>> yes. and history will be made tonight when patrick mahomes and jalen hurts take the field as the first black quarterbacks to face each other in the super bowl. >> so exciting. and rihanna stepping onto the world's biggest stage. more than 100 million watching as she makes her first live performance since 2018 at the grammys. we are live at the super bowl all morning long. >> unbelievable it has been that long since we have seen her perform. but we do begin this morning with yet another unidentified object shot out of the skies. a u.s. fighter jet working with north american aerospace defense command to shoot down an object over canada saturday. >> it comes just one day after the u.s. took out a different object over alaska. white house correspondent maryalice parks is live on the north lawn with the latest. maryalice, good morning. >> reporter: whit, good morning. three times in one week u.s. fighter jets have shot objects out of the sky, and with these last two over canada and alaska, the white house still unable to confirm what they were or where they were from.

overnight, another unidentified object shot down over the yukon in canada just a day after a u.s. fighter jet shot down an object off the northern edge of alaska. these back-to-back mysterious objects raising urgent questions about who owns these aircraft and where they could be from. the object over canada first detected friday night. canadian and u.s. planes scrambling to scope it out. president biden speaking to canadian prime minister justin trudeau, giving the green light for a u.s. f-22 fighter to take the shot. canadian officials saying the small, cylindrical object was flying at approximately 40,000 feet. trudeau thanking the longstanding partnership that monitors the sky and sea. trudeau writing, thank you, norad for keeping the watch over north america. >> they don't want to be caught off guard having a balloon float through sovereign air space when they didn't know about it. it may be shoot first, ask questions later. >> reporter: a joint recovery effort now under way. the u.s. military and fbi already working in tough, arctic

conditions off the remote coast of alaska to try to recover and learn more about that other unidentified object brought down friday. snow, wind, and little daylight making that operation extremely tough. these latest instances coming less than a week after that chinese spy balloon was shot down in the atlantic. the white house seemingly much quicker to act this week, citing the fact that the object brought down near alaska was flying much lower and potentially a threat to civilian aircraft. alaska senator lisa murkowski who had blasted the administration for waiting to down that chinese spy balloon that flew near her state, now praising the biden team. >> i think the message was very important today to say, any aspect of u.s. sovereign territory that is encroached upon, there's going to be consequences to it. >> reporter: and last night we also got word of a false alarm. there was a temporary flight restriction over montana after norad said it detected a radar

anomaly. they sent up planes to scope it out and saw nothing. clearly a sign that everyone is on edge, trying to figure out what's going on in the sky. whit? >> maryalice, thank you. joining us now is mick mulroy, abc news national security and defense analyst and former deputy assistant secretary of defense for the middle east. good morning. it's great to have you. now that we have had multiple flying objects shot down by american fighter jets, the administration says china is behind at least one of them, but could there be others? which countries are the likely suspects here? >> so what it looks like this program has been going on for several years, and i think now that we have collected the information off the balloon that traveled across the united states, we have the ability, the signature if you will, to see these types of balloons and now we can look back and find, we believe tat these balloon programs have traveled over 40 countries, five continents. it's very extensive, and that same signature has given us the ability to find these balloons

or these objects i should say, and shoot them down further away from the continental united states. >> but what about other countries? i mean, are they all -- is china behind all of them, or could countries like russia be involved? >> so i do think several countries use these balloon-type systems to supplement their satellite systems, of course, and some countries, of course, can't afford those satellites. it is used by many. we don't know that this is china. we should certainly wait for the facts to lead to conclusions because it will further rupture the relationship with the united states and china if it is. it could also be russia. russia may want to drive that wedge. they may be releasing these balloons. we need to determine who we think did this before taking any kind of actions, whether they be military or diplomatic. >> how worried should americans be about this? >> well, i think they should be pretty worried.

i mean, this -- if it is china and it's not some kind of incompetence, and i don't think it is, it would indicate to me that they're trying to probe the united states using different sized balloons and configurations potentially to make it more difficult to detect. and these surveillance balloons, if that's what this is, they can collect both signals intelligence and imagery. they can get right over our most sensitive installations just like the one where i am in montana, our intercontinental ballistic missile silos. obviously very significant. americans in general should be worried about this, and really wondering, if it is china, why they're doing it. >> something to watch very closely in thecoming days. mick mulroy, thank you so much for your time this morning. we do appreciate it. and tune into "this week" later this morning. george stephanopoulos has sunday exclusives with senate majority leader chuck schumer laying out his party's agenda for the next two years, and oversight committee chairman congressman james comer as house republicans begin their investigation into president biden and his family. eva? now the earthquake devastating turkey and syria.

the death toll now surpassing 28,000. marcus moore is live in turkey with the race against time to find survivors. good morning, marcus. >> reporter: eva, good morning. we are at the site of one of the buildings that collapsed here in gaziantep, turkey, and for days, we watched rescuers desperately sifting through this rubble trying to free people from beneath the debris, and the searches continue across the region this morning, but hope in finding more survivors is fading. this morning, the desperate search for survivors as a critical window to find people alive narrows and the death toll tops 28,000. the u.n. warning that number could double. >> i think it's really difficult to estimate, and that's -- that's terrifying. >> reporter: this dramatic drone footage capturing the scale of the destruction in turkey. u.s. military aircraft and supplies now arriving to aid in

the response as members of usaid use dogs to scour more than 630 sites across the city, determined to find life buried deep within the debris. >> it's still possible, but it seems like these rescues are happening fewer and fewer. >> yeah. it's many days beyond now. so now it's really an attempt. the climate's pretty rough here, and the type of collapse and structures that are down on them are -- make it very difficult for them. >> reporter: but, as hope fades, still miraculous stories of survival as rescuers work tirelessly, cutting through collapsed buildings. in hatay, turkey, a 2-month-old baby pulled from the rubble of a decimated building. onlookers applauding. nearby a 7-year-old boy pulled from the earth after 136 hours. first responders working desperately to save his life. this video from the 138th hour filmed by the istanbul rescue teams showing the harrowing

rescue of a mother and son. and incredibly, 147 hours after the quake this 10-year-old girl now free. these glimmers of hope amidst the devastation as first responders from around the globe descend on the quake zone, braving aftershocks, freezing cold temperatures and dangerous conditions. here you see rubble and debris collapsing on rescue, workers as they scramble to find survivors, and here a family of five saved from the wreckage and mounds of debris. rescue workers passing them along a human chain to safety. and as the search goes on, arrests. this property developer taken into custody authorizes say as he tried to leave the country. turkish prosecutors ordering the detention of more than 100 people involved in the construction of buildings that collapsed. and in syria, there have been massive challenges with access. in hard-hit aleppo, rescuers using excavators searching through rubble, still hoping to find anyone alive. the anguish taking its toll. >> reporter: the earthquake was light, and then the building suddenly collapsed. everyone died, and i don't remember anything. i don't even remember the days or the hours. and back to the effort to hold people accountable for the destruction we have seen here in turkey, that one developer who was arrested at the airport, he said that his trip out of the country had nothing to do with this disaster, but janai, people we've met here, they want justice, and one of the young men who we met who was pulled out of this rubble, he said that with his second chance at life, he wants to see to it that disasters like this don't happen again. janai? >> incredible reporting there, marcus. and the miracles, that 10-year-old girl after 147 hours, hoping for many more of those. marcus, thank you so much. staying overseas now, but turning now to the latest russian offensive in the war against ukraine, the russians claiming massive success as they step up their winter assault on key cities in the eastern part of the country.

tom soufi burridge is live in lviv, ukraine with more. tom, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, janai. russia escalating its offensive in eastern ukraine, and the uk ministry of defense saying it's likely the last two weeks have been the deadliest for russian forces since the early days of the war. this video claiming it shows a column of destroyed russian tanks. it's noteworthy that prominent russian military bloggers have admitted there was a failed russian advance in that area in the past few days, but western officials saying russia is making tactical gains in certain points of the front line. one of ukraine's most senior commanders telling me this is now the toughest phase of the war for ukraine. lieutenant general sergei nayev saying russia now has 350,000 troops mobilized and ready to fight in this war. when russia invaded, that figure was 160,000 russian troops. u.s. and nato are due to meet in brussels on tuesday to discuss more military support for ukraine.

two key issues -- whether to supply western-made fighter jets and longer range missiles. and in just over a week, president biden expected in poland to mark the one-year anniversary of this war. whit? >> they have been asking for those fighter jets for some time. tom, thank you. now to the latest health scare threatening to sweep across the country. outbreaks of norovirus now on the rise at two schools. elwyn lopez joins us now with more, including ways to protect yourself. elwyn, good morning. >> reporter: hey, whit, good morning. norovirus cases continue to spread across the country at higher levels than we typically see for this time of year. take a look at this. the cdc says more than 15% of lab tests are coming back positive. the last time it was that high was last march, but parts of the midwest taking the brunt reporting a positivity rate of more than 19%. in michigan, an outbreak shutting down a preschool in livonia right outside of detroit. officials there rushing to disinfect and clean the

facilities before reopening on tuesday, and in las vegas another suspected outbreak. this one at an elementary school. more than 70 people got sick so far. two have been confirmed as norovirus. so far 225 outbreaks have been reported in the past five months compared to 172 during the same time last year. now the most common symptoms of that form of food poisoning are nausea, vomiting, and stomach pain, and guys, experts are urging people to continue to wash their hands as well as any veggies and fruits that you're going to consume. if you feel sick, isolate until about 48 hours after you start feeling better. eva? >> i ordered more sanitizing wipes. elwyn lopez, thank you for that report. turning now to new mexico state university shutting down its men's basketball program midseason due to alleged hazing. abc's zohreen shah has the story. good morning, zohreen. >> reporter: hey, good morning. this has left many people in total shock. it is virtually unheard of for a

division i basketball team to be suspended mid season. the new mexico state men's team was abruptly suspended on friday, and it is just weeks before the ncaa's march madness tournament is set to start. okay. so here's how it unfolded. the school's chancellor says players on the men's basketball team were interviewed by the school yesterday about an alleged hazing incident. the chancellor said he was heartbroken and sickened to hear about these hazing allegations. his statement comes just hours after the school announced it will hold a closed-door meeting this tuesday. and the school also placed their head coach and staff on administrative leave pending an investigation into an alleged violation of university policy. the aggies, as they're known, experienced other turmoil this season. in november, junior forward mike peake shot and killed a student in albuquerque. new mexico state police called it a self-defense case, and they claimed in court filings that a group of university of new mexico students allegedly conspired to lure the player on campus and assault him.

posting on social media they got tickets to this tour. >> i did too. two shows. we'll talk later. let's look at some of the other big stories we're following on this sunday morning. happening right now, the u.s. sending a dc-10 air tanker to help contain the deadly wildfires spreading across chile. authorities say at least 26 people have died, and more than 2,000 have been injured. thousands have been left homeless as the region goes through a heat wave with temperatures soaring upwards of 100 degrees fahrenheit. also right now, a california pipeline facility is delivering fuel again after its temporary closure triggered panic. long lines of drivers flocked to gas stations after the gas leak caused the pipeline that transports fuel from california to parts of nevada to shut down on thursday. officials say the amount and cause of the leak are still under investigation. tough news stories there, but this one will make you feel good. look at this little girl's reaction when she realized that none other than the lebron james sat next to her at saturday night's game. the lakers star didn't play

her family saw outside their front door for more than a year. >> i'm coming back. you wait and see. get out! it's my home. >> reporter: this morning, a st. louis woman is now facing charges after allegedly terrorizing a family. several incidents caught on doorbell video. >> american citizen angry at [ bleep ]. >> reporter: 54-year-old judy kline charged with first degree burglary, first degree property damage, and unlawful use of a weapon. this, coming more than a year after st. louis prosecutors say ring video shows kline smashing a hammer into the family's front door. just moments earlier, suarez, the homeowners' daughter, alleges kline broke into the family's back door and got into the house while her 4-year-old sister and dad were at home. >> judy held her hands up with the hammer and she was yelling, you're a bunch of illegals. a lot of emotions went through my body, like, she literally had the opportunity to kill my dad or my sister.

>> reporter: a local police department booking data report shows kline was arrested that day and charged with aggravated burglary and property damage, but that case was not pursued. >> it made me feel that we didn't matter at all to the justice system. >> reporter: suarez, whose family is of mexican descent, alleges kline then returned to their house multiple times, including last week, hurling racist comments at them and even going through their mail. >> get out. you're a bunch of illegals. you don't belong in america. did you have something to do with 9/11 [ bleep ]? >> reporter: in these encounters, kline didn't face any new charges. >> i would call the police every time. >> reporter: frustrated, suarez decided to post the ring videos on social media which recently went viral, sparking outrage and questions about why police weren't taking action. >> they took too long with the charges. i mean, just now, you know, that the video got viral, i was able to get answers. >> reporter: as of thursday, the

back now with more fallout this morning from that young teen girl in new jersey, dying by suicide after a video was posted online of fellow students beating her. abc's mona kosar abdi is here with that story. the school's superintendent has now resigned. >> reporter: that's right, janai. 14-year-old adriana kuch's father says the school fell short in protecting his daughter from the bullying that he says took place both in-person and then continued online. now more students are coming forward saying that this incident is only part of a pattern of abuse at the school. this morning, a bombshell resignation after 14-year-old adriana kuch took her own life two days after this video of her being beaten vent viral. the superintendent of that new jersey school district now resigning after a series of interviews he gave caught the school board's attention. releasing a statement saying they have, quote, accepted triantafillos parlapanides' resignation and are evaluating allcurrent and past cases of

bullying. >> i'm already recording. >> reporter: the video now part of an official investigation begins as one teen alerts the others that they are recording. >> they are just giggling while they walked down the hall because they knew what they were going to do. >> reporter: then adriana is hit in the face with a water bottle while her classmates laugh. she is kicked and punched repeatedly. her hair pulled as she's trying to get away. two students involved have been charged with conspiracy to commit aggravated assault. a third student charged with aggravated assault, and a fourth student charged with harassment. her father, michael, is outraged and says the school should have done more. >> they brushed it under the rug, and what shocked me is after all that happened, and after i sent all that stuff to the school, the principal tells me it's not their policy to expel students. >> reporter: but this is not the first bullying incident at central regional high school. abc news given this video by the family of a former student. olivia shown here being beaten
