the sheriffs office says groups of teens are using toy guns to shoot gel balls at strangers at random. they got the idea from tiktok. good evening, i mama davis. dan: the sheriffs office says this new tiktok trend could land teenagers and some real trevor. -- some real trouble. reporter: dangerous trend reaching san mateo county. there been reports of half a dozen or b's attacks in the last few weeks. they believe different groups of teens are jumping out of vehicles and firing hydrated gel balls at strangers. >> we have reports of people

yelling shoot, shoot. you can imagine the dangers that come with that. reporter: the sergeant said they have had incidents in downtown san carlos. the activity is potentially tied to a social media trend which encourages people to shoot at unsuspecting targets. then they posted on tiktok. >> i don't know what to say about that. it propagates on social media. it's terrible. >> the more they see it the more they want to do it. reporter: the sheriffs office is asking parents to speak with their kids to make sure they are not participating in the trend for a number of reasons. >> is bad for the kids because if they open up on the wrong person, not a good idea for them. >> would've that person is legally carrying a concealed weapon? if you can imagine the danger behind that or what that could turn into. reporter: as of monday, the sergeant said no injuries have been reported. in some incidents, they have noted that the teens used frozen orbeez the attack.

it was the first deadly crash in san jose for 2023 after last years total reached more than 60. amadan: calling for lawmakers and social media companies to do more to limit the violent content. this was after a shooting at a synagogue. authorities arrested a man for the attack captured on video. that is what you are seeing here. he was accused of firing blank rounds inside this synagogue in the richmond district. a rabbi at says this was not the first time that he was near his synagogue. >> he has a twitter account where he posted him starting a fire outside the synagogue. the twitter account has nazi propaganda. dan: agencies like the anti-defamation league say it has become too common for hateful rhetoric to be shared on social media. >> the u.s. rem

ama: tonight we are getting a clearer picture of the devastation from the massive earthquake in turkey and syria. thousands are dead and the number is expected to go up. also there are questions with what the bay area would look like if an earthquake of that strength hit. tim johns in the studio that answer. >> the initial earthquake was 7.8 magnitude and since then, there have been hundreds of aftershocks, some as strong as magnitude six and seven. those caused widespread damage and destruction. i spoke with experts at the geological survey at which assured me that a quake of that size that struck here, we would not fare as bad as turkey but casualties would be a major risk. thousands dead syria after 7.8 magnitude earthquake rocked the area in the early hours of monday morning local time. the footage showing the devastation with entire neighborhoods completing destroyed.

i've police officers are charged with second-degree murder. ama: the legislature is seeing new bill proposals come in left and right while lawmakers are in session. one would ring california one clip -- one step closer to amsterdam. it would allow cannabis retailers to sell food and drinks inside the business. the lawmaker behind it is assembly member matt haney of san francisco. he says this would give cannabis retailers in other revenue source while they fight heavy taxes and regulations. >> california is a destination for wine and should be for cannabis. in order for that to happen can't just be the clinical pharmacy like environment. it would be huge opportunity for jobs, revenue, and our economy. ama: the american heart and lung association's essay consuming food where smoking occurs can pose health risks. if the bill passes it could go into effect as soon as next year. dan: the sun is shining but we all know the damage from last

month's storm is immense. a lot of people in the bay area are still recovering from the flooding and mudslides. tonight, one senator from california is working to get relief to these areas faster. senator alex padilla is producing two bills to congress this week. he says they will give the u.s. government more flex ability in providing federal disaster aid. state officials say that california's total up to $500 million in insured losses from last month's storms. it does not include road and infrastructure repair. ama: in the sierra, ski resorts are reporting ideal conditions on the slopes. officials say 15 inches of fresh powder fell over the weekend. the slopes are ready for a refresh. >> is exactly what we want to see and it had been a couple of weeks since we got snow and it gave us the perfect coding for some fresh writing. >> it was probably one of the better days of the season because of the way the snow sits
