numbers, western monarch butterflies seem to make eight -- him to be making a comeback in the bay area. experts say the recent storms can take a toll on the population. monarch butterflies are on the endangered list because of fast dwindling numbers. today a society released the final numbers. a monarchs were spotted across the area. the result of a second count conducted earlier this month could undo that progress. >> in general over the last seven years of conducting these follow-up counts we have seen 30 to 50% decline from the thanksgiving count to the new year's count. because the storms were so intense and back to back this year, it seems reasonable to assume there might be increased mortality. >> is not the direction we wanted to go. the results from the new year's count are expected to be released in february.
