santos, the congressman who fabricated his life story under more pressure, the new revelations about his campaign funds. fire beware the new warning about criminals using skimming devices to steal your credit card information how to protect yourself and later does eating cheese before bed really caused nightmares may sound silly, but there's a new effort to find out. from abc news in new york. this is america this morning. good morning, everyone . i'm andrew denver, fujian for rhiannon. we begin with january tornadoes hitting the south and heavy snow hitting the north. the radar active overnight, a severe storm slammed the south from texas into southern louisiana. extensive damage and some injuries have been reported on the northern side of the storm up to eight inches of snow in parts of the midwest this morning, and that's headed to the northeast. the risk for severe weather shifted into southern louisiana overnight. the sheriff of beauregard parish

, saying a possible tornado damaged several homes before the line of strong storms took aim. new orleans' the national weather service reported likely water spout forming over lake pontchartrain that moving onshore around midnight. sometimes it's not the same storm system, causing extensive damage in texas. tearing apart homes and businesses in the houston suburb of pasadena. my 25 years here, that's probably the worst damage that i've seen . we have four of us in this building when the tornado hit, a local crossfit owner and his customers were forced to seek cover in the bathroom of his gym. scariest thing i've ever seen, like we were sitting there trying to shut. we had overhead door right here. they blew off and i was trying to shut it, and i couldn't shut it and all of a sudden it just blew out and that's when we ran to the restrooms. and we just watched a building just come apart and then fall down, had to fight out because of building fell on top of us, but i mean, you know laws were alive. we're good dance instructor escaping a tornado as it tore apart her studio. it's just praying and all i know is

they were all hunkered down together, but glass was flying. at one point, authorities warned of several commercial trucks overturned on the beltway around houston. the powerful winds also causing damage in houston itself. the mayor tweeting a wastewater facility suffered significant damage, but it's still functioning. meanwhile the northern side of the storm system is making the morning commute. mess in the midwest, with snow from indianapolis to cleveland, up to eight inches in some areas, the snow is spreading into pennsylvania, upstate new york and interior new england later today. as for those storms in the south, they will spread from northern florida to the carolinas. today we'll check your forecast and just a few minutes several new developments this morning after the mass shootings in california , two of them within 48 hours and now calls for change, not just in gun regulation, but also in the way police alert the public about suspects on the run. in california. last night, hundreds of people gathered at city hall in monterey park, remembering the victims of saturday's dancehall shooting and leaving handwritten messages

condolences to the victims. mccarthy said he would not commit to new gun laws until he had more information about the shooting. these two individuals seem much different, too. older and age, not understanding why this transpired horrendous activity of what they've done. were there signs ahead of time that we could have found. meanwhile new questions about police actions after the monterey park shooting, it took authorities five hours to alert the public that the gunman was on the loose. police say he eventually died by suicide. the sheriff says they were strategic when releasing information. but what expert says it highlights the need for a national system to notify the public when a shooter is on the run similar to the amber alert system that could immediately set off alerts. on cell phones and post warnings on highway signs. investigators are still trying to determine a motive for the monterey park shooting. after months of resistance, the u. s is expected to supply ukraine with dozens of abrams tanks. it would still take months before any of the tanks get to the war zone, but the move gives germany political cover to send german made leopard tanks to ukraine.

leader of the church for as long as he can. speaking to the associated press, the 86 year old said he's in good health for his age, he said recent criticism about his policies from high ranking church officials is bothersome. but he said it shows there's freedom to speak. he also discussed homosexuality, saying it is not a crime, he said laws against it are unjust. the fda is proposing new limits on the levels of lead in baby food. the move would require manufacturers to lower lead exposure by up to 27% the proposal could be finalized after a public comment period can impair brain development. that's especially dangerous for young children. a missing hiker has been found safe in the same california mountain were actor julian sands is reported missing nearly two weeks ago. 75 year old jincheng was rescued two days after going missing on mount baldy. he was able to walk on his own search continues for sam's. his family released a statement thanking search teams and time now for a look at your wednesday weather.
