the sheriff says he lives in half moon bay. the sheriff says the who was identified as 67-year-old chunli's out -- li zhao. it is believed he was acting alone. we have live team coverage this morning beginning with jobina to look at the timeline. jobina: there were three key locations in half moon bay where this horrific shooting took place. the scene of the first shooting was a mushroom farm on highway 92. the second scene was a mushroom farm on highway one and the suspect was taken into custody at the sheriff's substation. deputies were called to the first scene at 2:22 yesterday afternoon. they found four people dead and one critically injured at mountain mushroom farm shortly after they found three people shot to death at nearby concorde

farms. investigators had identified a suspect and the search was on. at 4:40 suspect sitting in his car at the parking lot of the sheriff's office. they said they found a gun inside his car. >> i would also like to commend the deputy sheriffs for safely taking the suspect into custody. jobina: wasthe suspected gunman was taken into custody. you can see him there in a redshirt. he was inside a maroon suv. police say they believe he acted alone and there is no further threat to the community. kumasi: we are hearing about how close this agricultural community is. many getting painful news about their family or friends. gloria rodriguez is live mountain mushroom farm with more

on that part of the story. gloria: as somebody who lives here on the san mateo coast i can tell you that is so true that this community is very tightknit. i was getting a lot of text messages as this was happening from people hearing about what was going on and people telling each other to stay safe and now everybody associate can up by what happened. -- everybody is so shaken up i what happened. they did take down some of the crime tape so we were able to get closer but there is crime tape in front of the mushroom farm where this happened. this is where police found four people dead, one person critically injured, and not far from here they found another three people shot to death at concorde farms. we have footage we want to show you. a center has been set up at the ids home in half moon bay. we understand some families who

live at the farms were displaced by the shooting. some were staying at the home. half moon bay residents collected food and blankets for the family and the children displaced by the mass shooting. >> i walked to my boss office at 4:00 and i said there are four people dead in my town and i have to go. the farmworkers have a rough life as it is in this is terrible. >> there is a lot of sadness, there is grief. it affects me because i have four boys and i cannot imagine what those kids witnessed today. gloria: volunteers say families could be there for the next two days and they are still gathering items for those affected and residents say so many in this community were already affected by the recent floods. some were displaced because their homes were flooded. a lot of people were without

power for days and now this is going on in this small community. i was here yesterday as well. i saw there were a lot of farmworkers who are out there. they were keeping them here as they were questioning them. i saw children out here yesterday. somebody did say there were children on the scene when this happened. so tragic. gloria rodriguez, abc 7 news. reggie: concorde farms put out a statement saying "with a little information available to us at the moment our comments are limited. we think the outpouring of thoughts and support from the community. we think law enforcement for their swift response and actions." they go on to say "with no past knowledge we are shook and very eager to gain more information. our hearts are with the and their families and the chinese-american community from

half moon bay to monterey park." half moon bay is relatively small coastal community. there is just over 11,000 people who live there. half moon bay is just under 30 miles south of san francisco in western san mateo county. one of the things the city is known for is its annual pumpkin festival, which brings people to the bay area across the country. kumasi: family members are telling us some of the relatives are among the victims. lena howland joining us live from the sheriff's substation with more on this. lena: we are at the sheriff substation only feet away from where that suspect was originally taken into custody yesterday evening. we also know there are seven families in this tightknit community waking up without their loved ones. their lives forever changed after yesterday's tragedy. at concorde farms yesterday we

met carlos martinez, who told us his uncle works there where three people were shot been killed only hours earlier. throughout the evening martinez and others arriving at the location, attempting to piece together what answers they could , but his repeated calls to his uncle went unanswered. >> my dad got a call saying mushroom farm got shot up by someone and he basically left us, drove over here, and then my mom gets a call from my dad, he is crying, sank my brother is in there, he has not been answering his calls. we are just worried because he is not answering his calls or anything like that and they're not letting anyone in or out. they're also not telling us who the deceased are. lena:

vepeople died and c.. mn deputies are dispatched to san mateo road where they found four people shot dead and another hurt. shortly after authorities found three more people dead at a second scene. the suspect is in custody. deputies have not announced a motive but sources tell abc 7 all of the victims were his coworkers. deputies believe he acted alone and there is no threat to the community. governor newsom is reacting to the shooting, expressing his frustration over another mass shooting happening in california. in a tweet the governor wrote "at the hospital meeting with victims of a mass shooting when

"i have directed my ministration torture local authorities and the broader half moon bay community they have the full support of the federal government in the wake of this heinous attack." reggie: multiple gunshot victims are recovering this morning after a shooting at an oakland gas station where one person was killed. police are investigating the shooting at this valero gas station in east oakland. there were no victims at the scene but they found several shell casings. the victim self transported to area hospitals. we do not know about their condition. u.s. district judge will hold a hearing on the federal oversight

of the oakland police department following allegations of officer misconduct last week. the report prompted oakland's mayor to put the police chief on administrative leave. yesterday armstrong spoke about the allegations and demanded he be immediately reinstated. he claims he took appropriate action after an officer was accused of having a car crash which ripped the bumper off a neighbor's car and fired a gun inside police headquarters. >> i placed that officer on administrative leave as result of that but neither the department nor myself as chief of police ever had the opportunity to participate in the investigative or disciplinary process because it was adopted by the federal monitor who took the investigation out of my hands so he could handle it himself. reggie: the oakland police department has been under federal oversight for 20 years. armstrong and his attorney claimed the federal monitor took over their investigation as part of an effort to extend the

oversight set to end in may. the mayor will decide if armstrong is reinstated. kumasi: in san francisco a supervisor is sounding the alarm over what he is calling a catastrophic staffing shortage at the city's police department. during a board meeting the supervisor is expected to submit a proposal today to remedy the issue. it calls to match any recruitment bonus offered by another law enforcement department in northern california. san francisco currently offers a $5,000 signing bonus for officers from another department but there are none for new recruits. dorsey's resolution will develop a plan for reaching a recommended police staffing number of 2200 officers within fo we take y ia sharp picture. it is breezy as you go up in elevation. you can see diablo is gusting to 44.

federal government in the wake of this heinous attack." the president continued "i once again urge both chambers of congress to act quickly and deliberately assault weapons ban to my desk and take action to keep american communities, schools, workplaces, and homes safe." governor newsom tweeting "at the hospital meeting with victims of a mass shooting when i get pulled away to be briefed about another shooting, this time in half moon bay. tragedy upon tragedy." the governor was talking about last weekend's lunar new year shooting in monterey park. the san mateo board of supervisors president david pied reacted. >> this is a horrific event, one we would never imagine what a current san mateo county. gun violence in this country is at completely unacceptable levels. it has really hit home. lena: former congress member jackie spear shared her thought on the situation, writing "a

there were 691 mass shootings in 2021, and 38 so far in 2023, which is more than the number of calendar days we have had this year. reggie: it is the latest in a string of mass shootings we have seen in the past several years. in may of 2021 of gunmen opened fire at the bta light-rail facility in san jose, he killed nine people and himself. all of the victims were vta employees who helped maintain the railyard during the pandemic. an independent investigator found there was no prior warning the shooter was planning an attack. halloween of 2019, five people died and four others hurt at a gathering billed as an airbnb mansion party. police say multiple gunmen stuck weapons past the security guard before the massacre. five people were arrested. a few months before, who could forget the bloodshed at the gilroy garlic festival in the chaos when three people died including a six-year-old boy. 17 others were hurt.

cleanup effort and concern after the storms we have seen in orinda. this man's home is deemed unsafe because it could slide down a hill. he will be living at a friends house for their first siebel future. -- for the foreseeable future >> they red tagged us and said we had to move out. the reason we had to move out is because they saw movement and they are concerned. the event may not be over. reggie: another home already slid off its foundation. crews are monitoring the area daily. kumasi: abc has learned oakland unified's budget report has been downgraded from positive to qualified which means the district might not be able to meet its financial obligations. this came after the school board reversed a plan to close five schools to keep the support staff at those schools. it is estimated it will cost the district more than $5 million a year.
