to the death of tyre nichols. his family urging for calm as authorities brace for what's to come. this morning, outrage over the roles prosecutors say five ex-memphis police officers played in the death of tyre nichols. >> frankly, i'm shocked. i'm sickened by what i saw. it's absolutely appalling. let me be clear. what happened here does not at all reflect proper policing. this was wrong. this was criminal. >> reporter: tadarrius bean, demetrius haley, desmond mills jr., justin smith, and emmitt martin iii all facing felony criminal charges including second-degree murder and aggravated kidnapping and assault. >> they're facing a second-degree murder charge instead of a first degree, because first-degree murder priors premeditation. we all know that a traffic stop should not result in a death. >> reporter: the nichols family attorney telling abc news, five officers being held criminally accountable for their deadly and brutal actions gives us hope as we continue to push for justice

for tyre. the now former officers were part of a street crime unit known as scorpion. all five fired about two weeks after nichols was pulled over for alleged reckless driving. >> the families are relieved that they terminated the officers in a swift manner and they also are thankful that the charges were brought today. >> reporter: the district attorney says there were two confrontations on january 7th. >> one running on foot. >> reporter: in the first he says pepper spray was deployed and nichols ran away. >> subject fighting at this time. >> reporter: the second more physical. >> there was another altercation at a nearby location at which the serious injuries were experienced by mr. nichols after some period of time of waiting around afterwards, he was taken away by an ambulance. >> reporter: the 29-year-old critically injured dying three days later. his family sharing this photo of

him, his face bruised and swollen. attorneys for two of the former officers mills and martin saying their clients intend to plead not guilty. abc news reached out to smith, bean, and haley but have not heard back. >> no one out there that night intended for tyre nichols to die. >> when it's time to defend our clients, our side of things will come out. >> reporter: as law enforcement across the country brace for protests, expected to follow the anticipated release of the videos showing tyre's arrest, overnight his mom urging calm. >> it's going to be horrific. but i want each and every one of you to protest in peace. i don't want us burning up our cities, tearing up the streets because that's not what my son stood for. >> reporter: george, the mayor here said that they launched an

internal review of operations and policies of their specialized units. george, a federal civil rights investigation is also under way. >> why did they decide to release the tape tonight, not earlier? >> reporter: officials here said that they first wanted to take the proper legal steps. they also wanted the nichols family to take a look at the video privately, before they released it. >> thanks. we go overseas now, where military officials say the u.s. has conducted a risky raid in northern somalia killing a senior isis leader and several other militants. our chief global affairs correspondent has the latest. good morning, martha. >> reporter: good morning, michael. this morning, the elite american special operations team that carried out this dramatic raid in africa is safe and back at their base and the pentagon says a top isis leader and at least ten isis fighters are dead.

the raid was launched in darkness. u.s. helicopters descending on a cave complex in northern somalia. the special operations team had hoped to take the isis leader bilal al sudani alive but the pentagon says the americans were met with intense gunfire making that impossible. president biden gave the final approval for the risky raid before it was launched. the team had been practicing for weeks using mock-ups of the target area and making practice rnweresecretary of defensehis harmed in the raid and the operation leaves the u.s. safer and more secure. linsey. >> that is good news, martha, thank you. now to the latest on the war in ukraine. russian forces are intensifying their attacks on the country as a new barrage of missile strikes across the country kill at least 11 people. tom soufi burridge is on the scene for us once again in ukraine. good morning, tom.

>> reporter: yeah, good morning, linsey. russia now escalating its offensive in this region according to a senior ukrainian official wherein the largest ukrainian-held city on the edge of the combat, we've been hearing intense fighting in the distance and our team has seen up close the heavy toll for ukrainian troops. this morning, russia's relentless bombardment of cities in the east escalating as its troops try and seize more land. ukrainian forces now facing a sustained assault at new points along the front line. according to ukraine's military governor here, civilians still living among the fighting. two more people killed in this region overnight, say officials. our team witnessing the heavy cost for ukrainian troops. this is a military field hospital. soldiers are rushed here on a constant basis. back from the front lines, you can see the priest over there, one of the chief medics, they're getting ready for more patients coming in.

we've seen injured soldiers arrive. several men brought in, one of them hit in the neck in a critical condition. this morning, officials telling us he did survive, but priest sergei is here because many do not. we pray for them. worry for each of them, he says. we're defending our country. we can't just sit down and cry. this human cost from the battles is heavy on the russian side too. for now the ukrainians are trying to hold the front lines. they know new weaponry from the u.s. and its nato allies including those advanced tanks could start arriving here in a matter of weeks, michael. >> all right, tom soufi burridge, thank you so much. going to turn now to an explosive first day of testimony in the double murder trial of alex murdaugh. prosecutors show police body cam video from the night the once prominent south carolina attorney's wife and son were shot to death. eva pilgrim is in walterboro, south carolina, with the details for us.

good morning, eva. >> reporter: good morning, michael. this video was the first real look at this very gruesome crime scene. the jury paying close attention to every detail. some of them having a visible reaction to what they saw. this morning, jurors returning to court after seeing police body camera footage of murdaugh the disgraced attorney now accused of their murders. the video shielded from public view but first responders describing the gruesome scene. >> i could see mr. murdaugh down at the end of the driveway. as i approached toward him, i could see the male victim was close to a small shed and the dog kennel on the left. there was a large deal of blood that had pooled around his body. same thing for the female victim on the right. also a large amount of blood around her body. >> reporter: murdaugh emotional in court but the night of the double murders -- >> did you ever see any tears in your interactions with mr. murdaugh? >> he did not appear to be

crying. he was upset but i did not see any visible tears. >> reporter: in that body camera video murdaugh heard immediately giving the officer an explanation for the shootings pointing to a fatal 2019 boat crash. paul murdaugh was facing multiple charges and a lawsuit. >> this is a long story. my son was in a boat wreck. he's been getting threats. most of it's been benign stuff we didn't take serious. you know, he's been getting punched. i know that's what it is. >> reporter: murdaugh then repeatedly asking about his wife and son. >> did you check them? what are they doing? were they hurt? >> reporter: after finding the bodies near the kennels, he tells the officers he went and got his gun from his house. >> based off how nervous he was acting and anxious and upset, i decided it was in everyone's best interest to get that shotgun and secure it in my vehicle so no one else had access to it. >> reporter: at one point you hear murdaugh on the phone.

>> the police are here now. that's my brother. >> reporter: during cross-examination the defense raising the possibility police compromised evidence at the crime scene. >> what did you do other than put yellow tape up to preserve the crime scene? >> that is about the extent of my job is to put up the tape and make sure people that don't need to cross it don't cross it. >> in some jurisdictions they have little baggie things to put over their feet to make sure they don't contaminate the scene. did you have those on? >> no, sir. >> did you go to the house? >> i did not. >> did your department? >> we did not. >> reporter: but officers defending their investigation that night. >> are you aware that any evidence was contaminated in this case? >> i am not. >> did you engage in everything you could to avoid contaminating evidence? >> yes. >> reporter: this jury has a lot more testimony to get to. the potential witness list is 255 names, 9 pages long. >> okay, eva, thanks.

to washington now, where archives asking former presidents to make a search of their files. after classified material was found at the homes of donald trump, joe biden, and mike pence. senior national correspondent terry moran has the story. good morning, terry. >> reporter: good morning, george. with classified tears turning up in all kinds of places they do not belong the national archives took this extraordinary step sending this letter to all the former presidents and vice presidents dating back to ronald reagan and asking them to go through, comb through their papers and files to make sure they don't have classified material or presidential records that belong to the government. that letter which has been obtained by abc news requested that former presidents or their representatives in the case of reagan and george h.w. bush who have died, make sure in those files that materials thought to be personal do not, quote, inadvertently contain classified materials and that letter has a pointed reminder, it says, quote, the responsibility to comply with the presidential records act does not diminish after the end of an administration and as you say,

this letter comes just two days after former vice president mike pence acknowledged that he found classified materials at his home in indiana and, of course, after that fbi raid at former president trump's mar-a-lago home last year, turned up hundreds of documents and after classified materials were found at president biden's home in his garage and at his former office here in d.c. now, abc's reached out to these former presidents and the offices of former president obama and bill clinton. they say that all of the classified material in their possession was properly turned over years ago and the office of former president george w. bush, well, they tell us they are confident that they don't have any classified material either. george. >> terry moran, thanks, michael. we turn now to our super bowl countdown. all eyes are on the young quarterbacks this championship weekend. o is patrick mahomes who is just 27 years old. will reeve is here with more. good morning, will. say when it makes me feel old. three times in a row in the afc championship game, then you won't be fired up for any game. i'm excited to play against a great football team. >> reporter: standing between mahomes and another trip to the big game is another mvp finalist, 26-year-old cincinnati superstar joe burrow whose bengals beat the chiefs in this game last year to advance to the super bowl. >> joe burrow has beaten patrick mahomes three times. and the only other quarterback to ever do that was tom brady. >> we know them. they know us. it's going to be a fun one. >> reporter: in the nfc championship game it's the san francisco 49ers in philly to face the eagles led by their 24-year-old mvp candidate quarterback jalen hurts. >> philly has the home field advantage. that crowd is going to be raucous. >> reporter: san francisco finished their season with their third string quarterback, brock purdy, the very last pick in last year's draft. the player in that slot forever known as mr. irrelevant, but

hive ransomware group who broke into schools and even hospitals. aaron katersky is here with the story. good morning, aaron. >> reporter: good morning to you, michael. those hackers known as hive did sting where it hurts deploying malicious software at hospitals and schools, critical infrastructure, locking up computers and demanding a ransom. well, now the u.s. has hacked back. this morning, the russia-linked hacking group known as hive considered one of the most prolific and dangerous has been shut down. >> simply put, using lawful means, we hacked the hackers. >> reporter: the fbi and international police gained access to hive seizing its servers and the keys to decrypt its software. >> preventing at least $130 million in ransom payments and cutting off the gas that's fueling hive's fire. >> reporter: since hive was detected in 2021, it has targeted thousands of victims taking in more than $100 million in extortion payments. its hackers have been blamed for stealing the data of 270,000 patients at a medical complex in louisiana.

and as covid cases were surging it rendered a hospital in ohio unable to accept new patients. >> the hive has been targeting the health care system, universities and everyday americans for some time now. so they've stolen well over $150 million. it's no joke. rorr:or the lt sii without paying a ransom. but there have been no arrests. >> cybercriminals will up their game. cybercrime is a constantly evolving threat, and i think it sends the right message but i don't think it's the end game. by any stretch. >> reporter: the authorities have long accused russia of harboring ransomware groups like hive so they're not going away, but the fbi is hoping this case convinces companies to come forward if they've been targeted. that way investigators can try to trace the hack, maybe recover some of the money or, guys, make those companies not have to pay to get their stuff back. >> all right, aaron, thank you

alarming rise in children diagnosed with autism. first, the murder charges against the officers accused of killing tyre nichols, and we'll speak with the memphis police chief c.j. davis. first, let's check back with elwyn lopez in memphis. good morning, elwyn. >> reporter: good morning, authorities here in memphis are bracing for what's to come as videos showing what led to tyre nichols' hospitalization and death are set to be released. these are the now officers who have been charged. they are tadarrius bean, demetrius haley, desmond mills jr., justin smith and emmitt martin iii, they're facing felony criminal charges including second-degree murder and aggravated kidnapping and assault. the district attorney here saying that there were two confrontations on january 7th. in the first he says pepper spray was deployed and nichols ran away. the second one, he says, happened during his arrest. that one prosecutors say landed the 29-year-old in the hospital where he died three days later. attorneys for two of the former officers, mills and martin, saying their clients intend to plead not guilty. abc news has reached out to

>> did you give any consideration at all to not releasing the video given the concerns? >> no, not at all. you know, as we continue to talk about transparency and even though this is a very, very difficult video to watch, it was never a thought that we would not release this video. we wanted to make sure that it wasn't released too prematurely because we wanted to ensure that the d.a.'s office, the tbi and also the fbi had an opportunity to cross some of the hurdles that they had to in their investigation. and we're sort of at a point now that the d.a. has made his statements in reference to charges of these officers that this is a safe time for us to release the video. >> you say it's difficult to watch. what was your reaction when you first saw the video? >> in my 36 years, george, i would have to say i don't think i've ever been more horrified

and disgusted, sad, but just, you know, and to some degree confused. >> confused? >> yes. >> why? >> you know, when i say confused, just in the level of aggression and response to what had occurred in this traffic stop and is still very unclear, you know, as to the real reason for the stop in the first place. >> i guess part of your confusion must be rooted in the fact that your department did enact new policies in the wake of george floyd's murder. what went wrong here? >> well, i think that there were several gaps that took place and i'm just going to be honest, any time we have officers that are working in various types of units, our police department along with departments around the country have specialized units.

it's just important to make sure that their supervisors are where they're supposed to be during these types of operations and, you know, individuals that are the right people that are in place that will act appropriately when these types of incidents occur. i believe there was a sense of as happening and it's just very unfortunate that nobody stepped forward to say, enough. >> you think it's possible that the initial stopping of the car was improper? >> as far as i know today, i do believe that the stop itself was very questionable. we have been unable to verify the reckless driving allegation. there have been many searches of

video footage, you know, along the corridors of the streets that this stop supposedly occurred or that the witnessing of reckless driving occurred and we haven't been able to substantiate in any type of video that there was a reckless driving type of action that prompted this stop. >> did any of the police officers involved have prior criminal records? >> no. >> you're certain of that? >> as far as i know, they did not. these officers were hired from -- i guess three to six years is what their tenure was, but i'm not certain that there were any criminal charges on them, but i don't want to say for sure, but as far as i know they didn't. >> how is your department going to rebuild trust with the community in the wake of this? >> this is going to be -- this

>> well, linsey, you mentioned the what, when you talk about the who and the why, this was a study looking at about 4,500 8-year-olds over a 16-year period and found those with the disorder tripled. the theories as to why this happened, a number of things, a greater awareness and understanding of this disorder, obviously we have improved diagnostic methods now. there is a much broader definition of this disorder, so potentially more children would be included and then reporting has increased. all of those actually a good thing because you can't address anything in medicine or public health until you can define it. >> parents will see these headlines and, of course, get a bit alarmed. what warning signs and symptoms should they be on the lookout for? >> i think first and foremost pediatricians are all over this and so parents with concerns should talk to their child's pediatrician. but in terms of some of the signs and symptoms, delayed

together. it's a way of just having fun, discovering new flavors and combinations, starting with this. you know what i'm bubbling right here? >> we're going to -- our viewers, we got the viewers who literally have told us what they want you to chaos cook. >> now i'm seeing. it's super chaos. i thought i was doing my own thing. now, okay. challenge me. >> this is jim. let's see what jim wants. >> give it to me, jim. >> what you got, jim? jim has chicken wings and caramel sauce, and that's what we got bubbling. >> you know what's in it, just sugar, a little water, you don't stir it until it's this beautiful mahogany color. what will we add to this? crispy oven fried chicken wings we did. super easy, toss them in baking soda and do a two-step cooking process, in the oven, no deep fry necessary. now, guess what, another chaos combination, fish sauce in my caramel. just like nona used to do. smell that.

you smell that funky fermented fish sauce. it is ripe in here, some spice in there and a little fresh ginger, fresh red chili, now every chicken wing needs some butter, to help it glisten. a couple pats of butter, we'll mix it together, make it nice and shiny and this caramel sauce i based on a traditional vietnamese recipe. >> it threw me off at first. it's coming, though. >> first you coat it on those beautiful wings, do the whole wing toss in the bowl, make sure every one is coated and serve immediately. who doesn't love sweet barbecue sauce with crispy chicken, honey and fried chicken, all these combinations, totally normal, and now since we chaos cooked, you got this in your repertoire. >> i would never think caramel sauce and chicken wings would go together. okay, thank you to jim for that. we're not done yet. casi is up next. wlet's see what her come bbo ish

get the small ones, this is popcorn shrimp, okay, with mango, okay, so we'll do a dredging station, flour, egg, bread crumbs. not just bread crumb, pulverized butter-salted popcorn. have you watched "the last of us" about the zombies. that's what they kind of look like. it's going right in the fryer and will bubble and get golden brown. what we're left with are beautiful popcorn shrimp with actual popcorn in it and we'll make the mango sauce. you can use store-bought mango puree. we'll add apple cider vinegar, acid, sugar, if you want -- >> how much? >> just a little bit to taste. there you go. wow, see, look at you. no stress. >> no stress. i feel less stressed. >> when you walked on the set
