but we got out of town before the crisco-soaked poles. they said that people might be climbing them. they didn't as far as we saw. but we're also following that important news ahead as millions of americans are under alerts for dangerously cold windchills as low as 55 degrees below zero in some parts and ginger will have much more on that coming up. we begin with the fallout from the release of that body cam video showing the brutal and fatal police beating of tyre nichols. peaceful protests all over the country this weekend expressing their outrage at what nichols endured at the hands of police. stephanie ramos is in memphis with the latest. good morning, stephanie. >> reporter: good morning, george. it's been an emotional few days here in memphis. this city and other parts of the country completely consumed and hurt by what happened to tyre nichols, a young man trying to get home, calling out for his mother in hopes she could hear him as police beat him. we do want to warn you. this video that you are about to see is disturbing and really difficult to watch. this morning, growing fallout following the release of the

disturbing video showing the traffic stop that turned deadly. a group of now former memphis police officers seen beating and kicking 29-year-old tyre nichols. the five fired officers, all charged with second-degree murder, had been members of a specialized crime unit called the s.c.o.r.p.i.o.n. unit, formed in november of 2021 to patrol high-crime hot spots. s.c.o.r.p.i.o.n. now permanently disbanded. >> this s.c.o.r.p.i.o.n. unit was designed to saturate under the guise of crime-fighting, and what it wound up doing instead was creating a continual pattern and practice of bad behavior. >> reporter: widespread outrage over nichols' death has been growing since friday when the city of memphis released brutal police body camera footage and utility pole camera footage of the january 7th incident. body camera footage shows police stopping nichols in his car and pulling him out. nichols, pleading his innocence. >> get out the [muted] car. >> i didn't do anything. >> reporter: officers tackling

him to the ground. >> get on the ground! >> i'm going to tase y'all. >> reporter: nichols wrestling from their grasp and running away. police catching up with nichols at a second location roughly seven minutes later. nichols heard calling out for his mother. >> mom! >> reporter: her home about 100 yards from where he was beaten. two officers then seen holding nichols down as a third kicks him. less than a minute later, another comes in with a baton. >> i'm going to baton the [ muted ]. >> reporter: during the encounter, officers issuing more than 70 commands to nichols. the officers appearing to take more than 20 minutes after the beating ends before attempting any aid. ambulances arriving about two minutes later. the badly beaten father of one died in the hospital three days after this encounter. now, questions are being raised about the other unidentified officers on the scene, including this officer.

>> after the initial encounter with my son, there was a white officer that was tasing my son, and we don't understand how come his name was not put out there. >> reporter: so far, two memphis fire personnel, as well as two shelby county sheriff's deputies, have been placed on leave pending investigations. attorneys for two of the former officers, desmond mills jr. and emmitt martin, saying their clients intend to plead not guilty. mills' attorney releasing a statement saying, we are confident that the questions of whether desmond crossed the lines that others crossed and whether he committed the crimes charged will be answered with a resounding no. abc news reached out to the attorneys representing former officers justin smith, tadarrius bean, but have not heard back, and an attorney for demetrius haley declined to comment. throughout the weekend, peaceful protests from coast to coast. calls for justice in tyre's name. meanwhile, nichols' family asking that this is how he is remembered, the young man who

loved photography and skateboarding. this video of nichols doing what he loved with the sun shining around him has gone viral. and this photo distributed by his family showing him as a loving father, capturing the man described as kind and gentle. the district attorney says more charges are an option. the investigation is still ongoing. so more individuals could be charged at a later time. i spoke with one of the attorneys representing one of the former officers, desmond mills jr., and he says that the level of culpability for the officers is different. he also says that his client regrets what happened. linsey? >> so more charges still possible, stephanie. thank you. in the wake of that release of that graphic video, calls are now intensifying for national action on police reform. our senior congressional correspondent rachel scott is on capitol hill with the latest on that. good morning, rachel. >> reporter: hey, linsey, good morning. look, bottom line, this is going

to be an uphll challenge. i'm told the members of the congressional black caucus are in talks to meet witht at to meet as early as this week. the president is pushing congress to pass the george floyd justice and policing act. now this would ban chokeholds, no-knock warrants. it would also make it easier to charge an offending officer. there was clear bipartisan momentum to try to get something done after the death of george floyd, but those talks failed without a deal over a year ago. republicans wanted legislation that was more narrow in scope, and it's clear that lawmakers are divided once again. republican congressman jim jordan says he does not believe that there is any federal law that could be put in place that would stop the, quote, evil that he saw from the officers in memphis. now, after the death of george floyd, memphis did make some changes to its police department, including putting in place de-escalation training as well as limits on excessive use of force, but the naacp says it's clear that more needs to be done and they said if congress fails to act, they're

writing, quote, another obituary. >> we're sending condolences to that family. you're hearing the parents of tyre nichols have been invited to the state of the union. will they go? >> reporter: they have accepted that invitation. they want to make sure this issue stays center stage. >> thank you, rachel. george? >> thanks, linsey. now to the rising tensions between israelis and palestinians fueled by a new surge in violence. secretary blinken arrives in jerusalem this morning, and james longman is on the scene. good morning, james. >> reporter: good morning, george. we are right outside the synagogue where that terror attack played out friday night, and we are hearing extraordinary stories of bravery. there was a couple nearby having shabbat diner, friday night dinner when they heard the gunfire. they rushed out. the man tried to take on the shooter. he was killed. his wife tried to help one of the victims. she was shot and later died as well. antony blinken's visit here comes at a very delicate time. this morning, secretary of state

antony blinken arriving in jerusalem. israeli state tv has blamed iran. this morning the jerusalem post is reporting that israel carried out the strike using three dones near this city, home to a large air base and several nuclear sites, apparently an attempt to contain iran's nuclear program. officials of iran have called it cowardly, but the growing violence here will be top of the agenda. secretary blinken will meet israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu as well as mahmoud abbas. friday, a 21-year-old palestinian man opened fire at a synagogue, killing seven and wounded three others. israeli security forces have sealed off the home of the shooter. it's expected to be demolished soon. netanyahu saying, we are not seeking escalation, but we are prepared for any scenario. israeli government has now

increased gun permits for licensed civilians. israeli troops led a raid that killed nine palestinians. it's considered to be the deadliest in years. gaza militants fired rockets towards israel in response. that triggered a series of israeli air strikes on hamas. the context of all this is the recent election of the most right-wing government in this country's history, and the weakening legitimacy of a palestinian authority. it's a dangerous combination. george? >> it certainly is. okay, james, thanks. now to the latest on the war in ukraine. russia is targeting civilians as president zelenskyy pleads for longer range missiles and fighter jets to help ukraine prevail over putin's forces. tom soufi burridge is on the scene in ukraine. good morning, tom. >> reporter: good morning, george. a series of deadly russian strikes in eastern and southern ukraine over the weekend, and russian forces now launching sustained assaults on multiple parts of the front lines with ukrainian commanders telling us, new weaponry, including those advanced tanks, can't get here soon enough. this morning, russian rockets

raining down. journalists desperately seeking cover as residential buildings are struck in the southern city of kherson. in total, three civilians killed, and overnight, another deadly russian missile strike. one resident of this building killed in kharkiv, ukraine's second biggest city, and chaos and carnage after a missile attack on another town near the front lines. three people killed here according to officials as putin escalates the offensive in eastern ukraine. russian assaults on the ukrainian lines constant according to president zelenskyy. [ speaking in non-english ] the ukrainian leader saying, weapon supplies to ukraine must speed up. it comes as the u.s., germany, and others work to get advanced tanks into ukraine. our team given access to a ukrainian tank division hidden in the woods, doing maintenance.

we're waking up to a windchill temperature of about zero degrees here in chicago. the snow moved in over the weekend, and now the deep freeze is rolling in. and now across the country, dealing with bitterly cold temperatures. in parts of minnesota and north dakota, windchills that feel like a bone-chilling 50 below zero. all this on top of the snow that fell the last few days and over the weekend creating problems on roads across the region. in iowa, spinouts in vehicles sliding off roadways as crews work to clear and salt the roads. and the cold in these areas is sticking around for at least the next few days. the good news is, in chicago and a few other areas, the temperature will be back in the 30s by the weekend. rebecca? >> got to love that, alex. where we celebrate the 30s in chicago. thank you for braving it all for us, alex perez. ginger, by the way, has more on the new record right here in new york city. she is in central park.

hey, ginger. >> reporter: hey there. this is belvedere castle, one of the sites that has never moved and since 1869, we've never been this late in the season without measurable snow. we have now broken the record, and we've also had our warmest january on record and we're not alone here in new york city. look at that map. the warmest january on record in all those spots that are highlighted. very different where alex is, and february coming in with a bang for a lot of people. we'll see windchill alerts all the way to amarillo, but an ice storm is developing, guys. this is going to be a two-day event. it's from dallas to paducah. this could be one that takes down power lines and becomes a big issue. guys? >> all right, ginger, thanks so much. linsey? and we turn now to the super bowl. teams are set for the showdown with the eagles facing off against the chiefs in less than two weeks in arizona. new yorkers not too happy about the empire state building lighting up in honor of those teams. some people saying the empire state building, you're dead to me. some people thought the empire state building lost a bet.

>> here's the pass down the field, and look at the catch. >> reporter: late in the fourth quarter, mahomes legging out a first down on his injured ankle. the chiefs then pushed closer on this penalty as mahomes was hit once he was already out of bounds. >> and a flag's coming in. >> reporter: kansas city then winning it with a field goal in the final seconds. >> all the way, it's good. >> at the end of the game there, i had to run to get the first down and got us into field goal range. >> reporter: in the nfc championship game, the eagles soaring over the san francisco 49ers, backed by a raucous and star-studded home crowd. the 49ers decimated by injuries. surprise star rookie quarterback brock purdy, previously undefeated as a starter in the nfl, injuring his elbow in the first quarter. his replacement josh johnson then exiting the game with an apparent head injury, leaving san francisco with no quarterbacks for much of the game. ultimately the eagles clobbering the 49ers 31-7. >> fly, eagles, fly. >> reporter: philly fans jubilant in the streets post-game.

much of it on police cameras and some of it in alex murdaugh's own words. this morning, disgraced south carolina attorney alex murdaugh back in court for the first full week of testimony in his double murder trial. >> i mean, i pulled up and i could see 'em and, you know, i knew something was bad. i ran out. i knew it was really bad. my boy over there, i could see. >> reporter: murdaugh accused of killing his wife and son in june 2021. on friday, the state playing for the first time a video recording from the night of the murders. investigators interviewing murdaugh inside a car. >> and i ran over to maggie, and actually, i think i tried to turn paul over first. >> did you touch maggie at all? >> i did. i touched them both. i tried to take -- i mean, i tried to do it as limited as possible, but i tried to take their pulse on both of them. >> reporter: prosecutors pointing out the gruesome, bloody crime scene, questioning how murdaugh looked that night

with one of the agents who interviewed him. >> how would you describe his hands? >> they were clean. clean. >> how would you describe his arms? >> they were clean. >> how would you describe his t-shirt? >> clean. >> reporter: murdaugh's team countering, saying the fact they were clean shows he wasn't involved. the state laying out their case to the newly-seated jury, zeroing in on murdaugh's story, including his alibi. >> my mom's a late-stage alzheimer's patient. my dad's in the hospital. i went to check on them. >> did you find that unusual? >> i did. with her being an alzheimer's patient, they tend to be worse at night. i seemed it was strange to go visit. >> reporter: but the defense arguing that murdaugh was just being a good son. >> and do you recall him saying that his father, mr. randolph murdaugh, had just been put in the hospital that very day? >> that's correct. >> that context, it's -- you don't criticize a son who goes early onset dementia on the very

day in the afternoon that the father is admitted to the hospital. >> no, i didn't criticize. i just made a mental note that that was interesting. >> and this isn't the last of the video we will see in this case. the state on day one telling the jury there is a snapchat video to come, as well as testimony about location data from their cell phones, all of which they think is critical to this case. george? >> okay, eva, thanks. let's bring in our legal analyst, dan abrams. what's the strategy by prosecutors leading off with this video? >> there's a number of things they want here. first, they want the substance of what he's saying, right? they want to identify exactly where he's saying he was that night because they believe that they can show that that isn't true. they also want to show what he's wearing and how he's acting. what do his clothes look like? what does his body look like? why is there no evidence at all of him having touched the bodies, et cetera? as he said, they're considering the possibility of changing

but he also spoke of lindsay's deteriorating condition, and said nothing matched the real love she had for her kids. this morning, the husband of the massachusetts woman, accused of killing her three children, has forgiven her and is asking the public to do the same. patrick clancy making a statement saying, quote, the real lindsay was generously loving and caring towards everyone, me, our family, friends, and her patients. our affiliate wcvb spoke to a family member. >> just beautiful, beautiful children. >> reporter: according to police, patrick clancy called 911 tuesday after his wife lindsay attempted suicide. first responders then found his kids ages 5, 3, and 8 months old unconscious inside the home with traumatic injuries. two of the children died that same day. the 8-month-old a few days later. lindsay is currently hospitalized, facing murder and assault charges.

>> before a defense can be started or even discussions of trial, she has to be proven competent to stand trial and to be able to aid in her defense. >> reporter: in his post, patrick clancy writes about the couple's relationship saying, in part, quote, nothing matched her intense love for our kids and dedication to being a mother. it was all she ever wanted. her passion taught me how to be a better father. lindsay, who worked as a labor and delivery nurse, was open about her struggles with post-partum depression. according to "the boston globe," she wrote on facebook six weeks after the birth of her third child she was feeling dialed in after focusing on her fitness and mental health. >> this is a depression that can present as low mood, low energy, decreased motivation. >> reporter: both postpartum depression and postpartum psychosis are conditions that can occur after childbirth.

however, postpartum psychosis is rare and can lead to suicidal or homicidal thoughts. postpartum depression is not a risk factor for postpartum psychosis. authorities haven't commented on lindsay's mental health but say everything is being looked into. it's also important to note that in the u.s. we don't have any particular legislation that addresses postpartum psychosis, george. >> mona, thanks very much. let's bring in our chief medical correspondent dr. jen ashton. mona had an important distinction there. postpartum psychosis and postpartum depression. >> first some medical terminology, george. psychosis, the definition is impaired judgment and reality testing. it is rare. 1 in 500 to 1 in 1,000, and it is a true medical emergency. this is mental illness. it can present with signs and symptoms like confusion, hallucinations, delusion, paranoia, obsessive thoughts and then of course, tragically attempts to harm oneself or the baby. this is a completely different entity than postpartum depression. >> and postpartum depression, far more common. >> absolutely more common. occurs typically more slowly where as psychosis appearing

more acutely, days and weeks. postpartum depression can be gradual, weeks to months. >> what are the symptoms? >> like depression in anyone else. appetite changes, loss of interest, fear of being alone with the baby. that also can be a medical emergency, but again, they're really distinct entities and i have to tell you i have been an ob/gyn for 22 years. i have never seen a case of postpartum psychosis. i've seen many, many cases of postpartum depression. >> how about treatment? >> this is really important. this is a really all hands on deck approach for everyone around that new mom and baby. and if that woman is having any of these signs and symptoms, step number one, you want to contact her obstetrician or midwife and intervention is warranted for either. medication can be life-saving, but, you know, if in that situation the place to take that woman is an emergency room. >> jen ashton, thanks very much.
