tv   ABC7 News 900PM  ABC  February 7, 2023 9:00pm-10:00pm PST

9:00 pm
>> building a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions, this is abc 7 news. >> we are the united dates of america, and there's nothing, nothing beyond our capacity if we do it together. >> a fiery president wraps up his state of the union address in which he took aim at the economy, international relations, and bipartisan politics. dan: thank you for joining us for special edition of abc 7 news. it is midnight in washington, and a short time ago president biden addressed a joint session of congress to update the country on the state of the union. >> my fellow americans, we meet tonight at an inflection point. one of those moments that only a
9:01 pm
few generations ever face, going to decide the course of this nation for decades to come. we are not bystanders to history. we are not powerless before the forces that confront us. it is within our power, of we, the people. ama: we have team coverage tonight to get a local perspective on what the president said. will be joined by retired congress member as well as assembly member james gallagher. dan: first, let's go t the newsroom within overall look at the president's message tonight. >> finished the job, that's the line we had our over and over again from the president tonight, calling on both parties to come together as americans to help push his agenda forward. the president touched on a wide variety of subjects, even some
9:02 pm
bay area topics. the time has come to reign in these massive corporations with new regulations. >> legislation, to stop big tech from collecting personal data on our kids. >> pelosi's husband. >> violence at the home of the vent speaker the house. using the same language the insurrectionists used as they stocked these halls enchanted on
9:03 pm
january 6 here tonight in this paper is a man who bears the scars of that brutal attack. >> on a nationalthent wa about reemphasizing his accomplishments during his first two years in office. he highlighted the jobs created as well as the low unemployment rate, the lowest since 1969. he also touted some of his legislative accomplishments, mentioning by name the chips act, his bipartisan info structure bill and is inflation reduction act. he also warned against the dangers of not raising the country's debt ceiling and urged republicans to join democrats in doing so immediately. another big topic discussed tonight was abortion and the overturning of roe v. wade. among other things, the president warning republicans not to pass a national abortion ban, saying he would veto it if it ever came to his desk. dan: he certainly covered a wide range of topics, but there was
9:04 pm
considerable pushback during a number of points in his speech. >> he did receive pushback a few times. at one point several republican members shouted back at him about the crisis at the border. the biggest one came that -- when the president said that several gop members wanted to cut programs like social security and medicare. >> joining us now retired congress member jackie spear. >> state of the union address is in the chamber. i wonder what is it like in the chamber, tell us something about president biden and your experience with him. >> it's very much a gathering of all the powers that be in the d.c. area. it's sort of like our super bowl , but there are many fewer
9:05 pm
viewers. everyone to try and president if he is not of your party in some way, or to promote the president. ama: he seemed very in his element tonight, very comfortable. let's talk about what it was like there tonight, there was a bit of a theme, the president leaning into his economic issues, particularly infrastructure and jobs. >> he had a job to do tonight. he had to dispel among them are cats the concern they had about his age. he was very vivacious, energetic, and very much at home and comfortable with what he was talking about. so he gets high marks for that. dan: and it was a long speech, he kept his energy up. >> he had to also convey to the
9:06 pm
independents in the country that he really has accomplished something. being specific was really important and i think he hit the mark there. dan: we showed a picture of you there from a few years ago with the president. >> we were talking about military sexual assault and he was very committed as i was to fixing that. dan: he also talked a lot about the power of the american economy and workforce in creating more jobs in america. >> the facts speak for themselves. 12 million more jobs were created in two years, over 800,000 manufacturing jobs. i think we lose side of the fact how important making chips in the united states again is, because it is just essential to everything, whether it is our cars or our phones. making them here is going to
9:07 pm
make is not dependent on taiwan or anywhere else. ama: it felt at times as though the president was talking directly to republicans, but does it go anywhere from here? >> he also was talking to the american people. he was being very specific about what he has done for them, and also i think showed a great deal of humanity. that is his greatest strength, in my view. he has been through so much in his life, and as he introduced people in the balcony, you could appreciate, whether it was cancer or veterans, he was very -- he felt their pain because he had experienced it himself. dan: there's a lot of warm interaction, even with republicans there were some gracious moments, but there were also some boos and some
9:08 pm
pushback. in a way the president seemed to sort of relish that and lean into it. there was a point suggested republicans wanted to sunset social security and medicare. take a listen to this soundbite and the reaction. >> some republicans want medicare and social security to sunset. on not saying it's a majority. anybody who doubts my office, i will give you a copy of the proposal. dan: i felt like it was the british parliament there. [laughter] >> it was our attempt, but we are not very good at that. i would say that in the end, the way he turned that around, saying can we all stand for seniors and make sure we are not going to cut medicare and social security. and everyone stood, so that was
9:09 pm
a good sign. ama: he also hit on prescription drugs and talked about insulin. it kind of felt like a rallying point for him. >> it should be a rallying point for all of us. one in 10 people in this country is diabetic. right now only seniors are benefiting from the law last year that caps their actual insulin costs at $35 a month. everyone else is spending hundreds of dollars. diabetic patients now share their vials because they cannot afford to buy it. it is shameful, and we really have to change that. dan: he also talked about social media companies and the power and control they exert. anything you -- any chains you think will actually come from that? >> you saw democrats and republicans, mccarthy along with the vice president. there's a sense in congress among republicans that tech is all about democrats. so they want to kind of go after
9:10 pm
tech. but we all want to go after any tech company that is using personal, identifiable information of children and marketing to them. that should be an easy one for congress. dan: congress member and new abc7 political analyst, glad to have you on board. ama: newly elected sarah huckabee sanders delivered the republican response. she is the first female governor in arkansas history and currently the youngest governor in america. governor huckabee sanders said she didn't believe much of anything she heard from president biden tonight. >> and the radical left america, washington tax issue and lights your hard earned money on fire, but you get crushed with high gas prices, empty grocery shelves, and our children are taught to hate one another on account of their race, but not
9:11 pm
to love one another, or our great country. whether joe biden believes this madness or is simply too weak to resist it, his administration has been completely hijacked by the radical left. the dividing line in america is no longer between right or left. the choice is between normal or crazy. ama: california closely watching president biden speech tonight. dan: we want to bring in state assembly member james gallagher who needs the california assembly republican caucus. it seems like the president's comments on the economy got maybe the most animated reaction. would you say that is the greatest partisan divide right now over the economy? >> thank you for having me tonight. i think the issue is, despite all the rosy economic numbers that the president likes to site, most americans are
9:12 pm
struggling with jobs that don't pay enough to cover the high cost of living in the state, and we are also dealing with high crime. that is especially bad here in california. i talked to people all the time dealing with credit card debt, it gets harder and harder to afford groceries, utilities, gas costs, and all of that is something the president really ignored tonight and is something that needs a lot more attention. ama: certainly the working class is struggling mightily right now. the president seemed to try to appeal to blue-collar workers that he is doing the job they hired him to do. what is your response to that? >> i think a lot of people just don't see it in their everyday lives. like i said, inflation is at an all-time historic high. for blue-collar are reported as being good, but again, those jobs are not covering those high costs. i think they see this is really
9:13 pm
a failure when it comes to lowering people's costs in dealing with the affordability crisis that we have in california. dan: there were also some moments, contingents moments when the president said some republicans want to sunset medicare and social security, some stood up and shouted no. marjorie taylor greene as we said even shouted. your response to the president's comments, any truth to the notion that republicans want to sunset medicare and social security? >> there is no truth to it, and honestly i think that was fear mongering. speaker mccarthy has made it clear that medicare and social security are off the table. there is no real effort to cut those programs. we want to protect those programs. what we want to do with this out-of-control spending and high taxes, and dealing with those issues that are really affecting the everyday californian and everyday american. those are legitimate criticisms
9:14 pm
that i think the governor -- the president and the governor are trying to ignore once again, instead of dealing with those very pressing issues. it is not appropriate to interrupt the president, i didn't think that was right. you can disagree on policy, but certainly we should respect the office. ama: absolutely. let's talk about the counter messaging from republicans. what is the gop about right now? >> gop is about costs and dealing with the affordability crisis we have in the state and in this nation. it's dealing with a high crime we are seeing, homicides are up 41% in california. violent crimes are up. obviously rampant retail theft, we have seen all around our state. we have to deal with the out-of-control crime situation. a lot of it relates to policy. really lenient, less tough on crime policies that have been passed here in california that
9:15 pm
we are dealing with. and those are trying to make national now. so we are dealing with these really tough issues, the high cost of living, the homeless situation is out of control and growing exponentially in california, despite billions being spent. better way to get back to the fundamental cost of building infrastructure, water storage that is desperately needed, and the problems facing everyday californians and americans. dan: looking ahead to number of republicans are already coming forward expressing an interest in announcing candidacies. will the party in your judgment stand with former president donald trump, or will they move away from him, and as a secondary question, if they move away from him, will that help or hurt the party? >> well, that's when we have primaries.
9:16 pm
we are going to have a presidential primary and choose our republican candidate. that is up to the voters as we go through those primaries. i'm confident we will put someone up who is going to cast a far better vision for the country than joe biden has. quite frankly, his record has not been very good. i think everyday american see that and they know what the truth is, and they are looking for a better way forward. ama: james gallagher, thank you so much for joining us tonight with the republican outlook. dan: vice president harris will be on gma tomorrow morning. it airs at 7:00 a.m. right here after abc7 morning news. ama: we will be right back with more coverage of the state of the union, including a tense moment

dan: the founder of bay farmworker abbasid group attended the state of the union address tonight, hours before a meeting and tweeting this photo along with the words, she is an inspiration and it was an honor to meet her today. in the wake of the mass shooting and half moon bay, he has helped farmworkers deal with the trauma. it was his message of help that the founder hoped to take to the president. >> the main messages to really focus in on our farm working community, that we don't leave them behind again, that we continue to highlight the narrative of human rights for farmworkers, that we need to continue to honor them for all

conference tuesday morning, the san francisco mayor addressed the city's aggressive plan to build 82,000 new housing units in the next eight years. >> part of the conversation and part of my plan is going to center around making changes that might make some people a little bit uncomfortable, increasing density, increasing height, making changes to our transit corridor's to provide opportunities to build more in those areas. >> the planning director says the city currently bills 3000 market rate and affordable housing units a year but believes the mayors newly certified housing element plan to increase that number to 10,000 a year is attainable. he tells me the goal is to cut through red tape and fasttrack zoning or primarily commercial areas of western and northern neighborhoods. with the vacancy rate downtown hitting 27%, some of those empty offices could be converted to residential units.
9:40 pm
in the francisco and alameda have outlined detailed plans of how to increase housing numbers. mayor breed's office adds cities are more motivated than ever to have a housing element in place or risk to sing out on state funding and tax credits. the goals are multifaceted, to attract more businesses to the city, prevent san franciscans from moving out, and aid in climate change so more people can live closer to work. something important to point out in all of this is, if all the plans go through and it does become easier to build in the city, the san francisco planning director told me there will still be hurdles to overcome such as finding developers and builders to take on those projects. ama: while some five for housing, others just want to sit. last week we told you about one san francisco neighborhood fighting the city to stop them from removing sidewalk benches.
