b cs white house correspondent mary alice parks in d. c very alice. good morning again to you what we know so far. good morning. the searches on we know that military planes and helicopters have been deployed to what is an icy arctic debris field off of the northeastern edge of alaska. they're hoping to get more answered about this answers about this unidentified objects. soon the white house telling us that this new object was first detected thursday evening, fighter jets were sent up at least twice to check it out. those pilots and u. s intelligence were able to determine that the object was unmanned. president biden was briefed thursday and then gave that order to shoot it down friday morning, an f 22 fighter took the shot at 1 45 yesterday afternoon. and us officials, though admitting to us that that order to shoot it down came before they knew much about this object like where it was from, or who owned it or what it was even capable of. we're told this object was roughly the size of a

car so much smaller than that suspected chinese by balloon that flew across the country last week and that this object was flying much lower at only about 40,000 ft. and then because of that, it could have been a threat. two civilian aircraft and that the white house says that was a big part of the president's decision to shoot it down. even definitely alarming. mary alice. thanks you are overseas now to the urgent race against time in turkey and syria. the search for survivors in the wake of that devastating earthquake now complicated by aftershocks, the death toll now surpassing 24,000. but we are still seeing miraculous survival stories. the 16 trapped by pounds of rubble for 108 hours. he's then carried away and taken

interfere with normal life presenting with symptoms in mood, behavior and early onset dementia later on in life and this study found the rates of cte were likely significantly higher among professional football players compared to the general population. >> and so you just said that it's higher than the general population. one thing about ctes, dr. sutton, i'm so mystified about, the idea they can only be diagnosed after death. what kind of challenge does that present in trying to study them obviously? >> it's an incredible challenge. and that's why we advocate for the advancement of research and making sure we diversify research and know that black americans in general are 1.5 to 2 times more likely to develop alzheimer's and other related forms of dementia and being a professional athlete does not exempt you from that risk. so it's furthering the importance of identifying these signs of thought changes, mood changes and behavioral changes to get early treatment and intervention and hopefully improve the treatment of those

this is archie. okay. but today we're talking about carol briggs and after life dealt a heavy loss, the grandmother wasn't sure what her life would look like. love at first sight. this valentine's day will be a little different for came briggs. >> i had lost my husband of 54 years just past a year ago and i changed departments. >> reporter: the grandmother from albuquerque, new mexico, turning to an unlikely source to help heal a broken heart. >> i saw treetop and her little cage there. and she looked at me and i looked at her and i said, you know, i think this might be the one. >> reporter: a kitten from her local humane society that she would name treetop. >> that was my husband's log-in on his computer. so i said if i ever get another animal i was going to name it treetop in his memory. >> reporter: it took time for carol and treetop to click but now the duo is inseparable. the relationship that you had with your husband, that's not a void that can ever be filled. >> correct. >> how has treetop changed your life following a loss like that? >> she just brings joy, and follows me wherever i can go.
