the memphis police department says it scorpion unit, whose members were responsible for tyre nichols' death, will be permanently deactivated. it is the latest fallout after the release of several disturbing videos showing the violent beating of the 29-year-old at the hands of memphis police officers. and when -- latest. em: outraged nationwide. the police report saying officers initially pulled nichols over for alleged reckless driving. officers seen tackling home -- tackling him to the ground when nichols breaks free. police catching up with him several minutes later. video shows the taking him down, punching, taking. nichols pummeled for nearly

three minutes. his mom's house just 100 yards away. >> when i heard that my son was calling my name and i was not there for him, it just hurt my heart. >> overnight, largely peaceful protests in several cities, including memphis, where demonstrators blocked traffic on the interstate calling for police reform. police culture that continues to have implicit bias. >> five fired officers, each now facing second-degree murder and other charges. attorneys are two of the former officers saying their clients intend to plead not guilty. abc news reached out to the other three but have not heard back. the attorney for mills junior urging "caution and patience" in judging his actions. two more sheriffs deputies who appear in the video after the beating relieved of duty pending

an internal investigation. >> the video is going to remind a lot of people of rodney king, but as america watched this video, everybody has concluded it is much worse. >> civil rights activist rev. al sharpton is expected to deliver the eulogy at tyree nichols' funeral. the five officers will be arraigned february 17. jr: tyree nichols' mother started a gofundme page for his memorial expenses. the page was created yesterday and has already raised over 900,000 dollars. money will go to the family's cost for mental health services and time off for work. they also plan to use the funds for construction of a memorial skate park. "the chronicle" is reporting the farms in the half moon bay shooting did not have the permits to house workers. the living conditions have been under scrutiny following monday 's mass shooting that left seven

dead and another injured. san mateo county officials have opened an investigation. some have described the living conditions as deplorable, and a county supervisor got a close-up look at them yesterday. the suspected gunman also worked at the farms and made his first court appearance earlier this week. hundreds turned up for a vigil last night at half moon bay. so many have been asking how they can pitch in to support the grieving town of half moon bay and those affected. consider donating to a nonprofit that has been supporting the farmworker community since 2006. it has set up a half moon bay strong fund. you can go to our website, abc7news.com/takeaction for a link. today, members of the asia community gathered in san francisco to remember a tight immigrant -- a thai who was killed two years ago today in a hate crime.

the 84-year-old was walking when he was forcefully pushed to the ground and died. many remember the video. some community members shared their experience with hate crimes and then join in in a special lantern gathering to honor him. his daughter says she wants more unity. >> we would like everyone to stand together. we are here to show love, solidarity, and strength. jr: it's an ongoing effort to prevent hate crimes from happening to vulnerable communities in san francisco. for the past year, the family of alexis gabe has been trying to find their daughter. police say she was killed by her ex-boyfriend who then dismembered her body. the search for her remains continues, but today, almost a year to the day when she was murdered, the family held a memorial in oakley.

abc spoke to the family about what they plan to do next. >> the family of alexis gade now know how her story ends. memories i could have had with you. >> alexis went missing last january 26. on saturday, the family marked the occasion with a memorial in oakley, where she lived. >> will ever change how much love i have for you. >> alexis' mother shared memories of her daughter. the family also thanked -- also took the time to thank the hundreds of volunteers who helped search for alexis. in june, oakley police announced alexis was killed by her ex-boyfriend, marshall jones. the family later learned that jones allegedly cut up her body

and tried to dispose of the remains. >> i pray to strength to bear your absence. >> this may be a memorial for alexis, but the family says their work continues. her father says earlier this week, they were notified that parts of her remains may have been found. >> we're looking for confirmation. enforcement, but the family says they are preparing a lawsuit against his mother for allegedly aiding and abetting. the family says there can never be closure when losing a daughter. >> losing a daughter or it's really hard. we still need justice and we continue to search.

jr: new developments with oakland police chief lamont armstrong being placed on leave. our media partners at "the san francisco standard" report the alameda county attorney's office is now involved and looking at the sergeant in the center of the case that led to armstrong being put on leave. the officer reportedly fired his gun in the police department elevator and tried to cover it up. the chief was put on leave last week for how he handled disciplining the sergeant and has been fighting to get his job back. a man who drove his car off a cliff in san mateo county earlier this month was officially arrested today. the 41 numeral -- the 41-year-old was released from the hospital and taken into custody. officials say he intentionally

the approaching storm, such as it is, on the storm impact scale is warmer. tomorrow, expect scattered showers, light and to fall. rain pulled totals just under .1 inch in most areas and snow level will be down to about 2500 3000 feet as the cold air comes in behind that cold front. starting at midnight, clouds will increase overnight. 7:00 tomorrow morning, we will see some spotty showers, mainly in the south day, and later in the day, the system becomes more active, producing more widespread showers, but mainly in the higher elevations, we might see some snow as the cool air comes in behind the front that's bringing the light rainfall. by 6:00 tomorrow evening or perhaps a little later, we will see storm winding down and pushing out with cold air coming in behind it. rainfall estimates once again, under .1 inch in most locations. in fact, only .02 of an inch in most locations. los tonight mainly in the mid

jr: welcome back. buffalo bills player damar hamlin penned a sweet message to fans in his first public comments since collapsing on the field on cincinnati. he sent a huge thank you to people for their unwavering support. the bills safety went into cardiac arrest after tackling the bengals wide receiver during the game back on january 2. hamlin collapsed shortly after that and had to be resuscitated on the field in cincinnati. the football star says now was the right time to speak since the bills' season ended and he has had time to recover. he thanked his coaches, teammates, medical staff at both hospitals where he split his recovery. he continued to share his appreciation. >> it has been a lot to process, but i cannot tell you how appreciative i am of all the love and support in everything that's just been coming in my way. jr: way to go.

hamlin's charity, chasing millions, received over $9 million in donations over the past weeks. steph and aisha curry are expressing their opposition to the addition of multifamily housing near their atherton home. according to the mercury news, they have privacy and safety concerns. they sent an email to mayor bill witmer of atherton expressing their concerns. the housing plan would need a state mandate to add more affordable housing to the city. a public hearing on a resolution to adopt the plan is the other four people who were shot or standing outside.

kind of foresaw this was going to happen. he told us this week he told purdy and the team that when it comes to january, we could be playing the eagles on the road in the nfc championship game, and that's exactly what happened. purdy went out that week against the seahawks, played very well despite an injury, led them to a win, so at least he has some experience to draw from. chris: what are you going to be looking for? >> for me, the two egos have been very good in the run game. 49ers have been good at stopping the run. eagles do a lot of things with rpo's. those safeties are key because if they react too quickly, the eagles will throw the ball over your head for big plays. jalen hurts, one of the top three quarterbacks in the league when it comes to accuracy and completions, so those safeties have to be on their and cues. >> on the road, you don't want to be chasing points. how can the niners avoid one of those eagle blitzes?
