air on the way with a little bit of rain. we have seen rain from san jose to half moon bay. as we look at live doppler 7 down to the santa cruz mountains, we had about 81 hundredths -- eight one hundredths. it has certainly been an interesting morning with really cool dynamic cloud developments and breezy wind. level 1 system today, scattered showers. some of you not seeing anything at all. as we get to the exploratorium camera, there is blue skies. you're 50 and half moon bay, that is a pretty shot of san francisco. highs are cold, only in the 30's in santa rosa. 20 miles an hour for wind up the coast, upper elevations we get into a wind advisory. as we look at the winds, it is gusty. san jose, already some accumulated precipitation. how much rain and wind and how chilly it will be today.

liz: there will be a call to action across the bay area today. it comes in reaction to the brutal beating and death of tyre nichols at the hands of memphis farn eerinewith more pla atlaa, mphraamelto organizers of events planned today in san francisco and oakland. tara: across the nation, marking in the wake of memphis body camera footage showing the january 7 arrest of tyre nichols. sunday, they will take to the streets of oakland. >> looking at the olden day protests, we are expecting several thousand folks. tara: she's the director of the anti-terror police project and she says people are fed up. >> black people are tired. i think white folks and allies

are like, this is too much and it's got to stop. >> tomorrow afternoon at the baptist church at 3:00 sharp, there will be a gathering of persons from all walks of life and that we might express our peaceful protest. tara: reverend amos brown is the leader of the naacp san francisco and says they will be praying for nichols' family and calling for change. >> the issue is not about black officers. the issue is about a culture in the police departments of this nation. tara: she has been working for change for long times. i asked what keeps her hopeful. how do you keep going? >> i can't call it hope because i actually don't know that i believe that things in this country are ever going to change for black people. tara: she may not call it hope -- >> i'm sorry. tara: but she's not calling it

>>, either. -- calling it quits, either. >> to be honest, i'm so tired of marching. but i have to keep going. what drives me is a deep love for my people. tara: tara campbell, abc news. liz: there will be a candlelight vigil tomorrow for tyre at regency skate park at 7:00 p.m.. nichols was from sacramento but moved to memphis a couple years ago. the family says the vigil is a time for healing, love, and closure. gofundme page started by his mother has already raised nearly $1 million. the page was created friday to assist the family with memorial expenses. some of the money will go to the cost for mental health services and time off of work, and the construction of a memorial skate park for tyre. now for the latest on the mass shooting and half moon bay. the chronicle is reporting the forms involved in the shooting did not have permits to house

workers. the living conditions have been under scrutiny following the mass shooting that left seven people dead and another injured. san mateo county officials opened an investigation. some have described the living conditions as deplorable, and a county supervisor got a close look. the suspected gunman worked at the farms and made his first court appearance last week. so many people have been asking how they can pitch in to help the grieving town of half moon bay and those affected. considered turn it into a nonprofit that has been suppting the farmworker community since 2006. they set up a half moon bay strong fund. you can visit our website for a link or visit their website. oakland police chief leronne armstrong being placed on leave. our media partners report the alameda county district attorneys office.

their office is looking at the sergeant at the center of the case that led to armstrong being put on leave. the officer fired his gun in an elevator and tried to cover it up. the chief was put on leave last week for how he disciplined the sergeant and is fighting to get his job back. today, the nfc championship game. the 49ers are one win away from this trip to the super bowl. san francisco's most iconic buildings were lit up in support of the 49ers. gold last night, you can see the tower also sporting 49ers colors. it has been cycling through them, red and gold. 40 faithful are getting pumped up with less than three hours before the big game in philadelphia versus the eagles. there was a rally held saturday for niners fans. cornell barnard was at sfo for

end could be in court tomorrow. it has been one year since the disappearance of 24-year-old alexis gabe. for months, her family had been trying to find their daughter who police say was killed by her ex-boyfriend and dismembered her body. on saturday, marking nearly one year to the date since she was murdered, her family honored her. reporter: the family of alexis gabe now know how her story ends. >> it doesn't just feel like i lost a piece of myself. it is more like i lost memories i could have had. reporter: alexis went missing last january 26. on saturday come almost a year to the date, the family marked the occasion with a memorial in oakley, where they live. >> i want to say to you right now that nothing, not death or passing of time, will ever change how much love i have for you. reporter: alexis' mother shared

memories of her daughter and took time to think hundreds of volunteers who help search for her. >> this community has searched, prayed, grieved, and i can't thank you enough. reporter: in jim, -- june, oakley police announced alexis was killed by her ex boyfriend marshall jones. he allegedly cut up her body and tried to dispose of the remains. >> i prayed to god to give me strength reporter:. this may be a memorial, but her family says the work continues. ♪ reporter: her father says earlier this week, they were notified that parts of her remains may have been found. >> we are waiting for confirmation. we are hoping it is her. reporter: jones was killed by law enforcement while they attempted to serve him with a arrest warrant, but the gabe family says they are preparing a

lawsuit against his mother for aiding and abetting >> i will keep your name on everyone's minds and make sure you are not forgotten. reporter: the family says there can never be closer when losing a daughter. >> losing a daughter is really hard. there's no closure and we still need justice and we will continue the search. reporter: in oakley, abc 7 news. liz: now to the latest in the ftx bankruptcy scandal. federal prosecutors say the descriptive -- disgraced crypto executive sam bankman-fried has tried to contact witnesses in his criminal cases. in a letter to the judge, prosecutors asked to change the conditions of his release to order him to not contact or communicate with current or former ftx or alameda employees. they ask for him to not use any encrypted messaging apps. prosecutors say they are concerned of an effort to influence potential testimony.

he is currently living at his parents house in palo alto while out on a 250 million dollar bond. he has put not guilty. a small protest took place this weekend over the planned renovation of san francisco's historic castro feeder -- theater. a group called save the seats rallied against the new proposal outside the theater. the plan calls for ripping out seating so that a motorized dance floor can be installed for events like concerts. last year, the plan received considerable backlash. they say this is the only way to keep it open. those against the plan says the theater has special meaning to the castro. >> this historical movie is important to gay people around the world and we want to support everyone who wants to show movies here. save the seats. save the castro. liz: there is a hearing planned for next week about the plans to renovate the theater.

members of the asian community gathered in san francisco yesterday to remember a thai immigrant killed roughly two years ago in a hate crime. the he was forcefully pushed to the ground and died. many remember the video went viral at the time. some community members share their experience with hate crimes at this vigil, then joined in a special lantern gathering to honor him. his daughter says he wants -- she wants more unity. >> we would like everyone to stand together. we are here to stand in solidarity and strength. liz: this is part of an ongoing effort for san francisco to prevent hate crimes from happening to vulnerable communities. the city of fremont hosted the inaugural lunar new year event celebrating the year of the rabbit. ♪ liz: this happened at the

downtown event center. families were treated to a performance by young, local martial artists. food trucks, vendors, and kids activities were available. in the north bay, marin county is opening a shelter for people experiencing homelessness in response to a freeze warning today, in collaboration with marin health and human services and episcopal community services. the shelter will open at 5:00 p.m. at the marin health and wellness campus at 3240 kerner boulevard in san rafael. lisa, let us get a check of the weather. you are tracking the frost and freeze warning later today, and potentially spotty showers. lisa: we picked up around four one hundredths. mission peak over in the east bay about four one hundredths. stte of the activity along the coast and south bay, and along

the bayshore. a few more showers, the level 1 system will increase in intensity and bring maybe a tent around ben lomond today. the temperature on top of mount diablo is 28 degrees right now, that is 3800 feet. as a result, the cold air, you can see the snow in mount hamilton. we are looking at more cold air coming into play for the later afternoon and overnight hours. pescadero down through scotts valley looking at the rain showers and in the sierra nevada, 23 degrees. snow flurries, maybe three to six inches at the resorts. right after 7:00, looking snow accumulating and keeping slippery conditions and winds at least 40 miles an hour. ridgetop winds over 70 miles an hour. this is an indication of how cold the air is, you can see the spackling of the clouds offshore. as we look out, it looks nice

with the visibility here from the golden gate bridge. you can see the cloud cover of the north bay, not picking up much. 48 in san francisco, 49 in oakland. 50 in half moon bay due to the wind allowing for mixing and keeping temperatures slightly milder. you know what is to come. it is going to be a cold afternoon, 35 in santa rosa. the numbers have not budged. warmer this morning. last time we will say that for the next several days as the cold air mass stays in place for 24 to 48 hours. wind gusts 29 miles an hour in half moon bay, there is the upper elevations. 30 to 40 miles an hour. the cold front moves through and we are left with breezy northeasterly winds in the north bay for the wind advisory throughout the afternoon. sonoma, napa and marin. east bay hills, you can see the clouds and wind. chilly and breezy with spotty showers, looking at the freezing cold overnight tonight with frost along the bayshore.

liz: kickoff are the nfc championship game is around the corner. fans geared up by meeting the former running back, ricky waters. he scored three touchdowns in super bowl 29. waters signed autographs into pictures with fans at dick's sporting goods in daly city. fans are confident the 49ers will advance to the super bowl and win the first trophy since 1995. >> we are going to win the super

bowl, we are taking it all. right? >> yeah. liz: if the 49ers beat the eagles dick's sporting goods plans to have extended hours after the games for fans to get the latest gear. small businesses, especially restaurants in san francisco, could see increases in their delivery fees from sites like doordash and grubhub. since the pandemic started, delivery fees have been capped at 15% but the cap will expire at the end of the month. abc 7 news reporter leanne melendez tells us what this means for your next order. reporter: the hawaiian barbecue in the financial district benefited greatly from a 15% delivery fee cap during the pandemic. >> definitely helpful, yes. reporter: the city wanted to make the cap permanent. but when two of the delivery apps suited, san francisco reached a compromise. the compromise means it is up to small business owners to decide if they want to make changes to their contract. it tells them as a small

business owner, i want to keep that 15% fee option. if i don't, the fee could go up as high as 30%. so, what does a small business owner lose by staying at the 15% level? they say a lot. marketing, advertising, consulting -- basically you lose visibility. >> with 15% you only get minimum and you won't be in the part of the program where they have the corporates. corporates are important. lyanne: the office of small business is alerting owners that to make changes, they must go directly to the delivery service app. >> go into the settings and look at the plans. they should be able to see a comparison if they were to stay with the basic plan. it would be the features of that play on, as well as if they were to switch to another tear -- tier? lyanne: they have also reached out to members.

reached us yet, temperatures will drop throughout the afternoon. live doppler 7 with the level 1 system showing the showers mixed in with snow on top of mount hamilton, also around the santa cruz mountains. we have had rain for mission peak to the east bay and in the south bay. you can see 1st avenue, some spotty showers. further south around boulder creek, it has been wet. level 1 system with spotty showers, some of your not seeing anything at all. up to a 10th of an inch in the santa cruz mountains, there is a look at the skies -- the clouds parting in san jose. had a rainy start, 48 in the city, 50 half moon bay. the camera is shaking, mid-30's and the north bay and mid 30's in the east bay. 30 miles an hour wind wind advisory in the north bay, frost advisory for san francisco, a freeze warning tonight. that is because of a cold system headed our way.

we will talk about the week ahead, coming up. liz: the police of the memphis police department has dismantled the crime task force involved in the beating of sacramento native tyre nichols. there have been calls for police to shut down that unit for weeks. justin finch reports from memphis with the latest. justin: overnight, the memphis police department taking new actions after the release of video showing the brutal beating of 29-year-old tyre nichols after a traffic stop. police chief davis permanently disbanding the scorpion unit, the specialized team on which the five former officers facing second-degree murder and other charges in connection to his death served. the chief saying it came after listening to the nichols' family , the community and uninvolved officers. ahead of the decision davis explained -- >> the scorpion unit was put together to add extra visibility in the community, and also develop relationships with community members.

justin: lawyers for the family calling for the creation of tyre's law to require officers to intervene if they witness crimes being committed by a fellow officer. >> get on the ground. police. >> i'm on the ground. justin: in the initial police statement officers said they pulled him over for alleged reckless driving. officers seen here pulling open his car door before tackling him to the ground. nichols wrestles free and runs towards his mother's house. police catching up with him about seven minutes later. the video showing officers holding him down, punching, kicking, and striking him with a baton. his mother's house was 100 yards away. >> when i heard that my son was calling my name and i wasn't there for him, it hurt my heart. justin: across the nation, more protests calling for systemic police reform. >> what's his name? >> tyre nichols! justin: attorneys for desmond mills junior and emmett martin saying that their clients intend

to plead not guilty to all the charges. abc news reached out to justin smith and demetrius haley but have not heard back. those five fired officers now facing murder charges are due for arraignment next week. the memphis mayor saying the city will conduct an independent come outside review of the police department training policies and specialized unit operations. justin finch, abc news, memphis. liz: we are hearing more from the nichols family attorney, ben crump, about other incidences with these officers that may have contributed to this decision. this is what he said on this week. >> the young man said he was assaulted for five days before he was killed, simply going to get pizza. they said they attacked pulled him out of the car, yell profanity at him and put a gun to his head. liz: he said the man tried to

report the account or twice to the memphis police department, but his calls were not returned. the unit was operating as three teams of 30 officers that claimed to target violent offenders and areas hit by high crime. scorpion has been inactive since nichols' arrest nearly three weeks ago. in los angeles, three people are dead and four others are wounded after a shooting yesterday morning in an upscale neighborhood. lapd says it happened in front of the beverly crest home they believe has been used as a short-term rental. investigators did not confirm whether a party was happening there the time. the victims were found dead inside of a vehicle. the other four people who were shot were standing outside. police say they have no other information on any suspects. a group of youth activists held a rally yesterday outside city hall in response to the recent mass shootings. march 4 our lives, made up primarily of students, was behind the event. it formed following the deadly school shooting in parkland, florida in 2018.

it seeks to prevent gun violence by changing laws. >>military grade weapons. we -- those weapons were developed for war. liz: the event was originally planned in response to the monterey park shooting that left 11 people dead. there have since been at least three more mass shootings in california. new this morning from the north bay, a house fire turned deadly for two people. first arriving firefighters successfully rescued one woman and three dogs, but two other adult victims were discovered and cpr unfortunately was unsuccessful. the fire broke out in with the sonoma county fire chief is calling a makeshift bedroom off the side of highway 116 around 5:00 this morning. it has closed the highway temporarily. no word on the cause at this time. steph and aisha curry expressing their opposition to the addition of multifamily housing near their atherton home.

according to the mercury news, they have privacy and safety concerns. they sent an email to the mayor of atherton expressing their concerns. the 2023 to 2031 housing plan would meet a state mandate to add more affordable housing in the city. a public hearing on the resolution to adopt the plan is scheduled for tuesday, january 31. buffalo bills player damar hamlin penned a sweet message to his fans in his first public comment since collapsing on the field in cincinnati. he sent a huge thank you to people for their unwavering support. the bills' safety went into cardiac arrest after tackling a bengals wide receiver during the game on january 2. hamlin collapsed and had to be resuscitated on the field in cincinnati. the football star says now was the right time to speak since the bills season had ended and he is recovering. he think his coaches, teammates and medical staff at both hospitals where he split his recovery.

liz: welcome back, here is a live look from her abc 7 roof camera. it is windy this morning and pretty cold, especially later today, so bundle up. but is talk sports. today's nfc championship game is the biggest game of the season for the 49ers, so far. can the red and gold take down the eagles and punch their ticket to the super bowl? abc 7 sports director larry beil has a preview of the matchup in this morning's sports. larry: good morning, everybody. for the third time in four seasons the 49ers are playing in the nfc championship game. the faithful have traveled across the country and are making the city of brotherly love to the extent that, oh my, they dressed the famous rocky statue in red and gold. for more, chris alvarez in philadelphia. chris: the 49ers had super bowl expectations before the season began, but no one could have guessed brock purdy would be leading them as quarterback at this point in the season. he looks to become the first

quarterback ever to lead his team to the super bowl. >> i feel like it is the moments between practice and going to bed you think about man, what an opportunity we have. you can say it's just another game but there's a lot on the line. all of our goals and dreams and everything are in front of us. >> who can do right longer, who can push through for the end goal? do you want it that bad? are you starving for it? >> when you have the pinnacle of the game, the super bowl, dangling in front of your face, starvation has a lot to do with that. we are all starving to win. >> the playoffs are different, there is more intensity. everyone is fighting a little harder, fighting a little more. if you can go out and enjoy yourself and have fun, it makes it easier. chris: after the loss in miami, kittle said he would be back. now, they are one win away from

victorious, 57-56. that's a wrap on morning sports. enjoy the game, go niners. i am larry beil. liz: we are just two hours away now, everyone is getting anxious. the grocery stores packed last night. lisa: it is going to be a fun day today, we are looking at a nice view from the inside. it looks wintry and cold out there. we have live doppler 7 and the precipitation mode, we are picking up rain and snow on top of mount diablo, the santa cruz mountains. we picked up about 41 hundredths -- four one hundredths.

through boulder creek, santa cruz, scotts valley. 23 degrees in truckee, we are looking at the winter weather advisory through 7:00 tonight. six inches at southlake, not a whole lot. this indicates the cold air that will continue to filter into the bay area today. a pretty view from oakland at the airport, it is 49 degrees. also 49 in san jose, you had early morning rain showers. half moon bay with the wind, it is up to 50 degrees. here in santa cruz, not going to budge too much. temperatures in the low 50's with the rain on the way through the afternoon. santa rosa low to mid 40's, we will stay chilly and breezy. were 24 hours ago, that is about to change as temperatures get stuck in the 40's to low 50's. gusty wind along the coast right now, they were stronger earlier. they will continue to ramp up behind the front, upper elevation winds anywhere from 25 to 30 miles an hour. this area right here is where we have a wind advisory from 1:00 this afternoon through the late

afternoon for marin, sonoma and napa with wind over 40 miles an hour that could gust over 60. a look at the cove, temperatures in the 20's in nevada, maybe mid-20's today with the snow coming down. chilly and breezy locally with spotty showers, freezing cold overnight. the frost advisory for san francisco ended peninsula, coastal areas and a freeze warning for interior valleys with more cold mornings and chilly days to follow. here is a look at the low pressure spinning and dropping to the south of us throughout the day today. showers, a chance of them right on through the afternoon from the city to the east bay. southbay did north bay not likely -- southbay to north bay not likely, but if you see a shower overhead, it will be very light. a couple hundredths to maybe a 10th, it depends where we see the activity as the low six to the south. winds 20 to 30 miles an hour, they continue throughout the day. here comes the cold air.

once the winds dial back, that is the coldest we will see. probably tuesday morning. there is a look at the highs, making into the 50's. tonight, below freezing or at freezing for just about everyone. could see a couple of records. the level 1 system with breezy wind, spotty showers, frost tonight and a hard freeze in some areas. by tuesday morning, we could see that once again. midweek is slightly warmer. by friday, still looking at rain that could last into saturday. liz: the spring weather cannot last forever. the bay area coastline has been under pressure from an environmental event that has shaken up populations of predators and prey that once kept the system in balance. researchers at california academy of sciences are hoping skills they are developing now might someday offer help. here's spencer christian. >> i love that patterning. >> isn't it beautiful? spencer: keeping track of see

stars -- sea stars here on the coastline has been an urgent mission for rebecca johnson. she and her team of volunteers watch as several species including the giant sunflower star were decimated by a wasting disease, possibly triggered by a marine heatwave roughly a decade ago, unleashing a chain effect on the ecosystem. >> the loss of this starfish allowed for one of its prey items, the purple sea urchin am of the population to explode. with that exploding population of these sea urchins came a decline in kelp. spencer: she says the explosion of hungry purple urchins has developed a long-term threat to the kelp forest that provided a major bennett from sequestering carbon to providing a critical habitat for marine life. they've been particularly destructive to the bull kelp prevalent on the coast. >> kelp forests are amazing. they are nurseries and habitats for tons of different species.

fish, many different invertebrates. spencer: while many species have recovered along the coast, dr. johnson says the sunflower star is still largely missing and with the pressures from climate change, there is ongoing concern over what the future might hold. >> we have got two of them right next to each other over here. big guy and little guy hanging out. spencer: enter the senior biologist with the captive breeding program. like in expecting parent, she is currently watching over the tiny specs that will grow into adult bats stores. while they are not in danger -- bat stars. while they are not in danger, the secrets they are unlocking could one day help other species like the sunflower stars. >> just learning more about the background, what their lifecycle is like, what their nutritional needs are. that's a great gateway to do some sort of release program. spencer: she says plans to release the species would likely be far off in the future but there is increasing interest worldwide in learning

about the biodiversity of star populations. these genetic traits that might allow a species to survive pressures like warming ocean waters and marine diseases. >> this was our catalyst to make sure that we could do it in-house and use it as a jumping off point to hopefully work with other sea star species. spencer: academy researchers are doing similar work with coral, which is also facing pressure from fluctuation in the marine environment and they are hoping the work will help scientists better manage the fragile ecosystems and the predators like sea stars that help to keep in balance. spencer christian, abc 7 news. liz: next, a cat trapped in a bathroom wall.

liz: there is a very camera savvy bear in boulder, colorado. not only has the curious critter been drawn to a wildlife camera,

it also managed to strike a pose. there are numerous selfies. you have to look at this. city officials set up the camera last year, hoping to learn more about wildlife in the area, and they got quite the surprise. normally a bear might keep its distance but this one seems to truly enjoy the spotlight. it is like vogue strike a pose, very cute. one couple in nevada had to crack open a shower wall to get to a trapped cat. you can see in this video, the couple smashing a hole into the shower wall that the contractor had just fixed a few hours earlier after realizing the cat got walled in by the accident. they looked all over for winston the cat and eventually heard faint meows in the bathroom. when they got to him they had to lure him out with some cheese. thankfully he was not freaked out, it seems like he you liked the hiding spot. look at winston. lisa:. cute. we have a few light rain
