with the choice of heat or eat. liz: kristen: there is a massive backup on highway four in the east bay due to a crash in antioch. this is video from sky 7. it appears that one vehicle is badly damaged and may have caught fire on the offramp. fire officials told us one person was injured. >> the fentanyl crisis. leaders in the south bay want to stop overdoses at the source after three people died of what appears to be a fentanyl overdose in unincorporated gilroy. dustin dorsey explains how santa clara county leaders are responding. >> on a small town road in gilroy yesterday, the deadly opioid crisis reared its head again. sheriffs's deputies found four men in their 50's unresponsive,

likely from fentanyl use. >> they provided lifesaving measures and applied narcan. unfortunately, three of the victims inside the house were pronounced dead. one male was transported to a local hospital. >> sergeant russell davis says fentanyl is the most dangerous drug in the country. stopping this crisis remains their top priority. part of that effort comes in finding out how this man got the fentanyl and the first place. >> we sent investigators to the residence to conduct a thorough investigation. if we have enough information to link this back to a person responsible, there will be homicide charges. >> we spoke with a group of friends at the home who said they were going to visit one of the victims in the hospital. they declined to speak on camera but told us the fentanyl crisis is getting out of hand. santa clara county leaders like dr. rachel sussman agrees. especially when it comes to youths.

>> this stakes of making a small mistake have never been higher. one of the crazy things about the fentanyl crisis is that it is happening in the face of decreasing drug use. >> yet, dr. sussman says they are dying more than ever before. a fentanyl working group has made strides in reactionary measures like having narcan available. the next step is preventing overdoses before they happen. >> we need to continue to not just work on the reactive piece, getting narcan to people, but the preventive piece of reducing supply and demand and making sure people have access to treatment. kristen: new details about a shootout involving san jose police. the chief said the shooter had stock officers. last weekend shootout left an officer injured. police released pictures and video.

orlando mendoza of san jose was spotted parked near two police stations hours before the battle. mendoza used a ghost gun to shoot at officers during a traffic stop. police returned fire and chased the shooter to a home where more shots were exchanged and mendoza surrendered. one officer was shot in the hip. the chief says the violence has shaken his department. >> this was a traumatic incident for all the men and women in this department and their families. our loved ones expect us to come home after every shift. we know there will be those trying to prevent that from happening. >> it is unconscionable to think that someone is out there actively targeting officers. kristen: the chief says mendoza had 14 prior misdemeanor convictions. none in the bay area. santa clara county supervisors are set to vote on whether to add nine members to the county's

gun violence task force. those members would include staff from the district attorney's office, sheriff's deputies, police officers and federal law enforcement. the goal is to better enforce california's red flag law which locks people from owning firearms if they have prior gun violence or domestic abuse incidents. larry: in the east bay, supporters of leronne armstrong are once again asking for him to be reinstated. the oakland mayor says this is still a personnel matter. ryan curry spoke with who want the federal oversight monitor to step down. >> reinstate armstrong. can we say that? reinstate armstrong. >> gathering in front of headquarters, supporters of laurent armstrong are calling on the mayor to reinstate him as police chief. >> you cannot get us to believe that somebody working this hard to keep their job does not love what they do.

[applause] larry: an alameda county sheriff's deputy who crashed his motorcycle on interstate 580 is going to be ok. this happened around 1:00 this afternoon on westbound 580 near foothill boulevard near san leandro. sky 7 flew over the scene after the deputy had already been transported. the sheriff says the injuries are minor. no word yet as to how exactly the crash occurred. kristen: a dangerous tiktok trend making its way to the bay area. san mateo county sheriff's deputies say teens are shooting gel beads at people.

it is connected to a tiktok challenge where teens shoot at unsuspecting victims. sergeant acosta says it is not only dangerous for the victim, but even the shooters can put themselves in danger. >> does a dangerous thing to do. what if that person is legally carrying a concealed weapon? imagine the danger behind that. what that could turn into. kristen: police are encouraging parents to talk to their children's of -- children. teens could face a misdemeanor or felony and a civil lawsuit could be filed against their parents. larry: san jose based zoom announcing it is cutting its workforce 15% per that's about 1300 jobs. the ceo said adjustments are needed after the company's large growth during the pandemic. also announced he is cutting his salary and reducing the executive leadership team's

salaries by 20% for the coming fiscal year. >> one of the things that makes zoom unusual is taking a pay cut. the ceo said, i am going to take a pay cut. i'm going to accept responsibility. we have not seen that from a lot of other silicon valley represented -- executives. one of the only other ones who has taken a pay cut is tim cook at apple, who took a cut to his potential salary, and he has not done layoffs. larry: in january, there were 50,000 job cuts in the industry. yesterday, dale cut 6600. kristen: another building at uc berkeley is being stripped of its name because its namesake was a racist. workers removed the name moses hall from the building that houses the institute of governmental studies. it had been named after bernard moses, a faculty member from 1875 until 1911. the decision comes after a review of his work noted intense

came up was housing. larry: mayor breed has outlined details of her housing for all plan which will add 82,000 affordable units to the city of san francisco in the next eight years. dion lim's lived with details on exactly what this means. >> san francisco is one bay area cities to have a housing plan certified by the state. it aims to remove barriers construction and zoning and be part of the overall economic recovery plan. keep in mind, this is complex with many hurdles to overcome. while speaking at a press conference tuesday, san francisco mayor london breed addressed the cities tour chris a plan to build 82,000 new housing units in the next eight years. >> part of the conversation and part of my plan is going to center around making changes that might make some people uncomfortable. increasing density, increasing height. making changes to transit

corridors to provide opportunities to build more. >> planning director rich hill lists says the city currently builds 3000 market-rate and affordable units a year but believes the mayor posner lee certified housing element plan to increase that number to 10,000 is attainable. he tells me the goal is to cut through red tape and fast-track zoning for primarily commercial areas of western and northern neighborhoods. with the vacancy rate hitting 27%, some empty offices could be converted to residential units. governor newsom has long hand paint on the promise of building millions of new homes. so far in the bay area, only san francisco and alameda have outlined detailed plans of how. mayor breed's office ads cities are more motivated than ever to have an housing element in place or miss out on tax credits. the goals of the new housing plan are multifaceted. to attract more business to the

city, to prevent san franciscans from moving out, and eight in climate change so more people can live closer to work. something important to point out in all of this is, let's say all of the plans go through, and it does become easier to build in the city. the san francisco planning director told me there will be hurdles to overcome such as finding developers and builders to take on the projects. larry: oakland opened new sheds near the site of the wood street encampment which is being disbanded. the city because at the wood street community cabins. the goal is to put 70 sheds in this spot, enough to house 100 people with former encampment residents given priority. the site includes committal restrooms, showers, laundry facilities and a kitchen. the site is being developed through a grant from the state. kristen: contra costa animal services is asking and one who wants a pet to consider adopting or fostering.
