>> announcer: live from abc news in new york, this is "good morning america". ♪ >> it is. et it plays. >> i love that ♪ >> good saturday morning. we will take in the good. because it is a rough morning for news. we start this hour with the release of that very graphic video showing memphis police officers beating a man who died days later. the video made public overnight, shows tyre nichols being struck repeatedly by officers, kicking, punching and hitting with a baton. >> protests gathering overnight across the country almost immediately after the videos released, including in memphis. people marching in the streets, and blocking interstate traffic. the nichols family pleading for protesters to remain peaceful. >> and president biden speaking with tyre's mother and stepfather hours before the video was released, expressing

his condolences and commending the family for their courage and strength. and as we cover this story, a warning, the video is disturbing. let's go back to stephanie ramos in memphis with the latest. stephanie, good morning, once again. >> reporter: hi there. after the release of the body camera footage people in memphis and other cities across the country chanting no justice, no peace and tyre's name. >> this morning, outrage and protests in the streets of memphis, following the release of disturbing body camera footage, showing the brutal beating of 29-year-old tyre nichols at a traffic stop. the incident happened january 7th around 8:30 in the evening, you can see here police stop nichols while he his car and pull him out. in the video, nichols maintaining his innocence. >> i didn't do anything. >> officers tackling him to the ground. >> get on the ground.

>> i'm on the ground. >> nichols wrestling from their grasp and running away. police catch up with nichols at a second location roughly seven minutes later. nichols heard calling out for his mother, her home about 100 yards from where he was beaten to death. two officers, then seen holding nichols down, as a third kicks him. less than a minute later, another comes in with a baton. [ bleep ]. >> the beating of the unarmed father, lasting nearly three minutes, before the five officers step away. a few minutes later, several more officers arriving on the scene, standing by. none appearing to provide aid to nichols until 20 minutes after the attack. the emts not seen for more than 22 minutes after the end of the beating. three days later, nichols died

at the hospital. the release of the brutal video coming just one day after the five former officers were handed felony charges, including second-degree murder, and aggravated kidnapping and assault. all five now fired, following the incident. and in addition to those five officers, the shelby county sheriff's office says two sheriff's deputies who appeared at the scene after the beating have been relieved of duty, pending the outcome of this administrative investigation. attorneys for two of the former officers, say their intend to plead not guilty. abc news reached out to justin smith and darius bean but have not heard back. an attorney for demetrius haley declined to comment. the former officer mills attorney says his client is devastated by all of this. the memphis police chief bringing into accusa

accusation of reckless driving. >> i believe the stop itself was very questionable and we haven't been able to substantiate any type of video that there was a reckless driving type of action that prompted this stop. >> tyre nichols' family speaking with "gma" this morning. >> how difficult was it to learn that your son was calling out for you? >> it was very difficult, as a mother, you want to always be there, when your children need you, so when i heard that my son was calling my name, and i wasn't there for him, that just hurt my heart. >> really difficult to hear for anyone, especially a mother, and the family of tyre nichols, they are pushing for reform. they want to create a law here in tennessee, in tyre's name, that would require officers to intervene if they see crimes committed by fellow officers, and that is what they are now

pushing for, as they deal with the loss of tyre. guys? >> they also say that they welcome the charges against those five officers, but say that there are others who should also be potentially charged. stephanie ramos there in memphis, thank you. now to second gentleman doug emhoff and day two of his visit to eastern europe, while he will make stops in poland and germany, the visit aimed at bringing awareness about the rise of anti-semitism around the world. and erielle reshef is in krakow poland where she just spoke with the second gentleman about that trip. >> reporter: good morning. the second gentleman walking through oscar shindler's factory, credited with saving more than a thousand jews during the holocaust, marking international holocaust remembrance day. for the first time, second gentleman doug emhoff setting foot on sacred soil marking

international holocaust remembrance day, at the former nazi concentration and extermination camp in poland. the first jewish spouse of a u.s. president or vice president, visibly moved wiping away tears before laying a wreath. >> what is the message you want to send to americans and to the rest of the world. >> we see what happens when anti-semitism and hate led by propaganda and misinformation is unchecked. it leads to death and mass murder and we cannot have it. >> the second gentleman's six day visit to europe, aimed at pushing back against growing anti-semitism at home and abroad, in the u.s. surging to the highest levels on record and spreading hate-filled conspiracy theories, a new survey shows more than 85% of americans believe at least one anti-jewish trope. >> there are no two sides to anti-semitism. there's only one side.

for their viral skits and lip-syncs garnering nearly 16 million followers. ♪ tell me ♪ >> reporter: gonzalez diagnosed a little over a year ago documenting his journey on tiktok. the tiktok personality giving his final update this past november. >> cancer sucks. it sucks the life out of you. makes you feel like you have nothing to live for, but in reality you do, but in reality it sucks. you have to fight. >> reporter: randy's brother and mother speaking exclusively with abc. >> he wants to be remembered by all the influence he had on people for positives. everything was positive. he wanted to know that anybody can make it in this world. >> even though he passed he didn't want people to be sad. all the videos he had and legacy he left behind and all the smiles he gave to everybody. he just wanted everybody to be happy. don't be sad in this moment. >> reporter: gonzalez's passing part of a rise in colon cancer related deaths among young adults.

alongside george lopez on "lopez versus lopez" sharing this photo writing, the love and bond randy had for his son and his family was undeniable. you can see it in every video. he will be missed but never forgotten. ike ejiochi, abc news, los angeles. >> all right, ike ejiochi for us, thank you. eva. now to an inspiring update gma first brought in september 2020, a michigan woman who turned to social media after her glioblastoma battle left her unable to carry a baby, finding a surrogate, and now more than two years later, katie sanchez is mom to a toddler and she is defying the odds of her prognosis thanks to a brain tumor vaccine study. she joins us this morning and have dr. david peereboom to talk about the success of that study and what it could mean for other patients. thank you both so much for being with us. katy, i want to start with you. how are you feeling, and what has this study given you?

>> oh, i feel great, i'm feeling wonderful. navigating the highs and lows of being a new parent. wondering if anyone gets it or there's some sort of manual would be really helpful. but it's an absolute joy and privilege that for a little while i didn't think that i would have. so as far as what it's given me, so much beyond words, my daughter and a future that i was not sure was going to be coming my way, so it's given me years to come with my family and that, i'm so fortunate, so grateful. >> i think so many parents have that same sentiment, katy, i definitely understand that. i feel seen in that comment. dr. peereboom, what is katy's prognosis from here? >> well, katy has done just beautifully, it's always hard to know exactly, you know, the answer to that question, but each year, each month that goes by, katy's prognosis looks better and better and we're

hoping to accomplish this for more and more patients just like katy and, you know, it's always a great encouragement to us as a research team to work with patients like katy and get to know her and to hear her story and it's really what makes us tick and so we are passionate about clinical trials, we think that, you know, all patients should look into clinical trials, because it's the way that the field gets better and that patients are able to gain more options, better quality of life, longer length of life, so we're just really happy with how katy is doing so well and it's a blessing to get to work with her. >> and, katy, you are doing so well but looking ahead, how are you facing the future? >> you know, i tried to take it one day at a time and i think

first, though, i'm supporting girl power, too. yeah, okay, all right, i'm just way over here. that's it. first we want to take a look at the breaking news we're following and the release of that graphic video showing memphis police officers beating tyre nichols who died three days later. he is shown being struck repeatedly by punches, kicks, and a baton. protests gathering nationwide almost immediately after that video was released. the nichols family pleading for protesters to pray and remain peaceful. the five officers involved all fired and now facing felony charges. the fda proposing new guidelines that will ease restrictions on blood donations. under the new rules gay and bisexual men in monogamous relationships would be allowed to donate blood without having to abstain beforehand as regulations now call for. the american medical association and lgbtq rights organizations have long criticized the blood donor restrictions that began during the aids crisis. the city is going through a potato craze.
