he used a semi automatic handgun that had been legally purchased. there are eight asian and hispanic descent. the loan -- remains in the hospital with life-threatening injuries. ama: we have our reporters finding out information about the suspects, victims, and investigation. let's begin with stephanie sierra with new details. stephanie: minutes, sources have confirmed to the i team how deputies found the alleged suspect in the parking lot of the sheriff's substation at half moon bay. he was reportedly found laying down in his car, the lexus suv with the seat fully reclined on

the semi automatic handgun beside him. we are told he tried to send his wife a text saying something along the lines of, see you in the next life. investigators are not trying to speculate what he meant but it is one of the many questions yet to be answered. new details unfolding about the mass shooting suspect. investigators say the 66-year-old has made -- half moon bay resident worked at mushroom farm as a forklift driver. sources tell targeted all eight victims, believed to be coworkers. investigators say it appears he had built up anger and what was described as an ongoing feud with the victims. aside from a prior restraining order with a former roommate, the suspect had no criminal history or known mental health

issues. >> no specific indicators would have led us to believe he was capable of something like this. stephanie: the gun he used was illegally purchased and owned. there appeared to be a language barrier between the suspect, who spoke chinese, and some spanish-speaking victims. first responders witnessed him leaving the first farm in maroon suv before heading 3 miles away where the second shooting took place. shortly after, investigators pinged his phone. investigators are looking into whether he tried sending a text to his wife before he was taken to the ground and arrested. >> we have never had this many deaths at one scene.

stephanie: we just confirmed from several sources that at least 15 others were here at mountain mushroom farm when the shooting took place and were not targeted. this reinforces the message we have been hearing from police of both farms that the act was intentional and targeted. ama: can you talk a little bit about what happens next in the investigation? stephanie: we are told arraignment will be tomorrow it will: 30 and we will learn -- will be at 1:30 and we will learn about the charges filed against him. as far at the mushroom farm's, you can see behind me that they are closed. investigators walking towards us in the distance continue casing the properties as the

investigation is only in the beginning stages. dan: the i team has learned details about the shooter's background. court documents filed in santa clara county say he had a history of making threats in the workplace. in 2013, a roommate he worked with got a restraining order and claimed that the suspect h been fired and threatened to kill him if he did not get his job back. he also tried to suffocate him with a pillow. ama: governor newsom has an impassioned plea for gun reform. >> we cannot do this alone and we feel like we are. we are getting what the hell do

i have to lose? i am still waiting for kevin mccarthy, the leader of the house of representative, we have not heard one word from him. not since monterey park. not what happened here. not one word. not even an expression of prayers. condolences. nothing. where has he been on gun safety reform? where is the republican party been on it? they have blocked at every step of the way. one state cannot do it alone. shame on them and shame on those who allow and perpetuate that to be rewarded politically. shame on them. shame on the judges that are rolling back the laws we have established in california. shame on them. you deserve better. we deserve better. ama: he said progressive gun

reforms that were in place from 1993 to 2017 resulted in a 55% reduction in gun deaths. dan: other leaders who represent the area made a stop at community organizations to offer support. zach fuentes spoke with many who expressed frustration with the progress in gun safety reform. zach: just like the rest of the community, local leaders at all levels are trying to process what happened in the last 24 hours. they say they are here to offer emotional support but they are also looking to see what they can do to help legislatively to prevent another tragedy like this from happening. as the investigation into the half moon bay shootings are current -- continue, recovery is just beginning. >> witnesses have shared with us that he targeted people. he knew exactly who he was going

after. right in the face. so there is a great deal of pain and trauma in the community and a lot of the discussion is what we need to do next in assisting the community. zach: berman says just one ago he was at a vigil for victims in the monterey park shooting. >> and out 24 hours later, here we are in my district -- and now 24 hours later, here we are in my district. zach: a nonprofit is providing support to those impacted by the shootings, including those displaced by the investigation. many of them are farmworkers. >> and monterey park there was frustration with family and people the gunmen knew.

that happens all over the world every minute. but what does not happen all over the world is mass shootings. zach: he plans to work with the governor to look at further action. >> i think we will be going to the drawing board to see what else we can do. zach: a feeling echoed by berman. >> the average gun death per capita in california, we save 1800 lives a year in california. a massive amount of life not lost. but there is still loss of life happening and we need to do more and figure out how to get guns out of the hands of unstable people who should not have access to them. zach: these local leaders have been touring the area for weeks because it was hit so hard by recent storms. this community has been through so much. leaders say it is resilient but the lives that are lost and the

hurt will remain. dan: remain for time, obviously. zach, people are trying to find ways to express their feelings. what have you heard about vigils or community gatherings? zach: the city of half moon bay say at this point they will not have a vigil. they have spoken with families directly impacted by the tragedy who say they are not ready at this point. monterey park has a vigil later today and they stand in solidarity with the families of victims. there is a memorial on main street. all are welcome to add to it. it says as a community, we grieve on that sign. and the community is definitely grieving. ama: we are learning more details about the victims. our reporter spoke with family and friends who say this was

unfathomable. reporter: at least three victims are latino so the mexican consulate is working with those families. i spoke with a cousin of victims . they are praying that has -- a cousin who is still in the hospital survives. in tears, she opened up about some friends she lost. one of them was josé, a regular at her grocery store. >> he would come here and talk with me all the time. i would see his smile. here. reporter: josé told maria he is thinking about leaving half moon bay because business was down. the mexican consulate confirmed three of the victims were from mexico. one of them is still in hospital. >> my other friend died,

i had known him for 15 years. reporter: down the road from the mushroom farm, we spoke with alayna at her fruit stand. afraid and has been dreading finding out who was killed. at the nonprofit headquarters, family members gather while the community came together to support. >> we brought water and some food bars because it is what we have and we just need to contribute somehow. things were on an upward spin. but this is shocking. reporter: maria is still processing the heartbreaking reality that she will not see her friends again. >> i miss him. i miss josé. both, i miss. reporter: our hearts go out to the families.

several others were injured as they tried to get away. it happened around 6:00 p.m. at a gas station. today the mayor and police talked about the incident and suzanne phan has more. reporter: shootings in oakland on monday it rattled the community. many are deeply disturbed, given the recent shootings in half moon bay and monterey park. >> this is the third mass shooting in california and less than a week. reporter: a total of five people were shot in east oakland. one died, three others were hurt in a car crash connected to the shooting. >> approximately 40 to 50 people were at a location where people were filming a music video. during the recording, gun fire broke out from multiple shooters in various directions. reporter: those who were hurt got themselves to the hospital.
