>> not able to move. >> a new drug hitting the streets. in the fight against the fentanyl crisis, san francisco is now bracing for another battle. good evening and thank you for joining us. i am dion lim. you are watching abc seven news at 11:00. efforts are underway to stop the powerful tranquilizer from becoming a deadly street drug. tara campbell has been following the story and has information about the drug and how the city is exactly trying to prepare. tara: the drug is better known as tranq on the s more concerning is that it cannot be reversed by narcan. the medical examiner says they will start testing for the drug

this year, coming as a relief for folks with loved ones on the streets. jackie berlin holds a picture of her son, corey. he is battling addiction on the streets and she is worried about tranq. >> he said whatever was in the drugs he took made it so that he could not move his body. tara: veterinarians to sedate large animals and when mixed with already powerful opioids, it is deadly. >> i believe the drug is already on the street, unfortunately. tara: the dea warns the drug is showing up more and more out west. over a two month. -- over a two month there were more amounts of the drug being snuck into deadly opioids like fentanyl. >> i want to make sure that our city's monitoring for this and testing for it. tara:

it is important to start testing overdose victims for the drug this year. >> what we are doing given the crisis we are facing is life-saving, and we have to fight this. tara: and because it is not an opioid, and overdubs caused by this drug cannot be reversed by narcan, the nasal treatment relied on to save somebody lives. >> narcan is deployed thousands of times a year citywide. tara: making the crackdown of the drug even more important, says the supervisor. >> if narcan is not going to work, it is going to be terrifying. tara: as for jackie, she is following the medical examiner's move to test for tranq. >> what are public notices to those on the streets so they

exactly what sparked the flames. investigators are now searching for a hit and run driver who they say intentionally struck a woman in castro valley. this happened 7:30 last night in the parking lot of first presbyterian church. authorities say a man driving a nissan sentra they have initially brushed against a 77-year-old woman. this led to a shouting match between the two. the driver then turned the car around and purposely hit the woman, knocking her onto the hood of his car before she fell to the ground. the woman had to be taken to the hospital but she is expected to be ok. developing news. police are asking for help to locate a missing san leandro resident. antonio silva area is 67 years old and has been missing since saturday evening. he suffers from memory loss and diabetes and is in dire need of medication. >> if someone sees him, please let us know.

winter assault is gaining ground in ukraine. video shows russian soldiers gaining control of another ukrainian city. this is the most difficult phase of the war so far, one person saying russia has more than 350 soldiers who are mobilized to fight. the fierce tactics used by this and men who refused to fight were reportedly executed in front of other recruits. basketball season has come to an end and new mexico state university has alarming sex assault allegations. the men's program has been suspended for the rest of the season after a member of the team claimed he was assaulted by three of his teammates. the unnamed victim told police that this happened multiple times in front of the team with no defense from other players.

whether anchor spencer christian explains how clams of all things could help improve the local east coast system. spencer: these are young clams and even though the individual species are different, they have something important in common. their shells. at san francisco's pre wild ecologists are using nesting pods made up of ground-up oyster shells attract growing oysters. it is shoreline projects that may eventually help the broader ecosystem. >> we are anticipating more oysters coming in and those that settle to survive and grow. and hopefully reproduce on their own. spencer: meanwhile, a shor drive north, researchers from uc davis are also using ground-up shells, this time from clams. their goal is to combat the threat from global warming, a threat caused by pollution from fossil fuels picking the

seawater more acidic. >> the idea i am working on is that purposeful emission of shell material into sediments and interact with the seawater and actually buffer against the changes we are seeing due to the climate change. spencer: anna began collecting the shells near the uc davis green laboratory at bodega bay. and wanted to learn if acid-fr buffering components in the shells could keep habitats less acidic. >> we did see a buffering effect. in addition to the chemistry changing and data suggesting that was the case, we also saw with the clam growth that the clams grew more shells than those without it. spencer: she is hoping that mixing shells into the squishy breeding ground can help young clams their five and to develop a more balanced shoreline eare acidic. even if surrounding
