the roadways behind me are quiet, so drivers are heeding the warning as sleet is starting to come down in this area. as you just mentioned there is now a winter storm warning that has been extended to thursday. that means these conditions are not expected to let up. a half inch to an inch of ice is expected to accumulate throughout the day causing big worries about the roadways and the power grid. overnight across texas, treacherous driving conditions. several semi trucks sliding and colliding into each other shutting down part of the highway. drivers spinning, and struggling to gain traction. despite caution signs, this red pickup flying down the road then sliding off. that driver just barely able to get it back under control. the slick icy conditions leading to cars losing control and crashing. this white pickup getting off an exit ramp sliding down it sideways and this sports car skidding luckily coming to a stop before crashing, and as this car slides, two other drivers barely miss crashing

into it. many drivers wrecking leaving on stretchers. some needing a pull to get back on the road while others helping dig out, dropping salt to give tires something to grip on to. in san antonio, workers for the first time are using beet juice as a de-icing agent saying it's less corrosive than salt. this truck left dangling off a highway in colorado.fidat thousands of flights canceled or delayed across the country. school has been cancelled in all the major districts in this area. but the good news is the power grid is holding up. as of right now no major injuries or deaths reported because of this storm but, this weather is expected to continue over the next few days. >> best to try to stay off the roads down there if possible. mireya, thank you. now we go to

alex perez in frigid chicago which is getting blasted by the arctic air. good morning to you, alex. >> reporter: good morning, linsey. it feels like 11 below zero, in fact, some 20 million americans are dealing with subzero windchills this morning, and when it's this cold the key is to wear lots of layers and, of course, cover up exposed skin because this can be very dangerous. i want you to look at this shot. a thermal imaging camera to show you how quickly heat exits the body. you should be able to see colors around my face. all of that is heat exiting my body right now. now, some 28 states across the country are dealing with alerts because of this arctic freeze s that has spread over a huge chunk of the country. limit your time outdoors. with these temperatures, frostbite can begin to set in less than ten minutes, george. >> okay, alex, thanks. to ginger for more on where it's headed next.

>> remember, freezing rain, which is caused that slick ice that causes all the accidents, that's rain that falls on a subzero surface. it freezes on contact and then you get that glaze of ice. this is why we're concerned, because there is a huge chunk of our nation including arkansas, western tennessee and a huge part of texas that's going to see the rounds of the pink, the pink is where you see that ice. it can fall as sleet, sleet more like pellets, right, has a beat. sleet has a beat but the accretion of ice, interstate 40, interstate 35.houro critic. how ch power lines and trow then it's super cold, we're talking about 18 below north platte, the feels like, des moines, tuesday morning here, 8 below for des moines and chicago 7 below, look what happens as this moves east, we could see some of the coldest windchills in new england this weekend that we've seen in 40 years. >> i'm not looking forward to that. no one is but thank you so much, ginger. now to new fallout following the release of the body cam video of the police beating of

tyre nichols. three memphis first responders have been fired, and we're learning two other officers were relieved of duty. stephanie ramos is in memphis with more for us this morning. good morning, stephanie. >> reporter: michael, good morning. the city of memphis relieving more officers who were present the night tyre nichols was brutally beaten. his family says they want all of those involved in his death to be terminated and prosecuted and you can see in that video, many officers responding to that scene. we do want to warn you the video you are about to see is disturbing to watch. this morning, growing pressure on the handling of the death investigation of tyre nichols after three first responders were fired and additional officers are off the job following the release of that disturbing video from the now fatal traffic stop. >> we are looking at everybody. >> reporter: the memphis fire department says two emts, jamichael sandridge and robert long and their lieutenant,

michelle whitaker, have been fired after failing to assess nichols on the scene after he was brutally beaten. he died three days later at the hospital. >> what our office has to decide is not whether administrative protocols weren't found or whether they didn't do a good job, but whether they actually violated a criminal law, such that criminal prosecution is warranted. >> reporter: memphis police say in addition to the five officers fired and charged with second-degree murder, two other memphis police officers have been relieved of duty and are under investigation. including preston hemphill also a member of the now-disbanded scorpion unit, created to patrol high-crime hot spots. police say hemphill was the third officer to respond to the initial scene seen here on his body camera video released by the city. later, you can hear hemphill say this. >> i hope they stomp his [ bleep ]. >> reporter: the family of tyre nichols wondering why there

seemed to be a delay in identifying hemphill. saying in a statement, it certainly begs the question why the white officer involved this this brutal attack was shielded and protected from the public eye and to date from sufficient discipline and accountability, but memphis police tell abc news it is protocol to immediately release names of officers fired, not relieved of duty. hemphill has not been charged. the five former officers all black seen in the disturbing video repeatedly beating and kicking nichols, giving nichols more than 70 commands in 13 minutes. as the family prepares to lay the young father and avid skateboarder to rest wednesday, his mother hoping her son's death will bring about change in the police system. >> i guess tyre had to be sacrificed in order for the greater good and so i'm going to hold onto that and i'm going to hold onto it until i get justice for my son. >> reporter: as for the sixth officer relieved, preston

hemphill, of duty, his attorney says he's cooperating with the investigation, michael. more alleged victims of the rom- memphis scorpion unit. >> reporter: exactly, michael. the attorney for the family of tyre nichols says they will hold a press conference later today and people who have been brutalized by the scorpion unit will speak. we do want to mention the memphis police department has not commented on those allegations against the now disbanded unit, michael. >> stephanie ramos, thank you. george. now to president biden hurting the road ahead of next week's state of the union to highlight the bipartisan package to upgrade america's infrastructure that he signed into law 15 months ago. terry moran there. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, george. president biden trying to get the word out that things are actually getting done with that infrastructure law. in baltimore yesterday, at the decrepit 150-year-old baltimore and potomac tunnel, which is so crucial to freight and passenger

rail traffic on the east coast, now being rebuilt with up to $4.6 billion in federal funding and creating as many as 20,000 new construction jobs. he's in new york city today announcing funding for a new tunnel under the hudson river and on friday he'll be in philadelphia talking about replacing lead pipes and ensuring clean water. all part of this more than 7,000 new projebcts that will be launching in the coming months under that massive spending bill. it's not just infrastructure. this is part of a cascade of new federal spending, green energy spending, semiconductor manufacturing. republicans with warning about inflation, and they won't raise the debt ceiling unless cuts are made. >> they're meeting tomorrow and debt limit top of the schedule. >> reporter: president biden plans to confront kevin mccarthy

on these issues. he's going to ask him to pledge to avoid a potentially catastrophic default on the national debt as mitch mcconnell and others have. he'll ask republicans to put their cards on the table, their budget, what their spending cuts would look like. >> terry moran, thanks. now to secretary of state antony blinken in jerusalem meeting with israeli and palestinian leaders amid escalating tensions and a surge in deadly violence. james longman is on the scene in jerusalem. good morning, james. >> reporter: yeah, good morning, george. antony blinken is in the west bank now meeting with palestinian leaders during this huge surge in violence here in the holy land. friday's terror attack on a synagogue was the deadliest by a palestinian against israelis in more than a decade and israeli operations and palestinian communities have killed 35 people in january. thang em eight children. it makes it the bloodiest january since 2015. secretary blinken also had some vague criticism for the new

right-wing government here in israel, not just about what it means for the conflict with palestine but also for the rule of law here more general. secretary blinken is now meeting with the palestinian leader mahmoud abbas about the two state solution reaffirming the united states' commitment to that solution but mahmoud abbas is losing legitimacy. a lot of palestinians are fed up with him after 18 years in power. it feels like we're on the road to more violence, not peace, george. >> boy, it certainly does. okay, james, thanks very much. linsey. we turn to the new report out overnight with a positive outlook on our nation's economy. our chief economic correspondent rebecca jarvis is here with more. rebecca, good news, it sounds like we might avoid a recession. >> that's right, linsey, good morning to you. the u.s. will avoid a recession and the global economy will be more resilient this year than many had feared. that is the headline from the imf's predictions out overnight.

while inflation continues to wear on consumers around the world with american families now spending about $350 more every month on the same goods and services as they did a year ago, it appears the fed's fight to tame it is helping and consumers here in the u.s. are faring and weathering these higher interest rates, the more expensive credit card bills without dramatically pulling back on spending. while the economy is forecast to slow this year, the other big factor driving a more upbeat forecast is china's recent decision to lift its zero-covid policies that forced millions of people to stay home as they get back out into the world they travel. that lends itself to the big economy and the imf is upbeat here, but there are a handful of others forecasting a recession including the world bank which says the world will come perilously close to it in 2023. the bottom line, the u.s. economy is really holding up, michael. >> that is some good news, thank you so much, rebecca. now we're going to celebrate the life of cindy williams, the "laverne & shirley" actress became a household name for

her mother priscilla is now contesting her will, that's all coming up. the latest on an urgent manhunt for the suspect on the run. he's accused of brutally beating a woman. police say he's possibly still using dating apps to find victims and women to help him evade police. chief national correspondent matt gutman joins us now with the latest. >> reporter: good morning, michael. benjamin foster is a suspect who is accused of torturing his victims. he's already evaded s.w.a.t. teams and now the fbi and the u.s. marshals are searching for a man they say likely armed and extremely dangerous. this morning, the manhunt intensifying. oregon police searching for a suspect accused of torturing women. >> it's essentially an all hands on deck operation. we are laser focused. >> reporter: authorities say 36-year-old benjamin foster is on the run and possibly using dating apps to find victims or even find women who can help him avoid police. the manhunt began last tuesday in grants pass, oregon, when justine siemens was found by police bound and beaten nearly

to death. she's now on life support. in a statement her family says she will survive this and as her family we implore the nation to help bring her attacker to justice. foster now wanted for attempted murder, kidnapping and assault. >> you described him as extremely dangerous. why is that? >> the scene was horrific. this is a bad man that needs to be captured. we don't believe he is randomly picking people. we believe he is formulating a relationship with people. >> reporter: while he has evaded capture police say he's possibly still active on dating apps which he may be using to lure other unsuspecting women to attack or to help him evade capture. >> a man that has displayed the horrific acts of violence that he has done thus far, i wouldn't put anything past this man. >> reporter: foster has a prior history of domestic violence convicted in two separate cases of attacking women in las vegas in the past five years.

investigators days after his son paul and wife maggie were shot to death on the family's property. >> she was a wonderful girl and a wonderful wife. and she was a great mom. >> reporter: murdaugh at times seeming to break down laying out what he was doing that night. >> i actually fell asleep on the couch. >> okay. and what time did you -- >> i don't know exactly what time i woke up, but y'all get my phone, you know, i think one of the first things i did when i got up was call maggie because i was going to my mom's and i know i texted her. >> reporter: cell phone records show murdaugh texted his wife at 9:02 p.m. prosecutors saying that alex's cell phone puts him on the property at the time of the murders. murdaugh calling 911 about an hour later and what he told investigators in the newly released interview raising questions. >> it was just so bad. i did him so bad. > what did he say?

>> it was just so bad. his head no appearing to mouth that's not what i said. meanwhile, earlier in the day the state showing the trove of guns found on the family's property. >> this is the 300 blackout rifle which i secured. >> reporter: the state has not found the murder weapons. murdaugh sharing with investigators paul was missing the same type of rifle used to kill maggie. >> paul had a 300 blackout, and it got, you know, he says it got stolen, you know, and it's been gone for some time. i wasn't totally convinced it was stolen. >> okay. >> as opposed to lost. >> reporter: this comes as the defense really puts the state's evidence under the microscope. both victims were killed with different guns and a crime scene investigator admitting she could not rule out the possibility of two shooters. >> one explanation would be two shooters. one explanation.

presley. back now with the battle over lisa marie presley's will. her mother, priscilla, is contesting it. trevor ault here with the details. good morning, trevor. >> reporter: good morning, george. lisa marie presley, of course, the only child of elvis and a star in her own right and now according to court documents her mother priscilla says she was cut out of lisa marie's trust and she wants a judge to get that overturned. this morning, a court battle brewing just weeks after the shocking death of lisa marie presley, her mother priscilla contesting the will saying she should have access to the trust. now in response to this court challenge a source close to the late lisa marie says she and her mother had an estranged relationship and they believe priscilla's filing contesting the will is a money grab. according to court documents in 2016 lisa marie removed priscilla and her former business manager brian seigel as trustees, but priscilla is questioning the authenticity of that amendment claiming lisa marie presley's signature appears inconsistent with her usual and customary signature

so it's always an uphill battle. >> how ugly could it get if riley and priscilla don't agree? >> very ugly. you would think that priscilla would have already reached out before filing this, so this really could get pretty uncomfortable. >> potentially a lot of money at stake here. how common are these kind of fights in these situations? >> this is exactly the sort of situation where it does happen. it'so no uomn. when i say this is the kind of situation, i mean where the person who had been the trustee isn't notified, right, and then say, wait, what are you saying? there was some change? i didn't know about it, et cetera. those are the kinds of that the amendment was see effectively invalid. >> you don't have to let them know you changed it. >> actually you do. >> you do? >> that's one of the arguments. >> that's her argument. >> one of her arguments is,

stays that way, thank you so much. now we turn to the new fallout following the release of the body cam video of the police beating of tyre nichols. three memphis first responders have been fired. let's go back to stephanie ramos in memphis with more. good morning, again, stephanie. >> reporter: hey there, michael. the family of tyre nichols wants all the officers involved in his death to be terminated and prosecuted. i spoke with the district attorney who said his office is looking at everyone, every officer, every person who was on the scene the night tyre nichols was brutally beaten, but he also says it is going to take some time to identify the role each person played. we do want to warn you, the video you are about to see is disturbing. the memphis fire department says two emts, jamichael sandridge and robert long and their lieutenant michelle whitaker have been fired after failing to adequately assess nichols on the scene after he was brutally beaten january 7th dying three days later at the hospital. >> what our office has to decide

is actually if they violated a criminal law. >> reporter: memphis police say in addition to the five officers fired and charged with second-degree murder, two other memphis police officers have been relieved of duty and are under investigation including preston hemphill seen here on his body camera video released by the city. the family of tyre nichols wondering why there seems to be a delay in identifying hemphill saying in a statement, it certainly begs the question why the white officer involved this this brutal attack was shielded and protected from the public eye and to date from sufficient discipline and accountability. but memphis police tell abc news it is protocol to immediately release names of officers fired, not relieved of duty, hemphill has not been charged. as the family prepares to lay the young father and avid skateboarder to rest wednesday, his mother hoping her son's death will bring about change in the police system. >> i'm going to hold on to it until i get justice for my son.

>> tell us about this study. >> british medical journal, a large study, 60 years of age and older followed these people for ten years really looking at what can we do if anything in terms of our behavior to slow our declining memory that is very common with age. they looked at people with and without that gene mutation that is associated with cognitive impairment and looked at six factors and they found if people engaged in more of these factors, the more the better kind of not surprising, they had a 90% lower chance of going on to suffer cognitive impairment than the groups who didn't do these things so, again, powerful association between our behavior and what happens to our brain. >> this is a ten-year study. what type of healthy behaviors are we talking about? >> so let's go through the six and we have to remember this is an all or none. people who did these things never, average amount of times per week and then a lot so physical exercise, not smoking, alcohol was a big one and the

people who did the best in the study never consumed alcohol, diet was actually the biggest factor and, again, healthy diet, lots of vegetables and low saturated fat, cognitive activity which would be something like reading or playing cards and then social contact. even chatting online, meeting with friends, people who engaged in those behaviors did really, really well as we aged. >> personally i'm pretty good on some of those. alcohol, which is timely because end of dry january which i know that you did. so -- >> i did a damp january. >> a damp january. you did pretty well but what are some of the benefits of cutting down on alcohol? >> i have to emphasize this, in terms of alcohol really less is better. that is not a gray zone here so when you talk about abstaining, cutting out alcohol even lowering your risk, there are significant improvements to our heart health, to our liver function, to our quality of sleep, our skin, mental health

hearing a silver bullet. a recipe to basically feel like they're enough. and if you are a certain weight and a certain shape and a certain number on the scale, then you can be lovable by god. you can be lovable to yourself. you can be lovable to others and anything shy of that is a sin. and she tapped into that real self-loathing that i think is epidemic and basically i consider her to be the personification of eating disorders, that she is the voice that people with eating disorders hear which is, unless i'm down those four pounds, i don't exist. >> she mentions the voice of god. >> she says it is god. god is her boyfriend. >> ooh. >> at first she said i've always

love at the moment because there's two things that i saw, i saw so many people who had amazing professional lives but they were struggling in their personal lives and then i saw lots of people who had great good personal lives and even if their professional lives were struggling they were able to figure it out and when you look at what we've all been through in the past three years i think we need a lot more love, not just for our partners, our children, our parents but for all beings, for everyone around us, so i found it through observing people's challenges and problems. >> and so many people look to you for advice. i want to talk to you about the four stages of love. you explain them in your book. can you walk us through those briefly? >> yeah, i think we often think you like someone and then you fall in love with them. it's as simple as that and actually there's four stages, practicing love -- sorry, preparing for love, practicing love, protecting love and perfecting love, and this is a journey from connecting with yourself to then finding chemistry with someone else to

then learning about your compactability and finally character, and i think we often think of relationships as just chemistry and so these four stages broaden it out to be much more about three different levels. >> you really walk your readers through how to get to those stages of protecting and then perfecting. we were talking in the break about our personal journeys and you really do have such good advice. for folks who are already in relationships, maybe long term or even married, what advice would you give this morning on how to keep that spark alive? that's always a hot topic. >> i have a four e formula. four different things you can do with your partner and currently we only do one out of the four. that is entertainment. watching tv, watching movies, but there's three other levels, the next level is experiences and experiments, try something nw. when was the last time you did something for the first time with your partner. we're used to watching them do the same things, do same activities. let's see them do something fresh and new. the next level is education, learn something with them. do something that helps you both

grow. maybe it's a book, a podcast. >> a new language. >> a language, something that you feel like you're both going in the same direction, and the highest is engagement which is serving together. could you go help out at a homeless shelter or a soup kitchen? when you go and transform the lives of other people together it transforms your relationship and it brings you closer than anything can. >> it ultimately is all about self-love. >> exactly. >> i was following, of course, ben and jen, and you were lucky enough to officiate at their wedding. it looked so beautiful and i know it was all about mindfulness. and meditation. >> yeah, i think that a wedding day is so important, a ceremony is so powerful and the last thing you want, there's so many emotions at a wedding ceremony, right, everyone has thought, emotions and i just love people being mindful so we practiced being mindful with our sight, with our scent and our sounds and be really present in that beautiful environment so that was a process i guided everyone through. >>ha be sp iwa sci. >> and lucky for them they had
