darren price was arrested and charged with manufacturing drugs, child endangerment and manslaughter. she maintains she had no idea how this could've happened. >> he told me that he was looking for a contractor and that's all i know. please keep it simple. i do not bother anyone. >> remarkably, despite being on fire and suffering burns to her head, torso and hands, which no longer can be used, please some managed to escape and attempted to save the wife who was sitting in the living room and perished in the explosion. >> and i ran out and went to go helped her and i was taken to the hospital. it wasn't until i asked the police if she survived and i learned that she did not survive. >> while lisa slowly tight community group has set up

lived with his wife and two kids for the past two years. neighbors say the man shown here is darren price. today we heard from the owner of 3rd street boxing gym where price used to work out. paul says it's been about two years since he last saw price. >> he said he would come in several times a week for an early warning class and would sometimes bring his son. >> it's definitely shocked, and now that i recognize who it is, it's even more of a shock because he didn't seem like that kind of individual that would be involved with drugs and stuff like that. >> we spoke with an attorney who represented price in a civil case nine years ago. back in 2014 they said price had filed a lawsuit for partial ownership of a marijuana dispensary in the city of richmond. >> he had a claim to ownership that he had invested in this business and so we filed a for the business and it didn't really go anywhere. >> he says he talked to price a

few times since then. according to him in the neighbor, his wife suffered a stroke and was disabled. >> i'm extremely surprised, like i said, he was a family for sky last time i was with him. he was basically taking care of his wife full-time, and his children. >> the blast on 20 2nd avenue caused a tremendous amount of damage. a private town hall meeting on wednesday is 10 -- is designed to help those impacted by the tragedy. >> my staff went doorknocking on all of those places on 20 2nd avenue. so the town hall is open to everyone on that block who was impacted either physically and psychologically for this explosion. >> there's going to be a private town hall meeting. authorities say the goal is to help people who have been impacted either blast to the help they need to move forward. in the sunset district, suzanne phan, abc7news. >> moving on to developing news, a fixture of california politics

for decades. senator dianne feinstein announced today that she will not run for reelection. >> there's times for all under the sun. i think that will be the right time. >> the 89-year-old was the first female senator elected in california and is the longest-serving woman on the u.s. senate in history since 1992. she first was elected in 1969 to san francisco's board of supervisors and that became the first female mayor of the city. her fingerprints are on some of capitol hill's most consequential works in recent history. congresswoman nancy pelosi said feinstein is someone she admires. quick she was very welcoming and made a tremendous difference from day one. she started with the assault weapon ban and that was revolutionary for our country. in our family, we love her very much personally, pedal -- politically i admire her officially and we are all deeply

in her debt. >> congress members adam schiff and katie porter and barbara lee all have announced their intentions to run for feinstein seat. in the east bay -- >> in the east bay huge sweep has netted dozens of arrest called operation northstar. u.s. marshal matthew silverman led the cracked that focused on gun related crimes. warrants in the oakland bay area there is number one operation northstar. we arrested 19 robbery suspects, five assault suspects, to sex assault suspects. one child was recovered in 24 other arrests for lower level. new initiatives as part of her

campaign promise to make public safety a top priority. as abc7news reporter explains, her plan involves collaboration between oakland police and business leaders. >> we are committed to a safe oakland for every person who lives here, works here, visits and plays here in the city of oakland. >> the oakland mayor led the charge to tackle crime in the city. the acting police chief says one of the biggest changes will be reintroducing for patrols. >> this is a unit that hasn't been in existence for the past two years so this is an exciting time to expand relationships in the business community in the neighborhoods. >> next week the patrols were operate monday through friday during business hours in the city shopping areas. >> this effort will help enhance communication between the police department and businesses. >> chief allison says it comes on the success of last november's holiday crime plan which came out of the spike in crime last summer. according to the oakland police department and the last three months of 2022 homicides are

down 45%. shootings down 20%, robberies reduced by 13% and 160 people arrested. oakland police have been criticized for slow response times. chief allison says the recent hires will help improve that. >> right now we're sitting at 713, just a highest we've been in the last year plus. so we will grant greater capacity, certainly. >> i think now because someone close to our community just passed away so there's a sense of urgency. >> the oakland business owner is referring to the death of oakland baker jan angel. angel died last week following a smash and grab robbery in downtown oakland. kid hopes of the patrol hours will be expanded. she adds it's also important to improve communication with business owners so they aren't just reliant on 911 in emergencies. >> if you think, i will call 911, but are you guys giving us money for security cameras and that nature, so what can we do?

african-americans only have a 29% match rate because there are so few people in the donor registry. >> the biracial rick perry to be a nurse got a transplant in 2019, but her cancer has progressed, now she needs another one. >> if i do not find a match, my disease can progress to the point of leukemia. she is a very serious bone marrow disease. the hardest part is the unknown and the hardest part is, you say, what if this doesn't work, what if this, what if that. >> christian bates of be the match says they are working on getting more ethnically diverse people enrolled on the registry. she says they are looking for people ages 18 to 40 to donate. ask about 90% of the time it stem cells through the arm, so it's a lot like giving platelets. it's not very invasive, the most our former donors say is your arm is a little sore from having
