53 the current temperature santa rosa, near 60 in the city. down to 39 in palo alto, we have a wide range of temperatures this morning it is quite windy in our hills, hawkeye gusting at 50 mile per hour. from time to time this morning, it has been gusting over 50 miles per hour. when you have offshore wind coming out of the northeast, rolls down the hillside and warms up. that is why we have temperatures in the upper 50's to low 60's, it is breezy. this is the east bay hills camera, it is bouncing around. gusty start to the day in the hills, near the surface it is not bad. breezy and mild, yesterday we had spots in the 70's. the mild air continues. as we head toward the weekend, cooler changes. reggie:

seven people who died in monday's mass shooting and half moon bay, -- in half moon bay. shot, he is a survivor. migrants and two of them are mexican migrants. kumasi: lena howland is in half moon bay where a memorial continues to grow. lena: this tightknit community is just starting the grieving process and trying to understand why something like this could have happened. flowers, candles and signs have been left behind in honor of the

seven people killed at the growing memorial off of main street in half moon bay. josé perez was one of the seven people killed. he worked at the mushroom farm with his younger brother pedro, who got him the job. he took this photo to send to his family, who is still back in mexico. he leaves behind for children. we spoke with his cousin, who described the moment he called his cousin's wife and kids to tell them josé had been killed. >> [speaking foreign language] >> c why are you saying this? this is alive. here is not a cousin, he is like a brother. lena: josé' pedro, is he is still in the hospital recovering from his injuries. he and some of have dreamed of going back to mexico one day to be back with their families, not only josé's body will. reggie: the man shootings expected back in court february 16. yesterday, he tried to hide his face behind a yellow piece of paper during his first court appearance. the suspect is a citizen of china and had assistance from a mandarin interpreter. he only spoke when the judge asked tim to verify his name. the district attorney asked the judge to order no bail. the judge agreed. >> under california constitution, anytime somebody is a danger to the community, the court has a right to hold

them in bail any charge. this is the highest number of charges, seven counts of murder. a case with one instance seven murders at once, he is not a citizen of this country. there is plenty of motive to run. for that reason, it was a straightforward and simple request for no bail. reggie: the suspect had two attorneys appointed to him in court who will now review the case before the next hearing. kumasi: if you would like to support the farmworker community around half moon bay, a local organization is raising money. the group established a half moon bay strong fund. you can find a link to donate at abc7news.com. they are grateful for monetary donations from across the bay area during this difficult time. california has been hit with one disaster after another in the short new year. first, historic storms, than to mass shootings in less than a week.

if you want to help, there are things to know. fundraisers are popping up for victims of the shootings and storms, it is not uncommon to see scammers create fake websites or social media posts claiming they are raising money for victims. scammers might hack into social media accounts and send direct messages. >> connected to the cause. a lot of times, that either have the city incorrect, they have zip codes and images are distorted. those are huge red flags. kumasi: donate only unsecure platforms that encrypt bank information. the url should begin with https and show a lock icon in the corner. reggie: today is the last day for monterey county residents impacted by the storm to get help at the veteran memorial building. kumasi: they give people access to county, state and federal resources. it is open today from 9:00 to

7:00 our media partners report storm damage is likely to top $120 million. the county plans to open another help center at a different location on saturday. reggie: it is the first day of the monterey county department of emergency management and air patrol unit will deliver essential goods. bottled water into bills will be sent through helicopter to communities isolated by landslides. distribution continues on friday. kumasi: in contra costa count people with storm damage are being urged to check to see if they qualify for aid. county officials say people should contact their insurance company to see what resources might be available, then contact the county. keep track of the damage and take photos. the per luminary estimate of damages around $12 million. -- preliminary estimate of damages is around $12 million. drew: the issue in the hills, it

reggie: we could see police body camera footage of the attack on congresswoman nancy pelosi's husband as soon as today. gloria rodriguez is tracking the story. it comes after a judge denied a prosecution request to keep it private. gloria: this'll be the first time we see what happened in the pelosi's san francisco home in october. abc was one of the media groups requesting the footage. a judge denied prosecutor requests to keep it secret. paul pelosi suffered a skull fracture when he was hit in the head with a hammer by an intruder who prosecutors say was targeting his wife.

the case is pending. he pleaded not guilty last month to six charges, including attempted murder. the police have said he told them there was people in washington and he wanted to harm nancy pelosi -- evil in washington and he wanted to harm they said it was important for prosecutors to share evidence that could debunk any false information about the attack. according to an attorney, the judge ruled there was no reason to keep the footage secret, especially after prosecutors plated -- played it in open court during a hearing last month. kumasi: berkeley police are asking for your help to find a suspect in an attempted kidnapping near uc berkeley's campus. jobina: get away and tell the police about the attempted kidnapping. it happened on tuesday while the woman was crossing the street at

hearst and euclid avenue. the suspect came from behind and grabbed her by the arm, threatening to assault her. here is the video police want you to see to identify the suspect. he is in the red box on your screen. the woman said after she was able to pull away, she ran to a nearby café. employees blocked the man from the woman and called the police for help. if you see the suspect or have information, contact the berkeley police department right away. reggie: today, bart directors could decide to censure one of its own members. it is over a racist comment made by the director during the board's january 12 meeting. he told her news partner he did not realize the comment was racist and said quote i am sincerely sorry and acknowledging my ignorance and sincerely apologize. if he is censured, he could be removed from his committee assignments. kumasi: encouraging news about

the covid booster shot, the cdc says it cuts the risk of symptomatic infection in half. doctors credit the shot with bringing community covid levels down after a winter surge. santa clara county is faring particularly well, nearing lows not seen since last summer. >> it seems we are coming down the mountain, hospitalizations are down. cases are down. wastewater shows that everything is looking good. >> the boosters that came out this past fall and winter service well to keep people out of the hospital from the variants circulating and even the new ones that surprised us. kumasi: the goal is to get the boosters out on a nearly basis to normalize covid like the flu. reggie: your food delivery may be getting more expensive in san francisco. a pandemic arrow ruled that let food delivery services charge restaurants 50% commission is set to expire at the end of the month.

for february 16. reggie: we learned the names of the seven people who died. they are 66-year-old qizhong cheng. 43-year-old yetao bing. 73-year-old zhishen liu. jose perez. his brother, pedro was also shot, he is the lone survivor. 50-year-old marciano martinez jimenez. 64-year-old jingzhi lu. 74-year-old aixiang zhang. lena howland is live memorial continues to grow. lena: we are at the growing memorial in half moon bay in honor of the seven people killed. i will step out of the shots he can get a better picture. just the amount of flowers, candles and signs left behind in honor of these victims. some were left behind from family members that knew the

victims, some were left behind by complete strangers all trying to understand why this happened. the victims were asian and mexican migrants, one of the seven people killed is martinez. we spoke with his brother, who remembers hearing the sirens and seeing police officers and having a feeling marciano was gone. he tried calling his brother, hoping it was not true. >> he felt a knot in your heart you could not get rid of, that is the feeling you are saying was persistent and told you your brother was one of the victims. >> he likes to play guitar sometimes he plays in the church and with friends. not just me, everybo the entire town. lena: there are 4 including the victim families, that are still waiting to go back home, staying at hotels

paid for by the mushroom farms where they live andorthis, whill considered to be an active crime scene. county officials say they are expected to be able to go home by friday as we lurk -- work to learn more about the tragedy. reggie: community in southern california continues to mourn after a mass shooting last weekend. people gathered for a candlelight vigil honoring the 11 people who died and nine people who were hurt. the vigil coincided with a visit by vice president harris, she laid flowers and took time to visit each victims photo. she called on congress to act on gun reform. >> can this congress do anything? >> they absolutely can. they have the power to. can they do something? yes. should they do something?

yes. will they do something? that is where we all must speak up. reggie: she pay her respect to the monterey park victims privately, meeting with each of their families. kumasi: another vigil will be held today for the victims in this week's mass shootings, this is happening as members of the asian-american community say the shootings in half moon bay and honorary park opted to the core. both the suspects and majority of victims were asian. it happened during the new year. they say it sent shockwaves through the community. >> to think that elderly are committing these during this time really strikes close to our hearts and families. kumasi: he also s years have been difficult because of the pandemic and spike in hate crimes that came with covid-19. he is concerned the shootings could spark some type of

the partnership of local governments and reproductive health groups work together to reinforce and protect abortion rights. those behind the coalition say it is a first of its kind group to support reproductive justice and freedom. the city of san francisco is getting ready for serious belt-tightening. what does that mean for the city moving forward? jobina: the cuts will not be easy, according to our media partners. the mayor has ordered departments to cut 5% from their budgets in the next fiscal year, than 8% the following year. she is also ordering them to preserve key policy priorities like public safety, combating homelessness and economic recovery. the mayor's budget director said yesterday quote i am telling departments and telling everyone else in the city that things could get worse. we may have to come back to departments for more. i think there are lots of difficult choices ahead. the city's estimated deficit is at $728 million.

it is blamed in part on declining business and property tax revenue. as remote work left many downtown office space is empty, the city is also seeing an increase in salary spending. we do not know how the cuts will impact specific city services, since the city departments have not decided how to make the cuts. kumasi: the lincoln high school state championship football team is celebrating its third state championship. there is a ceremony yesterday. the mayor proclaimed the day is lincoln football team day. city hall was lit up in the school colors overnight, crimson and gold. researchers are hoping to learn a lot of information from what is now just a few tiny specks. they are watching over what will grow into adult bat stars. this is part of the captive breeding program. while they are not endangered, researchers hope it helps them learn more about other species

like the giant sunflower stars. about a decade decimated several species, including the sunflower star. possibly triggered by a marine heat wave, this caused a chain effect on the ecosystem. >> the loss of this huge starfish allowed prey items, the purple sea urchin, its population to explode. with the exploding population of sea urchins came a decline in kelp. reggie: start calling them stars? i thought it was starfish. they did not like fish attached to their name. kumasi: well. reggie: they kind of are,

though. kumasi: the sunflower star is still missing, the numbers are low. researchers are also looking at which genetic traits might allow the species to survive pressures like a warming ocean or marine diseases. reggie: a french bulldog missing for more than a year from its san diego home has been reunited with his family after he was found in an abandoned car in the bay area. livermore police shared this picture of the dog, whose name is money. money is now home safe. how he wound up in the bay area, we do not know. his owners received messages asking for payment for his return, they never responded. they figured it was a scam. because the dog was chipped, a technician with the alameda county sheriffs office was able to track down the family and they made the drive to come and get money. money looks really happy. money must be very confused about the past year. kumasi: money must have been

justice department to throughout a settlement it made two years ago. they claimed they were never notified of that deal. all the justice department did not oppose today's arraignment, they are arguing the settlement deal should stand. they claim without the settlement, the government will not be able to ensure boeing follows through with reform to prevent future tragedies. estravel mess.underway the department of transportation is looking into whether executives engaged in the unrealistic scheduling of flights. southwest says it schedule was quote thoughtfully designed and there were plenty of staffing, but the computer system melted down. southwest canceled more than 16,000 flights over the christmas holiday. kumasi: a 49ers defensive end will be playing in the nfc championship this weekend, despite being arrested on monday. the head coach said the team will let the legal proceedings play out. he was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence after his girlfriend claims he pushed her
