reacting to the video of the brutal beating and death of tyre nichols at the hands of memphis police. more protests are planned today. yesterday's protests remained peaceful. you can see them in new york, atlanta, memphis, and boston. tara campbell spoke to the organizers of an event today in san francisco. tara: across the nation, marking in the wake of memphis body camera footage showing the arrest of tyre nichols. they will take to the streets of oakland sunday. >> looking at some of the older days are test, we are -- protests, we are expecting several thousand. tara: he is the -- she's the director of the anti-terror police project and she says people are fed up. >> black people are terrified and white people who are allies are like, this is too much and

it's got to stop. >> tomorrow afternoon at the baptist church at 3:00 sharp, there will be a gathering of persons from all walks of life and that we might express our peaceful protest. tara: reverend amos brown is the leader of the naacp san francisco and says they will be praying for nichols' family and calling for change. >> the issue is not about black officers. it is about a culture in the police departments. tara: cap brooks has been working for change for long times. i asked what keeps her hopeful. how do you keep going? >> i can't call it hope because i actually don't know that i believe that things in this country will change for black people. tara: she may not call it hope -- >> i'm sorry. tara: but she's not calling it quits. >> to be honest, i'm so tired of

marching. but i have to keep going. what drives me is a deep love for my people. tara: tara campbell, abc news. liz: there were also be a cam but mark -- candlelight vigil tomorrow at ask: 30 at night. nichols was from sacramento but moved to memphis a couple years ago. the family says the vigil is a time for healing, love, and closure. tyre nichols' mother started a gofundme page for his memorial expenses. it has already raised over $900,000. money will go to their cost for mental health services and time off of work. they plan to use the money for instruction of a state park in honor of tyre. in half moon bay, the chronicles are reporting the permits did not have -- they did not have the permits to house workers.

parents' house in palo alto while on a $250 million bond. a small protest took place this weekend over the planned renovation of the historic castro theater. abc7news was there yesterday a group called save the seats rallied against the proposal. the plan calls for ripping out seating so that a motorized dance floor can be installed. the manager says this is the only way to keep it open. others say it has special meaning to the castro. >> this historic movie theater it is important to gay people around the world and we want to support everyone who wants to show movies here.

year of the rabbit. this happened at the downtown event center. families were treated to a performance. food trucks, vendors, and kids activities were available. in the north bay, marin county is opening a shelter for people experiencing homelessness in response to a freeze warning today, in collaboration with marin hhs and episcopal community services. the shelter wellness campus at 3240 kerner boulevard in san rafael. you are tracking the frost and freeze warning and spotty showers. lisa: we've seen a few down by monterey. most of the activity will be south of us in terms of rain, but everyone will experience the cold and breezy from san francisco to the east bay. north bay will be the windiest with a wind advisory at 1:00.

there's live doppler 7 with all the cold air, three to six inches of snow in the sierra nevada, but the upper level low will sink to the south with most of the activity south of the golden gate. it is 45 in danville, 47 in dublin. mount diablo at 37 wind. 39 in the know -- novato. 12 degrees milder in so you are probably feeling the difference. as we get through the next 24 to 48 hours, we go in the other direction where we could the records early tomorrow into monday and tuesday. there's a look at wind gusts of 38 miles an hour in oakland. very breezy and it will just get windier. numbers will drop throughout the day as the cold air moves in.

thanks for joining us here. we are tracking the weather here in san francisco and in philadelphia. lisa: we have a level 1 system on the way, live doppler 7 tracking rain in the south bay, closer towards monterey and salinas. you can see the green and the live radar sweep. closer from pescadero to santa cruz in the past couple of hours, we've had spotty showers. this is a weak system and most of the activity will be close to the golden gate, a trace amount to .1. snow levels bottoming out you 2500 feet. 28 to 38 mile per hour surface wind gusts and it is freezing in santa rosa. throughout the next several hours, look at the spotty showers, perhaps a few light rain showers into the east bay,

along the coast, down the peninsula and into the south bay. by 2:00, numbers have dropped into the upper 40's. reaching our highest readings the first half of the day. the second half, cold and windy with low snow levels. liz: the police chief of the men to -- memphis police department has dismantled the crime task force involved in the beating of tyre nichols. there have been calls for police to shut down that unit for weeks. justin finch reports from memphis with the latest. justin: overnight, police department taking new actions after the release of video showing the brutal beating of 29-year-old tyre nichols after a traffic stop. police chief davis permanently dismantling the scorpion unit, the specialized team on which the five former officers facing second-degree murder and other charges in connection to his death served. the chief saying it came after

listening to the nichols' family the community and other involved , officers. ahead of the decision davis explained -- >> the scorpion unit was put together to add extra visibility in the community, and also develop relationships with community members. justin: lawyers for the family calling for the creation of tyre's law, that requires officers to intervene if they witness crimes being committed by a fellow officer. >> get on the ground. police. >> i'm on the ground. justin: in the initial police statement officers said they pulled him over for alleged reckless driving. the officers seen here pulling open his car door before tackling him to the ground. nichols wrestles free and runs towards his mother's house. police catching up with him about seven minutes later. the video showing officers holding him down, punching, kicking, striking him with ahiss away. >> when i heard that my son was

calling my name and i wasn't there for him, it hurt my heart. justin: across the nation more , protests calling for systemic police reform. >> what's his name? >> tyre nichols! justin: attorneys for desmond mills junior and emmett martin saying that their clients intend to plead not guilty to all the charges. abc news reached out to justin smith and demetrius haley but have not heard back. those five former officers now facing murder charges will be arraigned next month. the memphis mayor saying the city is starting an outside independent review of the police department training policies and specialized unit operations. justin finch, abc news, memphis. liz: coming up this week martha raddatz sits down with ben crump to discuss the reaction and police accountability. you can watch the full interview on this week with george stephanopoulos right here on abc 7.

in los angeles authorities say , three people are dead and four others are wounded after a shooting yesterday morning in an upscale neighborhood. lapd says it happened in front of the beverly crest home they believe has been used as a short-term rental. investigators did not confirm whether a party was happening there the time. the victims were found dead inside of a vehicle. the other four people who were shot were standing outside. police say they have no other information on any suspects. a group of youth activists held a rally yesterday outside city hall in response to the recent mass shootings. march 4 our lives, made up primarily of students, was behind the event. it followed the deadly shooting in florida. the group came together after the shooting in parkland, florida in 2018. the seek to prevent gun violence by changing laws. >> ideally federal legislation to ban assault rifles and military weapons. those weapons were developed for war. liz: the event was originally

planned in response to the monterey park shooting that left 11 people dead. there have since been at least three more mass shootings in california. steph and aisha curry expressing their opposition to the addition of multifamily housing near their atherton home. according to the mercury news, they have privacy and safety concerns. they sent an emailed to the mayor of atherton expressing their concerns. the 2031 housing plan would meet a state mandate to add more affordable housing in the city. a public hearing on the resolution to adopt the plan is scheduled for tuesday, january 31. buffalo bills player damar hamlin penned a sweet message to his fans in his first public comment since collapsing on the field in cincinnati. he sent a huge thank you to people for their unwavering support. the bills' safety went into cardiac arrest after a tackle during the game on january 2. hamlin collapsed and had to be resuscitated on the field in

spotty showers along the south bay. clouds increasing for the rest of us with light showers. a week level 1 system on the way and freezing cold mornings along with chilly days for the next several days. when san francisco gets below 40, you know it is cold. we have reached our high temperatures for the next couple of hours and by 10:00, you will notice the cold air moving in through the north bay and lake county into the upper elevations. the midday hour, we have showers from the peninsula, maybe a spotty showers in the north or east bay but the emphasis is the south bay. if you see some rain, it could come down pretty hard because this is a cold system and with it we get that unstable air. anywhere from no rain at all to about .1 inch.

spencer: keeping track of see stars -- sea stars here on the coastline has been an urgent mission for rebecca johnson. she and her team of volunteers watch as several species including the giant sunflower star were decimated by a wasting disease possibly triggered by a marine heatwave roughly a decade ago unleashing a chain effect on , the ecosystem. >> the loss of this starfish allowed for the purple sea urchin population to explode and with that exploding population of these sea urchins came a decline in kelp. spencer: s of hungry purple urchins has developed a long-term threat to the kelp forest that provided a critical habitat for marine life . they've been particularly destructive to the bull kelp prevalent on the coast. >> kelp forests are amazing. the nurseries and habitats are for tons of different species. fish and many different invertebrates. spencer: while many species have

recovered along the coast, dr. johnson says the sunflower star is still largely missing and with the pressures from climate change there is ongoing concern over what the future might hold. >> two of them are right next to each other here, big guy and little guy hanging out. spencer: enter the senior biologist with the captive breeding program. she's watching over the tiny specks that will grow. she says the secrets they are unlocking could one day help others species like the sunflower stars. >> just learning more about the background, what their lifecycle is like, what their nutritional needs are. that's a great gateway to do some sort of release program. spencer: she says plans to release the species would likely be far off in the future but that there is increasing interest worldwide in learning about the biodiversity of star

hoping to learn more about wildlife in the area and they got quite the surprise. normally a bear might keep its distance but this one seems to enjoy the spotlight. striking a pose, very madonna. one couple in nevada had to crack open a shower wall to get to a trapped cat. you can see it in this video, the couple smashing a whole into the shower wall that the contractor had just fixed a few hours earlier after realizing the cat got walled in by the accident. they looked all over for winston and eventually heard faint meows from the bathroom. when they got to him they had to lure him out with some cheese. lisa: that is too bad. good for him, back to safety. spotty showers with our weak level 1 system along the south bay and peninsula. cold temperatures and breezy
