republicans, some republicans, want medicare and social security to sunset. i'm not saying it's a majority. [ applause ] once and for all. >> reporter: looking ahead, the president with a message of hope. >> because the soul of this nation is strong, because the backbone of this nation is strong, because the people of this nation are strong, the state of the union is strong. >> reporter: and while the white house insists that this speech was not a trial run for the upcoming 2024 campaign, i have to tell you it certainly felt like that, like he was laying the groundwork and biden's delivery and command may go far to quell some of the concern even from his own party about a re-election run. now, starting today the president is taking this message on the road, this week visiting two states critical to the next election. george? >> mary bruce, thanks. let's get more on this from our chief congressional correspondent rachel scott, chief washington correspondent jon karl and, rachel, let me begin with you. i've never seen a chamber like that. >> reporter: yeah, george, and you said it yourself, it was a rowdy house chamber. at times extremely contentious. i was sitting inside the chamber watching this all unfold as republican members of congress heckled the president of the united states. house speaker kevin mccarthy warned his conference earlier in the day that the mics are hot, that the cameras are rolling. he wanted this to be civil and respectful. he told reporters after that

closed-door meeting that his party would not be engaging in any childish games, but, of curse, that all served as a very stark contrast to what we saw play out inside that house chamber. >> jon, the president had a balancing act last night, pleading for bipartisanship but showing he has a lot of fight in it. did he do what he needed to do? >> reporter: i really think he did. look, this was a highly unusual state of the union address. but this is one of the best speeches that joe biden has me up there and evse h attackone was doing it with a smile, not the name-calling he's done in the past. there was no talk of maga, you know, extremists, ultra-maga republicans and the reaction to -- from the republicans. at least the back bench republicans who were heckling him and jeering him played exactly into his message, they made the contrast. he was able to for a moment anyway, george, portray the

republican opposition as a bunch of angry hecklers, people that were bitter and rude. you could see kevin mccarthy obviously didn't like the image. he was literally shushing republicans in the chamber. >> jon, the official republican response, a familiar face from the trump era. >> reporter: yeah, sarah sanders literally going to trump's old spokesperson. her message was very much in keeping with trumpism, it was harshly negative. almost american carnage we saw from trump in his inaugural address. one interesting thing, sarah huckabee sanders may have invoked trump but she never once mentioned his name in that speech. >> rachel, an unusual and remarkable moment for george santos right before the speech. >> reporter: unusual, it was. congressman george santos, who is accused of fabricating almost every single detail of his life, positioned himself along the aisle to cross paths with members of congress entering as

well as the president. then you had senator mitt romney go up to him and say to his face that he does not belong here, saying that he should be embarrassed. senator romney told reporters afterwards that he was surprised to see santos along the aisle saying that considering all the investigations that he is facing that he should have been in the back and should have been remaining quiet instead of parading in front of the president of the united states asking if he had any shame. george? >> rachel scott, jon karl, thanks have much. robin? >> it was quite a scene. now to the race against time and the efforts to find survivors after that catastrophic earthquake devastated turkey and syria. the death toll is still climbing, now topping 11,000. marcus moore is live again on the scene in turkey with the very latest including the stories of some miraculous rescues. good morning, marcus. >> reporter: robin, good morning. we have been witnessing an urgent effort this morning here in gaziantep to find people who may be trapped in the rubble.

you can see the rescuers in the distance behind us. they say they know an 11-year-old boy is there and that three times this morning they have heard a voice or voices coming from the rubble, e onny to try to save ve mornga c clock to find survivors in the rubble. reamily from the debris. the crowd erupting in joy and relief and this infant found by residents who heard her cries 40 hours after the earthquake. her mother tragically passing, but first giving birth while buried under the rubble of a five-story apartment building. the baby now doing well and in the hospital. and rescuers giving water to this toddler, a syrian refugee, now safe after being trapped for nearly 45 hours. miraculous moments as the death toll from the catastrophic earthquake that hit syria and turkey now tops 11,000 and the

world health organization estimating the toll could reach nearly 20,000. this young girl welcomed out of the rubble to applause after being trapped for over 45 hours in turkey. her relatives overcome with relief, kissing her as she's carried to an ambulance. in turkey alone more than 8,000 people have been rescued. in gaziantep, near the syrian border, we met families who for days have been waiting for news of their loved ones as searchers dig through debris nearby. this woman told us her cousin is buding. o ld. >> it's so cold. it's so difficult, so difficult. >> reporter: like so many, they too are hoping for a miracle. a critical window for survival is narrowing with potentially thousands more trapped. president erdogan saying 70 countries from around the globe are offering aid including two usaid teams of elite rescue

workers en route with roughly 170,000 pounds of specialized tools and equipment. we met this woman bringing soup and water to rescue crews. >> we want to help people, everybody. >> reporter: while sending aid to war-torn syria proving to be more of a challenge, this drone video showing a horrific scene there. multiple high-rise buildings reduced to rubble. entire neighborhoods ripped to pieces. so we have watched the efforts here in the urban areas continue to unfold but the united nations says many roads that lead to rural areas were destroyed and that has impacted the rescue operations there as well as making it difficult to get aid to those affected areas. rebecca? >> such a tragedy and we are praying for those miracles. marcus moore, thanks for being on the scene for us throughout this story. we turn now to the frightening fire on board a united airlines jet. the plane was forced to turn af thanks to quick action of the flight crew. our transportation correspondent gio benitez is at newark airport

where that plane was headed. good morning, gio. >> reporter: hey, rebecca, good morning to you. yeah, that plane turned right back around to san diego when the fire started and that quick-thinking crew went right to work saving so many lives. this morning, the faa investigating after a fire broke out on a newark-bound united flight leaving san diego. >> all of a sudden there was some smoke. the guy next to me, two seats over started to scream and then i saw a flash of fire. >> reporter: air traffic control telling the plane to turn around, but struggling to hear the pilots. >> at 2664 i understand you might be on masks there. i cannot hear you. suggest you turn north and you are cleared for the visual to san diego at any time. >> reporter: united telling abc news it was a battery brick that burst into flames. crew members immediately put it inside a thermal containment bag

like this one designed to contain a small battery fire and put it out. in 2022 alone the faa says there were 57 incidents like this one on a plane. thankfully it landed safely back in san diego. >> the fire is out and it's in the lav and we just need to check on the thermal condition of the brakes so we can maybe roll off and get over to the gate. >> reporter: and many u.s. airlines now have those containment bags on board. that's why it's so important to carry on your devices and batteries, never put them in your checked luggage. george? >> absolutely not. okay, gio, thanks very much. the latest now on the recovery effort of the chinese spy balloon. we're seeing new images as the coast guard says the operation will take several days. chief justice correspondent pierre thomas is tracking the effort. good morning, pierre. >> reporter: george, good morning. we have new images of the u.s. navy pulling out what's left of china's spy moon from the atlantic ocean. the navy has pinpointed the

location of the balloon's huge technology bay which is the size of three buses. authorities are increasingly confident they will be able to exploit a potential intelligence bonanza. recovered pieces are being sent to the fbi lab in quantico, virginia, and we're learning new details about the massive surveillance device. a senior official telling abc news the balloon had a self-destruct capability, possibly containing explosives. china meanwhile is furious. defense secretary austin.s from- robin? >> pierre, thank you. quite a recovery effort going on there. we're going to turn now to that breaking basketball news overnight. the king has been crowned. lebron james stands alone as nba's all-time scoring leader. matt gutman was in the arena when it happened and joins us now from los angeles. good morning, matt. you didn't have to pay because that was some heavy price for tickets to that game, matt. >> reporter: it was like $1,250. no, we did not have to pay and inside, you know, it was an unimportant game and a forgettable season, but there

was the electric feel of a championship game. every time lebron touched the ball the crowd roared and the 38-year-old scoring 38 points in just three quarters to clinch one of the most hallowed records in all of sports. >> lebron james, a shot at history. >> reporter: overnight that fadeaway jump shot. the roar of the fans. lebron james sailing across the court, arms in a "v," notching the all-time nba scoring record and cementing his status as perhaps the greatest ever. >> i would never, ever in a million years dreamt this, it's even better than. thank you, guys. >> reporter: lebron putting his hands on his knees taking it all in moments later getting the game ball from another laker great, kareem abdul-jabbar, whose record he overtook. >> lebron james for three. >> reporter: lebron started the contest 35 points behind abdul-jabbar's once-seemingly unassailable points but from the

the president also facing a skeptical public. a majority don't think they're better off since he took office and a majority don't approve of the job he's doing. >> well, listen, there's no question -- and, again, the president spoke about this and it's on his mind every day. people are still hurting in america. as he started his presentation last night, talking about the fact that we've come out of an historic pandemic, the economic crisis that resulted, supply chain crisis that resulted. you look at the cost of milk and eggs. it's about $4.25 i think on average in the country. so, yeah, people are still hurting and we still have work to do. i think the president was clear that the job is not done. we brought down the cost of insulin for seniors to $35 a month. we're bringing down the cost of medication on an annual basis for seniors so that they'll be capped at about $2,000 a year and we're dealing with what we need to do to bring down the cost of energy in terms of rebates. so a lot of good work has

happened but more work needs to be done. >> the president did not make a specific reference last night to that chinese spy balloon. can the confrontation with china be contained? >> you know, the president met with xi jinping in bali and then actually weeks later i had a brief meeting with him in bangkok. we have been very clear with -- directly with the chinese leaders and with our own allies and partners around the world. we invite competition with china, but we do not seek conflict. we do not seek confrontation. what the president did most recently in terms of that balloon is consistent with our perspective and commitment, which is we are prepared to compete. but at the same time if there's any violation of our sovereignty we're going to act and that is what the president did decisively. >> the official republican response from governor sanders of arkansas said the choice before america right now is the choice between normal and crazy. your reaction?

she's 40. president biden just turned 80. looks like he's gearing up for re-election, but a majority of americans -- a majority of democrats, according to our new poll, say they don't want president biden to run again. what do you say to them? >> i mean, george, i think that age is more than a chronological fact to be very frank with you. it's about thinking about whether we have in our leader, which we do in joe biden, somebody who is bold. i mean, think about it. what he has achieved in this presidency only two years in is historic in terms of the investment in infrastructure. we're going to remove lead from the pipes of america within the next nine years. children for generations and their families have been suffering because of the poisoning, lead poisoning. we're going to lay and make sure that people have broadband across our country where we saw families that were driving up to the mcdonald's to have access to the public wi-fi and what that did in terms of creating educational gaps for people who

on thursday, february 16th. the docu-series "stolen youth" launches tomorrow on hulu. robin? now to our series "the science of you," a the technologies in smartphones that track your health and wellness, some of which you probably didn't even know about. so becky is here with details on all of that helpful information. i'm so excited about this segment. >> our phones and wearables have incredible sensors in them. you just need to dig in a little to find a treasure trove of useful info. you know that your phone tracks how many steps you take walking each day. but did you know it's also analyzing the way you're walking? using a sensor called an accelerometer and the gyroscope which measures your rotation, your phone records the profile of your walk.

>> using that information, your iphone can tell you whether or not you're at risk of taking a hard fall. >> reporter: if you have an apple watch, the data you can access goes way, way up. heart rate, blood oxygen level and respiratory rate are logged. while these aren't medical devices to be used if you're sick, they can help you see trends especially for tracking fitness. it can monitor your sleep, telling you about your rem, and light sleep cycles. all this is great but what about privacy? >> let's talk privacy. >> apple cannot read or access that data. it is in your control. something we obviously take very seriously. >> reporter: wearables from other companies offer similar but not exactly the same metrics. in the samsung watch there's no walking stability metric but it does estimate your body fat percentage and on the privacy front -- >> the help data for samsung devices and google devices are encrypted. so it's not possible to actually get access to this information unless you actually are the user yourself.

>> reporter: so how do you find this data? well, open up your phone. you will go to health and then you're going to browse along the bottom. you see there's summary, sharing and browse. it has all of these features that you can access. let's kick into mobility and we'll go down to something like that double support time. are you shuffling? walking asymmetry? this tells if you're limping. i can see i'm pretty equal on both legs, but if i go back i can see in april of 2021 i injured my knee and i was limping. it shows that i had asymmetry. you can use this, robin, maybe to talk to a parent too like, dad, i see you limping, maybe you should talk to your doctor about it. let's look in your phone. >> there's more data we are just not -- we don't know it's there. >> it's all over the place. like let's talk about some of the data from your wearables. so if you're wearing an apple watch or an oura ring, you can look at your heart rate

variability or your cardio fitness. i might say, okay, i'm looking pretty fit right now but if i go back to when i had that injury, i dipped and this is how you can see are your workouts working for you. is your cardio max increasing? >> i worked with my physical therapist yesterday and really wasn't feeling that well, jet lagged from the trip. it was great, but it really was taxing, the flight and all that. he went and talked about my hrv. i had no idea but he went into my data because i wear the oura ring and modified my workout and made such a huge difference. >> it's in your phone and you can use it to determine, is it today a day when i go hard at the gym or a day when i rest and recover? >> what if some are like that's it's a little too much info. >> there is a lot of info there. you can delete it all. just go into settings and privacy and you can get rid of it all. >> i love this series. >> aw, i'm glad you're using it. >> i know. it really helped. thank you, becky. rebecca? >> a lot of great information there. well, with food prices
