temperatures in the 50's by lunchtime. later in the day, mid-50's to low 60's. rain does return to the forecast by the end of the week. reggie: a child is recov after authorities say he was attacked by a mountain lion. the san mateo sheriffs county says it happen just before 7:00 last night. he was conscious when he was taken to a trauma center after the attack. video of the area shows conditions that are made for wildlife. neighbors say they are not surprised to hear that there was a mountain lion in the area. the california department of fish and wildlife says it is investigating this reported attack. kumasi: the new alameda county district attorney is preparing to reopen eight deadly police use of force cases. lena howland live with details about the new unit dedicated to investigating these cases. lena: good morning. the newly elected alameda county

district attorney, pamela price, has announced what she is calling a new unit called the public accountability unit, which will be reopening the investigations into eight different cases across the county, some of which happened right here in pleasanton. the cases range from as far back as 2007 up to some high-profile instances, such as those of mario gonzalez, joshua and gloria chavez, incidents that happened in pleasanton, hayward and fremont. community advocates say she's following through on promises made during her campaign to hold police accountable. a criminal defense attorney who has represented police officers accused conducda's decision to n previously investigated cases is a waste of time and taxpayer money. >> their

responders on leave. more audio and video of the arrest could be released. reggie: here in the bay area, an event called kneeling for tyre will take place on the steps of san francisco city hall this morning at 11:00 a.m. organizers are gathering in solitary to demand justice. kumasi: people in san mateo county and half moon bay are remembering the victims killed in recent shootings. >> ♪ you are so loved ♪ kumasi: the community gathered for an interfaith service and candlelight procession in half moon bay. a gunman killed seven people at two farms last week. the investigation revealed how some local farmworkers have been living. help for the farmworkers will stop of mind of the service. >> we need to grieve and then try to move forward and get back to where we were and hopefully, i think a very important message is to make the conditions for

the farmworkers, improve them a lot. kumasi: the last stop in the candlelight procession was ids hall on main street, where friends and family of the shooting victims found out what happened. last night, it was the site of dinner and fellowship. reggie: the san mateo county board of supervisors is honoring the first week of february as national gun violence survivors week. supervisors are discussing the path to move forward and figure out mental health and proper living situations for farmworkers. it's an effort to prevent a tragedy like the one that took the life of seven workers. >> but these mass killings continue to occur. things need to change. government cannot solve all the issues, nor can nonprofits, can business but when we work together and we are strong, we provide a united threat. reggie:

governor newsom to use our resources to provide farmworkers with a safe and quality life. kumasi: governor newsom scheduled to announce new gun legislation -- gun safety legislation today. he will be joined by the attorney general and state senator from berdych as well as gun safety advocates. this is in the wake -- from burbank as well as those gun safety advocates. this is in the wake of those half moon bay shootings. reggie: the atherton city council just voted to move forward with their plan despite resistance. the plan would turn a single property on oakwood boulevard into townhomes. many residents are not happy, including staff and aisha curry. according to our media partners, the curries sent in emailed to the mayor expressing privately and safety concerns. others voiced opposition during last night's council meeting. >> multi family site would also say president that pet projects

on private property that are not on arterial roads is acceptable. >> we have real, genuine needs for affordable housing. we have almost no one who works in atherton can afford to live in atherton. reggie: the state issued this mandate as part of an effort to build more than 400,000 new units of housing over the next eight years. if cities don't submit a plan to the state, developers will be allowed to build housing that fits state standards, even if the project is larger or denser than what the local zoning allows. kumasi: a battle is building in one san francisco neighborhood. residents along maribel street in bernal heights have been asked to remove what the city calls unpermitted encroachments, or benches neighbors and say. they have made various enhancements to make the street more family-friendly. some are now complaining that the stone benches that have been added, they just don't like them i guess.

reggie: there are new developments in november's oakland scho ba judge has authoe ballots for the election. it comes weeks after the register's office. found an error resnick is sitting on oakland unified school board for district 4. my conscience and says he feels confident he will be declared the winner. >> this feels like a necessary step and hopefully this will reaffirm the numbers that we have been given, which show that i won the election in district 4. reggie: we reached out to resnick and the registrar's office and have not heard back. the review does not overturn the results but this is one step in

that process. a review is set for next friday to determine next steps. kumasi: the bay area is about to get a big-time cash infusion for transportation. california leaders have announced more than a billion dollars will be dedicated to a handful of overbudget programs. bart will get $625 million. caltrain is cashing in million to finish its electrification project. governor newsom has terminated 26 different states of emergency in california, some of those that date back to 2017. they include things like the tugs and outlets fires, multiple earthquakes, storm period and the monkeypox virus. in october, governor newsom announced of the covid-19 emergency wood and at the end of this month. reggie: there's a new area code in parts of the bay area. 369 will overlay the current area for 707 numbers.

black or african-american on public documents for at least 10 years and meet two of eight additional criteria. kumasi: a young child has been attacked by a mountain lion and rural san mateo county -- in rural san mateo county. gloria: the sheriffs office says the child was taken to a limo trauma center but we don't know the child's condition. deputies responded about 7:00 last night to tunitas creek road. we have some video of the area surrounding the road. neighbors say they are not surprised to hear about a mountain lion sighting in this rural area but they are surprised about an attack. the child was conscious when they were transported to the hospital. a man who lives near where this happens says he was the first on scene and says the child was on the backside of the property. >> they were pretty calm when i pulled up.

than 2000 flights have been canceled with at least 6300 delays reported across the country. those numbers are continuing to grow. three major airports in texas are reporting the bulk of the cancellations today. more cancellations are expected this afternoon as that severe winter storm makes its way to the east coast. at least two people have died due to slick roadways in texas. people are also experiencing power outages across the state. at least 7000 outages reported on tuesday. kumasi: happening today, the state will do its monthly snow survey in the sierra and we will find out just how big of a boost january storms provided. we got a hint that the snowpack is well above average, at its highest level since 1995. the first survey of the year had a snowpack at 177% of normal. the sierra snowpack is vital for helping in the drop. -- in the drought. reggie: we have compiled the

kumasi: paypal has become the latest bay area tech firm to announce layoffs. paypal says it will trim about 7% of its total workforce, or about 2000 full-time workers. the plan is to make reductions over several weeks. paypal is a parent of digital payment companies including venmo. google, microsoft, intel have announced layoffs in the past month. new developments on the working conditions inside twitter. according to the san francisco chronicle, san francisco building inspectors asked twitter's construction contractor to revise a building permit within 50 days in order to keep beds inside headquarters. conference rooms would need to be correctly labeled as sleeping areas in a floorplan.
