk about rice trucking being seen, but it is just the mushroom farm everyone is directing us toward, just down back, down that road just a bit. we just got to the scene about 10 minutes ago. we will be still collecting all of that information, speaking with family members as well. now i will toss it back to you as we continue to just stay on this developing news. for now, live in half moon bay, amanda del castillo, abc 7 news. ama: and must be hard for all those families, waiting to hear firm their loved ones -- from their loved ones. dan: desperate. four people dead, three incredible condition. we may be able to show you some live pictures here, some video from a few minutes ago. one person is dead, three critically injured from mountain mushroom farm. second incident scene,
5:17 pm
are told three or dead, according to a source that we have, so, again, four debt in two separate locations, three in one location, one in the second location, and three more incredible condition, all taken to stanford hospital. these are live pictures of the farms in san mateo county. three people taken to stanford medical center for treatment. ama: there's also the holy family children center on lockdown since 3:20 p not have any updated information about -- for parents who are worried about kids who might be there, what they can do to pick the children up. dan: this comes on the heels of the shooting in southern california, and yet again something happens closer to home in the bay area, causing, deep concern for those in the community, especially for those connected directly with these two businesses and also the school that ama just mentioned.
5:18 pm
very stressful, tense situation. the good news, and we use that word loosely, the good news is the suspect is in custody, so there is no more imminent danger to people in this community, because a suspect has been placed under arrest, the latest word we had. we saw someone being taken into custody. j.r. shot that picture, dramatic video from j.r. we do not know yet that that is the suspect in this shooting, but we are assuming that is the case. we did see somebody taken into custody, and j.r. is live with the very latest on that. j.r.? sorry, we are told he was ready, he is not ready just yet. ama: it is crazy, dan, because i always check our website for the news of the day, and the headline that got me today was there has been more mass shootings than days in 2023. dan: isn't that staggering? ama: devastating. dan: the united states is unique in this kind of figure. ama: i think we have jr now.
5:19 pm
what is the latest where you are? j.r.: yeah, what a tense 30 or so minutes it has been. there is a woman being interviewed i was trying to closer to. just to give you an overall perspective until we get over there, you see the yellow caution tape. they took the gentleman into custody. we were the only crew set up, ready for a press conference at either 5:00 or 5:30. this woman that we are about to hear from here, that you see right here, and i will get a little closer to him as we are all doing this on the sly, because all of this has happened in the last 15, 20 minutes here. she was parked right next to the suspect being taken into custody. >> he got out of the car, individually, he was taken down to the ground by them. >> could you see anybody else in the area, people who might be working in the area? >> there was a photographer standing near me. other than that, there was not anyone. everyone has been told to go
5:20 pm
inside and shelter-in-place, so a lot of people were not out. quiet, you know, he did not react much when he was taken down. it all happened very, yeah, calm ly. >> we were talking a little while ago. they were looking for a maroon suv with a male in it, and that was the arrest that was made, a male was in there. knowing the gravity of everything, what are your emotions now, knowing that this was a person who could have possibly been involved in these other cases? have not gotten any confirmation of that yet, but your thoughts? >> what i know, the reason i came down here tonight is because i am part of the agricultural and food systems community here in town, and like the rest of the nation, is under a lot of pressure, these folks
5:21 pm
are under an intense amount of stress in their everyday lives coming from a multitude of directions, and it results in incidents like this. and so i came down here to find out what i could about, like, the situation. i was not expecting to get that close to it. that was a little closer my comfort, but it -- it amazes me that we are under this kind of stress. for to come here, to half moon bay, a very quiet, agricultural community. >> since you are part of the agricultural community, i know it is early, but have you heard from anybody else in the community who might recognize this person at this point? >> i have not. everyone down at the soil form, you know, all of their employees were safe, the mushroom farm i've passed on my way into here, and i knew from some
5:22 pm
from downtown commit was likely involved. >> described that moment one more time, and we are live now, but describe that moment when you can about your car, and police had signaled to you at that moment to stay away. what did they say to you, and how close for you to him and your car? >> i was -- my driver-side door was alongside his, so i was on the passenger side of it, tried to get something out of my passenger seat, so i was a car away from him, but i was still incredibly close. he was very quiet about letting me know. i was tryin whoever was in the car, so it was settled -- subtle. >> they told you to stand back. where their guns out at that point? >> not yet, now. they pulled their guns when the photographer and i were clear of the scene. >> friends and colleagues of other farms, do you know anyone involved in this or may have seen what happened? >> no, i don't, but i work here
5:23 pm
at the farmers market, where this incident happened, where the takedown, at least, happened, so i know a large number of the folks in the town, growing stuff, and only folks trying to make a living off of it and the community at large. >> you work here -- >> i have not worked here in a number of years, but it is not what we -- we normally have a beautiful, locally-focused community farmers market here that is on saturday this is sad. >> just saying a couple of days ago, there was a water rescue. >> right down at the beach, couple of days ago, we had a beautiful water rescue, where two lifeguards went to the ocean at desk and somehow came out an hour later with someone who had
5:24 pm
been pulled by the king times and rip -- king tides and tides that we have around here. that was amazing news. >> thank you, katie. glad you are healthy. right now, we are going to back up, as we continue to go live out here, an area that is still roped off with yellow crime scene tape out here, as officers going through this area, and working to get to the bottom of this. when we possible press conference could happen, we will certainly update you, but what a tense afternoon it has been out here in half moon bay. dan, ama, now back to you. ama: j.r., hopeful still hear me. since that person was taken into custody, right there where you were in that area, any idea, indication why they were there, possibly turn themselves in? obviously we do not have any information at this point, but have authorities been able to give you any info? j.r.: they have not.
5:25 pm
we have been talking with one of the officers out here who had initially said we are going to talk around 5:00, 5:30. i had walked to the community center, and it was when we came back that i heard the shouting for him to get on the ground. they took him into custody right after that. it happened so fluidly. i think they are trying to get a grip on things, too. i mean, you literally had two or three police officers who took him into custody in that video, and then within 30, 40 seconds, you had dozens of officers that were out here. i think they're trying to figure out at this point, was he here to turn himself in? katie, you heard from a little while ago, she said when she pulled in initially, she did not notice in there, but then noticed that car a bit later, sitting there, but she did not notice him doing anything out of the ordinary. dan: j.r., have you heard anything about any kind of weapons being recovered at all? j.r.: i have not. i, you know, katie did not see
5:26 pm
any weapons in that car. i was a thin -- i was within 10, 15 feet of that car, could not see anything from the windows. the back windows appear to be tinted. we did not see any weapons being taken out at that point, but we were pushed back pretty quick. so while we were there, you know, 10, 15, 20 feet from that situation, once those other officers came in, we had to move back right away. dan: ok, j.r., thanks very much. ama: all right, let's go back to gloria rodriguez, who is on the scenes of one of the shootings. do we have gloria right now? dan: gloria is there. ama: clarify exactly where you are? we have heard a couple different names. we've heard concord farms, we've heard mountain mushroom farm. can you clarify exactly the scene where you are? gloria: it is confusing, yeah. right now, we are near mountain
5:27 pm
mushroom farm, and this is state route 92. this is also the same location where spanish town shop are, so there are some shop out here. -- shops out here. it is hard to see where we are, but we are told mountain mushroom farm is behind a spirit we cannot see any signs, but people are saying that is where one of the shootings happened. behind us, you can see the activities. we have seen the district attorneys investigators have just arrived here. we have to show the coroner here on the scene, the sheriffs office. the investigation is continuing here. they have taped off this entire area, and they have kept the workers pretty much behind this crime tape, so we have not been able to talk to any of the workers out here. but they are all kind of sitting down right now near a tree. they have been out here for hours. the looks on their faces is just terrified.
5:28 pm
we know that this is just really impacting the community very hard. now, again, mountain mushroom farm, we are in that area here near the spanishtown state route 92, also known as san mateo road. little confusing, because this road is known by both names. we are told that the other shooting scene is south of downtown half moon bay on highway one, so we are at one of the scenes. we are told from the san mateo sheriff's office that they will be talking to the media, hopefully to clarify a lot of these questions that a lot of us have about exactly what is going on here, so they tell us they will be talking to the media out here where we are. they have taped off the area. they do not have anybody who is actually talking to the media here. i asked when the officers if they can ask the sheriff if they will talk to us here, so we are
5:29 pm
waiting to get more information. live in half moon bay, gloria rodriguez, abc 7 news. ama: gloria, thank you p this is what happens in breaking news situations, lots of information coming in, information changes, and especially with two different scenes. dan: exactly right, and we know that three were killed that one scene, one at another. we are sorting it all out as it comes in. let's go now to amanda del castillo. she is at another one of the scenes, one of the forms on highway one with the latest. -- farms on highway 1 with the latest. amanda? ama: we can hear her a little bit, but we want to work on that. dan:dan: i think we got her. go ahead. try again, amanda. amanda: can you hear me now? ok, wonderful. i was saying that the scene next-door is right next door to a trucking company. the owner they are mentioning to us that he did not happen at that scene. instead, they remember waiting
5:30 pm
on hearing from a relative that happened just beyond the truck back there at a mushroom farm is how that person is describing it. about a few minutes ago, we saw the sheriff's office come by with some large lighting equipment, really signaling to us that it is going to take some time, really trying to get down to the bottom of what happened here this afternoon in half moon bay. right now, we are on 2125 cabrillo highway. you can tell a lot of people use this road to get by. people would not have known that there is a mushroom farm back here is what the family member is telling me. they got a call about an hour ago saying something horrible had happened at this location. so that person rushed here, that person being a brother of someone who works at the mushroom farm. something horrible had happened, rushed out the door. his kids followed. that is why spoke with, the kid telling me his uncle had worked here for a decade, and people would not know about the
5:31 pm
mushroom farm and leslie actually knew about it. that nephew talking about all at
