mushroom farm with his younger brother, pedro felix perez, who gotten the job. recently, he took this photo to send to his family, who are still back in mexico. children. we spoke with his cousin. >> why are you saying this? this is a live. he was not ever cousin. he was like a brother. >> felix perez, is the lone survivor and is still in the

hospital recovering from his injuries. his cousin added that he, along with his brother and other victims, dreamed of going back to mexico to be back with their families, and now only their bodies will. live in half moon bay, lena howland, abc7news. >> the man charged in the shooting is expected back in court february 16. yesterday, he tried to hide his face using a yellow piece of paper. of course, that was in vain. the suspect is a citizen of china and spoke with the assistance of an interpreter. the da asked the judge to order no bail and the judge agreed. >> any time somebody is a danger to the community, the court has the right to hold them without bail on any charge. this is the highest number of charges, seven counts of murder, we have not had in san mateo county before. he's not a citizen of this

scammers create fake websites or social media posts laming to raise money for victims -- posts claiming to raise money for victims. >> make sure it is actually connected to the cause. a lot of the time, they either have the city incorrect, zip code incorrect, and the images are distorted. those are red flags. >> another tip, secure platforms that encrypt your bank information. the url should start with https and show a lock icon in the corner. >> it is the last day for monterey county residents impacted by recent storms to get help at the veterans memorial victim. it gives people access to resources. it is open today from 9:00 to 7:00. our partners at mercury news report storm damage is likely to top $120 million. the county plans to open another help center at a different location saturday.

warmer by 30 degrees in santa rosa compared to this time yesterday because we have gusty winds in the hills. the strongest gusts are in excess of 50 miles an hour. the reason why, we have high pressure off the coast, low pressure over the four corners. we call this a pressure gradient. these two features are opposing forces that are close together. that is creating a wind tunnel effect. as those winds roll down our hillsides, they speed up because of gravity and warm up because they are getting compressed as they roll down the hillside. that is why you have warmer temperatures. gusty winds. they do back off as the day goes on. much later in the afternoon, but still sunny and mild, mid and upper 60's. cooler weather does move in for the weekend. we will talk about that in eight minutes. >> thank you. we have a new crash reported now on the san mateo bridge, westbound 92, right in the

>> berkeley police are looking for your help to find a suspect in an attempted kidnapping. jobina with the images investigators want us to see. >> the victim was able to get away and tell police about the attempted kidnapping tuesday when the women was crossing the street to euclid avenue. she says the suspect came from behind and grabbed her by the arm, threatening to assault her. here's a video police want you to see. the suspect is in the red box. the woman said, after she was able to pull away, she ran to a nearby café. employees block the man from the woman and called for help. if you have seen the suspect or have information about him, you are asked to contact the berkeley police department. >> b.a.r.t.'s board of directors could decide to censure one of its members over a racist comment made by the director during one of its meetings.

>> there are new accusations in the case of a virginia teacher shot by a six-year-old student. the district was reportedly warned several times about potential violence. the school board has voted to fire the superintendent. parents and the teacher's attorney are outraged by what they call a pattern of inaction. they say the school missed or ignored red flags. >> three times school administration was warned by concerned teachers and employees that the boy had a gun on him at the school. >> shot

mushroom farms. we want to share the names of the victims. survived. those seven people. the community has been leaving candles, flowers and signs all over town. lena howland is live in half moon bay with more on how some of the victims loved ones are remembering them. lena? >> that is right. we are at the growing memorial in half moon bay in honor of the seven people killed monday. you can see behind me, there are dozens upon dozens of flowers, candles and signs from families and friends that knew the victims and also complete strangers, all trying to

understand why this happened. the victims were asian and mexican migrants. one of the seven people killed is marciano martinez. he worked at the concord farms for 26 years, originally from oaxaca, mexico. we spoke with his brother, who spoke about the sirens and seeing police officers monday, and having a feeling marciano was gone, even tried calling his brother hoping it was not true. >> you felt a knot in your heart you could not get rid of. that is the feeling you are saying was persistent and what told you your brother was one of the victims. >> likes to play guitar. sometimes i think he plays in the church and with friends. not just me. it is everybody. the entire town is heartbroken. >> there are 40 families, including the victims' families, still waiting to go home, staying at hotels paid for by the farms where they live and work.

this while their farm is still considered to be an active crime scene. county officials say they expect they should be allowed to go home by friday as we work to learn more about this tragedy. live in half moon bay, lena howland, abc7news. >> to southern california, where the moderate part -- the monterey park community continues to mourn, honoring the 11 people who died and the nine people hurt. a vigil coincided with a visit by the vice president. she laid flowers at a memorial, taking time to visit each victim's photo. the vice president also called on congress to act on gun reform. >> can this congress do anything? >> they absolutely can. they have the power to. can i do something? yes. should they do something? yes. will they do something? that is where we all must speak up. >> the vice president also pay

her respects to the monterey park victims privately. >> another vigil will be held today for the victims in this week's mass shooting as members of the asian community say the shootings rocked them to the core. both of the suspects and the majority of victims were asian. it happened during the sacred lunar new year. they told abc7 the attacks sent shockwaves through the communities. >> for us to see this happen and think, you know, are committing these during these times really strikes close to our hearts and families. >> that man also said the past years have been difficult because of the pandemic and spike in hate crimes that came with covid-19. he's concerned the shootings could spark some type of retaliation. if you want to show your support, you can donate to alas, supporting the farmworker

community for a long time, and has now established a half moon bay strong fund. you can go to our website, abc7news.com/takeaction, to donate. they are grateful for monetary donations from across the bay area during this time. >> san francisco is getting ready for some serious belt-tightening. what does that mean for the city moving forward? >> we are learning these cuts will not be easy according to our media partners at the sf standard. the mayor has ordered departments to cut 5% from their budgets in the next fiscal year and 8% the following year. she has ordered them to preserve key priorities like public safety, ending homelessness and economic recovery, but the mayor's budget director said in a committee hearing yesterday, " i am telling departments and everyone else in the city that things could get worse. we may have to come back for more. i think there are lots of difficult choices ahead."

the city's estimated deficit is at $725 million. it is being blamed in part on declining business and property tax revenue as remote work has left many downtown office space is empty. the city is also seeing an increase in salary spending. we don't know how these cuts will impact specific city services since the departments have not decided how to make the cuts yet. >> new details out of the south bay, where authorities are on the hunt for multiple suspects as they investigate an armed robbery and shooting in campbell that happened at 11:00 in the morning on wednesday at a family-owned shop boulevard. police are not sharing whether the victim was an employee or customer. when victim said she was at work when she heard the shots. she initially thought it came from firecrackers for lunar new year. >> it looks like one of the workers at san jose camera on his phone, frantic and scared,

>> new developments. we could see police body camera footage of the attack on congresswoman nancy pelosi's husband as soon as today. reporter gloria rodríguez is tracking this. this comes after a judge denied a prosecution request to keep the video private. >> this will be the first time we will see what happened inside the pelosis' home. a judge denied prosecutors requests to keep the footage secret. paul pelosi suffered a skull fracture in october when he was hit in the head with a hammer by an intruder who prosecutors say

was targeting his wife. the case is pending. he pleaded not guilty last month to six charges, including attempted murder. police have said that he told them there was evil and he wanted to harm nancy pelosi because she was second in line to the presidency. news agencies argued it was important for prosecutors to publicly share evidence that could debunk false information swirling online about the attack. according to an attorney representing some of the news agencies, the judge ruled there was no reason to keep the footage secret, especially after prosecutors played it in open court during a hearing last month. >> thank you. the memphis police chief is asking the public not to react violently as the nation braces for body camera footage showing the moments tyre nichols was pulled over by police. the 29-year-old died in the hospital after he was beaten and arrested by memphis police

earlier this month. the police chief says the incident was "heinous, reckless and inhumane." nichols family's attorney say he was severely beaten. five officers were fired for violating policies, including excessive use of force. >> more questions about freshman new york congressman george santos over campaign financing. he named thomas detwiler as treasurer in filings. he says he was not involved in the campaign. his lawyer says that his name was assigned, but without his consent, which is illegal. experts now say santos could face campaign-finance violations and could be punished in congress through an ethics investigation. >> if, when we ethics, we find he has broken the law, we will remove him. >> there are also questions about money santos says he donated to his own campaign.

people want to know how someone who claims to have only made $55,000 a year could two years later donate $700,000. santos has refused to explain that one. >> federal authorities are warning nursing boards about people with fake nursing diplomas. three nursing schools based in florida sold more than 7600 fraudulent diplomas for about $15,000 each, and now they are working to make sure anyone with one of those diplomas no longer provides patient care. 25 people involved face conspiracy and fraud charges. the three schools have been shut down. as for the real nurses of the world, they will be rallying today. local actions will be held across the nation in solidarity, including san francisco, oakland and marin. the national nurses united and california nurses association will hold demonstrations to demand hospitals address staffing crises. they want the industry to provide a safe number of nurses
