we have learned from the san mateo county district attorney there was another shooting at california terra garden, previously known as mountain mushroom farm, in july of last year. tomorrow, half moon bay will hold a public vigil on main street across from city hall at mac dutra park. ama: earlier in the day, the archbishop will be visiting the sites for prayers and blessings. they are the first official events since the tragedy. dan: we have team coverage as this community moves to find healing. ama: we start with amanda del castillo with today's alarming new findings. amanda: no parking signs downtown half moon bay signal a day of healing ahead. come friday, the community is expected to fill the streets surrounding this growing memorial at mac dutra plaza. they are planning an evening vigil in support of those who were killed and those left behind. >> a terrible loss.

amanda: it is where we found jimena. she left this message, addressing what she calls the shocking living conditions for farmworkers that are only now coming to light. >> we know they open their eyes for everybody here in the country, and in california, to see what is happening, how they live. amanda: concerns that have caught the attention of many, including local and state leaders. more recently, san mateo county supervisor ray muller visited the shooting scenes on thursday. >> horrible, horrific, deplorable conditions. we saw basically what looked like sheds, storage containers that people were living in. no insulation, no running water. nowhere you would ever want to prepare food. amanda: confirming the county will have to read tag every

unit. the farm's team telling abc 7 news eight families looked on the property, adding that workers are still not back and the farm is currently not in operation. >> it shows we are out here try to make cap -- trying to make a living and some are still struggling. amanda: the community is working to heal. residents are desperate for meaningful change for farmworkers and the generations to come. >> i hope everything changes for them and for the future amanda: we know the archbishop will be in town, visiting both shooting sites, offering prayers and blessings. at 5:00, the city is hosting an official vigil here in downtown half moon bay. i'm amanda del castillo, abc 7 news. ama: so many have been asking how they can support the grieving town and those affected. consider donating to a nonprofit

that has been supporting the farmworker community since 2006. they have set up a half moon bay strong fund. go to our website for a link. dan: as the half moon bay community heels, the larger asian-american community is also grieving tonight. the attacks in half moon bay and monterey park have shaken the start of the lunar new year, usually one of the most festive celebrations on the calendar. tonight, tim johns was at a vigil in san francisco's chinatown and has more on how the community is coping. ♪ skyscrapers of downtown san francisco -- ♪ tim: music and candles met by pain in the square thursday night, where dozens gathered to remember the victims of the mass shootings in half moon bay and monterey park.

>> we ran out of candles. we could have had three times the amount of candles. i am overwhelmed by how many people were touched enough to come out and spend their evening with us. tim: she was one of the vigil's organizers. she says the shootings, which are extremely rare in the community, have shaken it to its core and come at a time of heightened anxiety. >> the trauma in our community i think has come to a boiling point for some of these individuals. we have been through years of anti-asian hate, senseless violence. tim: but thursday's vigil was about more than just remembering the lives lost. it was also a chance to discuss difficult subjects like trauma and mental health. josephine tells me those topics are often times taboo within aapi communities. she says she has been working for years to get rid of the stigma in her own culture. she believes in doing so, it will help more people fight

inner demons and prevent tragedies from happening. >> basically things we want to shove under the carpet, we don't want anyone to know, and a struggle or dispute within the family. it is ugliness of the family and we don't want it to be spread. ♪ tim: but for many here, the grieving has only just begun. >> the community is already suffering. just to physically be here and be in the presence of every one puts me in a better mii familiesd. >> become vulnerable and share how we feel, how i feel internally and what cut of help i need, than other people know how to give me the help i needed. tim: in san francisco, johns, abc 7 news.

ama: a state senator berkeley is co-authoring new gun legislation. state senators kaplan -- catherine like spears and skinner announced the bill. it is modeled after san jose's new gun legislation that would require gun owners to get liability insurance and improve gun safety. the insurance would cover any negligent or accidental use of their firearms. san jose's requirement was met by law students with gun rights groups but took effect at the start of the year. dan: new developments involving oaklands police chief. the commission met for the first time since he was placed on leave. the chief has been pushing hard to be reinstated and is blaming the federal monitor overseeing the department. a report pointed the finger at armstrong for handling of situations. they went into closed-door session for over two hours.

however, the public had plenty to say. >> for years, we have wanted to have a black police chief, and now we got him and people are trying to throw him under the bus. >> i am just calling to support chief armstrong because he has made a huge difference. dan: the commission scheduled a special session for next thursday. the naacp sent a letter to the mayor asking for his reinstatement. it closes with, removing him impacts the progress made, but most importantly diminishes the community's faith in its political leadership. ama: in the south bay, of the council seat has been secured. he will represent the district 10 seat. he previously worked in

leadership roles at ibm and intel. he is the second indian-american to win a city council seat in the state. dan: new details on the flooding that forced hundreds of residents out of their apartment building on new year's day. many are reportedly still staying elsewhere. the chronicle reports many families remain in hotels. during today's bart board of directors meeting, they called in and pleaded for help. many asked when they would be allowed to return home. the coliseum connections complex sits on bart property. that is why it is involved. it is run by a company called fpi management. ama: good improvements are being made at the oakland zoo on monday. we will learn about the plans to reopen. it is also planning to extend the glofari event. a sinkhole opened up on the maid road out front. dan: public outcry after the death of tyre nichols. the family speaking tonight after a deadly traffic stop with

with financial help through covered california, we pay way less than we ever thought we would. enrollment ends january 31st. dan: a band that prevents gay and bisexual men from donating blood will be eased according to a report in the washington post. it has been in place for decades and the fda is going to change some of the guidelines.under the proposed new rules, same-sex couples in monogamous relationships will be able to give blood. the rule went in place in the 1980's. the proposal is expected to be adopted following public comment. ama: the family of 29-year-old tyre nichols held an emotional vigil tonight in memphis, tennessee. he died earlier this month three days after being pulled over at a traffic stop. the police officers were charged today in his death. they face felony charges, including second-degree murder, aggravated assault, and kidnapping. the family's lawyers say he was

beaten for three minutes in the traffic stop, sending him to the hospital, leading to his death. at tonight's vigil, his mother spoke about the police bodycam video set to come out tomorrow. >> i didn't see it, but from what i hear it is going to be horrific. but i want each and every one of you to protest in peace. ama: protests are planned in memphis, and police are on alert. locally, oakland police have not heard of any protests at this point. police in san francisco say they are monitoring demonstrations. dan: happening to malcolm a police -- happening tomorrow, police bodycam footage will be released. nancy pelosi has not seen it. >> i don't know if i will see it. it will be a very hard thing to see, an assault on my husband's life. dan: paul pelosi's skull was

fractured when he was hit with a hammer by an intruder who broke into the family's house in san francisco. prosecutors say nancy pelosi was the target. the former speaker of the house says her husband has at least three more months of recovery ahead of him. but he was seen last week at the white house during the warriors championship celebration. there he is in the black hat on the left side of the screen talking with draymond green. ama: it seems bart still has an extreme problem getting people to ride. if it doesn't change, leaders could be forced to make cuts. about 150,000 people are riding bart each day. about 70% of bart's historically has come from fares. federal funding eight is expected to run out by 2025. at today's meeting, bart said the worst case scenario could include fewer trains, mass layoffs, cancel we can service, even entire stations being shuttered. dan: new at 11:00, let the game

68 degrees at sfo. that broke the previous record of 66 setback in 2014. 70's from redwood city to santa rosa. plenty warm. seven to 13 degrees above average. things are changing already. temperatures in the 40's and 50's, compared to 24 hours ago. way lower. we are talking 22 degrees lower in santa rosa. 13 degrees cooler in concord. down 16 in fairfield. if you are wondering why, the winds gusting in the hills over 60 miles an hour this morning have pretty much eased. we still have a stunning view. much cooler in the morning with areas of fog. temperatures lower through the morning. there is a slight chance of showers sunday. here is the controlling factor that brought us the mild weather today. there is a system diving down from the north, and that will set the stage for cooler

days and chillier mornings ahead. patchy fog showing up on the doppler. it will be with us tomorrow morning. a quick update on the drought monitor. we have seen some improvement statewide in the past week. the moderate category went from 92% of the state to 90%. 43% was in the severe category, now down to 33%. slight improvement locally as well. the lowest category, which is dry, for santa cruz county. hopefully we will continue to see changes. in the morning, 30's to 50's. patchy fog right along the coastline and in our north bay valleys mid-50's to the low 60's. thus forward to sunday, you notice the cold system comes down. it will bring in a slight risk of showers.
